Was interested to try this place out as it had a pretty large menu of vegan substitutions for traditional fried classics While obviously, I think I prefer fried chicken to fried tofu, I do have to say I was quite impressed here I got the Mr. Onion Fried Tofu Sandwich, and our table also ordered Jojos (potato wedges) Starting off with the wedges, I quite liked these. While they weren't as crispy as I would've wanted - I would say while some parts were, most of it was on the softer side - I did think that they were seasoned excellently. They also paired quite well with the mayo-based sauces we received. Moving onto the burger, I really enjoyed this. When I've had tofu on a burger in the past - it's usually been in smaller pieces - so getting such a massive piece that sticks out on either end of the burger was really nice. In addition, the breading was good - while not super-present. I quite liked the fact that it was very lightly breaded - meaning the huge patty was like 95% tofu - leaving the tofu to stand on its own as the majority of the bite. The buns were alright - I'm not big into vegan buns - but I didn't mind these The mustard sauce was also pretty good I will say, although I did order the Mr. Onion burger so I should've known what I was getting myself into, but there were just way too many onions on this burger. It was to the point where they absolutely dominated the taste of my first bite. I had to remove a lot of them from the bottom of the burger to actually make this edible. For the price, it is a bit expensive - but it's also quite filling so I didn't mind it. I also have to mention - because my burger was late, as a gift they brought out a full set of pastries/cookies in a box. Would definitely rate this a strong 3.5/5 if that was possible! The jojos were the star of the show for me (go figure) personally -- and the ranch was the star of the jojo show. I had a Spicy Vegetarian Burger and it was pretty good, next time I would probably try the Classic version. The pickles and sauce were good and the impossible patty was great. My sister thought her classic burger was solid, but she would have liked a little more sauce. Keep in mind that she likes a lottt of sauce. The bun was a little too big for her burger patty too, but overall it was tasty and all the flavors complemented each other. Ambiance-wise there was nice decor and plenty of seating options! The blinds kept out a lot of natural light but we were able to lift them a bit so it wasn't a problem! You clear your own plates and order when you arrive after you have looked over the menu so service doesn't feel super applicable but everyone was friendly and welcoming. read more

I checked this place out on my way back to the hotel and wasn't disappointed. The host was friendly and gave me a quick appreciation for already knowing what I wanted to eat! The inside was pretty packed for lunch and had some great music playing. The bar, yes they have a bar, only had a few people but I imagine it gets live at night. Stopped in for lunch a weeks back with the family. Jojo had ample seating for lunch and we were seated quickly. We had just got back from the Portland Japanese Garden and were hungry for some chicken. We got a beer (local IPA) and peach lemonade (little man's request) and got a number to sit for our food. They provided both boosters and high chairs for each kid and were very friendly. We ordered the Mr. Onion and Chicken Bacon Ranch sandwiches were delicious. Juicy big pieces of chicken with a crunchy fry. Big thick cut bacon made the CBR tastier than the Mr. Onion but the Alabama sauce and roll held up nicely for the sandwich. When I walked into Jojo, I was fresh off the Amtrak having not eaten a real meal other than bananas and Sabra hummus snackers in two days. If that context discredits this review at all, I do understand. That being said, Jojo's southern fried chicken sandwich was religion-changing. I ascended. The service was fast and friendly, the vibes are exactly what I needed (casual and cozy and fun). I don't know what husk of a person walked into Jojo but someone new walked out. After having an excellent experience at the Jojo food truck earlier this year, we made visiting the restaurant a priority on this most recent trip to Portland. This was a nice temperate Saturday evening and all tables outside were taken. Luckily there was no line. Cheddar Loaded Jojos ($13.50) - I did not expect this to be a tower of jojos. Let's start with the good - the tower is very well constructed. They melt cheddar between every single jojo, allowing the wedges to all cement together into a very structurally