Met some friends on Sunday morning. Easy parking in the lot. I really wanted to try the beignets, but they are made with eggs. I choose an everything bagel and a medium roast coffee. Prices were very reasonable. They had a vegan oatmeal cookie and a fruit & yogurt parfait that looked good. Decor was really nice and clean - lots of seating indoor and outdoor. I'm a bit of a coffee-snob; the medium roast coffee was EXCELLENT - just with half & half. Seriously, better than Starbucks. My friends ordered extra beignets to take home. PJ's was founded by Phyllis Jordan in September 1978. It was a single shop in the Carrollton neighborhood of New Orleans. It was originally called PJ's Coffee & Tea Co. PJ's expanded throughout the Greater New Orleans Area with company-owned outlets. The first franchise opened in 1989 and was successfully followed by other franchises. In 2008,  PJ''s Coffee of New Orleans was acquired by Ballard Brands. There are 163 PJs coffee stores in the USA.    My wife saw an online ad for PJ's and she located this store. Their beignets caught her eye. Beignets and coffee are a great tasting pair. We got their Praline and Cream latte, Vienna Crème coffee, and 3 beignets. The Praline and Cream latte uses PJ's Praline and Cream coffee beans. It is artificially flavored. The coffee is a medium roast with medium acidity, and medium body. It was moderately sweet with a nutty flavor and no bitterness.    The Vienna Crème was made with PJ's Viennese Blend coffee(cold brewed) and milk, sweetened and frothed together, and finished with a swirl of whipped cream. Vienna Crème coffee is a blend of dark and medium roast coffees with a toasty aroma, full body and a lingering chocolate aftertaste. Chocolate means unsweetened cocoa flavor in coffee terms. That means there is some bitterness. So, you'll need to add sugar or milk to counteract the bitterness, which is what they did in this drink. The Vienna Crème coffee was only slightly sweet with a full well-rounded flavor and no bitterness.    The beignets were soft, moist, and slightly sweet on the inside. It had a light vanilla flavor. It was coated with a lot of powdered sugar so it was pretty sweet overall. There are 3 beignets in an order.    The store and restrooms were clean. The service was helpful and professional. There was a college alumni get together on that day, so the place was packed with people. So, it took a while to get our order. It is not normally crowded. You order at the cash register. There is no order kiosk. You can order online for pick-up. They sell hot and cold teas, hot and cold coffees, frozen blended drinks, a small variety of coffee beans, single-serve K-cup, sandwiches, egg bites, bottled and canned drinks, pastries, boiled eggs, and hot chocolate. That's a good variety for a coffee shop! We thoroughly enjoyed our purchases and would recommend you give them a try. read more

Interestingly enough I'm a big fan of beignets however for a long time I had trouble finding shops in the DMV who did beignets the right way. It could be that I'm spoiled considering most of my experience with beignets has been from Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans, Louisiana, which is a completely different experience, however I have plenty of experience with some shops in the DMV who have done a decent job. I first heard of PJ's a year ago when my neighbor mentioned it during a conversation which by the way was regarding shops in the DMV who offer authentic beignets. Not being overly enthused or eager to try PJ's when my neighbor referenced it, almost a year passed and I still hadn't tried them. Boy was that a big and simple waste of a year. PJ's has a pretty good beignet. Has just the right amount of flakiness and soft texture that you'd expect from an authentic beignet. I know the term authentic is relative in this context however I think anyone who has tried these beignets will agree that any other version of it in the DMV obviously is a shortfall. Many places in the DMV serve beignets however it is very disappointing because it is obvious these restaurants know their patrons have no clue that their version of the beignet doesn't come close to authentic. This is why I can appreciate PJ's. I've visited this place at least five times this summer and my experiences have been good. I've also tried their regular coffee and Cafe Au Lait (of course). PJ's serves other items like baked good and breakfast sandwiches however like other coffee shops I think it's safe to assume this place is known for their coffee and beignets distinct from other items they offer. One thing I wish PJ's did better was use more powdered sugar on