We had ordered from here bc I'm always down to eat a gyro. My husband had a burger, which he said was below average and he didn't finish it. 2 of my girls had chicken tenders and fries. They didn't even touch their tenders. They didn't like them. It was like their oil they fry them in hasn't been changed in awhile. They said the ketchup tasted weird too. Which it did but more bbq sauce then ketchup. Another daughter had a hotdog. She said it just tasted like a hotdog. Nothing special. I had gyro. It tasted like just a typical gyro. The tzatziki wasn't as good as others I've had before. We are in from out of town so we figured we try and grab a quick bite here. Food is less than average. We ordered a gyros plate. The nastiest fries I was ever served, dark brown limp and grease soaked and into the trash. One pita was hard like a cracker and grease soaked. The sauce was poured into one of the little compartments as was the salad and everything was scattered together, I remember little containers for the sauce. Yep. This is exactly what I look for when I travel. A cozy little restaurant. When I walked in, the owner(?)/cook(?) was in the dining room chatting with a couple folks. Maybe just regular customers. Maybe family or friends. Either way, it was a pleasant environment to walk into after dealing with traffic. Rocky's delivers a quality Gyro with a smile. Though I didn't see it from the dining room, I'm sure the gyro meat was cut from a rotisserie on premesis, as opposed to the frozen gyro meat "planks" some other places offer. The meat was juicy and tender, smoky and flavorful. The handmade tzatziki sauce was very good, and obviously something they are proud of. They charge 63¢ for each additional cup, but it's worth the extra change. I ordered my old faithful onion rings as a side. That counts as a vegetable, right? They were good. Not great, but not bad at all. What really "did it" for me at Rocky's was the service. The lady who rang up my order and served the food was genuinely patient and friendly. The food portions were quite large, and the quality of the ingredients is impressive. I'm holding back on the fifth star, because the dining room could use some cleanup (ceiling tiles.) A while back I visited Rocky's Gyros in Berkeley, not too long after I posted my review I got a message from management of this establishment who were a little unhappy about the fact that I gave them two stars for reasons beyond their control (particularly a beggar came into the restaurant, interrupted the meal and asked for money). So I put them on my list of places to revisit and here we are some months later and I've had this opportunity. In my most recent visit to Rocky's Gyros I got a hot dog and fries and a drink. The food was out quickly and I soon started to dig in after investigating the dog. The bun here was a non-poppy seed bun. There was some dryness, though it was definitely soft. There was some celery salt on the hot dog (well mostly on the pickle slice), some thick tomato slices, and some nice sport peppers. The onion on this hot dog was thickly cut and a good compliment.The sausage used here was skinless, the relish was bright and green and had a nice taste to it. The mustard was well applied. Overall this was a pretty average hot dog, made well enough to not disappoint but nothing really stood out. What was different about the food this time around was the french fries. The fries here used to be long steak style fries, these have been replaced by crinkle cut fries. I prefer the crinkle cut fries as they have a slightly crispier outside and a nicer potato paste taste on the inside. Overall I was happy with the fry upgrade. I am going to raise my score for Rockys from two stars to three. This was definitely a better experience than my first visit, and I like the change in french fries. read more

Where do I start? I've lived in the neighborhood for almost 30 years. Don't get me wrong, I've given thought to try this place. But obviously not much thought. It's truly a hidden gem when it comes to Gyros. Because it says Rocky's gyros right? So I asked a family member, about Gyro's and I thought about Aristons first. Which is another staple in the neighborhood. But he said NO, try Rocky's. The tzatziki sauce is much better. So not only did I try the gyro once, I had it two days in a row! That's how good it was! The meat and the sauce is FYE! And apparently they fry their fries in fresh oil. Because both times, I got good hot fries! I'm from Chicago/ born and raised! So greektown has some of the best gyros. This spot is very good, I tried the Philly, Italian and, Corned beefs. Although, I didn't like the corned beef that much the other two were yummy. I take my Italian beef on garlic bread with sweet peppers, double dipped with cheese, so good. I tried the chicken today and guess what? I'm never going anywhere else, you would think some restaurant tucked in the burbs would have so-so chicken. Not them. It is very good and tender fried chicken. I almost hate to admit it, but I've been known to get takeout at Rocky's more than a couple times a week. The food is great, although I'm partial to their hot dogs and gyros (which I just finished). They have great salads, too. John is always friendly and takes time out to say hi and ask how your day is going. The staff is friendly, too. If you're driving down St. Charles Road, you should stop in and try for yourself. In all the time I've been going there, I've never once had a bad meal. read more

