This place is no good, Gyro was cold and bread was hard, the Greek salad had 1 Greek olive in both my boyfriends and mine salad, ravioli al frono didn't have much meat in the ravioli disappointing. The small cheese pizza we ordered wasn't good either the cheese kept falling off and the crust tasted like cardboard and $3.00 a 12 Oz can of soda x 3 and no refills are you insane.. I spent $80 on straight garbage i don't recommend coming here. read more

Pizza Olympia - I had the new York steak and spaghetti! Never again! I should've known better going in there and not one customer - Pizza Near Me - Anchorage, Alaska

This was the first time I've ever been here, I'm mad at myself actually because prior to going, i already knew that i wanted moussaka, cos i love it, and then when confronted with the menu, i order Chicken Parmesan, then mentally kick myself, as i had vowed to get the moussaka. We were greeted warmly, and it seemed empty when we got there (early, around 5) but i cannot be allowed to reach the Hangry stage, because things get ugly. We were taken to a booth, and our server brought waters. Actually pretty small glasses of water, and in fact these are the smallest glasses of water i've seen in a restaurant. As this was my choice of beverage, i was limiting myself, because no carafe or pitcher of water for refills was brought to the table. Nor did the server refill the glass. I don't like that. We ordered - Chicken Parmesan for me, and Chicken Oregano for him. Like i say, i was kicking myself that i forgot about the moussaka. Sometimes, i love that restaurants are quite fusion with their food choices, and other times, i think it can muddle the flavours. We both opted for the soup that was an option, a chicken, lemon and rice Mediterranean soup. A cup of soup was brought out, spoons, and a basket of delicious looking herbed garlic bread. As we'd arrived early, there was no silverware or napkins on the tables yet, so i had to request napkins. I've mentioned before that i really hate cold, or lukewarm food, well this soup was boiling hot, too hot to eat without blowing on it, so we dipped the delicious herby garlic bread, and then ate it whilst blowing on the spoon. It tasted really good and creamy, i liked it a lot, and i prefer too hot than too cold. For our entree, we both believed the marinara sauce tasted of clove, which is not something I'd have expected. Maybe I'm wrong, and I'm mixing clove up with something else. Possibly fresh basil? Anyway, the spaghetti on my dish was perfectly Al dente, the chicken Parmesan lovely and cheesy, however the chicken was a tad on the drier side. Not massively so, it wasn't inedible, but i didn't eat it all. His potatoes were like an English "chip" (what Americans call french fries) and i had some of those, i felt they were a little wet, as they'd been sitting in the marinara sauce, but still, it didn't stop me eating them. Neither of us finished our meal, nor did we take home leftovers, of which there were plenty. Maybe i just had higher expectations, as this has 4 and a half stars, and i did see loyal customers coming in and being treated very warmly, almost like family, and asking for their usual table. I haven't been here in a long long time, but it used to be my favorite place to go as a child. It was a special place for us and strictly for celebrations. Coming in late to Anchorage from Whittier I saw they were still open so we went to have dinner here. Prices definitely have gone up, but only after being seated and given drinks were we told of a $2+ up charge per item. It was already quite expensive in my opinion so it was kind of disappointing to me. However, we did decide to stay. The decor is still as it was when they opened. It's tired. It's dated. It's dingy and dirty. Our cushions were cracked on both benches and lacked substance. I felt the waitress was gruff at first, but I ignored my feelings. I decided I would let my partner have a meal and i would have a dinner salad as I wasn't that hungry and he was. His chicken Parmesan although pretty good looking visually, he was very disappointed. The chicken was a chicken patty that was breaded. You could see the uniformity of the processed chicken. While it may be a higher quality patty it's basically a reheated nugget, it's not what was expected at all. Especially for $25. We expected an actual chicken breast. To me the sauce smelled very sweet when it arrived to the table, but I didn't taste it. My partner did say it was sweet. His Greek salad came with one Greek olive. It was a good, fresh salad...just a far cry from Greek. Soda was canned for those who enjoy the fountain variety. Upon completion we were prepared with our card when she brought the check. My partner handed over his card and the waitress flipped and slapped the bill over. My partner acknowledged his card again and said "all on the card please" and she told him she flipped it that way to see the total. Hmm... $40 (not including tip) for: 1 Chicken Parmesan w/ Greek side Salad 1 Dinner Salad w/ Italian 1 Sprite Complimentary bread Really I would do 1/5, but the food was edible. I went out for dinner here tonight with my husband and in-laws for the first time. The food was amazing I'm not even kidding they have they BEST GYRO I've had in my entire life! It's like a gyro sandwich it was amazing! My husband got the Italian calzone and he said it was the best calzone he's ever had! Our in-laws took us here because they also think they have the best gyro! I didn't take any photos because I was with company but if you are a gyro lover you MUST TRY THIS PLACE! plus it is locally owned by a couple. Been ages since I had been here - took my grandparents out since it had been a long time, and we all loved it still! The gyro is the best I have ever had! Totally recommend. Side salad with house dressing hit the spot. Also added a soup of the avgolemono soup, which was just as good as when I used to eat it 20+years ago. Lasagna was cheesy, and my grandpa enjoyed which I was surprised since it had a nutmeg? or cinnamon? flavor. Got a half/half pizza: Mama Mia & Athena's Delight. Would get thin crust next time and the anchovies on the side of the Mama Mia - it was overpowering. Not a fast dining experience - believe we were there for a little over an hour and a half, but that's why you go out, right? To get out of the house and enjoy the company. I came here for my lunch break the other day since it has been two years from my last visit and was craving some Greek food. Pizza Olympia is a longtime Spenard institution that is located between Northern Lights and Benson across from the former REI location and next door to the Buckaroo Club. When I arrived, I was warmly greeted by one of the owners who quickly seated me at a booth. After going through the menu for a couple of minutes, I decided to settle on the Moussaka (fried eggplant, potatoes, seasoned ground beef, zucchini topped with Besamel sauce and plenty of melted cheese). This has been a customer favorite for many years and I still remember the family owners advertising this dish from their old commercials back in the 1980's. I was given a basket of complimentary garlic bread to munch on while waiting. The wait was a little longer than I would have liked especially with the limited time I had on my break. My order arrived about 20 minutes before my lunch break was scheduled to end. I made the best out of the situation and tried to finish it as best I could. The Moussaka was delicious with plenty of melted cheese and ground beef to complement the eggplant and the zucchini blended with the Besamel sauce. What happened next was the reason I decided to go with four stars for this updated review, the owner noticed how long I was waiting and she surprised me with a free loaf of seasoned Greek bread. She explained her husband made these loaves every year during the holidays. This was such a nice gesture on her part and one that would ensure me to come back here for a dinner with family and friends in the near future. This kind of warmth and sincerity from the owners is why Pizza Olympia has been going strong for such a long time as many businesses have come and gone through the years in the surrounding area. read more

