My wife and I went to 22 Bowen's to celebrate our anniversary. She has never been, and I haven't been in over a decade. The atmosphere was great despite a cloudy, rainy evening. I forgot how nicely appointed the interior is. It has a fabulous bar area that was full. The hostess was great. She gave us a nice table with an excellent view. Our server came over and introduced herself. We ordered a couple of reserve cocktails, including a special Manhattan and a Last Word. The cocktails were fantastic. We began with crab cakes and a wedge salad. We split both so we could try each appetizer. I have to say that these crab cakes were amongst the best I have ever had. The Wedge salad was also very nicely prepared and very flavorful. The dinner rolls were also excellent. Many places forget this entirely these days. We ordered our entrees next. My wife ordered the filet medium rare, and I ordered the 2-pound baked stuffed lobster. We ordered a very nice half-bottle of Cabernet as well. The entrees were served, and my wife cut into the steak. It was way overcooked. The middle was medium well, and the ends were well done. We sent it back. These things happen, and we took it in stride. The problem that developed was time. After 10 minutes, we were told by our server that the new steak would be right out. Well, 5 minutes later, we heard the same thing from Matthew (the manager?). My entrée was getting cold, and I was getting a bit aggravated. I went to the bathroom. When I got back to the table, my wife had her new filet. She said that Matthew apologized profusely and told her that both entrees would be taken off the bill. Her steak was perfectly prepared, and although my entree was a little cold, it was still excellent. I told Matthew that there was no need to remove my entree, but he insisted. As I said, these things happen. When they do, how the restaurant handles it determines how the customer's experience ends. Matthew went out of his way to make up for this mistake. We will return due to his actions. As I said, the cocktails and food were excellent. We want to sit at the bar as we are bar people. Try it out. You won't be sorry. read more

was extremely disappointed with my experience at 22 Bowen's. I had planned a special proposal for my fiancée and made reservations ahead of time. I specifically called and asked if the restaurant could accommodate a special dessert plate with "Will You Marry Me" written on it, and the staff member assured me it would not be a problem. Unfortunately, when the moment came, nothing was done. I went to the front afterward to ask why the request was never fulfilled, and the manager simply told me, "We don't do that." It was upsetting and embarrassing, especially after being promised otherwise. A proposal is a once-in-a-lifetime moment, and the lack of communication completely ruined what I had planned. As for the food, it was mediocre at best. My fish and chips were decent, but the fries were overly salty. My fiancée's Caesar salad was very dry, and we had to ask for additional dressing. The anchovies were also slimy, which completely turned her off from the dish. Overall, the experience was disappointing from both a service and dining perspective. Sadly, I would give this restaurant 1 star. read more

This was my favorite meal of our trip, & we hadn't planned for it. We were having coffee at the end of the pier and decided we needed something more substantial, after a verrrry late breakfast. Despite the fact that we were towards the end of the typical lunch crowd, after 1:20 pm, the place was still hopping. I'd recommend making a reservation in advance and requesting the upstairs seating section: they have the best view. My view was of the bar, the kitchen, and the hall leading to the bathrooms. Without a reservation, we were grateful for any table. Having spent 4 times the bill here on dinner the night before, we were delighted to discover they had a lunchtime menu special for just $22. I ordered their salad (originally out of "obligation" to assuage my nutritional guilt) & an enjoyed a gorgeous burger. Both were wonderful--the salad was really fresh and flavorful and paired so well with the burger's savory decadence. My partner ordered a cup of clam chowder, which she thought was excellent, and the same tasty burger. We both received very generous portions we were unable to finish. Service was friendly and allergy-aware. They had a coat check, which was a nice touch given our many layers in March. Staff were solicitous and plentiful. Spoke with at least one manager...maybe 2? There were 9 of us. The food lacked favors, especially for dry-aged steak I didn't taste anything different from a regular steak. They were very accommodating with my allergies. I enjoyed the vegetarian squash and wild rice entree with delicious celeriac puree and cranberry gastrique. They ran out of the whiskey I ordered but the waiter & the manager came over & offered me a tastings of other whiskeys until I found one I was satisfied with. We stopped by 22 Bowen's for lunch after getting multiple recommendations to eat there. 22 Bowen's is in a great spot on Bowen's Wharf with a great outdoor seating area. We went around 2pm for lunch on a Friday and it was packed and the service was a bit on the slower side. We started with the wagyu dumplings which weren't the best I've ever had, but decent. Food was delectable! Oysters and shrimp 10/10 for freshness and the cocktail sauce was just as fresh and seemed like very clean ingredients. The ceaser salad was the perfect portion for two. Lobster bisque, best I have had with bursting lobster flavor throughout every spoonful. The crème brûlée with fresh blueberries, 10/10 for again freshness, clean authentic taste and the crisp sweet topping was flamed to just the right consistency. The service at the bar was friendly, timely, and attentive to all the details. My husband and I stopped here for lunch on a Sunday afternoon in the winter. There weren't too many restaurants that were open so we were pleased to get a table here. The ambiance is beautiful. We were seated at a table by the window. For food, I ordered the clam chowder, which is very good and creamy. It actually has a little dill in it, which I enjoyed. First impressions could have been better. My boyfriend and I had an 8:450pm reservation on a Saturday night (it was the earliest time I could get on open table). The hostess didn't acknowledge us when we walked in. We did arrive early to sit at the bar until our table was ready. I asked to be seated if something was available sooner. They never called us to seat us at a table, instead at 8:45 we went back to the host stand to be seated (the restaurant had plenty of available tables at this point). The food was good. The oysters could have been shucked better. I was consuming a lot of shell pieces. We ordered the Tomahawk for 2 to share for our entree. It was good, nothing memorable. It was nice that you should choose a sauce/butter to accompany your steak at no additional charge. I did include in my reservation that my boyfriend and I were celebrating our anniversary which nobody acknowledged. We never expect anything but just the acknowledgment would have been nice after all we are celebrating a special occasion and the meal did not come cheap. Overall it was a good experience, not a great one and I probably wouldn't recommend to others considering how many other really great restaurants are in the area. read more

