Four of us had a great experience at Modern Plate. We sat outside with very good service and communication regarding a couple of tricky orders. The girls shopped at the boutique next door as we enjoyed watching Elmhurst pass by. Beers were ice cold and the spritzers were perfect. I had the pot roast dip sandwich with fries. Best dip sandwich ever, and I have had plenty of French dips in my long career. Everyone at our table loved their meals! When you're there Check out the back of the restaurant, it is a music venue. This was our third visit to Modern Plate and I think the food keeps getting better! The Only negative was the electric scooters and bikes flying by the outside tables and past the signs saying please walk your wheels. We went here for a friend's birthday and it was a great spot! The menu is extensive (almost too many options!!!) and there really is something for everyone. The space is clean, enticing, and as the name implies, modern. The service was very friendly, and the manager stopped by to check in twice. We ordered a few different starters and everyone got their own entrees. My favorite appetizer was the pork belly, and I really enjoyed my bucatini sausage pasta. At the top, a REALLY yum OldFashioned! For starters, Beef Barley Soup wot tasted fresh-made, good and hearty. Entreé? Steak Frites with Broccolini and Truffle Fries, all top-notch. I can't remember how I learned of this place, it may have been an ad on Facebook. When I walked in, I wasn't 100% sure they actually do breakfast because their entire dining area and outdoor patio combined, only had one customer. Definitely is a very swanky dining room. Complete with cloth napkins, and a snazzy interior. Felt bad for my server since there was no other tables for her. They actually had two servers on staff. Looking over the menu, which apparently changes from time to time, I was a little taken back by the prices. I went with a skillet and was disappointed when I learned they serve the potatoes in whole form. They are those little dainty potatoes, but I certainly prefer real hashbrowns. Even the places that serve you diced potatoes offer more flavor. I almost was gonna pull all the potatoes out and ask for some butter and sour cream. The range of meats they had in the meat sweats skillet all seem to be a little dried out, especially the pork belly. For some reason, they only serve you one piece of toast, but that wasn't such a big deal. I was kind of bummed that the over easy eggs had no ooze to them. I did enjoy the coffee and again the service was top-notch. I can only assume they must do a much brisk lunch and dinner. When it was getting time to leave, for some reason, they set a table of five directly next to me. I found that comical since there was probably 40 other tables in the place that had no one at it. There was one other couple of ladies that had arrived and was sitting on the patio. For $30 dollars with tip I definitely felt it was overpriced. read more

Spacious place and nice set up. Would imagine it's great for large groups. Came on a Wednesday so it was pretty empty. Took a while to get our drinks, but appetizer came out promptly. Lemon drop martini was underwhelming and surprised it came without a sugar rim, but enjoyed the blood orange gin fizz. Food was good and nice portion sizes. Lots to choose from on the menu and I enjoyed the truffle fries. There is an extra 3% charge if you pay with a credit card. We were there during happy hour and the drinks weren't discounted on our bill. Waitress was very quick to fix it, but it took a while after to pay our check and head out. I met a group of friends for lunch here, and we were very pleasantly surprised at the entire experience. The ambiance is very nice, leaning toward upscale with a refined chic that's inviting and comfortable. The service was knowledgeable, attentive and pleasant. Their seasonal cocktail, the pecan old fashioned, was TOO good - a big hit at our table. My shrimp ceasar salad was fresh and delicious. It came with a pile of parmesan, but that was easily pushed to the side and nice to have in case I wanted more. My friend loved Tuscan pannini sandwich and ate the whole thing after planning to eat only half. I was also shocked to see the huge event space they have behind the restaurant. This place had been on my list to try for some time. I made reservations for a Saturday night, and good thing I did as it gets pretty busy. Our sever was Jaime and he was excellent. He took the time to explain the menu and specials. They have a seasonal cocktail list with a ton of mocktails as well. Favorites among our group was the blackberry bourbon smash and Carmel appletini. Food was excellent! I had the chicken skewers and added shrimp to it and it was amazing. Very flavorful. My friend had the short rib risotto and I tried some and it was tasty. They were delicious! For a starter - the table shared the Three Cheese Flat Bread. Sounds pretty simple, right? It was - but a really great starter. We all thoroughly enjoyed it. Great crust / cheese and large enough to share at the