the beignets. A couple times upon returning home I had to add my own powdered sugar. Again, this might be a non-issue and just personal preference considering my prior experiences however the amount of powdered sugar certainly doesn't detract from the overall quality of the beignet. Another great find thanks to my fellow yelpers!!!! All those good reviews put me on track for the drive which was well worth it. Now the good stuff: had the small pralines and creme latte with an extra shot of espresso along with the bacon egg and cheese muffin. And May I say Yum! Yum! Absolutely delicious! I gave PJs a second chance....baby baby give me one more chance, baby baby give me one more chance (sorry, I digress). The beignets were much better on this most recent visit. They were piping hot, soft, sweet and flaky. It's a completely different recipe from Cafe de Monde in New Orleans but it was still pretty darn tasty. This coffee shop has beignets!! I got an iced vanilla latte with oatmilk, and I was really impressed with how smooth and tasty the latte was. I get my lattes less sweet and I'm glad I did because it was still sweet. The beignets were freshly made and very warm. They aren't too sweet and taste kind of like biscuits. The only improvement I would have for this cafe is to lower the AC because it was really cold. I would definitely come back if I'm ever in the area again. read more

While I am a big coffee drinker (3+ cups a day usually), I'm not what you'd call an enthusiast. By that, I mean I don't know the history of the bean, or the different complexities between beans from different regions- I like what I like and normally drink just that type. So I am not a great resource if you're looking for in-depth analysis between this establishment and Starbs or some other one that I'm largely unaware of. I like the coffee usually served in diners all over the country- for all I know they get their beans from the same distributor. I drink Organics French roast in a Keurig to give you an idea; though I will admit that drip and percolator coffee is better. Its faster and easier with a Keurig, but not necessarily better. I've been to PJ's three times now, twice over last weekend. We went last Saturday, and then on Sunday I got sent back for just the one thing. The coffee is good but that isn't what I went back for- it was for the beignets! For a little background, PJ's claims origin from New Orleans, Louisiana. If you've ever been (or if you've ever been to a New Orleans-style establishment, like PJ's) then you may have heard of them, if not had them yourself. A beignet is basically deep fried dough, usually in a square, and dusted with confectioner's sugar, which is powdery like flour. I've only had them once before and it was long ago so I couldn't tell you how similar or different that one was to the ones served here except to say that at PJ's, they are spectacular! They flake like those Pillsbury layered biscuits, but with a slightly sweet taste that the confectioner's sugar just enhances. If you eat them immediately, you get a slightly crisp crust and a soft, light, not quite gushy bite. I say gushy because it is so tender...so good! I get a triple Espresso with half and half that pairs very well with this sweet treat. Because it is more or less in my neighborhood, I'll probably frequent it at least once a week- anymore than that and I'll be looking for a weight loss plan. The place itself is a nice little spot, not too big, not too small, plenty of light and the staff are very friendly and professional. They're all observing the latest COVID protocols, including wearing masks (and requiring them for service, which I wholeheartedly agree with) having gel hand sanitizer in a pump out in the dining area for all to use and regular cleansings throughout the day. The prices are comparable to a Starbs but the place lacks that commercial feel that every Starbs offers. Little knick knacks and images evoke New Orleans, including a storyboard that I included in my first check-in (which was my 3rd visit). I hope you get a chance to check this place out! read more

