Really delicious chowder that's worth the hype! No wonder there's always long lines! They've won a lot of awards for it too. We ordered online for pickup. Once it was time, we went to the pick up line (yes, there's a line for pick up!). Basically, they prepare the chowder in batches, so once it's ready they'll call a bunch of people's names all at once. Efficient!
One of the must visit spots in Pike Place Market for tourists. The restaurant itself has very limited indoor seating, however there are plenty of surrounding areas where you can sit and enjoy your meal. The line can get long, but it's pretty organized and moves fairly quickly. If you are in a hurry, you can order to go, which usually has no wait. The chowders come in different sizes and flavors, and are served with a slice of sourdough bread and oyster crackers. You can even order them in a sourdough bread bowl. I've tried the original clam chowder and seafood bisque, both solid and filling.
We kept hearing about this chowder so we had to try it. I love soup, chowder all of it so I had to find out what the hype was about it. And Good Lord that was some goooood chowder. I ordered the crab, lobster & shrimp chowder and ordered the Dungeness crab roll (it was the only warm one). Both items I picked were A++. If you're ever in Seattle this place is a must if you like chowder and lobster/crab rolls. . What I will say is that there is usually a long line. We got lucky and when we got there yes there was a line but it was a short long line compared to how it can get. We waited in line about 15-20 min and we were also able to order on line but you had to find a place to sit. Their sitting is only for people that wait in line.

God I love clam chowder. Hit the spot. Creamy, savory goodness. A little small/expensive but what isn't at Pike Place? Super good, we got a second bowl. The free sourdough is pretty good too.
Pike Place Chowder is definitely one of the must-visit restaurants in Seattle! My daughter is a huge chowder lover, and she was determined to have chowder every day during our trip. The long line outside was a clear sign of how popular this place is. Since it was our first visit, we decided to try as many varieties as possible. We ordered the sampler featuring seven different 4-ounce chowders, which turned out to be more than enough for the three of us to share. Every chowder was delicious and had its own unique flavor, but among all the varieties, the classic Clam Chowder was our favorite. We enjoyed the experience so much that we decided we'll definitely come back on our next visit to Seattle to try some of the other menu items!
Long line so you know the place is good! We didn't have to wait too long despite many people head of us. It was nice to see the menu posted throughout the line so we had time to decide which chowder to order. We ordered the smoked salmon chowder and the classic clam chowder. Both were very good! Very creamy, with enough add ins. Comes with bread and crackers for a crunch. This is a perfect rainy day meal. The ultimate comfort food while in Seattle!
Seattle staple I would say? Wouldn't expect the line to go that long honestly, but good thing it moved pretty quickly. They also hand an attendant helping coordinating the line and let people know that if you only had it for to-go, you could skip the line and ordered online. Smart to improve efficiency! We got their New England Clam Chowder and boy, I did underestimate how luscious it turned out. Rich fresh seafood toppings came just in the right chowder texture. Neither too thick, nor too thin! No wonder they've gotten that plenty of awards. Pro-tip, just order online, skip the line, and eat at public space within the market. Nice open table to watch the market's crowd!
Pike Place Chowder still reigns supreme! It's a must visit every time I'm in Seattle. My brother told me you can now order online and pick up instead of waiting in line - you pass that, go inside and they have a window in the back. I ordered off the toast app and it was so easy and fast! We got the clam chowder bread bowl and still amazing. They did forget to give us the bowl but when I went back, they gave it to me. Still so good and can't wait to come back!