stable tower. The problems are multifold. Firstly, using cheese as cement necessitates serving the dish at room temperature, or at least not nearly as hot as fresh fried potatoes. Secondly, since the jojos all come cramped together, they start steaming, resulting in jojos that no longer have the crackly, crispy crust that made me fall in love with the ones served at the food truck. I feel like this dish was invented purely for instagram, to the detriment of the potatoes. Although, I'm not certain that the restaurant even uses the same recipe - even the edges not covered in cheese seem to lack the crackly, starchy surface that the food truck jojos have. Instead of being kind of clumpy, the batter is thin here, and while having a pleasing look due to the reddish spices that the potatoes are tossed in, the seasoning salt taste is not really prominent. I was so looking forward to the jojos only to be horribly disappointed. (2/5) The dish comes with two dipping sauces of which we went with the shallot vinaigrette and the spicy mayo. The former is a sweet, thick and lumpy vinaigrette. The latter is a creamy sauce that has a tangy spicy base. Mr. Onion Cheeseburger ($13) - Don't be an idiot like me and assume Jojo only serves fried chicken sandwiches. I ordered the chicken, but the cashier put in the burger. After asking me to double check the order, I approved it after just reading the "Mr. Onion" part. Oh well, stupid error on my part. I do love a good smashburger, so I wasn't wholly disappointed in the first place. In this case, the burger comes with two smash patties, both cooked on the flat top, resulting in even browning along the faces. They aren't cooked long enough to develop any lacy charring, and instead remain moist and meaty, not drying out at all. On top, they melt a slice of cheese and sprinkle on on chives, then they add a bunch of caramelized onion, brown in color, properly caramelized until sweet. Underneath the burger is a bed of raw onion that seems to be soaked to remove all the raw onion spicy bite, but leaves the onion flavor. Some pickles are added below for some acidity. There's finally a bit of Alabama white BBQ sauce added, very mustardy and creamy. It's all on a bun that compresses until it's almost as flat as a pita - essentially just there as a vessel to hold all the ingredients instead of being an integral part of the sandwich. This makes it so the burger doesn't have too much height to it, allowing it to fit easily in the mouth without stretching the jaw out. The sandwich is tasty, but I do wish it had a more substantial bun and more charring on the patties. (4/5) We visited the next day for brunch to see if there was a one time issue with the jojos: Jojos ($6.50) - Could the previous day have been an aberration? The answer: yes. These are the same as I remembered: supremely fresh crackly and crispy exterior paired with a tender interior. There are multiple types of crispness in the same package. The skin side of the potato has a more delicate crisp while the vertex has a harder crunch. The dish comes with one dipping sauce. We picked the Sweet Chili, which is a generic Thai sweet chili sauce that doesn't really go well with jojos. Oh well. (5/5) Chicken Biscuit ($13) - Huge biscuit with a cleavage line through the center, easily 1.5x or 2x the size of normal biscuits. It's baked until a crunchy crust forms, but the inside remains very fluffy, moist, and tender. It tastes like scallion mixed with an alkaline base. The chicken is seasoned very well and is fried until the breading is nice and crispy. I do think it's over fried since the chicken is stringy in texture. They drizzle a bit of honey over everything so it's sweet and salty. (4/5) Jojo Breakfast Sandwich ($14) - There's a lot going on here, with gooey overflowing eggs, salty bacon, a bunch of cheese, sweet caramelized onions, and even some nice crispy jojos inserted inside. It's tangy, creamy, slightly spicy, salty, savory, rich, all in one sandwich. That's not even mentioning the toasted, yet fluffy shokupan as the bun. It's so decadent that it's actually very difficult to eat due to the wetter ingredients dripping out while eating. (5/5) I don't know what happened with that tower of jojos. Looking through popular Portland eats and saw everyone rave about Jojo so made it our stop for dinner our first night in town. They have something for everyone - chicken, burgers, salads, vegan options, and drinks! You order at the counter and food is brought to your table. We came in as they were closing because I saw a photo of the tenders and I HAD TO try them. They did not disappoint! The