We visited on 1/3 and had a VERY mixed experience.
Pig Latin is gorgeous, absolutely. The space is well decorated, I loved the location, and overall felt very Insta-worthy.
Our service was great; you could tell they were newly opened, the server wasn't super confident with the menu, but had some solid recommendations. I was especially impressed with the busser that night who noticed we needed more chips and offered before I could even ask. Huge kudos.
The cocktails were delicious- I got the foam party- tasty and Insta-worthy with its cute flamingo floaty you get to take home. The Al Pastor margarita was also very good and I loved how inventive it was- my only let down was that it was pretty sweet- to be expected with a lot of pineapple, but I really felt like it needed salt on the rim with the spices. Or a touch more acid.
The food however was more or less a disaster. I was surprised at many of the prices on the menu, particularly the entrees whose prices match with Chandlers, Barbacoa or the Avery, but the quality was not there.
My first thought looking at the menu was how odd it was that so many things were marked as coming soon. Maybe it's just me, but I only want to see things on the actual menu that I can order; it didn't make me want to come back and try them it just made me annoyed that it might be offered in the future but I couldn't order it now. Additionally, I thought when looking at the menu, they are doing too much. There is no way they can get all of these cuisines done well; they feature S American, Korean, Caribbean, Hawaiian, Italian, and American (clam chowder). It felt like a lot.
I tried to order the Elote and was informed they were out, along with about 5 other items, so the menu just kept shrinking and shrinking. We ended up ordering the chip flight appetizer- 2 salsas, queso and beans. The salsa verde was by far the standout, the other salsa and queso were good but pretty standard and the beans very marginal. They were so thick it was hard to dip your chip without breaking and (this is a personal problem) they were so smoky and bacon-ey, they lost the bean flavor. I'm sure some people love them, it was a big meh from me.
My husband ordered the jerk chicken tacos, I got the skirt steak and the shrimp tostadas. The tostadas were the best thing we ate- I really loved them; a little spicy, crispy, delicious. The steak itself was cooked well and the chimmichuri was tasty, but it was wildly undersalted; it seems an easy fix but someone needs to be tasting things as they go. The worst were the jerk tacos; they were covered in the habanero/thyme mayo, except it only tasted like mayo. The chicken itself had good flavor but it was very soft and felt like it had been grilled and then put into a chafer where it lost all of its texture. The beans were the same as on the chip plate- so tight and crusted over. The rice was a gummy mess, very overcooked and in a gluey ball.
Overall, it was a hard OK from me. I get the appeal, it's very hip, colorful, beautiful inside, lovely cocktails, fun vibe but I would be hard pressed to go and eat there again since the food is the main reason I go to dine. Just my 2 cents. read more
