I went to the Post Office Cafe for lunch & it was decent. I ordered the fish & chips which honestly was better than a lot of other places in Suffolk. It was a little oily & I wish the Old Bay French Fries had a little more seasoning on it but still was good. My Sam Adams was flat off the tap so I ordered a Bud Light bottle to replace it. The atmosphere is an open high ceiling bar with a post office front, hasn't changed much in many years. The bartender was friendly and the clientele was random people grabbing a weekday lunch. I would return if I was in the area but wouldn't go out of my way to go there as a destination

I had the fish and chips it was good. The fish was flaky and good with a homemade tarter sauce it was delightful. The fries had old bey seasoning it was good but a little bit salty besides that great flavor on point. The Coleslaw you tell was made in house. I'm not a coleslaw fan but this was actually not bad. The ambiance was nice lights dim and beautiful decor to go with a nice spot. The service was good they got us in quickly. Two to three people asked if we needed anything was everything okay. It was nice to have great service.

Came here for a bite to eat after attending a show at the Argyle Theater in Babylon. Not much to say... service was weird, food was mediocre, ambiance was eh, typical. The spring rolls appetizer wasn't too bad, but as basic a cesear salad can be, how was it just ok? Grilled chicken seemed like it was pre-packaged, not fresh. And for $22 that chicken should be made to order. Any how, try at your own discretion, but I doubt I'll be back.

Popped in for quick lunch. Ordered a burger and the steak sandwich. Burger was good, the streak was too chewy for me. The fries were good. Staff was friendly. Nice atmosphere.

I was fortunate enough to photograph an office holiday party at the Post Office Cafe. My trip from Mineola was extremely simple and there was plenty of street parking. No meters during the holiday season was also a wonderful thing for the Village of Babylon. This is a very large venue with many different places to sit. I came into the bar area and navigated to the attached party room. (Obviously, this was a very large post office.) It was a very comfortable walk around this very comfortable venue. This was a party of approximately 55 people and as soon as people started to arrive, the appetizers came out in ample supply. There was never a shortage of food here. The private bar area was busy and the team members behind the counter were moving quickly and well. The team here is wonderful and everyone was very attentive to all of the guests and... extremely pleasant. Everyone sat down for the late lunch and were all served very promptly. I stayed at the bar and had a TERRIFIC burger and fries. Plenty of pictures to take a plenty of room to take them. They even helped me move some tables for a group picture. This is a wonderful environment with great food and an amazing team. I am looking forward to returning with my wife for a meal. KUDOs to the team at Post Office Cafe.

I can't believe how disappointed I was after my visit! I had decided to check this place out because a few people had mentioned it to me and I had driven past a few times. It definitely is beautiful establishment, very pretty on the outside, and a nice space inside as well. There is a full bar as well as lots of table seating. Once we were seated we were asked if we wanted drinks, and we then placed our food order. Once the food came out, our waitress never came back until it was time to ask for the check. We had wanted more diet cokes/prosecco, but we didn't get a chance to order it. Aside from the service, the food was also sub-par. The chicken quesadilla was overtly fried, and the chicken did not taste good at all. It almost tasted like that type of filler chicken. It didn't taste fresh at all either. The wings were okay, but the sweet potato fries were bad. They were super soggy and lacked any flavor. I thought this may have been an off night, so I did try dining here a few nights later with my husband and we had a bad experience as well. The fries and burger were COLD. On both nights, it was not busy in there at all. The food was consistently bad. I'm not sure I'd return.

The Post Office restaurant sounded fun and seemed to have a fair few vegetarian options, so we went there with a bunch of the family. Super cute place, and we were greeted promptly. The menu is interesting, and a number of us were talking about the burgers, and I was super interested in potentially turning the "Truffle shroom" burger into a vegetarian version. Our server said that'd be fine, and when I asked if they could prepare the veggie patty on a separate surface, like a separate pan. She seemed quizzical, and replied that she imagined it shouldn't be a problem, but that she'd have to check with the kitchen. The arancini sounded interesting as well - cacio e pepe - but we wanted to clarify that it was also vegetarian. Our server seemed a little miffed: "it's rice". Our clarification question was whether or not that was prepared with any chicken stock, for example. She said she'd check with the kitchen. When our server returned, she informed us that the kitchen does, indeed, use chicken in their arancini, and added that they can't cook the burger on a separate surface. Really? The kitchen doesn't have a pan? So, "can't" really means "won't". Well, that is just a high level of accommodation. Rather than argue, I relegated myself to just fries, and now limit this this review to a maximum of three stars. That's right; I "can't" give more than three stars to this restaurant. Looking at the titles of the star-levels, Three is "OK", and "could've been better" is far more appropriate. Two it is. The drinks were yummy, and the waffle fries were tasty. So much so that I didn't even think to take a photo of the fries until there was only one left. All in all a fair experience, but the basic refusal of the kitchen to accommodate a legitimate concern of a vegetarian to not have his veggie patty cooked on the same surface as the rest of the meaty burgers is disturbing.