A friend and I were in the area and needed to kill some time before our next move so we stopped by PJ's Coffee. I've always wanted to support PJ's because it's black owned and I've heard great things about their food. It's a fairly large coffee shop compared to the ones in DC. I ordered a mocha latte, breakfast sandwich and beignets. The breakfast sandwich was okay but the latte and the beignets were to die for!! I can definitely see PJ's being successful in DC, I really hope that they open up another location. Omg! The beignets were worth the 30 minute ride! I was definitely trying to get to this PJ's due to it just opening a few weeks ago and because I heard it was a black owned business. I saw several of my elite friends there in the last week. They proclaimed that the beignets were amazing and they were right! I arrived around 9:30 am and it was 42 degrees outside. You can't dine inside so I sat outside and waited. The wait was worth the cold! I got powdered sugar all over my clothes and I didn't care! Love this coffee shop tucked in the side of the residential development. Its really cute and the young men working there are sweet and willing to explain what is what in terms of menu and even flavors. I can say, there is a young lady there that isn't as helpful when it comes to the ordering process but not everyone has patience with customers who aren't familiar with the menu. I like that this place isn't cookie cutter even though they have multiple locations. It's nice having a coffee shop nearby to frequent instead of just Starbucks. The drinks were good and so were the beignets! Forgot to take a picture of my ham and swiss croissant, devoured it before I remembered to snap the pic . The little cubby seating tucked along the sides of the place is a nice touch as well. I look forward to patronizing this establishment more often. This place is the first thing I think about when I'm in the Bowie area! I want to come here every time I'm in Bowie. It's got a cozy, inviting atmosphere. This coffee shop is a more cozy, family style coffee shop that I believe originated in New Orleans. The first time I came here it was soon after the opening, and my boyfriend and I were personally greeted by the owner. She took the time to explain the origins of the coffee shop and got to know us! I thought it was such a thoughtful gesture for her to greet every customer there. My boyfriend got the hot chocolate, and I got the golden latte and beignets. Everything was delicious! The golden latte had hints of chai, cinnamon, cardamom, and related spices. It had such a warm, yet bold flavor. I was just a bit too sweet for me. Maybe I can ask for less sweetness. This was also seasonal drink I believe. I need a moment to explain how out of this world the beignets are!!! Please try the beignets! They make them fresh there, and they come out hot!! They're sweet, flaky, light, hot. They're SO good I can't explain them. The second time I came here I got the king cake latte and beignets (again, of course). So, I am super sad that PJs opened up during this trash time that is the Rona. Why? Because I can't go and chill there as I would like. I have legit been stalking this place. Every time I went to the gym, I noticed the sign and was delighted to see a new coffee shop coming to the neighborhood. I am one of those people that digs a new environment to work, chill out, read, to whatever, and I was soo looking forward to being able to do that here. I hit it up last week because it has gotten some awesome reviews from a community website. PJ's is located in Fairwood, parking is cool, but I foresee it being a challenge going forward once life resumes with it being so close to the gym and all. They have chairs outside too. The interior is super nice, I love the wood tables, and the colors reminiscent of NOLA. It was super welcoming. They have varying types of coffee from regular, iced, cold brew, and NITRO (yes!). Plus they have some flavors that sound like they will be delish. Plus, breffis items and their famous beignets, which are sold in three's. At the register, they have cool little trinkets like coffee lip gloss (lol super cute) to pop sockets, and key chains. They really did a nice job with all these things. The staff are super nice, and my Nitro and bennie's were ready so quickly that I was unable to take pics. No worries, I'll return, to try some food and more coffee, I'm looking forward to try the praline and creme coffee and since I'm trying not to drink my calories, I'm eager to try some of the items on the Eat Fit menu. Amazing!! Literally the best beignets I've had! And the king cake velvet ice is very good as well. I think it is a newer menu item, and it has both hot and cold options. The cold option (essentially its a shake) can be made without the protein powder. I usually do not like protein shakes, so I'm glad they were able to make one without the protein powder. The seating is plush and comfortable with available WiFi. Beignets are melt in your mouth over the top pillows that belong in heaven. Me and my wife had one order each and there was no sharing . Love this place!! It's awesome to have a coffee shop that's Black owned and ran by members of the