I rarely post on Yelp anymore but felt the need to share that the practices at this restaurant are shady. For takeout, I ordered a full Hainan chicken set and only received the chicken without any rice or soup. The waitress told me that I needed to order from them directly, but when I tried to order from their website, it was missing a ton of items including veggies and beverages so I had to order from another platform. The only time I really order Hainan chicken is when I crave the rice so this was a let down. The HK style milk tea was also not good because the tea tasted over-steeped and had a strong tannin flavor. Lastly, the string beans looked day old and was mixed with a fresher batch. $60 (doesn't include tip) for Hainan chicken with no rice or soup, questionable string beans, and two subpar milk teas. Delicious whole hainanese chicken with rice for $25! Great value and beautiful presentation. They also have daily $10 specials for Hong Kong rice or pasta dishes. Overall great value for takeout. Pop is known for its Hainanese Chicken and it's not surprising at all - tender, juicy, boneless cuts, along with chicken rice and a scrumptious ginger soup. Get this - wouldn't make sense if you came here and didn't. Curry fish balls - good, a little unaccustomed to having it in curry, but it was good. Ox Tail soup - yummy hearty broth - red meat was tender and came off the bone easily. Fish with homemade chili - this one had a kick on the Szechuan side, so be careful. This was over a week ago so I think I got everything down. The kind man serving us was great - very helpful with deciphering the menu and telling us about specials and how much we needed to order. I haven't been here since they first open and I had mostly steam food items which was very good. So I came here for a friend's bday anniversary and the food is very yummy. It is pricy but worth the experience. They also have karaoke, now that's interesting. The spotted prawns were more like tiny shrimps which was still good but a bit of work. The sticky rice with the king crab was very good. The staff was really nice and fast. Everything was really good but I thought the king crab was a bit over priced. Overall we all enjoyed it. Even if it's a bit pricy, I'll still recommend the place. read more

We decided to stop in for lunch. Mom had been here before, said that the food was pretty good although it could get expensive quickly. We were greeting immediately and seated at a booth. The entire time we were there, we were the only table to dine in. They had numerous people picking up take-out orders. Menus were printed on a 8.5x11" sheet of paper. The font was a challenge to read and the text was crammed together but we managed to muddle through it. As usual, we over ordered in order to be able to get a variety of dishes. Hainan Chicken - 5 - excellent flavor. served cold. great dipping sauce of oil, garlic and green onions. we were also brought a mild but flavorful chili sauce. Oxtail in Red Wine Sauce - 4 - I'll never understand why oxtails sell for $6.99 a pound at Costco and more elsewhere. Every cow has a tail so they should be easily available. The dish was flavorful but the oxtail was lean and a bit chewy. Also, it had potatoes and carrots instead of carrots and daikon radish which is a better flavor combination. Chinese Vinegar with Ginger, Pig Feet and Eggs - 4 - This is a dish that was traditionally served to women a few days after they gave birth. It certainly has a unique flavor in that the vinegar is not sour but on the sweet side. Vegetable fo the Day - N/A - It really wasn't the veg of the day. I simply asked for a dish of whatever greens were the freshest. I never got around to trying it because I was too busy working meat off the bones. Service was very good. Friendly and as engaging as I wanted without being obtrusive. When we were done, our leftovers were taken into the kitchen to be packaged for us. The dishes that we ordered did not require the use of the in-table cooktops. We may have to come back to try other dishes. It will be so much easier when COVID is over. read more