Had lunch here. They have a great looking menu but the food didn't hit sadly. Ordered the spinach and artichoke dip. It was more soupy than thick. There was no sign of artichoke. The slice of cheese on top looked good but solidified really quick and we had to tear at it to try to eat it. I got the chicken wrap. It didn't have any flavor and seemed to just be the breading of the chicken without any chicken at all. There was no flavor to it at all; not even the ranch. I mainly tasted the burnt part of the wraps. My friend got a salad and said the chicken tasted like prepackaged chicken rather than freshly grilled. The drinks we got were great! I'd come back for that but not the food.

Meri L.

I came here with a friend for a late lunch/early dinner. We decided on sharing two appetizers; spinach artichoke dip and boneless wings; chipotle bbq flavor. Both were very good! The spinach dip came with pita bread and chips for dipping. It was ooey gooey cheesey good! The boneless wings were good too and had a nice flavor. Both were a great size for both of us to share and munch on. Service was good. We said we would come back and try more of the menu!

A few friends and I came here the other day. I wasn't really impressed. I'm not sure if this was some type of dive restaurant. The staff was friendly and there is a lot of seating. But the feel of it just wasn't for me. We ordered some margaritas that weren't that great in my opinion. The pretzels they had were good. Just the dips were mediocre. They have these carousel animals hanging from the ceiling. Which I don't know where the name "post office" would come into play with that. There is also a parking lot in the back and street parking. I would like to try this place again when it's later in the evening and when Covid is over. read more

It's located on a very busy intersection and across the street from the fire house which my baby though was super cool! Most of the food we tried was ok, but nothing special. Their wings were not our favorite. We tried every sauce, and liked the honey bbq the most. The only difference between the hot and mild sauce was the amount of oil in it?. read more

This is a nice, big and spacious place, plenty of seating where you're not on top of eachother. When we went they were very busy but we were seated in less than 20 minutes. Our waiter was very nice and friendly. He was quick with everything. Now the food on the other hand.. was alright. Nothing crazy. I had a drink called the Lily Rose and it was very good. We shared the cacio pepe arancini and they were pretty good, the soicy vodka sauce they were in was good. My boyfriend got the roast beef sandwich and it was not good. I've had many roast beef sandwiches and this is the worst I've tried. It wasn't just bland..it tasted off. The fries were good though. I got a rice bowl with rare steak and they cooked the steak perfectly so that I enjoyed but overall the food is just meh. read more

We were out with our good friends to go to see the play, Grease, at the Argyle Theatre in Babylon, NY. The play was a matinee, so after the play we decided to have an early dinner. We asked the theatre staff where we could eat, they recommended the Post Office Cafe on Main St. in Babylon. It was a short walk to the cafe. We walked into a beautiful English pub styled restaurant with a large bar and two dining areas. A great first impression! We were seated at a booth with a large table and comfortable seating. Our waiter, Elvis, was engaging and funny. He saw our playbills and asked if we had come from the Argyle Theatre. He said he was a triple threat! "I can't sing , dance or act!" We all laughed. We felt right at home with Elvis. We ordered some drinks and looked over the menu, which had a variety of appetizers, soups, entrees (pasta, seafood, steaks, hamburgers). It was early, so we ordered four Classic hamburger with lettuce, tomato, red onion and waffle fries. We ordered the hamburgers cooked to our preferences. They were all perfect and everyone said we like this place. As I said earlier it was early so we decided on desserts: ice cream on a huge warm brownie and sticky toffee pudding. To say these desserts were good is a major understatement. They were awesome. We all share the desserts and were very satisfied with our dining experience. In fact, we are planning to go back to the Argyle Theatre and dine at the Post Office Cafe in the near future. The Cafe was established in 1978 and their promise is "Nor' rain, sleet or dark of night...the Post Office always delivers." I can tell you the Post Office delivered for us. I highly recommend this cafe if you're in Babylon. It is worth the trip! Stay safe and keep healthy. Enjoy each day. read more

