My wife and I decided to go to Barbacoa for dinner and man are we glad we did. The place was hopping on a Saturday night and after experiencing the delicious food and excellent service I understand why. We started with the stuffed chili appetizer that was packed full of the most tender beef and had a cilantro cream sauce to die for. We both had the "hot rock" filet with cognac cream sauce which was spectacular. The filets were perfectly cooked and the sauce was so good, I wanted it on everything. We ended the night with a fresh baked peach cobbler that was the perfect end to a great experience. On top of all of that, the decor was beautiful and the service was friendly, attentive and prompt. Barbacoa is definitely at the top tier of restaurants in the treasure valley and could very well be the best. We cannot wait to come back. read more

Arriving in Boise after an hours-long delay and the only place near the hotel open for hungry travelers is a place with a food truck, drastic measures needed to be taken to find some great grub for *hangry* travelers. Barbacoa is your place to go for a half entertainment and half great food overlooking the (Parkcenter) Pond for a great time and a great meal - (or not, there is a rooftop bar called Luna where one can imbibe if food is not your jam). This is a second trip to Barbacoa. This trip was perfect as hunger was involved AND a late reservation was needed. Barbacoa really books up, but we were in luck, snagging one of the last reservations on a Friday night! We had a lovely waitress and clean-up guy . Lighter appetites can get by on an appetizer (such as Stuffed Poblano Chile with its namesake Barbacoa Beef). We shared the Calamari Fritti with four different sauces which was lovely in presentation and delish! Saved for next time - they make guacomole table-side! Looks so entertaining and yummy! This review reports that surf and turf were enjoyed! One diner had the Baked Salmon, which was promptly eaten (so it must have been good) and yours truly had the special *American Waygu Ribeye Steak*. Not a staple on the menu, but a GREAT meal, especially if ribeye is a favorite cut! Pro Tip: If there is enough room for dessert, tell them you are here for a special occassion and they produce a cotton candy concoction that is sure to please! They were flying out of the kitchen on this late June Friday night visit. Hang on to your wallet! Not gonna lie, this is a pretty pricey meal, but if in the Boise area, this is a must! There is something for everyone and combined with the entertainment and low state tax ;), worth the trip! We all left happy and full and forgot all about the delayed flight! Another Pro-Tip: Oh and for those with a sense of humor, (or not), there is a small keyhole in the men's bathroom that appears to look directly into the women's room. The atmosphere is stunning with incredible artwork, a massive wine wall, and over the top decor that makes it feel like an experience rather than just dinner. The tableside guacamole was absolutely phenomenal and was the highlight of the meal. We also ordered the grilled octopus, carne asada, Hot Rock Filet, and the coulotte steak with Cajun shrimp. The Hot Rock Filet was a fun presentation and cooked perfectly. Unfortunately, the coulotte steak was much chewier than expected, although the staff handled it well and removed it from our bill without any hassle. The carne asada itself was good, but the rice wasn't very appealing. The service was friendly but felt a bit chaotic throughout the meal, and the restaurant was noticeably smoky inside, which took away from the experience. My husband and I are visiting from out of town, and after asking several locals for restaurant recommendations, Barbacoa came up again and again. We had an 8:30 PM reservation on a Friday night but arrived about an hour early. Despite the restaurant being busy, the staff was incredibly accommodating and seated us right away. Our server, Ryan, was fantastic--attentive, knowledgeable, and full of great recommendations. The tableside guac came highly recommended, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. I told my husband it was the best guacamole I've ever had (get it spicy if you're into that thing) The prices are definitely on the higher side, but the food, ambiance, and overall experience made it feel worth the premium. Somehow I missed taking a photo of my steak, but it was cooked perfectly and had a great flavor. Personally, I would have liked a little more seasoning, but it was still a very solid steak. Overall, Barbacoa delivered a memorable dining experience with excellent service, delicious food, and a beautiful atmosphere. A really fancy steakhouse in Boise with signature tableside guacamole and hot rock steak with a fire show! Reservations are strongly recommended especially the weekend, but usually for the nicer months, most people go for the patio so reservations are mandatory for that. Indoors were pretty empty so you can probably get away with walking in, but for peace of mind, I would recommend a reservation. We went on a Saturday during mid May so people were celebrating Mother's Day and graduation, so we had to make a reservation a month in advance for that dinner service. We got the BBQ duck quesadilla, tableside guacamole, and the signature hot rock filet with a side of zucchini chips sprinkled with cheese. This was more than enough for 2 people as every dish is huge. The quesadilla is delicious, with a good amount of duck. Kind of similar experience to a BBQ chicken quesadilla, but fancier. Tableside guacamole is good - lots of guac but since we were seated outside with a beautiful lake view directly, there were steps so it was