So I was very hesitant to come into the spot! I was in the neighborhood and I said oh what the heck let me go grab a couple of Ritas. I walked in and at first encountered the hostess. She was nice, I went ahead and told her "yeah just going to sit at the bar ". I proceeded to go to the bar area where she put down the menu... she didn't say someone, but will be right with you, didn't say anything after that. I waited a minute or two, was trying to exercise some patience. This is on a Friday afternoon around 4 PM. I'm checking out the menu. I'm checking out the bar. There were two bartenders. No one has greeted me no one has said hello, and no one has said a word to me. I saw plenty employees walking by chatting it up with each other. No one even cared to say hello or hey have you been helped yet? Nada, nothing! The guy next to me was looking at me like dude where's your drink? He had noticed that I had been sitting there for about five minutes, and no one had said a word to me. Five minutes had passed, and I finally had to ask the male bartender because apparently the female bartender did not want to be bothered, as she told the guy next to me, I'm ready to go home! So I grabbed the young man's attention and I said can I get a drink, please. He brought me the margarita and asked if I wanted something to eat. I replied " not just yet. I'm gonna enjoy this rita and then maybe I'll order an appetizer. A few minutes went by, I had to flag another young lady that was behind the bar and order the wings... they were supposed to be the twice fried crispy wings, they were simply gross. I took a bite and it seemed they had not been cooked. So I ordered the chorizo tostada, and it was OK. No one checked on me after that. There was no hey how's the Rita? Are you doing OK? I of course, had to ask the bartender for another drink.. never a good sign. I guess the guy next to me felt bad for me that he was compelled to buy me a shot. At this time, I just wanted to finish my margarita and get out of there. had to flag the bartender down again so I could grab my check. 99% of the time I leave a tip, and a good tip at that. As I am signing the credit card machine, enjoying the last couple of sips, the manager or bar manager goes " you're doing OK over here, buddy ? And I replied. I have wanted to try Spitfire since it opened, but the fervor and lack of availability for me to go delayed my visit. I had a day off for my birthday and decided to celebrate at Spitfire to coincide with my first visit (finally!). We had to initially decide on indoor or outdoor dining. Since it was a 96 degree day, we opted for indoors...though the only downside is they have the outdoors only separated by a magnetic screen "door", which still lets in heat and flies. The happy hour menu was presented as soon as we were seated with a cheerful ask if we wanted to start off with bogo margaritas. Yes, please. Keep in mind, this is bogo per person, not to share around the table. I started off with the Huckleberry Acapulco, which was slightly sweet with a hit of tequila. Next, I tried the Tijuana Tamarind which was more savory and evenly balanced. Next came the "Street Corn Named Desire" street corn appetizer with chips. The corn was heavily seasoned and spicy. I can handle spice and it made me sweat a little...but it was crave-worthy spicy, not "burn your tongue off" spicy. Next came the plethora of burritos and tacos that the family and I ordered. I opted for a single smash burger taco, filled with a crispy-edged thin burger patty nestled with fresh iceberg lettuce, cheese, dill pickles and the "spitfire special sauce" (which closely resembles thousand island dressing) in a beautifully griddled flour tortilla. Every bite was like eating a balanced burger, but just as a taco. I genuinely each bite. Everyone eagerly gobbled up their meals with "yummmmmm" occasionally floating around the table. Despite a few salty chips, it was a delicious starter. The Tacos: 1. Pollo Asado (GF): 5/5. This is a must-order. The chicken chicharrones add a great crunch, and the guacamole balances the heat beautifully. 2. Korean BBQ Pork Belly: 3/5. A very sweet/vinegar-forward profile. If you enjoy a sweeter taco, you'll like this, though it felt a bit heavy for me. 3. Baja Mahi Mahi: 1/5. Unfortunately, this was inedible. The breading was so greasy it masked the toppings, and the fish was quite chewy. Service Reflections: I arrived just after 3:00 PM (Happy Hour is 3-5 PM), but I wasn't given the HH menu or informed of the specials. I didn't realize the oversight until I saw the signage by the host stand at 4:01 PM. While my server Emily R. was pleasant, I was surprised the kitchen or service staff didn't address the untouched Mahi Mahi taco or offer the promotional pricing earlier. The food was very good, but when it comes to Mexican food, it was a little different from what I was expecting. Don't get me wrong--what I had was great. It's just not necessarily what comes to mind when you're craving traditional Mexican food. I would describe it more as an upscale, Americanized take on Mexican food, with prices to match. I was definitely surprised to see a $17 burrito! It was delicious, but it wasn't quite the type of burrito I had pictured when I saw tacos and craved Mexican food. Honestly, I probably would have given it five stars if I had gone in expecting elevated American-Mexican food. I had come here once before we moved to Idaho. We came here today (Tuesday) for lunch, almost two years after we moved to Star. It was about 12:45, and the place was pretty crowded. All of the booths were taken, and we were left with the enclosed patio area, which was pretty empty. The young blond woman (who would turn out to be our server, and who's name I have forgotten) told us we could sit anywhere. We chose a table close to the street. They had their overhead heaters on, a little too warm for me, but my wife enjoyed them. The table was plain, with uncomfortable metal chairs. Our server brought out a carafe of water, which is all we wanted. We both had burritos; my wife chose the carne asada, and I the pollo asada. Mine came with nicely seasoned, tender chicken, crema, and tater tots. I think there might have been more ingredients. They also have a verde and a roja salsa, both of which were very tasty and packed some heat. The large flour tortilla was nicely browned, and both of our burritos were very flavorful. My only complaint is that one end of my burrito did not have any chicken. So, more chicken, otherwise delicious. Our server did a very good job, checking back with us a few times. She was friendly and