Visiting Seattle for the second time, but my first time traveling here solo, I came to Pike Place Chowder on Saturday afternoon for a light lunch. I was running the Iron Horse Half Marathon the next morning, so I didn't want anything too heavy. I stood in line for almost half an hour, which honestly felt a little ridiculous, but eventually ordered the Seafood Bisque with Pacific cod, Northwest salmon, and Oregon bay shrimp in a creamy tomato broth. The bisque was pretty good. It came with oyster crackers and a slice of what I believe was sourdough bread. I took everything to a nearby outdoor seating area and ate there. I'd probably give the bisque itself around a 3.5/5. It was good, but I don't know if I'd wait half an hour specifically for it again. Still, I'll round up and give the overall experience 4 stars. Coming in clutch. After bad drinks and no food at our happy hour stop we came to Pile Place Chowder. We were so excited to not see a line. Well.... Because they closed in 4 mins. They didn't care. They were welcoming and helpful with suggestions. They allowed us to sit and eat without rushing us while they cleaned up around. The New England clam chowder and the market chowder were amazing. Being in the market is always great for people watching and atmosphere.
10/10 overall. Got their sampler and my personal favorite was the smoked salmon chowder. But all of them were so flavorful and probably some of the best chowder I've ever had.
I've been here before. I completely forgot to write a review, as I couldn't remember what I got the last time I was here. Alas the receipt is off no help either, there is no detailed breakdown; it's not descriptive and doesn't say what you ordered. While I'd say this place is very touristy, I wouldn't quite call it a tourist trap. There are a couple of other locations scattered around Seattle, but I believe this is busiest. The lines are usually long, but the wait isn't terrible. The challenge is finding a place to sit inside. I've been lucky on all my visits, and managed to secure a table. Before I came here I never knew there were so many varieties of Clam Chowder. The best way to try the all is to order the SAMPLER #AWARDWinningCHOWDER: ~ Seafood bisque - 3.5/5 This was our least favorite. While this was still good, it was the least tastiest one we tried during this visit. It tasted more like a Seafood Stew than a Chowder. ~ Market chowder - 4/5 With the "Chef's choice of fresh ingredients"; this on had lots of "local" seafood. Just a solid Clam Chowder; creamy, savoury and thick with a good mix of seafood. ~ New England - 4/5 There just a good solid New England Clam Chowder. ~ Seared scallop 4.5/5 Brilliant! We thought this was very unique; slightly tangy from the lime juice, akin to eating sourdough bread without actually putting any bread in. I got no issues coming back. I love meself some Clam Chowder!
Pike Place Chowder did not disappoint. There was a long line to order, however it moved quickly. Staff passed around menus to people in line, so we knew what to order when arriving to the front. I ordered the soup sampler with four 6 oz. servings for $21.95. The chowders were rich, creamy and flavourful. The restaurant has the option of dine-in and takeout, with a patio for outdoor seating. As the restaurant is a small corner shop, there were few seats indoors. You should definitely stop by if you're in Seattle! read more

Personally, I would say the chowder is good, the taste is excellent and the portion of the clams are good, and by itself it's a perfectly good clam chowder. Its been 11 years since i've been back to Seattle and this was a MUST VISIT place for me. I had came here with two friends, one who has never been to Seattle at all before. I was super excited to bring her to try Pike Place Chowder as it has held #1 position all these years. (Spoiler - we came here twice in one trip LOL) We had came here on a Saturday morning around when they opened at 11 but there was already line. LUCKILY, the turnover is pretty quick so didn't wait too long. TIP ! if you do not want to sit nearby or want to take it to go, you can order it online and pick up nearby ! First time around, we tried a 4-CUP CHOWDER SAMPLER, where you get four 6-oz cups of a chowder of your choosing. We opted to get the NEW ENGLAND CLAM CHOWDER, SMOKED SALMON CHOWDER, CRAB OYSTER & CHORIZO CHOWDER, and SEARED SCALLOP CHOWDER. Not to my surprise, NEW ENGLAND CLAM CHOWDER is STILL my favorite. So creamy, so flavorful, so many clams and other ingredients. A coworker had came here in the past year and said the CRAB OYSTER & CHORIZO was his favorite, despite not being a