It's been a while since I've been here. I know the owner Athena through her daughter Zoe. We went to high school together. Athena is just fantastic. So it's been a few years, but I was remembering the thin-ish crust and sauce on the pizzas and I was like yes, please. I ordered a pepperoni pizza and a lamb gyro. Delivery was fast and food hot. Dove into the pizza. I liked the sauce, cheese, and pepperoni. Crust? Not so much. It was thick, overly floured on the bottom, and didn't taste homemade. Recipe change? Gyro was very tasty and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Quite large. Thinly sliced lamb, tomato, tzatziki, and onion. This breading I liked. I think this is more of a 3* experience since I didn't get to see Athena, but it's 4 for overall memories and taste. Hopefully the crust is better next time. I appreciate any restaurant that has clear directions for how to pick up orders during this time. Every place is different so I appreciate when places are clear with what they expect. My food was ready in about 30 minutes. While I was waiting to pay, I got to chatting with another customer- his family has been eating here for something like 20 years. Don't need a better testimonial than that! My chicken parmesan was really tasty! The red sauce is seasoned slightly different than what I'd expect, but it was really good. The pasta was slightly overcooked, but I'll overlook that given how good everything else was. The lady who took my payment was beyond friendly! Pizza is my favorite Italian/Greek place in Anchorage and is my family's favorite traditional pizza shop in Anchorage. The restaurant is a small, family run business and the pasta and other recipes have been brought over to Alaska with the family. The restaurant has won several awards and rightfully so. Everything is made from scratch. The sauces are amazing, pastas are made fresh and are not sitting there all dried up. If you know your pasta (I.e. have travelled through Italy) this is your place to get true Italian food. Greek is on point as well. The pizza is also delicious. If you want a thicker crust and full of a traditional flavor, this is the place. Everything handmade. Most evenings the mother or grandma is there and will sit and talk with you. She used to cook, but she is now in her 80s. Ask her questions! Sometimes you will here this joyous family enjoying their own family meal. This is how you know this food is what you should be eating. Still deciding to go? It's 5 stars. The parking lot is tricky, don't let the location fool you. Go. You won't regret it. It's the best. read more