tenders rocked and so did all the assortment of dipping sauces available. The description left out the all the wonderful chives that is sprinkled on this unique sandwich. This melt is far from dry, and was enjoyed through and through. The bread is clearly buttered and toasted to perfection, and the chicken inside is tender and the batter was crispy. I'm a cheesehead so thank you for adding more than one kind of cheese. The chicken was nice and juicy. Fried very well with a good balance of ranch. The jojos to me were a little too fancy. Wife decided to take us to Jojo for my birthday celebration. She knows I prefer a more casual setting and this was definitely casual. The orders are placed up front, and you find your own table. If you sit down first to decide on what to order, the flow of the line to order can seem a bit awkward with limited space and other guests just arriving. Overall the food were fresh, the chicken sandwich that I had was delicious, the jojos are OK by themselves, the real key is in the sauces. The Alabama white mustard was recommended by the staff, that was a nice spin to the Dijon mustard. The Jojo sauce was a lot like thousand island, it was fine but nothing new. The pepper relish was certainly my favorite, not super spicy but really adds a kick to the food. Lastly the hot honey, which was also well made and goes well with the chicken. All in all, great experience, love the sauces, the chicken was great and the jojos are above average. This place is worth a visit to see how you like the food. read more

This place was SO GOOD!!!! Was visiting Portland with my family for Spring Break and I am so happy we stopped here to eat lunch. Inside the restauraunt is so cool and has really cute funky decor. The ambiance is very lively and definitely super fun. You order your food in the front with the host and she gives you a little table marker before you choose a table to sit at. They bring out drinks, utensils, and eventually your food out for you. My family ordered the Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich, Spicy Fried Chicken Sandwich, and the Mr. Onion Fried Chicken Sandwich as well as an order of fries. There was a slight hiccup where they accidentally gave our food to another table causing the wait for the food to be around 35-40 minutes. We had to order an extra set of fries because we ate them all while waiting since they were getting cold. They did give us a free sauce and cookies though to make up for it and I appreciate how honest and transparent the water was about the mix up. The food was INSANE. I don't know if we were just hungry or if they literally put their badussy in it because of the mix up but truly we all enjoyed our food so much. I'm so sad I didn't get pictures of the sandwiches because they were so gigantic and delicious!!! However I did get a picture of the fries. I love potatoes so I appreciated that their fries were wedges!!!! The sandwiches were all so juicy, full of flavor, and each component blended together so nicely. After having Jojo's on the to visit list for a couple of years, we finally made the trek yesterday to the Pearl District to try it. And we are so glad we did...it was so good. It does have the downtown Portland vibe, and no one told us upon entering how to order, or where to order from. That was a bit discerning. But we came for the food and it was phenomenal. The service was fine, after we got going thru our experience. Amber, the bartender, started us off with some refreshing beers, and she did then tell us that we will need to order the food at the front desk area. She was extremely friendly and engaging. We tried it all. My wife who is vegetarian had an incredible Tofu sandwich with classic Jojo's and vegan bacon and cheese. Our daughter and I had the Classic burgers, loaded Jojo's with bacon, and of course we had to try the chicken tenders. Everything was preapred perfectly, and served immediately afte it was cooked. The buns are incredibly soft, and was told they are produced at a Vietnamese bakery So good. Of course, we had to take some of the cookies home for later. Wow what a sandwich. My pharmacist once again she was treating today and handed her phone to me I was immediately drawn to the BLT SANDWICH. I tried to hold back , but I couldn't help it. I added "extra bacon". It was so tasty. Wasn't the traditional BLT. The lettuce was shredded and the bread was a lightly buttered but not too squishy. The tomatoes were fresh and not overripe. And the bacon?? Let's just say I didn't feel guilty after eating it. So much protein and the mayo wasn't glopping off the sandwich like they tend to.