I came here last night for a company holiday party. The place isn't very big, so we were able to reserve the entire restaurant for a private party for about 60 people. Parking was easy on a Saturday evening. The Manila Oriental Market closes and there's tons of parking. The service is amazing! Round after round, the waiters/waitresses came by and set new dishes to steam and serve us food. There is a dome that opens on a timer and literally seconds after it opens, someone is there to attend to the food. My glass of wine was also topped off regularly and I saw non alcoholic drink orders were served quickly. Plates of shells and bones were changed regularly. Everyone was friendly and service couldn't have been better. Fresh seafood is the best. It has a freshness that you just don't get when eating seafood at a restaurant that doesn't specialize in seafood. Simplicity at its best. No seasoning needed. Just steam it so you can appreciate the flavor of the seafood, with a bit of seasoned soy sauce to dip. We had a really good menu of clams, abalone, scallops, Maine lobster, fish, chicken, quail, live shrimp, xiao long bao, and some veggies. At the very end of the meal, you get to eat the congee that's been cooking in the drippings of all the fresh seafood from the entire meal. It's delicious. Location: Inside a plaza with a parking lot Service: Can be slow. I witnessed a couple walk out because they were tired of waiting. Typical Asian restaurant service without explanations or smiles. But, food is prepared and served by the waiter, course by course. They will do the steaming and serving while you watch and eat. Interior: Still looks new even though Pop Kitchen has been around for over a year. Each table has a steam machine, and it's cool to watch them go up and down. Food: For two, we tried fresh shrimp, scallops, XLB (soup dumplings), steamed clams, and a plate of veggies. We dipped each piece into a premade sauce. I hate to slam a small, family-owned restaurant, but this place was a little disappointing. The only reason to come here is for the hot steamer machines which lower down from the ceiling and steam the food at your table, providing a little show for you, but there are only seven tables at this restaurant and only two have steamers that work. If you don't get a table with a working steamer, you have to order food from the kitchen, and the food is okay, not great. They don't tell you which steamer is working or not as they're seating you, and that means if your steamer isn't working, you don't find out until after you've ordered. We came here for dim sum, and there are places that serve better dim sum (HL Peninsula and Ming Yuan Restaurant) and we also ordered the Hainan chicken, which was not only small, but we could make a better Hainan chicken than what we had here. read more

Another newish, interesting concept in dining that's made it way from Asia. Rather than you cooking it, like a hot pot, your meal is steamed in front of you under a steaming dome at your table. The raw foods, unseasoned, are placed under dome steamer. Once you've ordered the food, it's placed on the steaming table under the dome, then the dome comes down. When the food is cooked, the dome automatically rises and the waitstaff pours and/or provides the sauce and then serves it to you, dividing it among your party. You can opt to order the congee (for additional cost) and all the steamed drippings fall into the congee pot that is below the steaming tray and you can have congee with your meal. We came for dinner and we were only a party of 3, so we didn't order a lot of food and since it was dinner, we skipped the dim sum selections. We ordered the oysters, "premium" sliced beef, steam pork in lotus leaf and XLB dumplings. The oysters were delicious, the XLB dumplings were also good. The beef, albeit "premium" was a bit of a let down and the minced beef on lotus leaf was a disappointment. We were expecting something wrapped in a lotus leaf, but instead the bamboo steamer was lined with the lotus leaf, rice and beef on top of the leaf and steamed (this was served already steamed; you didn't have to cook it yourself under the dome) The food itself was average, you steam your meats and dip in the provided sauces. This may be fun the first time, but I can't see myself coming here on any regular basis, particularly for the cost. The oysters were $2.80 apiece, the lotus leaf minced beef was $20; the large order or XLB was $13 and the premium beef was $19. It was over $50 for 3 of us. I think the menu is pricey...starting at $6 for dim sum and between $15-$20 for non-dim sum dishes. Ive been on a hunt for the best baked cheese rice around the city and I think this place is definitely in the lead so far. Giant Clam with Vermicelli (live) $8/one: i expected a little more flavor from this. It was bland and had to add in the sauces they provided on the table. Geoduck (live) seasonal: If i remember correctly it was about $50-$60 per pound. Not worth it. The whole table agreed it wasn't good and was way to expensive. Fresh Shrimp (live) seasonal: pretty bomb, it went well with the sauces. Premium Beef $19: surprisingly really good despite being steamed. I thought the quality would be brought down since not grilled but it was very juicy. Spareribs $13: honestly cant go wrong with this. Tasted like dim sum. Pop Kitchen has been on my to-go list ever since my friend told