After reading about the best places for Italian beef in Chicagoland, I decided to try this place. They have a private parking lot that is shared with other establishments. Inside it wasn't too busy and they had 60's music playing. Plenty of seating. You place your order and pay, then you get a ticket number. They call your ticket number and you pick up your food at the very end of the restaurant. You can't miss it. I ordered the super beef combo meal. Super beef is 9 inches long. I was amazed after opening it up of how much meat they gave me. Compared to Portillos and Buona, they give you way more. In terms of quantity, they beat them. The sweet bell peppers are huge and tasty. The bread was dipped and flavorful. The meat, while bountiful, could be more moist. In some parts it was kind of dry. The French fries were similar to the same kind that McDonald's uses, except they tasted better. Just enough salt. Overall, I would give a 4 out of 5. It was a good lunch. Every time we go to Pop's, there always seems to be an issue. On Saturday, 10/19/2019, we went out to Pop's to eat. Girlfriend ordered a polish. Later that day she got a bad case of food poisoning. I make a point to swing by here whenever I'm out in Lyons. Can't beat the 2 for $5 burgers, and they're actually very decent too. The breaded steak is good - looks small, but packs a punch. Never tried the ital beef or sausage - next time. Friendly, attentive staff every time I've been there. No complaints. read more

Me and my coworkers go here maybe twice a year to enjoy good food at a decent price. You can tell this place is trying to imitate Portillo's in decor and the food they serve, but it's just missing that umph that makes Portillo's so much better! I wish they had better seating too, it gets cramped real fast and the seats feel super cheap. The parking lot is in the same shape, it's very small and crowded. Don't try the monster dog they have...it's just too much and its not even a frank or Vienna beef!!! Not to mention the only time I had it they burned a lot of it so imagine eating a 2 foot long dry, overcooked hot dog with crap loads of mustard and relish...yeah...it becomes torture after awhile. Everything else is pretty standard fare aside from the tuna salad which is the usual bland mess you find at places nowadays (what happened to good old country tuna salad with boiled eggs, relish, paprika, sugar, mustard, etc??!?!?!) The wait here is also inconsistent. Sometimes they have your food out in minutes then the next time you come you'll order something similar and it'll be 20 minutes before you're chowing down. They've been actively taking steps to cut down on the wait so I can't really knock them on it. Overall I'll keep popping in here every once in awhile, but it won't be making my top 10 list anytime soon. 3/5 stars *Tip: Maybe its just me as well, but this place is a dead zone for AT&T customers. I can't get service here and there came a point where an urgent matter came in at work and I didn't respond because I didn't realize I wasn't getting any messages. So I am craving - CRAVING - a gyro sandwich. (For the uninitiated - and you really don't know what you're missing - gyro is a Greek specialty sandwich with lamb and olives and cucumber sauce and tomatoes on a pita.) A sign from God himself looms over me on I-55 south; FULL-SIZED Gyro sandwiches at Pop's. My heart swelled. Full sized? Surely this will be some type of gyro-heaven. I steered my vehicle around a few winding roads in the near-by suburb and pulled up at Pop's. Upon entering I was greeted by the standard suburban-teen-counter girl. She was pleasant enough. I ordered my food and sat down. It was pretty quick and the expediter was cordial. I unwrapped the "full sized" gyro and was a little curious. I assumed full sized meant adult sized. This thing was not much bigger than an infant's forearm (with much less meat). I have had bigger servings at the old grub-for-a-buck (sweet sweet memories). The quality wasn't bad - the amount of food was suspect. There are too many good gyros out there to fall for the full sized con. Almost makes me lose faith in that greatest of American advertising venues - the billboard. read more