The nachos just weren't very good. We ordered it with chicken and there wasn't much chicken on it and there wasn't much cheese either. Very skimpy on everything they put on it. Service is mediocre. You often have to flag them down or wait until you see your waiter to get something. It's typically loud there. The back room can be quieter. read more

I was referred to this place by my son and daughter-in-law as I needed a venue to host my husband's surprise birthday party. The event planner, Melissa, was amazing. Her recommendations for the menu were perfect and delicious. The champagne punch was light and refreshing, the coffee was also very good. All the family truly enjoyed the food and the attention of the servers, who went above and beyond all expectations. The atmosphere was upbeat, happy and inviting. There was plenty of parking on the late Saturday morning, which was a pleasant surprise for a bustling town. read more

So my wife and I ordered from the Post Office Cafe through Uber Eats....and halfway through my stree corn salad I find this huge moth furled up in a piece of lettuce. I called to let them know, and the manager would not come to the phone but told receptionist said I needed to get refund through uber eats or come pick up a replacement! No concern as to why there Salas was contaminated? When I advised that was a poor response, the manager placated me with the promise if a gift card, which was never even sent. Honestly I don't want to eat there again anway. Totally disgusting and unacceptable response. read more

We went to the Post Office Cafe for dinner on Tuesday night. It was my first time there, but it wasn't for my fiancé and her parents. It's a deceivingly large place, the main area with the bar has ample seating and a nice fireplace. There is also two larger rooms off to the side if it's busy, or for private parties. And there is a double sided fireplace between those. We started off with buffalo wings & tai chili calamari. The wings were good, not the best I've had, but still good. The tai chili calamari was delicious, perfectly breaded and the sauce was spot on. For dinner I had the Monterey Chicken club (delicious), my fiancé has the shrimp tacos, her father had the miso salmon and her mom has the crispy chicken ranch wrap. The service was was great, the apps came out fast. The one thing that could have been better was I thought dinner was brought out too fast. We still had some of the appetizers left on the table. read more

I ate at the Post Office Cafe last week and it was so fantastic, I had to come back tonight. Last week I tried the Killer Mac and Cheese. I never get mac and cheese out bc it was my mom's signature dish and noplace makes it as good as hers. Well, finally some place did! The difference is that each cheese variety is identifiable still, as opposed to being melted into a rue. You get the tastes and texture of all 4 cheeses. Fantastic. And IMO their roasted brussels are incomparable. I had a wonderful server named Nicole both times. When I came tonight with my family, she remembered me and my order. My friend last week got the Buddha Bowl and loved it. Tonight my family and I got the short rib, boneless wings, soup of the day and Thai Calamari. Everything was delicious. Service, ambiance & dining set-up for a recent baby shower were spot on; very conducive to chatting & mingling.. The charm of the old post office, open feeling, & the fairly easy flow from back to front all added to a good time & a good experience. Service was great, staff was super friendly & the food items were hit or miss. Turkey sliders (w/& w/out bacon) were very good, the mini-soufflees were a bit too salty for my taste, the French toast & pancakes were hard (probably dried out from sitting in hot trays...?), the Danishes were also very good. We loved the architecture & design indoors & , in parking space-starved Babylon, there was adequate side street parking. read more

From the Business

Specialties

The Post Office Café has been a Long Island favorite for over 40 years. Known for our juicy burgers, signature cocktails, and welcoming staff, the Post Office is sure to deliver every time. “For over 40 years Babylonians have been gathering daily at the Post Office Cafe. As we always say at the PO, people don’t come to us because they’re hungry. They come for company and companionship. They tell us they feel like they belong here, and that’s the greatest compliment we could ever be paid. They are part of the PO family.” Jack and Larry Lessing, Founders, Lessing's Hospitality Group

History

Established in 1978.

Lessing’s Hospitality Group opened the Post Office Café on Main Street in Babylon in 1978. It is rare for any restaurant to celebrate over 40 years in business, but the Post Office Café is still going strong. Jack Lessing bought the old Post Office, built in the 1930s, from a friend who was running a bartending school in the building and converted it into a family pub that entertains many of the original customers to this day.

