We wanted some late night dinner and we searched yelp for something on the way that was open late and was good because most of the fast food places around the area had less than three stars. I'm really glad that we tried poor boy. We walked in past 11 PM and they had the lobby closed so you had to order through a speaker through like a glass window so there's no indoor or outdoor seating past a certain time. I'm guessing for safety. The menu is pretty big, but we scrolled through yelp beforehand just to see what we liked and kind of had an idea walking in so we ordered our food and I would say it took no more than 10 minutes to get it. We took it back to the hotel and the super that we ordered was massive. It's enough for two people to share. In my opinion. The bread was really fresh and the ingredients tasted fresh as well. I'm not sure if it was the condiments or maybe they put oil on the sandwich but I don't think it would last a second day because the bread was starting to get soggy, but it tasted really good. The size of the garlic fries was also great. We were able to share that and it tasted so garlic and delicious. It also had a seasoning I think it was Cajun but not sure because it wasn't spicy but that tasted good too. I wish I could've eaten both more fresh, but unfortunately, we had to take it back to the hotel But the fries and the sandwich still tasted great an hour later.

Poor Boy is a nice place to get lunch in Maywood, and definitely a great place for lunch if you're on your way to Brookfield Zoo down the street. The Italian beef sandwiches are great, and the gyro platter is massive and delicious as well. They give you a ton of food, and the service is friendly. There isn't a bad thing on the menu, it's all great and much cheaper than eating at the zoo. It's very small inside for dine in but definitely a nice quick, fresh fast food place to check out. Highly recommended.

I wish I had a photo of that hot beef sandwich. Better than any "Po'Boy" I ever had in New Orleans. Perfect combination of sliced beef, peppers, onions, and some sausage. Getting dipped in au jus, I thought it might be a mess to eat after it was wrapped up for take out, but it soaked perfectly into the bread and meat and was the perfect texture without falling apart on the ride home. Shoestring fries are fried to a soft and mushy texture (which I personally like- but you may not if you want crunchy.)

Johnnie's is an icon, just based on the experience of listening to that guy talk. Ah, but he's long gone, and new ownership abounds. But the beef is still great. One of the best beef sandwiches around, combos that are seasoned just right, and Italian ice That hits the spot on a hot summer day. I think the hot dogs are just a throw in, and the fries are decent. But it's the beef that keeps bringing you back. Not much ambiance, unless you want to stand and watch the cars roll by on North Avenue, but the smell of the sausage cooking is intoxicating. The price of the beef has gone up, and I swear it's a tad smaller, but if you're in the neighborhood, nothing hits the spot quite like a Johnnie's beef sandwich. I can still hear the big guy...."Whaddah need, gimmie a beef, wet, sweet and hot, That'l be nine fiffy two, bag it, next!" I miss him...

We ordered it dipped, and the beef was tender, flavorful, and packed with rich gravy without becoming soggy. It lived up to the reputation that so many Chicago locals talk about. The cheeseburger was okay, but the patty was smaller than expected and could have used a bit more seasoning to really stand out. It wasn't bad, just a little underwhelming compared to other spots. The loaded fries were a highlight--topped with cheese, Italian beef, and fresh jalapeños. They were flavorful and absolutely massive, easily a meal on their own. We also had the breaded steak sandwich, which was decent but could have used some jalapeños for extra flavor. Portion-wise, it was very generous and easily enough for two people to share. The chicken fingers were just okay--good size, but again, a bit more seasoning would have helped. The mushrooms were solid, and the onion rings were better than most--big and crispy--but there were quite a few broken pieces. We also tried the famous cannoli shake, which tasted exactly like you'd expect--a cannoli in liquid form. If you like cannolis, you'll probably enjoy it. Overall, not a bad spot with generous portions and friendly service, but some items--especially the burgers--could use a bit more flavor and a larger patty to really stand out.
