Stopped by for an afternoon matcha pick me up and really liked the vibe of this place. First, it's located in the orange circle so depending on the day and time, parking can be difficult but I was lucky to find a spot right in front. When you walk in, it looks like an old bank that they converted into a cute coffee shop. There was a lot of seating areas and a lot of people come to study or meet up with their friends for a coffee. They had a simple but good menu. They had an assortment of different matcha from different regions which was cool. I don't know too much about matcha but I do appreciate the taste of matcha. When I arrived, there was a little line but the service was quick and smooth. You can watch them make your drink which was nice. The women's room has 2 stalls, usually the toilet paper is never refilled or just sitting on top of a dispenser. Play Coffee has some of the best lattes in The Circle--smooth, well-balanced, and paired with delicious pastries. We had the Volcano latte and a Cardamom latte. The service is also super friendly, which makes the experience even better. The cafe is inside an old bank building, which gives it a unique and stylish look, but the layout is a bit odd, and the acoustics make it pretty boomy. Also, the chairs are not great for long talks or hanging out. While it's right by Chapman, it didn't feel overwhelmingly full of students like another nearby spot (which has its own vibe). As someone well past my Chapman days, I appreciate that this place has a more mixed crowd. Overall, a solid choice if you're looking for great coffee in a cool setting--just maybe don't plan to get too cozy. read more

I had a chance to visit Play Coffee and had the most amazing experience ever!!!! First off, it's located in a gorgeous building that used to be a bank. It looks so grand and beautiful inside and outside. Lots of seating too! I got the iced volcano latte half sweet, I think that's what they're most known for. I believe it has brown sugar and a bit of smoked sea salt? Anyway, what really stood out to me was the sweet service from Justin, Isaac, and Leon!!! I thoroughly enjoyed the coffee here, the service and over all ambiance was so calming! Which was interesting because it was so busy there when we stopped by. The staff was all so polite and even in the midst of a rush maintained a calm demeanor and quality drinks. As a licensed coffee grader and cafe/roastery owner, I truly appreciate the selections at Play! I visit every time I'm in Orange. It's Located in the heart of the Orange Circle in the historic Wells Fargo building. I usually go for some coffee seeds for the house since they rotate different roasters, their pour-overs and espresso. My wife had a few of their lattes & enjoyed it as well. My only caveat is that unless you know what you're looking for, it sort of feels like you're on your own when making choices. What really stood out this weekend was their service. Their barista Justin who took my order helped me pick out a pour over to ease my black coffee craving. Justin was very kind, knowledgable, patient yet efficient at making conversation, all while breaking down their roasters and coffee options. I ended up going with a Gesha grown in Panama from Nomad. With bright fruit notes and a fun touch of limoncello, needless to say it was a tasty cup. Their whole team seemed very efficient yet calm, it was very fun to watch. We found it to be richer, more flavorful, and smoother than most matchas. The price was quite expensive for two drinks; $17. The ambiance is definitely beautiful unique but there is a shortage of seating. The spaces fill up fast, most with people working, so there aren't too many spots to sit and wait for your order. Play Coffee Orange is on the corner of Chapman Ave, residing in the previous Wells Fargo Bank Building in Old Town Orange. I have always loved their Fullerton location, and I was excited to see their new spot in Orange. Spoiler alert: it lived up to the hype! From the high ceilings with the original hanging light fixtures from 1969 to the vast openness, the design of this coffee shop is truly something else. For parking, there's plenty of free street parking down the many roads off the roundabout, known as the circle for obvious reasons. From the vault, I always strongly recommend playing around with Play's espresso tonics, especially if they have a natural on bar, like they did with Nomad's Natural Nicaraguan when I went. The tonic water complements and highlights the fruity notes of the espresso more than milk - it's the perfect refreshing and uplifting caffeinated iced beverage. I'll definitely get it again in my next visit whenever I'm in the area! read more

I will give it another try and try something new but so far it hasn't impressed me to really want to go back. Fancy coffee coffee shops are always hit or miss with their tea offerings, but I was very impressed with Play's matcha selection and preparation. I got the black matcha, which was a first for me. As others have observed, it was originally a bank before turning into Play Coffee. Inside is HUGE. This is a great place to study. They have high speed WiFi, small and large tables for studying alone or with a group, and a limited amount of outlets (I counted at least 8 along the wall). One thing I did notice was that the lighting wasn't great if you weren't by the windows. In terms of the noise level, it can get a noisy and there's an echo so bring noise cancelling headphones. I ordered the uji matcha latte with oat milk. The matcha is good but the matcha to milk ratio is way off. I tasted more milk than matcha in my drink. It took over an old bank, so you can still see the teller stations as well as the vault! Sheesh! Such a pretty space! We came here and ordered some real fun drinks, but honestly, everything here is good. I've gotten everything from the pour-overs to the lattes, and my guilty pleasure is the espresso tonic. It's espresso, tonic water, and often flavored with orange! A refreshing drink to enliven your day! I'm not a huge coffee fan, so I got a tea punch, and it was just as refreshing! Really similar in preparation to the espresso tonic, so you're still getting those amazing fresh flavors, but with tea instead of coffee! Our friend Kaitlyn also got a matcha drink that we all thought was super tasty too! They don't miss here. Tip 'em and sip 'em, guys. The space is in a historic bank and is perfect for hanging out or studying. I recommend checking out their pour over menu- lots of really cool options. Play coffee has been a favorite of mine at their previous location, so I was stoked that they opened up in Old Towne! Their location is in the old First National Bank and it is HUGE! There is plenty of seating and the cavernous ceilings are a vibe for sure. Their drinks are always on point - may favorite is the Volcano Latte. And their staff are always super friendly and helpful. Be aware though that you will pay for the excellent coffee and service, so don't be caught off guard by the prices. IF YOU'RE LOOKING TO DO WORK HERE: the WiFi is hella spotty, so be prepared to use your hotspot. It has worked around 5% of the times I've been here, and is a major downside. PRO-TIP: parking in the circle is hard, but Play validates parking for an hour in the lot behind the shop. read more

Went in today with my husband during the old school car show. The customer service felt nonexistent, no one greeted us, we waited by the register, no eye contact, no hello one moment, my husband attempted to make small talk with a worker, stating it was our first time there. Silence. The building itself is beautiful on the inside although it was hard to hear anything. My cold brew with light half and half and light cardamom was nice enough. My husbands filter black coffee was thick, didn't have a lot of flavor at all and was disappointing.