not possible to see the guacamole prepared tableside. The server should have mentioned it as we wanted to see the preparation, and we were never informed as such so the premium for the appetizer was not as worthwhile. The hot rock filet was good. I loved the fire show when they pour the mix of cognac peppercorn sauce. The steak was incredibly high quality - really juicy and not much tendon. This is the type of steak I have been seeking in many restaurants that fail to deliver. The zucchini chips side was good, a little flimsy on the batter, but nonetheless satisfying. We got cocktails that were icetinis - a glass with an ice shaped like the glass. They pour a small portion of the drink on the glass and left the rest in the cocktail shaker for us to pour gradually so that the drink is not as diluted, which is a good touch. Service can be improved - I understand the server is fairly new but there should be a minimal amount of experience to serve at such a high end restaurant? Some big misses I had were not giving shared plates until we asked, covering a bit of the show with the arm when pouring the fire cognac, and when requesting the check, he took a pause to place the receipt at the table but failed to see that he placed the check on top of some guac we dropped at the table so my credit cards after payment were incredibly sticky and oily. If people are dropping hundreds for a nice experience, I expected service to be better than that. read more

Splurged and had a wonderful dinner out at Barbacoa. We love coming to Barbacoa and taking guests that are not from Boise so they can experience the Firerock Filet. While the price point here is higher than a typical date night for us, our experiences have always been worth the price tag. The staff is attentive and offers great recommendations. The table side guacamole is a must. So good and they tailor it to your requested spice level. Be warned, it is enough guac to feed a table of 6. So good. The Firerock entree is a crowd pleaser, and tastes amazing. You can't beat the experience of it getting flambéed at your table. I've also tried various cocktails and have never been disappointed. We came during a busy time and generally they like for you to have reservations but fortunately they had room in the VIP section so we were sat in seconds. The room is cute and has good vibes but it definitely is VIP. Closed off to any people watching. We got the crab bisque, flatbread stuffed pepper and it was amazing!! I ate all of my plate. The waitress was very kind and attentive. I had found something in my food and I wasn't sure what it was so I asked the waitress and she wants sure. It's been a few years since I have been to Barbacoa. Tonight we came in for my husband's company late Christmas Christmas party. Last year we celebrated at their sister restaurant Coa Del Mar and enjoyed every bit of it. My husband and his co workers can't get enough of the filet hot rock. It was an unanimous vote to come to Barbacoa to celebrate our post holiday dinner. Our first interactions coming in was not pleasing. I will have to say, the hostesses were quite rude and unorganized. Our table had already checked in and sat. We were the last ones to show up. The hostess had a hard time locating our reservation even though our party was already somewhere in the dining area. We repeated the reservation name to her several times. Clearly she wasn't paying attention since we had to say it over and over again. After several attempts, she finally located our party. "Someone will guide you to your table". After standing there for a bit we realized no one was going to "guide us" anytime soon. It's such a shame that we started our experience with this kind of service. We ended up just locating our party on our own. She was completely useless in the help department. Our server had gotten drinks started for our table since we got there late. She got us squared away after we got ourselves situated. We breezed over the menu while she grabbed our sodas. Guac was also started for the table. The table side guacamole never disappoints. We toasted, enjoyed our appetizer and hung out till our server was ready to take our orders. I ordered the ribeye tonight. My husband got the filet hot rock with a couple of his co workers. I asked for my ribeye to be really well done. With my new kidney, I can't really have undercooked steak. Our server reassured me that my steak will be cooked well done and that it was going to be great. For my side I got some asparagus. I have had the asparagus every time I have eaten here and it's always fantastic. It was busy tonight and there were quite a few of us in our group so our food did take a minute to get prepared. But after everything was dropped off, I knew it was worth the wait. Our food looked phenomenal! The gentleman who poured my husband's cognac sauce did a great job, great presentation. I got my beautiful ribeye on a black board placed in front of me. My friend next to me ordered the salmon. On her salmon was a vibrant orchid. It added such an elegant touch to her plate. Everyone's food looked fantastic. This is where I compliment the chef. My ribeye was juicy, flavorful and it had outstanding char marks on it. For my ribeye to be cooked well done, it was so tender. The sauce that was paired with it was tangy and spicy. It was the perfect sauce for my ribeye. The asparagus once again was money. I ate a little more than half of my steak and I look forward to finishing it tomorrow. Dessert was a must after we finished dinner. I have had the fried ice cream pops in the past. They are too good! But the bananas foster was calling my name tonight. Our friends next to us ordered the same