attentive. I did not care for the noise level. It was very loud, though I could still hear my wife speaking. However, we had a larger party of women near us that were extremely loud, until they received their food, and then they quieted down. Tacos are on the menu tonight and the websites for Google and Yelp suggest Spitfire Tacos and Tequila have been recieving positive reviews. On a Saurday afternoon, the place was humming with people inside, outside and on the roof. A positive vibe was in the air. We got a seat at the bar and looked over a large menu. We started with the chips sprinkled with tajin seasoning and a delicious and savory salsa. The tacos looked intriguing, so we selected the alta California shrimp with tajin crema slaw, guacamole, cotija, pica da gallo and chipolte crema on a corn tortilla. I could not taste the shrimp as the slaw and all other ingredients overwhelmed the flavor. The smash burger taco contained ground beef, government cheese (does not sound appealing), dill pickles, lettuce and their special sauce. Again, you could only taste the cheese. I didn't love the tacos and found them both grossly over-powered by the condiments. Another bone to pick was the swarm of flies inside the restaurant. It was difficult in defending the food from the swarms of flies. Eating here again will not happen. Spitfire Tacos and Tequila has a good vibe, nice building, friendly staff but they first need to refine the taco profiles, so one can highlight the protein. Bug control is a close second! read more

Over a year later and it is time for an update. We have been here dozens of times and I am happy to say the early growing pains are long gone. The front of house runs smoothly, food comes out fast, and quality has been consistent. The tequila and mezcal selection is solid and something we look forward to every visit. The house chips dusted with Tajín and the trio of dips are always a must. Do not skip the queso. When the weather is nice, the outdoor seating shines. The new top level deck with its bar and lounge-style seating has become our favorite spot to hang out. If you are hungry for tacos and maybe a little tequila, Spitfire Tacos is the place to go. I have driven by this place a few times and thought it was time to stop in...a nice afternoon with lots of sun and they have a rooftop patio! Yeah, I am in! Now the rooftop was closing, they were having repairs done to the misters...no problem, a little hot to be sitting up in the sun anyways...took a spot at the bar, had a margarita and ordered some food! This was my second time going there and I am so obsessed with their tajin dusted chips, truly life changing!!!! I was happy I got to try their Korean BBQ Pork Belly Tacos, you have to get them! I rarely eat pork belly outside of Asian dishes and i'm so glad I did - the taco was incredible. The pork belly was perfectly cooked and seasoned, the cucumbers were so fresh and added a lightness to the taco where it didn't feel heavy at all. First time Asian - Mexican fusion has actually tasted like a good fusion and not a bunch of random spices. I went on a Saturday so the ambience was louder but to be expected, I prefer less loud music however as mentioned, I know that's a consideration to have when going out to eat on a football Saturday. It seems like the servers are constantly "in training", and The greetings are delivered with an enthusiasm usually reserved for telemarketers. The teeny tiny dining room floor is constantly sticky, and the upstairs bar area looks like they hope that the rain will wash it down once in a while. Had one piece of shrimp and maybe a few ounces of beef!? Majority of soggy tater tots and cold! When we ordered we could mot add any special requests,such as extra hot sauce! So I called spitfire directly and the gentleman who answered the phone whom i gave my order number and requested just some extra hot sauce! He for whatever reason could not help me with the simple request and said he would get his manager to help. After on hold for what seemed like 5 minutes no one came back on the phone..... I am visiting from AZ and my mom and her friends took me to this cute restaurant.. we went during happy hour so drinks were $2 off. I ordered the birria taco and i can't remember the name of the other one but it was the first one on the taco menu with pineapple..Good and Goood!!! i also got the mixed drink with huckleberry... It was perfect and pretty to the eyes as well. we cot the chips with the three dips, Queso, salsa and guacamole.. the chips had tajin. Also fantastic. Chips were warm, guac was good but I didn't care for the salsa. Sons and wife liked the salsa. Son and wife had Birria Ramen. They both said it didn't have any broth and was spicy. They would get something different next time. Son-in-law had a taco and shrimp ceviche which he liked. Mom had an al pastor taco which she loved. I sampled the Ramen. It was so-so. I'm sad to say, I was unimpressed. On 2 different evenings I stopped in to eat here but the wait was too long. We eventually came for lunch instead. Your options are more like tacos, burritos, and appetizer type items. It felt incomplete, but then again it is true to its name "tacos + tequila" so you can say that's my fault for expecting more. For drinks we ordered the smoked Puebla pena which I wish was just a tad sweeter and the Paloma which was yummy. There were no complementary chips and salsa so we ordered the street corn with chips. The corn was okay. The chips had a good flavor. We then ordered the al pastor tacos and shrimp tacos. The al pastor was super fatty in all of ours, none of us finished them. I would not order that again. However, the shrimp tacos were soooo good! Would I return? Idk the small menu was okay for lunch or maybe a snack during a night out for drinks, but I couldn't imagine eating dinner when I'm really hungry here. I've been here multiple times- just me (to go) with a girlfriend & with a large group- all experiences were nice. Even delivery is good (via DoorDash.) As I'm sure you have noted from other reviews already, food tends to be very flavorful, spicy, not hot but spicy- which is not for for everyone. I'm personally thrilled to have a very flavor-full meal without it being hot. It's been awhile since I've been back, & I've never just chilled at the bar, but I'd suspect the bar would be a nice place for a solo meal. I like that the dairy/cheese is more a condiment vs the star of the show here. I personally haven't been impressed with the salads, but the tacos, though the standard street taco size- are more filling than one might initially assume.
