Every year during Lent, people ask me where to find the best fish sandwich. After trying the Cod Sandwich at The Original Chickie's Beef, I've got my answer--Chickie's in Hillside, Illinois! Perfectly crispy cod with tartar sauce and that classic, no-frills flavor that just hits right. It's only around Fridays during Lent, which makes it even more of a must-have this time of year.

Had one final opportunity to try a Chicago Italian Beef sandwich before my wife and I headed back to California from our Chicago visit. So decided to stop-in to Chickies (very close to our aunt's home) for carryout during our final night. It's large inside for dining in, and has a classic Chicago-style set-up. You order and pay for your food first, and then wait for your number/name to be called. It took about 10 minutes for the food to be ready, and the big order was accurate and given to us fresh/hot. As a whole the food was good. The chicken tenders were definitely service food grade, but was prepared well and came with greasy fries. My wife's Italian beef sandwich was well flavored, and I thought my one bite was really good: plenty of thinly sliced beef in a flavorful gravy (definitely better than the Italian beef from Portillos lately). One unusual menu item I tried was the italian beef egg rolls: a bit of italian beef with provolone cheese, wrapped tightly in an egg roll wrapper. It comes with au jus (gravy) for dipping. Not sure if it really should work, but was tasty, nevertheless. What I really wanted was a Chicago-style hot dog. They do have vienna beef served here, but neither their hot dogs or burgers has fresh tomato as a topping...so no Chicago-style available.

Definitely surpassed expectations. I ordered the Chickies Italian beef with hot giardiniera with fries and drink, plus a hamburger and small cannoli. The beef and burgers were both great. Hand cut fries were seasoned well and a bit greasy which is expected. The small cannoli was just enough sweet to finish off the meal. Service was fast and friendly, relaxing ambience.

Pretty solid beef hot dipped. My first visit was pretty good. Beef has a bit of a chew but good flavor and heat from the giardiniera. Make it a meal and you'll get a ridiculous amount of fries. Barq's root beer always a plus. Staff was a bit distracted and wasn't paying attention to the words coming out of my mouth. I joked with him about it. Dining room was well kept. A reputable 8.2 for this bad boy.

Chickies was really good! The chicken sandwich was great! Service was great. It didn't take long to prepare & serve us our food! It's clean in this establishment. We will be back. The lemon Italian ice was good too!

Food and service are great. Beefs are tasty with generous helpings of peppers. Great fries. Not a huge seating area. Comfortable inside.

Excellent service. Quick, fresh food. Little Village burger is amazing. My kids love the pizza and ravioli. For a treat, definitely get a cannoli shake.

Chickies. Clean. Friendly. Quick. Best beef sandwiches in town. What's not to like? Tonight got their new breaded steak sandwich and I'm going to mark it down from 5 stars to 4.97. Everyone knows Chicago Beef. But the breaded steak is the secret handshake of the Chicagoland area. They all vary slightly...but the common denominator is they're always too much of a sandwich. I felt like this wasn't too much...but just right. I wanted more. I wanted self loathing. I wanted judgement. I wanted the abject shame of a full breaded steak and I got mere satisfaction. Chickies forever. Forever Chickies.

I ordered a $5.95 Hot Dog & Fries and was charged $6.49 at the drive up. She also tried to short change me $1.00.

Food was good, but what restaurant business doesn't have hot tea or bread? Seriously?

Found this place on the way back home from Oak Park after my first stop for an Italian beef (Poor…read moreBoy) had closed early for the night and I'm glad I did. Ariston makes a decent beef sandwich with soft bread, a nice serving of sliced beef, excellent tasting au jus and good giardineira. The medium fries and beef combo that comes with a canned drink was just under $15 which is a bit pricey but still not bad for the quality. Their crinkle cut fries are delicious and we're served crispy and piping hot. I luckily got in a little after 12:15am and was able to beat out the last minute rush as a good 5-6 cars pulled into the lot after I ordered. I don't think there would have been much of a wait even I had been a little later though as my order was ready in less than 5 mins. This made me a little worried but like I mentioned the food ended up being good. The staff were not necessarily friendly but I wouldn't characterize them as rude either. They just seemed to be really dialed in to get through all the orders which I appreciated. The interior is pretty lived in but it's not overly dirty or anything. They have an almost ridiculously extensive menu so I can't say much for the rest of the food but if a good beef and fries late at night is what you're looking for Ariston is a good option.

nice staff and food always good! fast service, fair prices. I have been a fan for over a decaderead more

We were already in the area to check out Frank Lloyd Wright's studio and then came here for lunch afterwards. We were lucky that it was a Monday at lunch time and not a more traditional peak time to be there because we got a parking space fairly quickly and even though we saw the line out the door, it moved very fast. It's very much a cash-only and no-frills type of place. Don't come here expecting them to be super friendly to you. You go up there knowing what you want to order and they are quick and on it. When you're paying, they're already getting the other customer's (behind you) order. We went for an Italian beef sandwich to split as well as a side of fries and an Italian ice. Everything was excellent. Definitely the best Italian beef I've ever had and one of my friends said it was one of the best foods he had on his week trip here. Will definitely need to return!

I tried the Italian beef and sausage combo with sweet and spicy peppers. Tasty, but a mouthful--I'd get the sausage on its own next time and peppers on the side.