me about their soft opening. The second most memorable thing about pop kitchen are the chairs. They look like that Simon game turned into a chair. The most memorable thing was the way the steamers came down and then would pull up, steam fueling out of it as it wished up and everyone scrambled to try and get the perfect boomerang shot. Their food? Not bad, but not overly memorable either, except in how it was cooked and the fact that it came with like, 10 XLBs in one order. Pretty tasty but I've had better. I suspect their seafood would be a different story, but one of my friends was allergic to shellfish, so alas, this trip was limited to a still solid number of dishes. It was probably cheaper that way. Our lunch was about $25 after tax and tip with 5 or 6 dishes and 3 of us. We also got the beef rice noodle roll which was solid, the pork belly, which was pretty tasty, would order again, and a few other things I'm struggling to remember. They did bring out some of the dishes already steamed/cooked, which was good otherwise we would have starved since the steamer was fairly small and could do like, max two dishes. Oh! It was the pork and chive dumplings. They were dumplings, so they were tasty. Actually, there was one dish that did stand out, and I highly recommend getting. The custard lava buns were pretty tasty and pretty memorable since we all, despite knowing it was ridiculous hot and literally we watched it finish cooking, ate it immediately and scalded our mouths. Also the sauces they provided were pretty delish. Was the steamer gimmicky? Kind of. Was it fun? Yes. I think it's definitely an interesting place to take people but I could see the novelty wearing off, and after that, it just becomes another dim sum restaurant but with more seafood. Would I go again? Sure would, but mostly for the novelty of the steamer. I'd probably rate it 4.5 if I could. And I'd definitely make sure not to go when starving, cause the dishes take like 6-10 min to steam before you can stuff them in your face assuming you don't wait longer for it to cool. The pork smelled and tasted bad and the oil it was cooked in was old. Service was very slow as well. First time visiting today but it will not be the last! My husband saw a posting on Facebook for their $25.00 Whole Hainan Chicken Special so we had to give it a try. I'll be honest, I probably wouldn't go there on my own had it not been for the special + rave reviews for their chicken as I usually get my "sui meh" from next door. My daughter who is a picky eater, especially with her chicken gave it two thumbs up! The portions are huge so you can easily feed a few adults with an added side of greens to round up the meal. The owner was friendly and service was prompt. He told me my food would be ready in 8 min sharp but I told him to take his time as I needed to make a few stops. Went back in 20 minutes and my food was nicely packed and ready to go for me. Support the family-owned restaurant and give this place a try if you're in the area! More than anything, they need folks to patronize during this hard time so they can stay afloat and be around for years to come. Hainanese Chicken is a bargain. They have a special today $25 for the whole chicken with rice and soup. Great. They only give you two small containers of garlic ginger. They gave me an extra one. On our first visit to Pop Kitchen, my dad and I opted to get prepared items instead of the hot pot. We started off with dry-fried green beans with preserved vegetables which was scrumptious. Those bits of preserved vegetables gave the perfect salty/tart accent to the classic dish. Next arrived our order of salt and pepper squid. Don't expect the small, delicate tubes and tentacles with a thin batter that's barely crisp that one sees at other places. Pop's version is meaty but tender with a shatteringly crunchy coating and well-balanced seasoning...just a touch of heat from chopped jalapenos. Our third dish was a surprisingly delicious gamble...fish fillet with bitter melon. I wanted the version with pork spare ribs but dad is a seafood guy so we opted for the fish. The fish was a tad too tender for my taste but overall, the dish was a success. I love bitter melon so I primarily ate the veggies and left the fish for my dad. We rounded out the meal with my personal favorite...shrimp with eggs. It's homey and old-fashioned but I always ask for this wherever I go. It's how I gauge Cantonese restaurants and whether I would return for subsequent visits. The shrimp was perfectly cooked with that juicy snap that only experienced cooks are able to achieve. The scrambled eggs was soft and fluffy, almost layered and beautifully complimented the abundant large shrimp. Based on this visit, we will definitely be back.