dessert. The rest of the party got the fried ice cream pops. The presentation for the bananas foster was magnificent. We dug right in after the flame went out. The bread pudding was divine. The gelato that came on the side was sweet and creamy. Paired together the bread pudding and gelato was the ultimatecombination. As full as I was, I had to finish this lovely dessert. Our start wasn't the best. The hostesses are the first people to set the tone of your dining experience. I'm happy that our server, the vibe and of course the food made up for such horrible first interactions. Our server was on point and so was everyone else who tended to our table. With Barbacoa having such a rich and romantic vibe, it resonates in their food. Everything about tonight was lovely. I've been here three times and I'm always impressed with the atmosphere and experience. We sat in the bar for this visit and had a three course dinner. Started with a few appetizers, and of course had to get the table-side guacamole. It's made custom to heat preference so we got medium this time. Ryan was our server and attentive the entire time. We went to Barbacoa in downtown Boise for a birthday celebration and it was an incredible experience! The food was amazing from start to finish. We started with the table side guacamole, which came with both chips and vegetables for dipping. For our entrées, we had the lamb chops, two hot rock steaks, and the paella, and every dish was cooked perfectly and full of flavor. For dessert, they brought out a cotton candy cake with a flourless chocolate cake hidden inside, complete with a birthday candle. We also tried the cheesecake bites and the bananas foster, and they were all delicious. The service was excellent throughout the night. Prices are on the higher side, but this is definitely a high end spot perfect for special occasions, and worth every penny. We sat inside, but with the doors open we enjoyed beautiful views of the mountains and pond, which made the evening even better. My friend from Boise hadn't been before so booked the six of us a table so we could try it together when we had our reunion. The service was amazing but the food was hit or miss. The guac was super yummy!! My ribs were super dry. I mean, SUPER DRY! One friend enjoyed her seafood mix with coconut rice and another her prawn curry (?) but the rest said "meh" to their meals (hence the 3 stars). Took quite a while to get back to us to take our orders and unfortunately we had only water until our food was served around 7:30pm, an hour after we were seated. Definitely took WAY too long to get our food! The two Hot Rock steaks and sauce we got were delicious! The asparagus side order was so small and sad looking...so plain and boring compared to everything else! Tasted good though. The beef and sweet potato stuffed poblano is an appetizer and was told it was on the small side. It is actually pretty big, great presentation. It was definitely stuffed with a lot of beef, but I think they forgot the sweet potato! I would not have ordered it if it was just beef. My boyfriend made reservations for us on Valentine's Day, and from the moment we arrived, the experience felt special. When we checked in, the host asked for my name--not just the reservation name--because they had a little surprise for all the women. The restaurant had beautifully arranged a bouquet of roses for each woman, which was such a thoughtful gesture. They offered a special Valentine's Day menu, and everything we ordered was delicious. This gave me the sensation of a wizard of oz sort of thing! I have to say, I have wanted to come here for a long time! Actually stopped in once but wanted to watch a little NBA and have a bite but, No TVs! This is a beautiful space, gorgeous view of the mountains, doors open, the water there...breathtaking! Inside is very much the same but maybe a decorator that did a little too much coke, that's just a guess! I have to say, big fan of good food, presentation, creativity, flair...hell that is a huge part of food, culture, flavors! Also I will add that is something that I am very willing to pay for, tip for and appreciate. This did that, tried at least, way over the top...much like the decor! It's weird to have a Spanish style restaurant that has very few vegetable dishes! They have a separate menu for vegetarian and Vegan but you have to ask for it? The main menu is void of vegetable dishes, tons of seafood which is good for the most part! I admit, as a pescatarian I no longer eat meat, but I did spend 53 years as a carnivore and know a lot about meat! This looks like a steakhouse but with some weird presentation things in my opinion! I had the Trout, on a wood plank...table mixed it up with dishes. Birthday boy did the ribeye, medium (remember that). Now the Trout was ok, well cooked, nice sauce. Now the presentation included pouring a little alcohol on the plate to "bring out the flavor of the wood"! Now, one of the best fish dishes I have ever had was at a sushi place where they placed the fish, wrapped in foil in a plate of saki and they let it burn for about 15 minutes....when the saki burned out the fish was perfectly done...amazing flavor...this was not that! This was show. The wood plank literally served no purpose other than justify the $40. There was no char to the wood...fyi the flavor comes when the wood chars...It came with giant broccoli with a nice cheese sauce and some seriously dry and bland rice! All presentation with very little follow through. The birthday boy with the steak had it on a hot rock, flambéed ...it's a good thing it was on a stone since it was more rare than he ordered. Now, what to do if you don't want to be responsible