Stopped by Pine State Biscuits and ordered the Moneyball, which is biscuits and gravy topped with an over easy egg. It definitely delivered. The biscuit was fluffy with just the right amount of crumble, and the gravy was rich and savory without feeling too heavy. Once you break the egg and let the yolk mix into everything, it really brings the whole dish together. My date ordered the chicken fried steak plate and was very happy with it. The steak was crispy on the outside, tender inside, and the portion size was generous. It is an order at the counter and then find a seat setup, which keeps things casual and efficient. The staff was friendly and welcoming, even though it seems like it can get really busy during peak times. The ambiance feels laid back and comfortable, classic Portland brunch vibes. Prices felt fair for the quality and portion sizes. I gave it 4 stars and would definitely go back.

I usually order the Biscuit with Shitake Mushroom Gravy (5 stars). It is the best mushroom gravy I've ever had. The delicious biscuit does not get entirely lost under the thick blanket of gravy. The golden crust created a barrier that maintained the fluffy interior. I also liked The Reggie (4 stars) biscuit sandwich that included good fried chicken, gravy, cheese, and bacon. I liked how crispy the Hash Browns (3 stars) were, but it was very greasy. My husband likes the BBQ Biscuit. My son either gets the Biscuit (5 stars) or the Blueberry Cornmeal Pancake (4 stars). The S'mores Pop Tart (4 stars) was a sweet contrast to my savory brunch dish. I also liked the strong Mocha Cold Brew (4 stars) with oat milk. The service has been consistently 4 stars. They're friendly when you order and when they bring your order. The wait for the food isn't too long. My family and I enjoy our meal every time.

Pine State is an awesome breakfast (or lunch) spot)! We swung in around 11:00am and there was plenty of seating. The team member at the register was super friendly and helpful. We ordered and I got a cup for coffee. There were two coffee choices, I went with one that had a hint of chocolate flavor. It was perfect. Our food hit the table way faster than expected. The Reggie Deluxe was way bigger than I was expecting. The biscuit was nice and dense, perfect for a sandwich. The piece of chicken was massive and the egg was cooked beautifully. The flavors were balanced well! The beignets were next level. They were firmer than I've had before, which worked perfectly in the caramel sauce. I'm pretty sure the awesome flavor triggered some core memories of pull apart biscuits I had as a kid. Great food, great service!

I remember enjoying Pine State Biscuits on my first trip to Portland so I asked my friends to go here for my most recent trip. We were all worried the food would be too heavy so we went in with low expectations, and we were all pleasantly surprised. It wasn't too heavy at all! Got the Reggie Deluxe and also tried my friend's hash browns that were the perfect texture and seasoned perfectly. The Reggie Deluxe was delicious. I wish I got extra gravy, I ran out right at the end but overall the ratio was decent. You order first then sit. No seats available inside on the cold fall Sunday we went so we huddled outside in the heater, but the staff helped us put together a table inside and grabbed us once the table was ready. Thanks team!

5/5! Fresh biscuits for sandwiches. For veggie reggie I was skeptical about veggie sausage and veggie bacon but it was quite tasty. Mushroom gravy was bomb; it gave me a thanksgiving feel. Hash up with eggs was my favorite! Would definitely order this again. Hash browns were crispy. Veggies flavorful. Egg cooked perfectly (over hard). Ketchup on it was a game changer. Blueberry cornmeal pancake was nice and sweet to finish off my meal. Appreciate the real maple syrup. Fried green tomatoes paired very nicely with the cheese dipping sauce.

The worker was great! She was very friendly. 3 stars for the food. We ordered the Reggie Deluxe to share as our little breakfast snackie. A fried chicken with shitake mushroom gravy and a fried egg on top. The biscuit and fried chicken was dry inside. We were disappointed. The gravy tasted good and made it a lot better for the driness but meh. The portion os big, so we were glad we shared one. The space for dining was enjoyable.

Super cozy and homey family vibe!! Biscuits made from scratch is the best here! All the options of dishes are pretty original and very tasty. The portions are just enough to feel satisfied and full. Beer, wine, and other drinks are included in the menu as well as coffee and the like. All of the staff had smiles and warmth on their faces. Wish there was a spot like this in California. Highly recommend you to stop in while if you're in Portland.