seafood lover. I couldn't really tell there was crab or oysters in it as the chorizo flavor kind of covers it all. Maybe that explains why thats his fav. The SEARED SCALLOP CHOWDER was similar to the NEW ENGLAND CLAM CHOWDER in texture and flavor except instead of clams, you get the texture of shredded scallops The SMOKED SALMON CHOWDER was probably the least favorite of the 4 we tried. Not saying it wasn't good, but the other ones are just better. The salmon was small but tender. Not dry feeling. Not overpowering amount of smokiness which is nice. Second time around, we knew what we liked. The "first timer" got a bread bowl with NEW ENGLAND CLAM CHOWDER. I just got a large 16 oz of NEW ENGLAND CLAM CHOWDER. Also got a small 6 oz size of SEAFOOD BISQUE. The SEAFOOD BISQUE was ... very "bisque-y". Texture is very reminescent of a normal bisque. Has cod, salmon, shrimp. Definitely a non-fav amount the 5 different ones we tried. All orders come with some amount of sourdough bread but we didn't think it was enough. We had also got some bread from Piroshky Piroshky so I underestimated my stomach space, unable to touch much of her bread bowl. SAD. IF you decide to dine-in, there is limited seating "inside" the restaurant. There is also an area nearby that is also allocated as seating for this restaurant, in front of the store. You can NOT "save" a seat prior to getting your food, which is nice. There is someone who is watching (sometimes they miss it because they missed one who snuck around and was caught after we told him). They will help seat you when a table is available. As said, turnover is pretty fast. Some people might linger a bit more but most are fairly aware of the wait and will vacate quickly. read more

This is what vacations are for...to try local places and experience the best places in town! There's a reason why this place has won so many awards because their chowders are so darn good!! My friends and I shared the 4-chowder sampler and they were the most amazing chowders I've ever had. I wish we had ordered more! We also ordered the Dungeness crab roll and it was so meaty and buttery! I could've eaten two or three rolls! This place is super popular so expect long lines but once you get to the counter there's a short wait for the food. This is not a place to sit, relax and chat. It's an order-your-food-find-a-seat-eat-and-leave-so-others-can-sit-and-enjoy-their-food type of place. Trust me, it's worth it. Definitely coming back here if I visit Seattle again. Pike Place Chowder totally lived up to the hype--and then some. I went with the 4-sampler option (each one 6 oz.) so I could really experience what they're all about, and let me tell you... I left with a full belly and zero regrets. I tried the New England Clam Chowder, Seafood Bisque, Crab & Oyster, and the Market Chowder--and honestly, every single one was incredible. The New England was rich, creamy, and classic perfection. The bisque was silky and flavorful, and the crab & oyster chowder had that briny, ocean-fresh goodness I didn't know I needed in my life. Came here for one thing only: New England Clam Chowder! & it was amazing. We stood in line at around 10:40am, but there's an option to order online for pick up. We continued to stay in line since we wanted to sit. Once it hit 11, the lines moved fast. I love how they have a rule for not holding tables. I felt if they didn't do that, there would be no seats at all. Once you order, you pretty much get your food seconds later. Utensils are right near the door. The restaurant is a small space in an alleyway, so even with using maps it could be a little difficult to find for people not familiar with the area. The space has very limited seating inside and some outside as well. You wait in line, order your food and find a table after you receive your food, if there any tables are available. I decided to order to go, the line moved quickly, the chowder was packed full of clam meat, but was a little runny to me. First things first DONT FEAR THE SEATING AREA it will clear up by the time you order. As soon as you order your foods ready and if you don't get a clam chowder bread bowl i dont know why you're even there. Absolutely amazing clam chowder and the bread they use for the bread bowl will have you going nuts my partner and my hands were covered in chowder ripping apart that bowl with the biggest dumbest smiles on our face. My 9 year old nephews first time having clam chowder we successfully converted him to a clam chowder lover it's gonna be a hard time for him to find one this good back home. An iconic, must-visit spot in Pike Place that serves the best chowders. We