Restaurants of this style are ubiquitous around Chicago, but for good reason. They do it right and they do it well. Rocky's is a pretty small and unassuming place on St. Charles Road just after you cross 290 coming from Elmhurst, so if you're headed in either direction on 290, it's worth a little jaunt to check this place out. My burger was really good, and I liked that they had taken the time to do it well, when a burger could otherwise be a menu item that they might be tempted to phone in. The chicken fingers we ordered were nice and fresh too, and nicely breaded. All in all, an inexpensive but really tasty place to eat. read more

I just had the pleasure of finding this restaurant yesterday: while I was in the area for a new job. I came in for lunch time: and had bought the Rocky Burger. This was cooked to perfection, and the toppings mad this a very tasty meal. It didn't come with fries, which I thought it would have: but it really was my fault for assuming that. Because I so enjoyed my lunch from them: I returned again a few hours later for dinner. I noticed when I arrived the second time, that they had rib tips: something that I love, and have had a taste for, for a long time. I ordered their large order, and I have to say: these were some if the best tips I have EVER had. The sauce was wonderful...the tips were tender, with minimal fat content. The price was fair: being what I would have expected for such a large portion. The owner, John: is very personable and attentive to my needs. We just came back from this restaurant. I have lived in Bellwood since I was 12 and I am now 26 and I have never noticed how long this restaurant has been here. This was my first time there... I searched for a nearby restaurant we could walk to and found this restaurant that did not have bad reviews so we decided to try it. I do not know if the lady at the front taking the orders is the same one previous people have talked about because my personal experience with her was good. She was very nice and helpful even asked us if our food was good, which it was. Our order did not take long at all! It was nice and fresh. The hot dog was great and so was the cheeseburger that I purchased for my children. The fries were fresh and cooked perfectly, not burnt at all, not salty, nor cold. This place have really changed over time. My orders have not been right!! I get hone take out my order from the bag, I ask for grill onions on my gyro, I get raw. They have gotten stingy on the fries. Ask for extra cucumber sauce, I pay for it but it's not in my bag. The slot machines that are now there have taken away the quality of service. I don't get to out Berkeley as much as I should, but I did find myself there this weekend while looking for a reasonably priced cat scratch post for my sister's Christmas gift. After successfully finding the perfect post I built up quite an appetite and decided to stop in at Rocky's for lunch. I ordered a hot dog, a gyro, fries and three glasses of water (I was thirsty from the gift hunt). I will review each item in detail: Hot dog: bland and rather pedestrian. I requested it to have mayo, tomatoes and celery salt. They begrudgingly made it this way, but it still didn't help the cause. This tasted like one I would make in college when I was living on an extremely fixed income. I had to use some reserve mayo to moisten the dry bun. Gyro: this was better. Again, asked for mayo, tomato and celery salt as the condiments. I was furious when halfway home I realize they put tsatzki sauce and onions on it. Had to scrape that junk off and again use reserve mayo. A little spilled on my floor mats, but my dog licked it off when I got home. Fries: very good. I ate the whole order and didnt really need to use much dipping sauce. One drawback would be that I asked for three glasses of water, but was questioned as to why I couldn't just order a pop. I'll tell you why...I was about to consume about 2500 calories and drive back home. The last thing I would need is another 600 calories from a few Cokes! Sheesh! read more

This place is literally 2 blocks away and I eat here every so often. I like the hot dogs and fries. I've never seen anything dirty, my food was never cold or bad tasting and everything is priced moderately.Yes, the lady that works there does have an abrasive speaking voice but I don't think she's rude she just sounds like that.. Just happened to be in the area on business and got hungry.Not having many places to choose from in the area I came across this place ! Seen they sell Gyro sandwiches, Haven't had one in a long time I decided to stop and try it out. GLAD I DID! I forgot how good these were and definitely was not a disappointment here! Price was right not expensive at all either! Looks like they have a lot of other good items on the menu also. Been here a couple times and had the two hot dog special. Which is great with all the fresh trimmings of a Chicago dog. And comes with fries. Today I had the craving for a gyro. And Rocky's delivered! I got the gyro plate and it was everything I wanted. There was enough meat and pita for two or two separate meals. Plenty of fresh onions and tomatoes and plenty of tzatziki! The pita was toasted perfectly. The meat was flavorful and not greasy like other gyro joints. The plate also comes with a fresh lil side salad. And the fries were perfectly cooked nice n crunchy on the outside n soft on the inside. I also got a tamale which was the lil frozen kind that they microwave. A nice side/appetizer but not homemade. I've been very satisfied every time I've eaten here and will continue to come here. Can't wait to try more menu items. Very clean dining room. Just found this gem of a little restaurant in the last couple of months. I live in Elmhurst and have driven past this restaurant for years and finally stopped in. The staff is very friendly & accomodating. The gyros are great and the Maxwell pork sandwich is very unique & so good. The portions are large and the prices are reasonable. Can't wait to try the special on Friday nights - Ribs. Be sure to stop by. You will not regret it. It is so nice to find local restaurants that are not chains. Bon Appetit! read more