We ordered the Captain Corn & The Swine French Toast and Noemi's Pupusas Clásicas. Both were excellent, but the French toast was a standout. Not overly sweet, the cinnamon paired incredibly well with the pork and the cornbread, and the kernels of corn baked in were a nice touch. Love to see a creative menu like this. So many interesting options, it was hard to choose. The space is beautiful with great natural light from the high ceilings. If you find it a little loud, they have some high tops near the bar that are quieter and more private. We'll be back.

Food took about 30 minutes to come out, and we were literally the only ones in the place. My wife had digestion issues after eating. Also, the coffee cups are very small. We needed about 3 refills instead of 1 which we would normally get. Service 4/5. Our server was attentive, friendly, walked us through the menu without being pushy. He checked on us. Ambiance 2/5. Cozy spot, good music playing. But the chairs are metal with zero cushion, and there's a bar across the back of the chair that digs right into your back if you lean back at all, so you end up sitting forward the whole meal. First floor flooring looked dated too. Cleanliness 3/5. Floor on the first level wasn't that clean. Given the digestion issues afterward, makes you wonder what's going on back in the kitchen. Bathroom was fine though, passed a quick swipe test. Parking 3/5. There's lots nearby but it's a bit of a walk, and you cross a street that gets busy. Street parking exists if you can find a meter. Value 2/5. $50 with tip for two people. For the wait, the stomach issues, and those chairs, that felt like too much. Overall 2/5. Service was solid but it couldn't make up for the food problems and how uncomfortable the seating was. Not going back.

Loud music and loud talking because people couldn't hear each other over the music. I started with a mango jicama salad from the specials menu, it was delicious, I definitely recommend it and I hope they still have it if I ever get back that way. I also ordered another appetizer for my dinner, mediterranean flatbread. It was mid. The toppings were good but the bread didn't seem fresh. Not a deterrent for a future visit though. The menu is eclectic: everything from Fried Goat Cheese to Spicy Stuffed Rigatoni to Parm Truffle Fries. I ordered the Au Poivre Skewers and Taste of Long Island Oysters as appetizers. For a cocktail, I had an Old Fashioned made with Woodford Reserve. For dessert, I had the Chocolate Dubai Martini. The Au Poivre Sauce was on par with any steakhouse in NYC, the oysters tasted fresh caught, the Old Fashioned was magnificent with Bourbon Cherries, and the Dubai Martini (a dessert, not a cocktail) was rich and chocolatey. The food and drink are a little pricey for what you get, but that is the story with most restaurants these days. The crowd was a little noisy. It was hard to hear what the bartender was saying to sometimes, but that is just me, Gail B., usually having difficulty tuning out the restaurant/bar crowd.

It was that good. The wedding ceremony took place outside, where rows of chairs were set up and we all had gorgeous waterfront views. After the ceremony, we walked into the building's first floor for the cocktail hour. Simply put, the food was amazing. The cocktail hour alone could have served as a meal. There was a big central charcuterie station of cold appetizers - think meats, cheeses, fruits, and crudities. The four corners of the room each housed a food station - a carving station, sushi/sashimi, pasta, and Asian stir fry. Oh, and there were tons of butler service passed hors oeuvres too. Next, we walked upstairs to the large ballroom for the main meal. Dinner service started with a "Burrata Caprese" salad with a big hunk of creamy mozzarella served in a dressed salad with grilled bread. As for the dinner entrees, would you believe a choice of SEVEN entrees?? I kid you not -- seven entrees - Branzino, chicken, pork, beef, shrimp, Surf and Turf, and eggplant. My table had just about all of the choices, and everything disappeared. After the meal, there was an apple tart with ice cream and wedding cake. All of the people I interacted with, the hosts, the bartenders, the servers and the clearers were super polite and friendly. Danielle did an incredible job for our daughters Baby Shower on Saturday, January 19 at the Post Office Cafe in Babylon. From the moment we walked in, she took charge of everything! She calmed my nerves and my worries by immediately putting everything into action! She truly listened to me with what I asked for & arranged things exactly how I requested! Danielle never stop smiling and her personality was contagious with her staff members, Rebecca & Andrew. Actually all night long our guests commented how kind she was and how immediate her service was to them! She actually completely things before I could even ask! Oh did I mention how amazing the food was?!! And cocktails too!! Yum! There were guests with a gluten allergy & a special delicious option menu was given to them. I am very pleased with the party that we hosted at the Post Office Cafe for my son's Baptism. We had approximately 65 guests and had the entire far side room and private bar area which was the perfect amount of space. The servers, Sarah, Alysha & especially Jill, were all very kind and attentive to my guests and their requests. We did not go overboard with decorations but the servers set up for us, and had an extra basket for us to display favors. The maitre d, Danielle maintained excellent communication throughout the entire process of booking this party. She had great suggestions for food selection, setting up seating, decorating and overall was very helpful. Many people relayed compliments to me about the ambiance, service and the delicious food. I am very happy with our experience, and would recommend the Post Office Cafe for hosting an event. read more

