From the moment we walked in the door, the man (I think he's the manager) was friendly and welcoming. Next was our awesome waitress, I think her name was Sarah, but don't quote me on that. She was efficient, nice, and knowledgeable. Someone clone this woman! I told her that I think she'd make an awesome trainer for any wait staff. They could learn from her, especially with all the restaurants I've been to. We decided to get the "Ray J" which had different kinds of pepperoni, the cup kind and the thin kind with burrata, basil, honey, reggiano and mozzarella cheese, and we added mushrooms on their Sicilian crust. Their crust is like a fluffy crunchy crust. It was good, and apparently, it's what this restaurant specializes in. I've had such horrible/mediocre pizza lately (see my other Yelp reviews), so I was thrilled to break that losing streak by eating winning pizza. Here's my pro tip for you: Buy the appetizer Brussel sprouts and add them to your pizza, or eat them separately because the crispy guanicale and awesome Brussel sprouts were outstanding! The guanicale was 10 stars amazing and addictive. I can honestly say that I've never had such great guanicale before. Combine that with the pizza, and it's a dynamic duo like Batman and Robin or Peanut Butter and Jelly! The man who I think is the manager even walked us out and opened the door to wish us well since it was raining. A seriously nice touch and a seriously amazing manager. Wonderful Pizza! We saw them on Check Please Bay Area and decided to drive right over. We tried three pizzas in various styles (New York, Thin and Crispy, Grandma) and all were chock full of fresh ingredients on fabulous dough. The Ray J with tomato sauce, mozzarella, thin pepperoni, thick pepperoni, basil, burrata, garlic fermented honey, parmigiano reggiano), was the best pizza we've ever had (yes, a big statement). The food is so clean and fresh we didn't feel over fed but rather completely satiated. We also had arugula salad which was lemon, oil, and freshly grated parmesan done just right. The only hiccup was seating. We were there on a Saturday at 5pm. The lower part of the restaurant had many open tables but they said they only had outdoor seating. There are heaters and we were fine. However, in 1.5 hours all the tables we saw open remained open with a few new tables seated but not many. Perhaps it was a server coverage thing? This is a wonderful restaurant that deserves accolades and success. We will go back many times! read more

I love a good thin crust so we got it NY style. holy moly that pizza crust was almost life changing. it's light and airy and upon biting down on it, the crust flattened and became so easy to devour. usually I'm pretty picky and won't eat my crust but I left no crumbs that night. the pizza was so cheesy, wish I had gotten a photo of the insane cheese pull but I couldn't wait-had to stuff my face with it as soon as I witnessed it. the flavor profiles from the salty pepperoni and sweet honey complemented so well together. wished there was a bit more basil. I would say eat it quick because we did notice the middle became a little soggy from all the cheese and sauces after a couple minutes. it was a pretty heavy, oily slice so we couldn't eat too much of it, but regardless it was such a delectable experience. I also want to shoutout the staff working for taking care of us so well and being so friendly. we came a couple minutes before last call and they were still more than happy to take us. we also took our time eating not realizing that we were there so late and ended up being the last customers while they were cleaning up but they were extremely kind and patient, didn't give us any attitude or take offense to it. they even had a conversation with us on our way out. nice interior, well lit, and great modern clean design. the vibes were so good. there was a good amount of people on a Friday night with chatter but not too loud. it was a really chill, peaceful dinner experience. would be great for a date night. I would def recommend this spot and can't wait to go back to try their other pastas and pizzas from their large menu options. My first 5 star review in a bit, and I'm glad to give it. This is honestly some of the best pizza I've had in a while. And honestly I'm a pizza fiend at heart. Laura is an award winning (in Italy & Us) Pizza maker, who got her start over at Tony's in little Italy. The food here is amazing, the pizzas are delish, the apps and drinks are on point. Laura is right there in the mix, making drinks and checking quality, as any good chef owner should. this place is fire, and honestly it blew us away. I had a Detroit style, and she had grandma's. Came off the recommendation of friends and we were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food here. You got your choice of classic NY Style, Detroit, Grandma but really the only one anyone should ever get is the New York. Not because this place can't deliver but I mean it's pizza and I'm biased being from the east coast. Nevertheless, we ordered the Ray J. We were torn between this and the award winning La Regina but not disappointed with our selection. The dough was cooked nicely with a good portion of dough to toppings and the texture was lightly crispy which was appreciated. The sauce is very flavorful and you'll get your fill with a 12 inch if only two are sharing it. If you got a third wheel size up and get the 18 inch. Centered right in the middle of downtown Berkeley it is best to walk to this prime location centered between the Shattuck Split. Parking may be tough so commute in or enjoy while day drinking in the area. The service was good and helpful. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and given our choice of place to sit, sit by the window to get a great view of downtown bustling Berkeley. Ever since their opening, Pizzeria da Laura had been under my radar as they're one of only a handful of restaurants that do Detroit style pizza. Originally, my party opted for the famed vegan sushi restaurant, Tane, but headed here shortly after discovering the wait time would be over an hour. Meanwhile, we were seated almost immediately at the pizzeria's bar. Our pleasant bartender / waiter tended to us, serving waters and taking our orders. We placed an order for the Ray J Sicilian-style which came with dollops of burrata, a honey drizzle, pepperoni cups, and basil. Having one basil per slice seems like sacrilege to me as only one mouthful will have the pleasure of savoring Basil's piquant flavor. The marriage of toppings (when experienced altogether) was delicious. I wished the pepperoni was more crispy, but it's a fairly small complaint given how good the pizza was otherwise. Had been a few months since my first visit and this time we came back for success with empty bellies. The last time we came and our waitress Sara had us super excited only for us to find out that the last Sicilian style pizza had been sold. Their famed La Regina Sicilian style is their prize winning pizza and low and behold when she had us again we told her and she said this pizza was not going to be lost. We had 40 minute traffic and we were not going to be denied! Lol. We also ordered the Ray J New York Style for my daughter although Sara and our table agree we prefer the Detroit style, but when your college kid is home for the holidays, you get her what she wants along with the Carneros Pinot and start the holiday season. It was a great night and I wish we could have Sara every time we go. Oh and while La Regina was good Detroit style last time we all agreed that on a Sicilian crust that it was well worth the effort. Extra Notes: they have started taking reservations now on Resy but if you are particular about crusts then we recommend getting there on the earlier side. We arrived at 5:30 and were first in line. We turned around two minutes later and there were 6 other groups and we were told that since we didn't have a reservation we were sitting at a table they needed by 7:15. This place is new on the scene in the downtown Berkeley area. They have a nice dining room upon entrance off of Shattuck, and then additional seating upstairs - which is where we sat. There was a very friendly host that welcomed me and our waitress was great, from the moment we arrived and through the meal. The menu is simple, but the options were delicious. We had to ask our waitress the difference between a Sicilian and a Detroit pizza, but were able to figure out the New York and Grandma. The Sicilian is made on foccacca bread, whereas the Detroit is a thick slice with wall of melted cheese. Yum! We ordered a cheese New York and a Wild Mushroom Detroit that were out of this world. The New York had all the right flavors with chewy pizza dough, but the Detroit was so fun to eat! It had this crust made of melted cheese that is something you only dream about! It had fresh green arugula on the top, tender wild mushroom under a cheese top, and perfectly crunchy crust. We opted out of having a salad, but they did have some notable greens to choose from like roasted Brussel Sprouts, and arugula salad - which looked tempting for the next visit. I've had a year of eating more pizza than usual and just when I thought I had already eaten the best pizza in America in NYC, I tried the Ray J in Detroit style and now I'm questioning everything. As a thin crust lover, I was first skeptical of Detroit style but immediately fell in love with it because of the crispiness and fluffiness of the dough. We didn't have to fight for the corner pieces because everything was crispy and each side/corner came with a bite of sharp crispy cheese!! I also loved everything about the Ray J topping combo, especially the honey drizzled on the burrata. Overall, my only note is that the place should be dimly lit! The pizzeria is a nice place with amazing and could be a more romantic atmosphere with dimmer yellow lights rather than the bright white. I had been wanting to try Pizzeria da Laura since they opened and figured that National Pepperoni Pizza Day would be a great opportunity. We arrived a little after 7 and saw a sign that said "Please wait to be seated". There was one person ahead of us and this is where things got weird. No less than 5 workers made eye contact with us while we stood there, some as close as a few feet away without acknowleding us. No "Have you been helped yet?", "Someone should be right with you", nothing. I decided maybe that was a sign