I love biscuits & gravy so this spot was amazing! True comfort food. It was so good we came back twice during our trip to Portland! My favorite dish is definitely the biscuits & gravy, you can choose between sausage or mushroom gravy. Both were delicious & creamy. I will definitely be back when I'm in Portland!

Pine State is a great place for breakfast. The biscuit was light and fluffy, the chicken was fried nicely and the meat gravy had a great flavor. The staff was very friendly and fast working.

This place was amazing! Again, a line lol. I split a reggie deluxe. Amazing. Reminded me of high school so they win the nostalgia points. I also got an iced latte which was very tasty too. A really good spot and well worth trying.

The food was phenomenal! My daughter loved her biscuit. She got to build her own ham and cheese and with a picky eater I was nervous at first. However the first bite made it clear that this was going to be a good experience. I got the Chatfield with the apple butter on the side and devoured it. My daughter also enjoyed my biscuit. Did they got the fried mac and cheese which was delicious. Then I can cheese was flavorful and stayed crispy throughout our meal. We also got the caramel bourbon roll which was incredibly sweet but worth it. So warm and gooey. The service was also a plus! Everyone was really nice and the atmosphere felt very warm and inviting. We're from out of town but I would 100% come back to experience this brunch again.

THE REGGIE (Fried chicken, bacon, Tillamook cheddar. Topped with sausage gravy)

A solid spot for a day when I want to do nothing more than clog my arteries and love every minute of it. Of course, we couldn't start our morning in a food coma, so the 5 of us shared two dishes: THE REGGIE (Fried chicken, bacon, and Tillamook cheddar. Topped with choice of gravy): Dry fried chicken. Yummy, hearty sausage gravy. BRISKET BISCUIT (Smoked brisket topped with caramelized onions): Tender & juicy meat! & the biscuits? Fluffy inside, crispy outside. Not quite flakey or buttery, but definitely comforting in the chilly weather. It's mostly self-service: Find a seat. Fetch your own water/coffee, utensils, ketchup or hot sauce. And finally clean up after yourselves. Wish I tried their mushroom gravy!

Pine State Biscuits is probably the most iconic Portland institution. I don't always stop by when I visit Portland, but when I do, it's always such a nice treat. I always order an old favorite and try a lil something new. I love the Moneyball Double Down ($14) with a side of bacon ($6.00). It's a biscuit and gravy topped with 2 over easy eggs. It's simple, but you can really taste the buttery biscuit without being weighed down by other things. The biscuit is smothered in a creamy, decadent sausage gravy and topped with the perfect over easy egg (s). It's a solid choice if you don't want to commit to a sandwich. On this visit, I also tried the Wedgie ($14) which is a really fun take on a wedge salad except in sandwich form. The Wedgie has a generous piece of juicy fried chicken, a fried green tomato, and organic iceberg wedge topped with your choice of blue cheese or ranch sandwiched between a biscuit. Ngl, you're gonna have to knife and fork this bad boy, but it's well worth the extra effort. The iceberg wedge added a nice refreshing snap to each bite and with the dressing helped cut all the fried stuff. Unexpectedly so good. PSA: Don't sleep on their baked goods. It's never not s good idea to visit Pine State.

Immaculate atmosphere and the exact sort of thing we were looking for for breakfast. We didn't get her name but saw on the receipt her name might have been Davi, she was such a bundle of light and life, so attentive and kind! She immediately gave us wonderful recommendations which we all adored. The table ordered praline bacon to share (do yourself a favor and get this), one ordered the praline bacon waffle, another ordered the bananas foster waffle, and I got the seasonal vegetable hash. We were all in HEAVEN with what we ordered. From the first bite to the last it we were all absolutely stunned by how delicious and well made everything was. I savored every bite as did my compatriots. One gal ordered a couple things to go for her family (huevos rancheros for the hubby and cinnamon rolls for her kiddos) and our waitress Davi recommended they bring out the cinnamon rolls unfired so that she could pop them in the oven when she got home after a short drive. It was such good attention to detail that felt like such a friendly offer. Absolute superstars, the lot of you. Next time I'm back in Portland I'm absolutely spoiling some friends here with what I can only describe as a transcendent experience.