Had dinner here last night with the family. We ended up here after two other tries to get tables else where to no avail. We walked in and the placed seemed pretty lively, good music and vibe with people everywhere. Even though we had to wait about 20 minutes for a table the wait was well worth it. Our server got to us right away and was attentive the entire time. We got burgers and wings and couldn't say how good everything was. They even sang my son happy birthday with our dessert. The drinks were good and they had a nice verity on draft, our server recommended the Local IPA which I would wind up having 3. Overall we had a fantastic experience, we would 100% recommend and we will be back again. read more

They did it again. We've moved from the area so we haven't been able to come as much as we like to but early this week we had dinner and everything was really really good. The steak sandwich is probably one of the best on the island, the crispy onions and sauce that was on it is addicting, I want the recipe so that my wife and I can try to replicate it at home. The Post Office Cafe is my 'go-to' place for a night out in Babylon. I moved to Babylon two years ago, and this is the place that I find myself returning to most often. The burgers are pretty good and affordable, and there are a lot of appetizers to pick from, which is good for someone like me that usually sticks to a burger and a beer. There can be a bit of a wait if you show up during peak hours (usually a good sign) and parking in the village is a bit tricky, but it's definitely worth your time and money for an evening out. read more

That being said, parking around here is generally not great and make sure you look out for a few scattered no parking signs! Wait staff was friendly and very helpful, although a little bit slow to get us our food it seemed. Getting to the food though, we had the soft pretzel, beef nachos, and mozzarella sticks to start. Nothing that would blow your socks off, but good quality bar snacks for sure. As for dinner I had their signature which is LARGE and IN CHARGE while my girlfriend had the all dya egg sandwich, each with a side of fries. I think everything could have used a bit more salt, and that is coming from someone with a salt sensitive pallete, but also shockingly, I think the oddball of the egg sandwich was actually the star of the show, but maybe that is just the Long Islander in me talking. Although I just stuck to tried and true coors light, the cocktails looked good and didn't skimp on the pours, which is always a plus. The real attraction of this place though is the nautical charm right along the canal. Hell, if you have a boat, you can even dock right on the premise and likely have a better shot of finding a spot there than on the street for your car. The vibe was chill with some live music playing too, but not too loud where you wouldn't be able to just chat with friends comfortably. Definitely a place I'd look to come back to for hanging out, especially if you've got a nice day on your hands.

Not my favorite place, but strong drinks. Nice view and music. Hard to park as others stated. If it…read morewas less crowded I think we would have enjoyed more.

The food was excellent, and the drinks were even better. Everything was prepared perfectly, and the entire experience felt special from start to finish. If you're looking for the perfect spot for a birthday party, celebration, or get-together, look no further. We celebrated my daughter's 16th birthday here, and they helped make an already special occasion even more memorable. A huge thank you to our waitress, Isabella, who was truly the heart of the evening. She anticipated every need, kept everything running smoothly, and made sure we never had to worry about a thing. Her attention to detail and warm personality made all the difference. I also have to give a special shoutout to Ariana, the hostess. She was absolutely fantastic--friendly, welcoming, and set the tone for a wonderful night from the moment we walked in. Thank you to the entire team for helping create such a memorable evening for my daughter and our family. We can't wait to come back!

The staff were fantastic and the food was delicious. The drink menu is on point! I had a "pain killer" and it was a great balance of sweet with just the right amount of alcohol.

We ordered the seafood tower to start. What a mistake. Several clams and oysters were destroyed while trying to open them, they were opened several hours prior to serving them and shriveled to nothing. A cold lobster that also was dried and tasteless. The several shrimp were fresh and good. The worst seafood tower ever. $65 of wasteful spending I went again to this restaurant by boat on Labor Day 2026. A musician was playing, the weather was great, the scenery was perfect, sadly the food was tasteless. I started out with baked clams, 6 clam shells with bread crumbs. I did not chew on any pieces of chopped clams. $24.00 for 6 clams that the breadcrumbs barely covered the shells was atrocious.
