Tom's Carry-Out has a massive menu--everything from Greek chicken and gyros to ribs, fried seafood, burgers, and Mexican dinners. I usually avoid places with menus this big, but Tom's proved to be the exception. I ordered the quesadilla dinner. It was a bit greasy but still tasty and filling. It came with Mexican rice, refried beans (I opted for double rice), and a TomTom tamale. The tamale was a little dry and could have used salsa. My husband had the grilled chicken pita and said it was the best he's ever had--freshly grilled chicken with lettuce and tomato. I also spotted the Greek chicken at another table, and it looked excellent. Beer is reasonably priced at $3.50 for domestic and $4.50 for imported. There's a separate gaming room, which I appreciated since it keeps the dining area quieter. Seating is limited to about a dozen tables, but staff cleared tables quickly, so there was no wait. They also partner with popular delivery services. Parking lot is shared with nearby businesses, but most spots seem to be used by Tom's customers. Haven't been to Tom's in a while. Always had good food. Checked website to see hours. Said open until 8:00 on Sunday. Drove out of my way to get there. Walked in at 7:00. People were eating in there. Was told, "Sorry. Not taking any more orders. I forgot to lock the door. There was another couple behind me who got ticked off also. Hours posted on door said 8:00. WIll not be back. Too bad. I think I've posted a review for Tom's in the past. I usually go here for the gyros, you can't go wrong with that choice. This time I was convinced to try there burrito dinner. So I order a steak burrito with avocado and sour cream, extra for the last 2 items. Rice and beans as sides. Great size, good taste,and fresh steak. Green salsa on the side along with some carrots and jalapeños. I am now going to be torn between my regular favorite place for burritos and Tom's. December 15th ordered lunch about 12:15 p.m. got the two hot dogs fries combo. Sorry to say that the hot dogs were not cooked all the way. Fresh hot dog buns yes - hot dogs were barely boiled? Fries were terribly soggy. I was so hungry that I just ate the meal without complaint. About three hours later very bad stomach ache and almost did not make it to the bathroom. If you need a good Colon Cleanse This Is The Place for you. I don't know why such poor quality food? They usually have a wonderful gyro sandwich combo. Sad. read more

Tom's Carry Out is a decent sized fast food eatery located off of Harlem avenue in Lyons. They have a wide menu of items and a bunch of video gambling machines located in a small dark room off to the side by the bathrooms. In stopping by here I decided to try out the hot dog. The first thing to note was the wait. It took around ten minutes to get two hot dogs and fries. Once I received the hot dogs just looking at them, I knew I wasn't going to be very happy. The hot dog here was served on a hard non poppy seed bun. Excessive amounts of mustard and relish were piled on. The pickle spear used was giant and sour. The sport pepper used on this hot dog was incredibly hot and totally threw off the taste of everything else and will stick in your mouth for hours to come. The signage here indicated that they use Red Hot Chicago hot dogs, but these sure didn't taste like them. It was a skinless frank that had a baloney-like taste with the sausage. Both my friend and I only made it a few bites into these nasty hot dogs. If these weren't bad enough the fries here were even worse. Really nasty examples of fresh cut fries with a bad aftertaste and were so over-fried they crunched. Overall Tom's Carry Out is among the worst fast food eateries I've come across, slow service and horrible food. It should be called "Tom's Throw Out" because that's what happened with most of our awful food. One star for this disaster. read more

I love Toms! Especially when I want lunch for a great price, and a great portion at that. I had the Greek Chicken dinner, it came with Visuvio potatoes, and an awesome Greek Salad, I requested extra Feta cheese cause I can't get enough of that cheese they use, and a half chicken when broth on top. Everything was delicious, hot, and the chicken fell off the bone. The salad was great, and they definitely gave me a good amount of cheese! A solid ONE star. Why? Here is why: 1. Walked into this place, waited a full 3 mins before having to go get someone to take our order. 2. There was an attitude. Why was that? 3. Asked to substitute the fries and got a run down on the price difference WITH an extra side of attitude. (I didn't ask about price...wtf?) 4. Bad gyros. Please don't serve me meat that has been sitting on the spit for who the hell knows how long. It's hard. It's tough. I can see it. It's dark brown and spitting oil. (Mind you, it's only 2 in the afternoon.) Hey, I like grease, but i don't like overcooked meat, because it's HARD and TOUGH and it takes a hell of a lot of sauce to make up for it. And I already paid for extra sauce. And it really didn't help because I threw half of this crap away. So overall, I feel ripped off. Typical greek** carry out place, but the food is good. They have the gyros, the beef, the greek chicken, burgers, etc. They don't have an extensive veggie menu, but they have two things I love there. First, the grilled cheese sandwich. It's on a pita. When I first got it, I was a bit perturbed by the pita, but it's delicious. Also delicious is the Veggie Sandwich. So I ordered it and after eating, 20 minutes later I had a horrible stomach pain and it was from the damn sauce. Nothing else I ate was different. Tom's has been a staple to satisfying the craving for grease in this neighborhood for over 30 years. It actually used to be located on the east side of Harlem prior to the fruit market getting expanded. This place is the go to for a gyros. I have never had a better one, mainly because they brown the meat further before they put it on the pita with the yogurt sauce. It all melds together with the fresh onion and tomato slice. The fries here are also delicious. The skin is left on and the are heavily salted to go perfectly with whatever you order off the menu. Gyros, burgers, or even hot dogs all well prepared at a good price. This is not the type of place you will come and dine to impress you girlfriend's parents, but it's a great place to go when you would like to eat a not so healthy meal that did not come out of a major drive through. read more

Here it is. A rare bad review of a restaurant. My expectations are simple. Have good food. Have pleasant staff and be fair with pricing. I've been going here since 2001. 19 years at the typing of this review. I will not ever return. The owner has an attitude the size of a semi truck. Not accommodating at all. He's always seemed to be rather short with people, but running a business can be stressful. I asked if I could substitute Greek potatoes for the fries that came with my gyro plate, he replies " I can't be substituting stuff for fries". I offered to pay extra. I never expect something for nothing. He also is very rude to customers who have a dificult time deciding what they want. Hurries them through the line. My buddy and his young son were subject to such treatment. The food has gone down to the point of being borderline garbage. The oil that's used for frying is rancid and made even the fries taste terrible. The gyro I had was mediocre at best. The Greek potatoes were absolutely terrible. They tasted rancid. All around bad. In years past, this place had great food, while never overly friendly, the owner was slightly more pleasant to deal with. Tom, you're slacking, your mediocre food and poor attitude are a major let down to what once was a great suburban Chicago institution. You've lost an 19 year customer. Ick!! I just ate one of their burgers-it was hands down the grossest burger that's ever passed my lips. The lower bun was so soggy it was falling apart.