I had my son pick up some food for me at the Lyons location of Pops because I'm handicapped. I have been going to this location for many many years. They hand a two double cheeseburger special for $7.99. I wanted four sandwiches and my son picked up an extra one for himself. He also bought a malt and asked for eight sport Peppers to go in my sandwiches. Was charged $37.17. Didn't notice the overcharge until a couple of days later. Call me to get this rectified and was bounced from the person who took the phone call to somebody that was supposed to be the owner Beth. She said she would call me back in an hour and 3 hours later still no call. When I called back the girl I originally talked to since she already left. After a few minutes another guy called who said he was the general manager and said then if I didn't have my receipt which I didn't have readily available I was out of luck. Told me my son would have had to ask for the special. It was not the responsibility to offer the special. They seem like they will go out of their way to screw their customers. Imagine the guy telling me that I'm out of luck because my son just didn't know how to order the stuff and it's not the responsibility for that person to tell me that the price would be cheaper if I order them in pairs. Teriblel customer service. Will absolutely never go back. Beware of this place or you'll get screwed too. read more

My group sampled/shared the beef/sausage combo (OK bread, no flavor to beef/juice, good spice to sausage), chili cheese dog with no redeeming quality and the monster dog (salty meat). So much that it makes me wonder what they are trying to cover up. The bread was good, the texture of the meat wasn't bad, it was a lil dry even after requesting it "wet" but there was no beef flavor whatsoever. The meatball sandwich wasn't over-garlic'd ... but there was way too much parmesan cheese used in the meatballs making them very salty. The red sauce was heavy and leaned toward the sweet side. Again - the bread was good. The fries aren't much different from Mikey D's other than you get more of 'em. Eveything was reasonably priced & fairly portioned so if they can reign in the mass spicing that's goin' on I think the place could be pretty good - we'll see. Hmmmm .... maybe as a child "Pop" had some horrible accident that tarnished his tastebuds so he has to season things aggressively ... who knows. This place is full of high calorie, high fat, deep-fried yummz. I used to come here and feel my waist belt expand as I ate the cajun cheese curds or the delicious pizza puff that we can only eat in Chicagoland. Today, I discovered the grilled Chicken Wrap. It is a delicious low cal delight wrapped in a tortilla waiting to be devoured. Go through the drive-through. GREAT Italian Beef. I was a huge Novi's (Berwyn) fan, but I like Pop's just as much now....maybe more??? Their hot pepper mix (kind of a medium heat gardiniera with not a lot of hot peppers in it) absolutely elevates the sandwich from a very, very good beef to a great one. I've had some other menu items (hot dog, chili dog, soup) and wasn't very impressed - they're OK, but I've had better. I'll stick to the beef. Their fries are really good too - thin cut, crunchy outside, soft inside...and a half order is as much as a full order elsewhere. Pop's used to be a very good restaurant when they first opened. I was looking forward to having a Portillo's knock-off near my house. However, after receiving bad food from them and terrible customer service, they've really gone downhill. If you ever go to Pop's, do yourself a favor and DO NOT get anything with chicken in it. They like to serve raw chicken. My theory is that they only put grill marks on their chicken and then serve it without checking the inner temperature. I received a grilled chicken sandwich from them before and it was literally raw inside. I called them back to get a refund and what did they give me? They gave me a voucher for a free chicken sandwich. Sure, like I'll order a chicken sandwich from them ever again. If you get a salad from Pop's, expect wilted and brown lettuce chunks and terribly cut vegetables. If you order their French onion soup, expect stale croutons floating around in it. Customer service at Pop's is noticeably not their number one concern. The employees in the drive-thru are terrible. They are never friendly and they always forget items in orders. If for some reason you do visit Pop's, their cheeseburgers are decent. They may be pink on the inside, but that's how some people eat their burgers, so that's alright. Their fries are also pretty good, and they give you plenty of them with your order. Their prices are also good and cheap. Meals for three people is under $20. read more

