Yep it is not at the Great Wall in China, so you don't have to pay for flight and parking to get some good food lol. Hot pot is something all people from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, I guess most Asians like it. Normally we eat this in Winter, but don't let it slide way because of weather. I have tried pretty much all the pots at this place, I was here since they opened, all of them are pretty good. If you can't handle the smelly pot, you are missing out on some good stinky tofu :) It is weird to have Taiwanese popcorn chicken at a hot pot spot, but who gives a S right! It tastes so freaking good, you better get it. The flavor, the tenderness of chicken, it is oral sex without the sex lol. You probably wonder why I gave a 4 stars, after I talk so great about their food. Service at this place is hit and miss, sometimes is good, sometimes is horrible. If I'm the owner, I would pay close attention on the people they hired. Some clearly don't need money, so why come to work. In addition, the bathroom isn't always the cleanest. The other day I was there, the soap dispenser was missing. Not trying to be picky, but it is important to have those all the time when you are running a restaurant business. It was Saturday night, and my friends and I were looking for a restaurant that had similar communal and fun vibes as KBBQ, but could also accommodate for pescatarians. Pop Pot is located in a shopping center, so parking was no problem. We had a group of 9 people and were seated immediately upon arrival. Walking in, I definitely felt authentic vibes, given that our server greeted us in Mandarin. While my Mandarin isn't the best, I was still able to hold conversations with our server and she was so kind and attentive, always willing to explain the menu and offer to refill our water/sauces. Don't let the Mandarin deter you in any way, because our server was also fluent in English. My friends communicated in English and there was absolutely no problem! Out of the 18 pot options, I chose the medium-spice Sukiyaki Pot, which came with Sliced Beef, Udon, Egg, Onion, Napa, Clams, Fish Tofu, Scallions, and Cilantro. ON TOP OF THAT, every soup gets a Quail Egg, Enoki Mushroom, Meat Ball, Fish Ball, Kamaboko, Imitation Crab, Pig's Blood Cake, Tempura, Stuffed Fish Ball, and your choice of White Rice or Glass Noodles. Spice wise, you get to choose between 5 spice levels, ranging from None (0%) to Dare (150%). After placing the orders, our server came by with two sauces: a spicy sauce and a sweet sauce. The food came out about 10 minutes after ordering, plated in a huge pot with a bowl of coal (?) underneath and our side of Glass Noodles or Rice. They light up the coal underneath and it starts to cook. You have to wait a few minutes for the soup to start boiling to cook the meat, but I was just so fascinated by the coal setup that my food was ready in no time. The actual dish was amazing: the medium spice level was perfect and all the ingredients tasted really fresh. The only issue I can think of is that you have to eat the soup very slowly because it is literally boiling in front of you. However, the coal burns out after about 20 minutes and the soup cools down. Portion-wise, it was super filling. I managed to eat the whole pot and it felt like I just ate at an AYCE buffet - but for a fraction of the price. Pop Pot is such a unique experience and so delicious. While it's not the traditional hot pot in the sense where you have a large communal pot in the middle, it was definitely a great meal and allowed more accommodation for specific diets. Going to Pop Pot was both an amazing experience and a sad memory. Amazing because it's delicious and sweat inducing but sad because I can't believe this was my first time having hot pot ever. I keep thinking of all the missed hot pot opportunities... Anyways, on to the food - I was glad that my first hot pot was at an individual order place since most traditional hot pot places are shared but I was happy I could order whatever I wanted. They offer a wide variety of flavors from Japanese miso to popcorn chicken but I ended up going for the Taiwanese Spicy option because it also came with ramen noodles (and picked the glass noodles as my "side" because double noodle = double fun). The bowl comes PACKED with ingredients, everything from veggies like cabbage and mushrooms to fish cakes, blood sausage, and of course, thin slices of beef. The broth was delicious and at 70% spicy it definitely packed a punch without making me scream for mercy but I recommend going lower if you're not very comfortable with spicy food. I also loved that the burners keep your pot boiling hot as you eat so you can really sweat out all of the day's stress. They've got about 12 or more styles of hot pot including Taiwanese Spicy Pot, Korean Army Pot, Curry Pot, etc. They also have a pretty wide variety of hot pot add-ons including tempura, corn, beef, tofu, egg, etc. You also get to pick your spicy level to which I went with the 70% spicy Satay Beef Pot. This pot consists of Napa Cabbage, Corn, tofu, blood cake, fish balls, cilantro and of course rare beef. I added tempura to my pot and extra cilantro. I was blown away at how the taste was exactly like my old favorite spot - Boiling Point. Perfect spicy soup base and a great combination of veggies and beef. I recommend trying their sauces that they bring to each table as well. These are great to dip your meat in or as I like, pour over my rice. The service was very friendly and attentive. The menu itself isn't very big, but you get to choose a lot. I got the beef hotpot and I wasn't very impressed. It was pretty tasteful but probably not my cup of tea! I do have to ding them on the sauces, which weren't many. Given there are many other hot pot places around the area with way better sauce selection, this is definitely something they should improve on. It is a bit spicy but they give you the option to order broth that is non spicy for guests that are more sensitive to heat. I lived in Taiwan for six months and at some point had hotpot nearly 3 times a week. I didn't think I'd be able to find anything remotely close in Georgia, and I still haven't (ha.) BUT, Pop Pot is a solid four stars for me. Pop Pot is in the center of a spacious plaza. There's actually another hotpot option just a few stores down. There's also a wall of Taiwanese drinks behind the counter as decor. The menu is relatively small. It's a single laminated sheet with a few appetizer options and a selection of individual sized pots. (This is simply known as 'little hotpot' in Taiwan.) There are a variety of flavors, though for some reason some of them are served in smaller portions for $12+ and larger $16+, but you don't have the option of choosing either