for cooking a steak right, we'll serve it on a hot stone of course and suggest he cut it in small cubes and let it cook! Seriously?? You flow beef in from Italy, raise it in the US (don't see how that would improve anything? An animal is all about what it eats and how it's raised, being from Italy means nothing when it's raised like us cattle?). If you truly love steak, you know it's all about the preparation, the heat, the simple spices and getting it just right, for that cut, for that dish! Or, serve it on a hot stone so it cooks itself...at some point, to what the customer ORDERED! The beginning was a bourbon manhattan...on a single rock was the order! It came in a beautiful glass with an ice glass inside it, never seen that before! If you appreciate Bourbon, or many alcohols, you know how fast the ice melts affects the drink, the flavor of the alcohol, a good bartender (like a good steak chef) knows this! Presentation on this, 10, actual drinkability, damn near zero! It was horrible! I can see this as a great place to bring a date, impress someone, a client, a person you're trying to impress, have a fun night! If you want to have a great dining experience, I can think of a lot of places that are equally priced but the food will be a few levels ahead...the drinks will be better, maybe less fire, flair and sparkle...but I guess it's what your goal is! Ending note...love seeing Paella the menu...a Spanish dish that is all about the time, the preparation, the crust of the rice...if it wasn't for the meat (which is very common) I would have ordered...curious about that and how it would be, look, taste...seeing it on the vegetarian menu was a odd and worrying thing! You can't tell me a dish that takes time and preparation is taken seriously when it's on a menu you don't even promote! This tells me they are not in it for the love of the food, unless it has meat in it and that's just lazy! My husband took me to Barbacoa for my birthday. We had a great time, so I didn't want to upset the mood by complaining, but my Seafood Mixto was pretty bad. I ordered it because, well, I can cook a steak at home. But to prep the variety of seafood on this plate, hand make the pasta for the "spinach linguine in a spicy cream feta cheese sauce", then cook it all to perfection. Well, that to me was worth the $72 price tag. However, the seafood was room temp, the crab meat came in the form of itty bitty shavings, and the handmade linguine was overcooked, gummy, solid, and there was no trace of the "spicy cream feta cheese sauce" as promised. The noodles reminded me of refrigerated store bought Japanese udon that comes freshly made in a oxygen deprived plastic pouch. To revive it you place it in boiling water along with the spice packet. Before placing it in the water it looks like a brick of compacted noodles. My Seafood Mixto noodles looked like that brick. They were never placed in the proverbial boiling water and revived. They were just plunked on a plate and covered with the seafood and a pretty orchid. In some sense I would've preferred cooking and eating a $3.50 store bought package of Japanese udon, than being robbed $72 by being promised an experience I never received. Also, three servers came by and asked me how I liked my entree and I said "the noodles are overcooked, hard and gummy" to all of them, but all I got was a "I'm sorry to hear that" and they went on their way w/o attempting to make it right. read more

This restaurant was recommended to me, coming from out of town, and it has easily surpassed all my expectations. The ambiance is very lively, with eclectic decor, and service was on point. Our waitress was very attentive, always checking in with us and even offering pairing recommendations with our intended palette and entree. We started with the octopus appetizer and then had the bone in ribeye over the hot stone as our main appetizer...and boy they were OUTSTANDING! Cooked to absolute perfection and both were tender. I asked for the coconut rice on the side, which was delicious, however the size of the sides were a little disappointing - especially if I were to pay for it separately...$9 for just a small palm size portion. However, I am overall very pleased with my experience here for a date night and would absolutely be back next time I'm in town! Highly recommend! read more

Came in for a birthday and enjoyed the unique environment and interior! The restaurant has lots of history on the walls and the waitress was kind enough to explain all the art work and how the building came about. Apparently, it burnt down in the past! For food, I mostly enjoyed the handmade guac because they will smash it all up and make it right in front of you. Tasted fresh! The fritters were also delicious for starters. Definitely try the chicken pot pie as well! We also got the filet mignon tips pasta and carne asada. The pasta was fine but I would ask for the meat to be on the side. I asked for medium rare but it came out as fully medium or well done as they cook it with the pasta. Maybe I could also ask for rare to get "medium rare." I wish they would have maybe mentioned this to me prior to ordering because I hate tough meat! The carne asada was okay. Nothing special. We also got the fried ice cream but was disappointed to see that the ice cream was not "fried." Then why call it fried ice cream?!? Lol.. it was just vanilla ice cream with some sort of light cinnamon powder around it? Anyways, I'm feeling mixed because I really loved the appetizers but the entrees were just okay. Prices are more expensive here. Expect to pay $30+ per person. Great for date night and or friends. I'd like to come back try some other menu items. read more