He told me that they would clean off a table for me. WOO HOO. I bursted out crying at the thought that I finally got my seat. As I sat down a soft chair graced my bottom. Beautiful. However, now that I've been a few times, I notice little details like "why do the hostesses continue to seat people right next to each other?". There are plenty of other open tables that people could be seated at, but it really eliminated our ability to have a connecting conversation, as it felt like we were a party of 6 with us 2 in the middle!!! And 2 of the people clearly had some personal "issues" going on and were very disruptive. The space is small, but the visual displays of all the artwork make it a talking point conversation. The main artist was on hand & we found ourselves with the opportunity to talk with him while we waited on our food (which took a lot longer than expected). Funny, we ordered 1st & ours came out 10 mins later after everyone else. I decided to go with the Chicken and Waffles, and we also had the shrimp and grits. The food hit on all cylinders, and the only thing that was needed next was to make a move for a cocktail and a little walking in downtown to change it up. Will definitely return, but I will be more direct and vocal about seating that's for sure.

Watch in-depth video breakdown here…read morehttps://youtu.be/2LsMS2vxzRU?is=U5MfItnpo97tUvuq Dirty Lettuce had me questioning whether I was really in Portland or somehow got transported back down South. I'll admit, I came into this place with a slight bias. I'm from the South, and maybe it's ignorant, but when I hear "soul food," I automatically think of the South. I grew up around soul food. I know what good collard greens taste like. I know what good mac & cheese tastes like. So when I heard people on TikTok raving about a vegan soul food restaurant in Portland, Oregon, part of me was thinking: "Soul food? In Portland? How good could it really be?" Well... Dirty Lettuce shut me up pretty quickly. I originally found this place while searching TikTok for vegan restaurants in Portland. Dirty Lettuce kept coming up, and people especially hyped up the fried chicken and BBQ ribs, so I had to see for myself. I ordered the fried chicken meal with collard greens and mac & cheese -- two sides I take VERY seriously. The fried chicken was incredible. The seasoning and batter reminded me of some kind of combination between KFC and Popeyes, while the inside stayed moist and tender. At certain points I genuinely forgot I was eating vegan chicken. It tasted and felt like I was eating a Southern fried chicken plate somewhere in Mississippi or Alabama. Then came the collard greens. Man... These greens tasted like somebody's grandma was in the kitchen cooking Thanksgiving dinner. They serve them in a bowl with plenty of pot liquor, so initially I thought they might be a little watery. Nope. That broth was PACKED with flavor. It was almost like a collard-green soup, and I mean that as a compliment. The greens and the broth complemented each other perfectly. And the mac & cheese? A1. Creamy, rich, flavorful, with this subtle smoky taste that I wasn't expecting. I don't know exactly what they did to it, but whatever they did -- KEEP DOING IT. I also tried the BBQ ribs. They were good, although they were probably my least favorite item compared with everything else. But that's almost unfair because the chicken, greens and mac & cheese set the bar ridiculously high. I also went into the ribs with huge expectations after hearing people hype them up on TikTok, and I'm not really a ribs guy to begin with. So take my opinion there with a grain of salt. They were still good. My one area for improvement would be customer service. The woman who took my order wasn't rude or anything, but I personally would have appreciated a warmer greeting and more inviting energy. I'm very big on customer service, and I think the person at the front counter sets the tone for the entire experience. Maybe she was just having an off day -- we all have them -- but that was really the only part of my visit that didn't match the quality and energy of the food. The restaurant itself is small, clean and has some really cool artwork on the walls. It has a nice atmosphere without trying to be anything overly fancy. But the FOOD is the story here. At one point during my meal, I remembered that Black people make up a relatively small percentage of Oregon's population, and I became convinced somebody from that percentage had to be back there in that kitchen cooking. Because there was no way these greens were tasting this close to something my grandma would have made on Thanksgiving. I came in skeptical. I left thoroughly impressed. Whether you're vegan, vegetarian, or eat meat every day of your life, I'd recommend trying Dirty Lettuce. And if you're from the South and you're skeptical about getting legitimate soul food in Portland like I was? Go ahead and try it. It legitimately