COVID Precautions: The country and NYS is hunkering down for a bad couple of weeks ahead of us and it was disappointing to see the lack of caution being taken at Plaka, which is why this is a two star review. - the pepper shaker brought to the table was sticky - there was a towel fuzz (I hope) in my soup - located in a Yellow Zone, we were surprised to see the staff setting up a party. The staff and arriving party members were inside walking around not wearing masks. The food at Plaka is really good, and Authenticator Greek. I've had numerous fish dinners here, branzino, porgy, black sea bass. Since the pandemic, the fish is no longer displayed but I ask the waiters for recommendations and the fish is always fresh and well grilled. Among the dishes I order are grilled quail and the meat balls. Appetizers are good. My chicken souvlaki was dry by the time I got it home....rare take out. I prefer the pastisio over their moussaka. Ate here today to try this place out for the first time by myself on a hot Saturday afternoon while walking around the neighborhood to enjoy the nice weather. The food I had ordered, got and ate was both the gyro sandwich with onions and white sauce and a side of french fries. We've been coming to this restaurant (read second home) for quite some time but I never really wrote a review about it because, well let's be honest, I've been selfish and just want to keep it to myself. We do like to travel or try new restaurants but they set the standards for us and we judge other Greek/Mediterranean restaurants based on Plaka. Fresh grilled fish, the Greek salad, any of the Mediterranean dips and appetizers, lemon potatoes, pasta, the avgolemono soup fixes everything that's wrong with the world, wine, specials made with fresh seasonal vegetables. Everyone in there is family - I mean EVERYONE Ok, that's it, I won't say no more because I'm getting hungry again, I was just there yesterday and I'm still drooling at the thought of the stuffed pepper and tomato. So lucky we found this place. Unassuming location in shopping center. Great parking however. Sylvie was our server and she was sweet and funny and helpful and always around. We didn't want for anything. Grilled octopus was good. A bit pricey at $19 and not a huge piece. Spicy feta dip is excellent with warm pita bread. The olive oil and pita is good too. Saganaki is wonderful and salty and deliciously fried golden brown. Horiatiki salad would be perfect with less onions. Grilled shrimp was tasty. Combo platter of gyro (good and moist) and chicken souvlaki also delicious. Lemon potatoes a bit dry. But fries were really yummy. Tzatziki is just right. We had Greek red and White House wine too. It was our first visit Saturday early evening and almost didn't get a table. The entire main room was reserved for a variety of large group celebrations. But we did get a table up front after a short wait. The food was great. We ordered moussaka -hot and delicious. And chicken souvlaki platter. When ordered a large Greek we were told that the chicken came with salad so we didn't need the large Greek. Regular size would be enough. So we did and it was the perfect amount. A plate of warm pitas and vinaigrette provided upon seating. And important to note the red wine -house no brand- was great and huge. Well over 6 ounces!! We will be back!! Hummus-- yum, no issues Eggplant-- the others liked it, not my preference, prepared well though Kopanisti: Red bell pepper, jalapeño, feta spread-- don't let the red color fool you, it's not spicy! We ordered fried calamari; I've had better, wasn't seasoned. By the time my chicken souvlaki arrived I was stuffed! Good portion, comes with green salad, rice or lemon potatoes, which they ran out of. Never will I be able to try any. We had freshly grilled seabass-- delicious! But then again it's one of my favorite fishes to eat. Squeeze some lemon on top and I'm done. The gyro plate looks good! From the looks of it, the pita was either underneath the mountain of hand carved lamb/beef mix or nonexistent. It also arrived with green salad and I think rice? This is a good Greek spot in Jackson Heights. The Greek radio station playing makes it feel like I'm in Greece again. We started with the egg lemon soup which was really tasty and lemon-y. Came here with my friend for dinner since it was close to the airport. Had good reviews and a big parking lot. That's already a huge plus in my book. It was around 6:30 or so, and there was one table in the back with 4 ladies, and the rest of the place was empty. Not a good sign, but hey it's more or less the beginning of dinner service and it's a Thursday afterall. No worries. Water came pretty quickly and so did warm pita with olive oil and balsamic. The silverware and plates were a bit on the dirty side though. Ordered a large greek salad, greek sausage, grilled octopus and a chick souvlaki sandwich. The salad was okay, some of the greens should have been picked out... The sausage and sandwich were fine. The octopus is my major complaint. It was diced up octopus with a bunch of onions. Not really what I would expect for $17. I expected the normal big 2 or 3 octopus tentacles. But no, I was highly disappointed. Not only that, but the octopus itself, it had this grainy texture and well tasted absolutely bland. I was actually surprised that other reviews mention the freshness of the octopus, because this was definitely not the case for me. It was so bad we actually asked the waitress if the octopus was fresh or frozen, yes we tried to Gordan Ramsey them. The waitress said that is was fresh and walked away. Additionally the service was not that great, there were only 2 tables, and the waitress failed to refill water, failed to check in on us regarding the food. If I lived close by, I would not come here let alone actually drive here. There are obviously far better options for Greek food in the area. read more

Came to Plaka with my mom for dinner on Friday night. This was my second visit but it had been years since my first. My parents come here all the time. Let me tell you, the food was deeeeeelicious!! I would have gone back Saturday night! We started with the saganki and avelemono soup, both were so good. I had the chicken shish kebab with lemon potatoes and my mom had the branzino also with potatoes. Everything was so tasty. The onions and peppers were grilled perfectly with the chicken, the chicken was grilled to perfection, the potatoes were very tasty and seasoned well. And the tsaziki, OMG.