I would not describe the food as amazing, but solid, to the limited extent I have sampled their menu. That would be on their specials - two double cheeseburgers for five bucks, Italian beef and fries for five bucks (those seem to be perpetual daily specials). My wife has had the chicken wrap, without complaints. But the best deal is the Sunday gyro deal for $3.50. You can feed your family of four for $14 (plus tax). You are not going to find the best Italian beef there - that's probably Johnny's. And it's not the best gyro--- there are better. But if you wanted to pick up 2 cheeseburgers, a gyro and an Italian beef you will not be disappointed by any means. And the prices on the specials simply cannot be beat. They don't gouge you in the little ways that some restaurants do - that five dollar Italian beef and fries comes with both sweet peppers and hot peppers, if you like, with no up charge. Having said that, getting charged for a bacon upgrade on a bacon chicken breast (see earlier review by Jerry C) undercuts that somewhat. Only complaint I would have is that the bread on the beef doesn't stand up as well as it should to a dip. I've never been the victim of rude service there. It's a clean, fairly well run fast food place. You could do a lot worse. Two tips - the five dollar Italian beef special is actually better deal than the jumbo Italian beef for two - the latter of which is something like nine dollars. You get a lot more food if you just order two five dollar beefs and pay the extra dollar. Don't make the mistake that I did of going in through the Dunkin Doughnuts drive-through - you'll have to make an excruciating three-point turn in close quarters to get into the right drive-through. You go into the Pop's drive-through, not by entering the parking lot, but by going a little further (30 feet) south on Joliet Avenue and making a sharp right. read more

WORST SERVICE EVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I stopped by for lunch today and placed my order. The girl that waited on me was such a complete and total moron she never gave me a cup for my drink. I then helped myself to one, and the other girl behind the counter said, "that's a medium cup sir, you ordered a small". So, I said, "if you would have given me a cup in the first place, I'd have the right size". With that, I grabbed a small cup. Then she has the gall to say, "excuse me, you took two cups". So, I threw the other cup back on the counter, and told her she and sidekick needed to learn to have some respect for their customers.... Pound It Pop's...... I don't appreciate getting treated like a child. I actually would have given 2 stars being that I like their beef, but the rotten customer service still doesn't make up for it !!!!!!!!!!!!! Overpriced food and very small portions. It's always around $20 for two people to have burger fries and a drink. Not worth it

I think Pop's tries to be everything to everyone, for better or worse. Beef, dogs, burgers, sandwiches, gyros, soups, salads, soft drinks, beer, etc. The atmosphere is nice and the workers are always pleasant. Problem is, all the food is either average or inconsistent. The hotdogs are average at best. They do not compare, for instance, to Portillo's. The beef can be tasty but is hit or miss in execution. Further, the 3 dollar gyros are inconsistent. I ordered 2 gyros with extra sauce. One had almost no sauce and was dry, yet dripping through the bag with grease. The second had more sauce, which made the sandwich juicier at least. Overall, this inconsistency makes customers not want to return, as we do not know what we'll get from visit to visit. Take your chances. Pop's can be good, but they need to be sure their offerings are more consistent. read more

I pretty much can't believe this place is still in business. They should be absolutely ashamed to serve the beef sandwiches that they serve. They have virtually no taste at all. Usually a highschooler is taking your order which is okay except for the fact that their service is very very poor. How could I almost forget to mention how consistent it is. Consistently poor! I'd never even heard of Pop's Italian Beef & Sausage, but when a new restaurant opened in Lyons, I figured I had to try it. Being an Italian Beef aficionado, and swaying towards a few local favorites, I figured, "What the heck?" Boy, am I glad I did! I now put Pop's right up at the top with Johnny's Italian Beef in Westmont, with Portillo's and Buona coming in shortly after. I tried the $4.19 regular beef. The beef has such tenderness that it literally melts in your mouth. The au jus has just the right amount of spiciness that when you finish the sandwich you wish you had more! I opted for the red sauce, and was greeted with a memorable flavor that reminded me of Spaghetti King's marinara which I haven't savored since the 1960's! In combination with a selection of sizes of French Fries, you can get a meal for around $5-$7 and satisfy your appetite. I wasn't sure how well I would like the first sandwich, so I opted for a "normal" size and wish I would have ordered the 9" Super beef sandwich. Pop's is a place that is now right up there among my top favorites, and hope that others try some of the other selections and let us know what you think. My next venture is the combo beef-sausage which is also a reasonable $4.85. read more