reminded me of a Southern Sunday plate from somebody's mama's kitchen. Dirty Lettuce proved me wrong -- and I'm glad they did. Highly recommended. It's been around 7 or 8 years since my last visit but I remember the fried chicken sandwiches coming with two thick, juicy, fried boneless thighs. I found it difficult to eat more than half a sandwich given the size and excess meat. Usually I would end up pulling one thigh out and saving it for later! I decided to visit again on a recent weekend trip to Portland, arriving for an early dinner at around 4:30 PM. It was surprisingly busy, with at least a quarter of the seats taken in the shared seating pool even though it was so early in the day. Luckily there wasn't a line to order and the food came out within 15 minutes. Fried Chicken Sandwich ($13) - Just as how I remembered, this sandwich is still huge with two breaded and fried thighs on a bed of lightly dressed, crunchy cole slaw. It's really tall and doesn't compress well due to the abundant crunchy elements throughout. There's the bun that's heavily toasted until extremely, almost aggressively, crisp and almost dark golden brown, absolutely doused in butter a la Texas toast. There are house pickles on the bottom bun, very quickly pickled such that it develops no acidity, but changes to that crunchy yet soggy pickle texture. The two chicken thighs are expertly breaded until full of crags and valleys, seasoned well, and fried until crisp. The crispy quality is of a lighter variety rather than a hard crunch, very delicate as compared to a typical flour based fried chicken dredge. The chicken is different from what I remembered. Instead of being juicy full thighs, almost an inch thick at the meatiest, these patties are thin, sad, like a single thigh butterflied and cut into fourths width-wise. The breading is far thicker than the chicken itself - in fact the chicken almost is an afterthought here, completely getting lost in all the breading and everything else in the sandwich. Seriously, look at some of the photos from other Yelpers taken in 2016 and 2017 and compare to my cross section photo. It's a huge difference. I bet it's a cost cutting measure and it certainly isn't an appreciated change. Maybe it's just a sign of the times - while the 2010s air waves thumped with 'All About That Bass," the thick thighs have now unfortunately been 2020s Ozempic zapped. The major downside of the sandwich is surprisingly the bun. It's by far the most dominant component of the sandwich. It's the crunchiest element and the butter flavor completely overwhelms the taste buds. This is why fried chicken sandwiches are usually served on soft and pillowy buns, or at least buns that are only lightly toasted, so the bread can focus on and cradle the crunch element rather than supersede it. This is the first time that I can recall a sandwich where the bun is the dominant entity. (3/5) Dandan Fries ($10) - These fries are deceptively filling. They're really snackable and give a distinct moreish quality. It's like a snack where I absentmindedly keep reaching in the bag for more and suddenly it's completely empty. The fries combine a somewhat lightly fried potato, a delicate crisp on the outside and an extremely fluffy almost fall-apart tender inside, with a nutty, spicy, and mouth tingly mala sauce. The sauce is thick, rich, filled with fatty goodness. It's actually a really good glue, adhering the crushed peanuts on the fries so well, nothing falls off while lifting the fries out of the bowl. I especially love the mini cornichons mixed into the fries. They add just a bit of sweetness and acidity that balances so well with the fatty dandan inspired sauce. Without them, I think the dish would feel far too rich. With them, the fries go down the gullet at a quick rate. (5/5) I can't help but feel a little disappointed at Basilisk. It's another one of those places that seems to have decided to sacrifice quality in order to keep prices relatively low. While I enjoyed the Dandan Fries, I'm not sure that's enough of a draw to get me to revisit. Bathrooms - Four unisex rooms shared with the other establishments in the building. Their description shall remain vague and they will be nameless. I wasn't feeling like franchise food so I asked him to look around. He steered us to Basilisk. Boy, he picked a good spot. Basilisk shares a communal dining space with a Vietnamese spot, a bar, and a pizza place. It wouldn't be fair to compare Basilisk to Nashville Hot Chicken because the flavors are different and unique in their own right. I probably could have downed the dandan fries and been happy with my meal but I'm an overachiever. We each had the sandwich, shared the dandan fries, and my son had koolaid flavored soft serve. Warning to the wise - don't get too confident about the heat levels. The heat doesn't kick right away. It's a slow drop until you get that punch in the throat. Good punch but one nonetheless. Enjoy!