Food is always good and a good size portion. This time I tried the French Onion Burger. Very good & flavorful, though just a tad salty but that maybe due to the caramelized onions. I went here this weekend during a trip to Newport and the food was so good and high quality!! They start off on a high note with delicious rolls, then we had the Waldorf salad which was really good and fresh. For my meal I got the rice crusted tuna which came with a really good sauce and the side of truffle lobster mac and cheese. It is pricey but worth the cost! The server was great and the inside is very nice. This would be a perfect spot for a graduation celebration or something along those lines. read more

Before even sitting at our table, this restaurant won us over as lifetime customers. We were greeted with a handwritten card signed by the entire staff thanking us for celebrating our anniversary (something we only casually noted when making the reservation). It's those small, thoughtful touches that make this place extraordinary. Having grown up working in restaurants, I can say this kind of care is beyond meaningful, it's rare and incredibly special. Our waitress was simply phenomenal (I wish I'd caught her name- she deserves a raise). This was easily the best steak and overall dinner I've ever had, paired with the most perfect ambiance. When we couldn't decide on dessert, she made sure (despite a packed, multi-level, bustling restaurant and bar) that we left with dessert to go on the house. I almost don't want to recommend this place so we can keep our little upstairs table forever without ever worrying about missing out. Truly unforgettable. Truly delicious. My water was never refilled, and the drink I ordered only got one refill after sitting empty for a while. Even more confusing, every table around us was served bread except for ours. I'm not sure if it's complimentary or not since it wasn't on the menu, but it was strange watching every surrounding table get it while we didn't. Our waiter was barely around the entire meal and only came back once after the food arrived to ask how it was. For a restaurant at this level, the lack of attention made the experience feel far less worth the money. Especially knowing i've had better service at places that cost 90% less, the experience felt disappointing for what you're paying. Great food, but the service really missed the mark. read more

This one takes the win for the best steak and seafood restaurant in Newport in my opinion. There are lots of wonderful restaurants here, harder to find a bad one than a good one,l but 22 Bowens takes the cake (I can probably make a stupid pun here about how good their desserts are as well, such as the key lime pie and the carrot cake that we had last night - but I won't make such a pun... oops). The oysters were spectacular, and the cream spinach had the perfect amount of each ingredient, and as you can see from this pic, this is a perfectly cooked dry aged steak. To be honest, the way I found this restaurant was by searching for most expensive restaurants in Newport. Yes it fits that category, but it also fits the category of best restaurants in Newport in my experience. Last night was my second visit and both were beyond excellent. Shout out to the manager, I think his name is Matthew. Lastly, you'll want to make a reservation and you may want to arrive about 20 minutes before your reservation because if you can find street parking during this time of year you can save approximately 30 to $40 on paid parking in the nearby lots. read more

My wife and I had lunch at 22 Bowen's yesterday. The restaurant makes an excellent first impression, as guests enter into a beautiful bar area and smell a whiff of garlic bread. Once seated, we found our server to be personable and knowledgeable. My wife ordered a shrimp po boy and I had a club sandwich. My sandwich ranked among the top-ten best clubs I've ever had.