or. We had: - Curry fishball hotpot ($12) - I decided to be adventurous that night and I ended up loving this pot. You have the option of choosing a spice level and rice or vermicelli. I love spicy foods and got the 100% spicy and it was perfect for me. It comes with an assortment of veggies, fishballs, and calamari. I really enjoyed the soup. It reminded me of my father's cooking and made me miss home so much more. - Taiwanese spicy pot ($16) - Even at 100% spice, this pot doesn't quite match up to an authentic Taiwanese hotpot. For the extra pricing, you get a slightly larger pot, an egg, and ramen noodles. My partner and I agreed that my pot was the winner. As with other reviewers, the lack of sauce options is extremely disappointing. If you're a hotpot fan, you're definitely used to that little make-your-own sauce booth with options of minced garlic, soy sauce, chinese bbq sauce, hot sauce, cilantro, etc. Here, you get to choose between three squeeze bottles. Soy sauce, hot sauce, or...another hot sauce. It was a rather funny experience when we asked for chinese bbq sauce and the waitress and owner(?) were both shocked as if it was the strangest request ever. The owner(?) explained that chinese bbq sauce was only used as soup base, and not as a sauce. Clearly I've been living my life wrong for the past 20 years. Regardless, they were nice about it and fulfilled our request and even offered more later on. Overall, try the Curry fishball hotpot! Non-existent selection of sauces, but still a good meal. I ordered the curry fish ball hot pot ($12). The pots come with a choice of rice or glass noodles. I chose the rice because I was hungry. The curry broth was so flavorful and goes perfectly with the rice. I was pleasantly surprised that there was plenty of food. The pot has much more food than I anticipated. Anytime we needed anything we would have to flag the waitress down. The waitress didn't check on our table. For the price, this is a great spot for hot pot. Spices were all there and better yet, there were so many fish ball, fish cake, tofu, that they put in there! However I do with that there were more meat. I had to separate my meat from the pot or else it would get all nasty and hard to chew. The waitress was super sweet but what caught me off guard was when my friend asked for extra cheese, she decided to tell her that it "was extra money". Now it does say that on the menu so it wasn't a shock to hear that. But the waitress should've known that but yet she told her like we were broke or something? The dumplings itself was not good at all. It's only good if you dip it into the sauce that they provide. When my fiancé and I walked in we were immediately greeted. Since this place was not advertised at all we asked to look at the menu before sitting down. After looking at the menu, we decided to stay. This place offers a plethora of different types of hot pot. We were seated promptly and took a few minutes to decide what to get. The waiter informed us that they specialize in Stinky Tofu. Since my girl Lesa told me that it's something we should try out I just had to get some. We ended up waiting about 10-15 minutes before they took our order. If they took any longer we probably would have left, especially considering that there were only about 2 or 3 other tables in the restaurant. We soon found out that we were dangerously close to the closing time of 10 pm. However, we did not know that it closed at 10 because the hours were not posted and no one told us the hours when we came in. So this may be a reason why it took so long. While we waited I took note of the comfy yet modern mix of decor that the place had. There was definitely this inviting and clean ora. When the waiter came to take our orders I asked him what type of Stinky Tofu he would recommend. He said that in his opinion the fried was better than the spicy because the fried has a better texture. I'm a texture person when it comes to my food so we ordered the fried Stinky Tofu. I got the Korean Kimchi Pot with medium level spiciness and my fiancé got the Satay Beef Pot with mild level spiciness. We waited about another 15-20 minutes for our food. I tried the Stinky Tofu first. Honey that smell! Lord Jesus take the wheel that smell was overpowering. My fiancé described it as smelling like cow manure. The texture and flavor with the dipping sauce wasn't inedible but it's not something that I would try again. No thank you. My fiancé spit it out as soon as he tasted it. I think the fermented taste along with the overpowering rotten smell was just a little too much for us. It was fun trying something new and laughing about our reactions to it but it's not something that I would necessarily recommend unless you've ever had it before. Now to the hot pot. This place is a bit different when it comes to how they serve it. Your pots come out and they light a fire under each pot so it keeps boiling throughout the night. It's great to keep it warm, but girl I burned my mouth like 5 times because I kept thinking it was cooling down. The hot pot is a little different here from other places as well because they put all of the meat and vegetables in the bowl at once instead of letting you put them in yourself. It definitely makes the veggies and some of the seafood mushy. Each pot is served with a side of rice or noodles as well as bean paste and soy sauce for dipping. Personally, I enjoyed my pot. I will admit that there were a lot of flavors going on all at once but it was fun having a different flavor with every bite. It was definitely not my favorite hot pot but a fun experience and I always enjoy trying something new. My fiancé was not impressed but he never really likes anything anyways so that's not a good indication lol. He did say that he wished that they offered an option with more meat and not seafood. I agree because some people are allergic to seafood so they should have the option without it especially since they add everything to the pots before putting them on the table. Overall, it was a fun experience. The flavors were good just not the best that I have ever had. The element of surprise with every bite is definitely appealing. I do not recommend the Stinky Tofu, especially if you are going to be kissing someone afterwards. Honey that smell lingers. The service was okay. They explained that this was just a soft opening and that they do not have any plans for the grand opening as of now. So this explains more about why the place seemed more empty than normal and the service was slow. However, our servers were polite and even apologetic about the slow service. Maybe when I'm feeling a little adventurous I might return, but this might just be a one time thing for me and my fiancé. Try it out and see if you like it! read more