I had the moussaka and my cousin had the steak. Both were delicious, the steak especially with what I think was a nice wine marinade and lots of garlic gloves tucked into the steak in various places. Very very tasty. This was the first time I've had moussaka so I'm not going to criticize it much, since maybe I'm just not that much of a moussaka fan in general. From the description, I was expecting lots of egg plant but I found almost none that I could detect. However, there were lots of potatoes and plenty of cheese and beef. The cheese and special sauce were super tasty. Very delicious and filling. So, I don't know, does moussaka usually have lots of eggplant? If so, then they were running low. If not, then maybe it was perfect. It seems quite popular. The service was outstanding and extremely friendly. Our waitress was helpful and appropriately talkative. The Greek Salad is excellent & made for two - so far the best salad that I have had in Anchorage. We also split a Gyro which was presented calzone style rather than in pita bread. I must say it was quite good and not as messy as the traditional style. They also brought out garlic bread that was crispy-not soggy and very tasty! At the conclusion of our meal, they gave us their traditional "Christmas Bread." They make over 3000 loaves of their bread and give it to their customers from Thanksgiving through New Years. It was a very nice touch. I am very surprised that this place wasn't packed during lunch, but I believe it's because people think that this is just a pizza joint. I'm coming back soon and will review the pizza as I saw two awards for "Best Pizza" in Anchorage. read more

It's been years since I've been here (we left state), but I found myself remembering the amazing owners (and great food of course). I came in for the first time for a to-go order and as I waited in a booth for the order, I think it was the owner who approached me and told me her mother (or maybe mother-in-law) wanted to talk to me in the back by the kitchen. I was a little surprised and made my way back there. The elderly lady stood up from her chair in the corner, gave me a hug, took my face in her hands, and told me to come back and see her. Meh. There was only one other couple eating there when we first walked in, which should have been a sign. The restaurant was very dated. The entry way smelled like an old library- musty and dusty. The booth benches were in serious need of cleaning and reupholstering. Yuck. Server was nice though. Overall the food tasted ok but not worth what they charged. $25 for baby shrimp pasta. $18 for a veggie gyro that was served on grilled French bread or something rather than in a pita pocket like I was expecting. I didn't complain because it tasted good, just odd. It was like a mushroom and onion panini with tzatziki sauce. Lastly, the dessert- $8 for their "chocolate mouse cake," which was literally a slice of Costco's tuxedo cake. You ain't fooling' me. Went here the other night and probably received some of the best service we've ever gotten in any restaurant. It turns out, the lady taking care of our table was one of the owners, lol. I met my husband in a restaurant very similar to this one so our decision to try this place was met with equal enthusiasm. We probably got there about two hours before closing, and the place was decently busy, but not packed or claustrophobic in any way. Originally, we had planned to get our food as take out but the lady (Georgia is her name) was so sweet to us when we got there we decided to eat in! My husband is always interested in finding good pizza, and since we moved up here, he had yet to really try any of the pizza places in town. This place was a great first choice! Ratings: MamaMia Pizza: The name says it all. He SCARFED it! Told me it was one of the best pizzas he's had on the west coast....10/10. Athena Pizza: I got this without the feta and gotta admit it was pretty damn good considering I am not a pizza person by any means. Toppings and crust all tasted very fresh! 9/10. The Calmata olives made it really pop. Greek Spaghetti: Perhaps the most garlicky spaghetti I've ever tasted. It had a very interesting combination of flavors mostly dominated by garlic and cinnamon: 8/10. It was vey good, but not something I can eat very often. Garlic Bread: Outstanding. Some of the best garlic bread I've had in any restaurant...ever. They served it with an olive oil/tzatziki mix I've never seen before. Excellent flavor combinations once again. 10/10 Ambience: Nice. The lady who took care of us was extremely helpful and accommodating in her efforts to find us a table we'd really enjoy. She did exactly that! 10/10. Ordered my pizza at 4:30 pm today and was told it would be delivered in an hour. Called Pizza Olympia again at 6 pm to let them know I still had not received my pizza. The lady who answered said "it's already been shipped and I should receive it shortly. No sorry or thank you (We already have your money so good luck with that attitude). I finnaly received the pizza at 6:15 pm and it was stone cold and tasted like it was made this morning (not fresh at all). Extremely disappointing. read more