table. For entrees - I was between several dishes (b/c it's a great menu) but I got the grain bowl. I was made fun of at the table b/c of the simple choice. It was delicious and perfect for the evening. This is now my second time here while visiting my sister and once again, I left here super satiated and happy! Being a celiac, it's already hard to find fries that are in a dedicated fryer, but this place does not disappoint! Their sweet potato fries are probably the best I've ever had and they have a lot of GF options! Had other lunch plans that fell through. It must of been a sign. I frequent downtown elmhurst...so a family member and I landed here. We went to this new-to-us restaurant yesterday on the way home from the city. It has a bar area, large nicely decorated indoor dining room and outside dining along the sidewalk. We chose to sit outside since it was beautiful weather. Our server was Emily, who was so sweet, very attentive and provided great service. My husband and I didn't have any cocktails - next time. We decided to share a couple items off the menu. We shared the Fig n' Awesome Burger - fig jam, caramelized onion, arugula, havarti cheese - it was friggin' amazing!! The restaurant was kind enough to split the burger and put it on two plates. We chose sweet potato fries as our side and they were the best I've ever had. They were thicker crinkle cut and had a real nice crisp on the outside but soft on the inside. We also shared Nonna's Meatball. There was a slight glitch as they had a huge catering order and had to make new meatballs from scratch so we had to wait a bit to get this appetizer. It gave us time to digest the decadent burger we just ate. When the manager Jason apologized for the delay, I mentioned to him at that time that I had to order Nonna's Meatball because I just became a Nonna and we were just coming back from meeting our granddaughter at Northwestern. Jason comp'd us this appetizer as a congratulations. What?! So very nice! Great customer service for the delay and the congrats. We'll definitely be back to dine at Modern Plate again. The atmosphere was wonderful with tons of seats, cool bar, and modern patterns/textures. I came for a work lunch and all three of us enjoyed our experience! I got the Fig'n Awesome Burger... DELICIOUS! Perfect balance of sweet and savory as well as a great portion size. My coworkers got the slider trio (comes with three different slider types to sample) and a vegan burger. I got to try one of the sweet potato fries and they were perfectly crunchy. My only negative note was drinks weren't refilled unless asked for and some staff felt a bit flustered. The spouse and I visited during restaurant week. It's a fancy-looking place with prices to match, though there are TV's in the bar area. It's the sort of place that puts short ribs, bacon, or prosciutto into dishes to elevate them, so while there are vegetarian options, you'll have to pick your way through the menu. Gluten-free items and vegetarian items are supposedly marked, but the "V" is applied haphazardly and it doesn't look like they bothered to apply it to the sides, so ask questions. The staff is open to making substitutions - apparently the "Vodka pasta" on the prix fixe menu was "Vodka pasta with chicken" (rather an important omission). I got the special prix fixe menu: pesto bruschetta; vodka pasta (with broccoli substituted); the spouse got the vegan burger and an order of the roasted cauliflower. Portions were generous and the food was really good. The cauliflower in jalapeno jam sauce could have used more browning but tasted fine; the vodka sauce married beautifully with the broccoli, surprisingly enough, and the broccoli was perfectly cooked. The pesto bruschetta was on a high quality bread with some toothiness to it; the burger might have been commercial (we couldn't tell). Overall, high quality food with the frou-frou touches you might expect: the burger and bruschetta both featured balsamic vinegar; the burger came with arugula; there is no salt/pepper/ketchup on the tables; the "key lime pie" is deconstructed and comes in a sundae glass. Attentive service and plenty of time to linger over your food. Dinner for two (restaurant week special plus a drink, app and main) ran $86 with tip. read more

We also really enjoyed the pork belly and bacon wrapped date appetizers. We sat outside which was fantastic even with the construction work going on across the street. I came in on a Tuesday around 2pm a few months ago. It was slow (post lunch and pre dinner time) and I think there was only one server on the floor and a bartender. Even so, the service was very slow. I don't blame the server at all, but more of a manager mishap. I had the tuna tare tare wontons and Ceasar salad for lunch. They were both good but way too many sauces on the wonton it became a soppy mess of too many flavors to decide which one was appealing. Unfortunately the salad suffered the same soggy fate. Maybe if I tried something different the price would be worth it but I spent nearly 50 dollars so meh. Nice vibes though. read more