ordered the classic New England clam chowder and the scallop chowder. The soup is flavorful, hearty, and creamy with a perfect balance of clams and potatoes. The scallop chowder had a really nice hint of dill. Add the oyster crackers on for a crunchy texture, and you've got yourself a warm and comforting meal. The line moves quickly. Seating is cramped and can be difficult to find during peak hours, but we were able to share a table with another couple. Went there for lunch today. I ordered a lobster roll and shared the clam chowder in a bred bowl. I had never had a lobster roll before so I can't honestly compare it. The taste of the lobster was good. As for the chowder it was very good. It was pretty cold out so it made the warm chowder that much better. The only other bread bowl I've ever had was from splash cafe in Pismo beach. They are not the same. This bread bowl looked like it was made vs mass produced (if that makes sense) There was a very long line outside to order. I could have done more research but I did over hear someone saying there is a separate area for online orders to go. I opted for that instead and had my food in 5 to 10 minutes. I usually try to avoid super hyped-up tourist spots, but Pike Place Chowder lived up to its reputation. I waited in line for about 10 minutes (which moved faster than expected), and honestly, I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I got the New England Clam Chowder in a sourdough bread bowl, and it was rich, creamy, and full of flavor. I asked for them to season the top of mine with some Old Bay seasoning. The bread bowl was warm and soft and soaked up the chowder really well. I could definitely go without it next time though being that I was full of the chowder to even finish the bowl. Even with it being crowded I was able to get a seat in their outside patio. Worth the wait.. tons of clams in each serving. 3 sizes: 8 oz, 12 oz or 16 oz servings. The 12 or 16 oz servings are the best deals! Cheerful staff! We tried both the canonical "New England " and Manhattan-style clam chowders. Both are a good balance and not sludgy thick like some others.. Each order comes with a slice of sourdough French bread and high quality Westminster oyster crackers from New England. This is legit! The crew working was really friendly and welcoming to all! The clam chowder is amazing- creamy and thick with huge chunks of clams in every bite. Can't really smell the fishiness. Only smell the cream and potato, maybe a hint of seafood.
Is there gluten free clam chowder?
Yes! They have a couple of gluten free/ vegan chowders on the menu. Right now, they have Manhattan chowder (GF) plus Lime and coconut chowder (GF, Vegan).

Yes, it's not as busy on the weekdays but the line generally isn't the issue because it moves pretty quickly. It's finding a table to sit at because seats are limited and it's first come, first served seating.
Does the clam chowder have bacon in it? Can't have bacon.
They have several chowder options. I believe some (at least one) do and others don't. Workers are friendly and can help you with bacon free options.
Adult & childrens menu?
I only saw one menu. You can get cup/small, bowl/ medium or larger. What we did is ordered two bowls and then ordered other stuff at another restaurant and shared the various items that we each picked near the waterfront.
If I come in at 4:50 or 4:55 on a weekday (right before closing), will I still be served? Will I need to get my food to go?
Generally no. They tend to only make enough for that day and run out of most favors before the day ends.
How often do they change their Market Chowder selection?
The change the market chowder every couple of months.
We're taking our dad to his very first visit to SEA and will definitely visit this delicious and popular establishment for my dad to try. My question is..he's disabled so will there be a wheelchair-accessible seating?
Forget hitting the Pike Place market location, and instead go to the second location, which is on the top floor of the air-conditioned shopping mall called Pacific Center, complete with accessible seating, elevators and no line-up.
What is the best time to visit so there's not such a long wait?
Hi Damaris! The line tends to be shorter right before we open or close, but if you're local, you have an even better option to skip the line. We just introduced our Grab & Go take-out program that allows you to order online and pick up anytime…
Is there indoor seating?
Yes, but there is more seating outside. You can also take your food & go to a public seating area in the market by making a right at a sign which reads "Sea View Cafe."