to just seat myself which I took. The host finally showed up after some time and gave us menus and water. Luckily everything was uphill from here. We started off with the Caesar salad which wasn't very flavorful, but luckily just seemed to be under salted. After adding some salt it tasted like a classic Caesar that everyone expects. The portions were large enough to share with a group which was nice and we had a bit leftover as the pizza arrived. We ordered a detroit style pizza that was some variation of a pepperoni at the recommendation of our server and it did not disappoint. The crust was nice and airy, the sauce was flavorful, the pepperonis were perfectly cupped and the fresh basil and honey really made it pop. For drinks I just had water, but my fiancé ordered a gin and maraschino cocktail that was perfectly balanced and tasty. All in all it was a pleasurable experience. Our server was very on top of quality checks and was extemely friendly and helpful when we had questions. The Ray J includes honey which tastes good, but I personally felt the sweetness gets old quickly if that's the only pizza I'm eating. Next time I want to try a different signature. There was plenty of seating as they have an outdoor patio and 2nd floor. Finding out a female alum from Tony's Pizzeria opened a new restaurant in Berkeley, I knew it would take no convincing to bring my family through! Located on Shattuck Avenue, Pizza da Laura is everything you want it to be and more. Vibrant interior, friendly staff, wallet friendly prices, upbeat vibe and most importantly, a carefully curated menu filled with thoughtful appetizers, salads, pasta and of course the main highlight of the evening, the pizza! Choosing the Arancini to start (cheesy fried saffron risotto filled with "Dads Ragu", served with tomato sauce), the Caesar (romaine, parmigiano reggiano, garlic focaccia croutons, Caesar dressing) and as our main a picturesque Sicilian pie, we were more than satisfied. Our waiter looked bored and was not focused on service. The caesar salad was very lemony and had very little caesar flavour. Most disappointing was the oily Toots pizza. Very little taste, undercooked zucchini, and way too much oil. The Peperoncino pasta was super dry with no flavour other than the abundance of pepper flakes that made it too hot to enjoy. Really good pizza that's open past nine on a Friday evening. I love that they have four different styles of pizza to choose from: New York style, Sicilian style, Detroit style, and Grandma style. The grandma style is a square pizza with a thin crispy crust that I am definitely a fan of! We ordered a Marge New York style pizza and Chi Town grandma style pizza. The Marge was topped with fresh basil, flavorful tomato sauce, and had a soft fluffy thin crust. The Chi Town was also tomato based and topped with in-house made peppers, sausage, and garlic. As mentioned before, the crust is much crispier in comparison to the New York style but with a thinner crust than Detroit style. I think the best part of the pizza was that they didn't overdo it on the salt. Often times with pizza in America, I often times end up having to chug a bunch of fluids afterwards to compensate all the salt intake. Not the case here! Service was hospitable, friendly, and chill. Good vibes all around. Staff had no problem showing us where the restrooms were (one floor down in the basement with key card access). The restaurant is conveniently located in downtown Berkeley and is right next to the BART station. Definitely recommend checking this place out. I don't know of many places that offer multiple styles of pizza and you can pretty much customize to your liking. Something else to be aware of is that they have the option of serving by the slice during lunch time, but only whole pizzas during dinner hour. When we got to the restaurant, we were asked to wait for a bit, so they could prepare the tables upstairs for our soon-to-be group of 7 as the first floor was relatively full already. We were seated pretty soon after and our waiter poured our waters and gave us more time for the other members of our group to arrive. Of the pizzas that they serve, you can also choose to get that pizza in a certain style (New York, Sicilian, Detroit, and Grandma). The Sicilian is unique in that there are only 25 made per day, so make sure to ask if they are still serving them at the time of your order. I like that their menu also indicates how much each pizza style can serve. When everyone was there and ready, we ordered three pizzas: 2 NY Style (12" and 18") and 1 Sicilian. The one I got to try was the Ray J which we got as the Sicilian. What intrigued me about the Ray J was their fermented honey and despite the amazing pizza flavors, I think that the honey was the star of this show. When you bite into the crust, you really get that hint of sweetness that is delicious after the savory pizza you get leading up to the crust. I do wish the honey was a bit more prominent, but I do understand how sweet it could make the pizza as a result. For our group of 7 and an estimated serving of 9-12 people based on the ranges they give on the menu (and based on the three pizzas we ordered), we only left taking back about 4 slices.