community! The owners are PG County natives Mike and Tyra! I've been a few times and gotten the chance to meet them both. They both meet and greet customers in line and also help with the orders. Awesome people. The DRINKS we got were AMAZING! I am OBSESSED with the Velvet Ice Protein frozen drink. I get the Mocha version. It tastes like a coffee milkshake, and it's a healthier option. My friend has a sweet tooth and got the frozen lemonade with strawberry and OMG! I kept stealing sips! It tasted AMAZING! Like a liquid pink starburst! I'm not a huge fan of sweets personally but I couldn't stop sipping on it!! Definitely want to get one of my own when I'm in the mood for a treat. The environment embodies New Orleans! From the southern style decor, to second line jazz music playing, to the Zapp's chips and Muffuletta's up front, it definitely gives you a taste of New Orleans right here in MD. I will pick PJ's over that alternative any day. The best cafe au lait and beignets experience I've had since New Orleans -- dare I say, even better than what I remember. Sorry Cafe du Monde. The butter rum latte is another delicious treat. The spinach and feta croissant -- amazing. I can't wait to explore more of the menu. If only they had a muffaleta. I would be in NOLA heaven in Bowie. One other thing -- it would be helpful to see a list of syrup flavor offerings on the website to help the guide my choices before I get to the register. The staff was friendly, patient, and helpful especially given that I am not very knowledgeable about coffee drinks and wasn't sure what to order. Thanks to the young gentleman for being so welcoming. The store was clean and inviting. It looked comfy and cozy if I chose to hang around. However, I was anxious to get back home to my pj's and enjoy breakfast in bed. If you love coffee, pastries, and black people go to PJ'S in Bowie. It's across from the Gold's Gym in Fairwood. One of the owner's walked around introducing herself and after talking to her, I wanted to hug her honestly. Just to say THANK YOU for putting a blackety black coffee shop in Bowie. The last local election, I spoke to a couple of the candidates about more gathering options for older millennials outside of bars. Look at the Lord! Not only an option, but a BLACK option. This is their first week being open and today the line was literally out of the door. But they move fast, they're professional, they have PPE on and visibly available to the workers. I was quite pleased, not only with the quality of service, but with the support the surrounding community has shown, because there is a starbucks right in that safeway. When I went in there (safeway) to shop, nobody was at that counter. They were across the street at PJ'S...waiting in line. I encourage beverage drinkers, whether you like it hot, cold, blended, iced, with milk alternatives, or if you just want fresh baked pastries. Go to PJ'S. I live 10 minutes away and it took me all this time to try PJs. So this is my third visit and they never miss! Everything is consistently consistent. I am hooked on the butter rum latte. I really like this place! It's great addition to the area. I'm a SB girl at heart, but this place is def a close second. Today I tried the peppermint bark latte. Pretty tasty, not sure if I really got the flavor of peppermint (to me closer to raspberry), but nonetheless it was still really good. I love that I could enjoy my beverage after a few minutes. I've been some places where temperature of the drink is a million degrees and takes forever to cool. The only criticism, would be the music is exceptionally loud (hence the four star rating). Loud to the point that I found myself having to yell and constantly ask the barista to repeat herself. Maybe the volume is meant to mimic a party atmosphere? I truly enjoy my visits to PJs. The staff of Dani, Emoni, Mikayla, Shannon, Tiara, and Arthur always greet me with an engaging smile and fun conversation. I came back for the same reason this year, but had to try their menu. Over 2 visits we've tried: - pralines and cream latte - 5 stars. Delicious, and not too sweet - mango smoothie - 5 stars. - chocolate chip muffin - 5 stars - chocolate chunk cookie - 5 stars - beignets - all the stars there ever have been - chai velvet ice - 3 stars; the ice diluted the bold, spicy flavor I expect from chai I will be back; I love to support smaller businesses, and the staff were generally friendly here. I suspect the less stellar experience may have been due to new staff so maybe they'll get the hang of it soon. But the atmosphere is definitely something I'd enjoy if I had more time to just hang out inside. read more
