Pie Pusher's is a conveniently located Pie shop in the middle of downtown Durham. It's very handy if you live downtown, particularly at OCC. I've ordered single pepperoni slices, a big meaty pizza, sausage gravy poutine and garlic knots. In the year I spent living in downtown Durham I ordered frequently from Pie Pushers. While they were the most convenient for me, they were also the most volatile of all the pizza restaurants I tried. If I ordered a full or half Big Meaty it was always good. If you order slices, you'll typically get an undercooked, greasy slice. The appetizers have been average in my experience and the one time I ordered sausage garlic knots I actually got pesto knots, which was disappointing. All in all, Pie Pushers is one of those places where if you get something and love it, only get that. You'll most likely end up disappointed ordering other items off the menu. read more

Vegetarian: I had a Sicilian Cheese Slice, which is similar to a deep dish pizza. The crust is thicker than a regular slice and it's cut in a rectangular shape, the portion was smaller than expected. It was really tasty because their sauce is flavorful and compliments the cheese well. I would eat it again, it sort of reminds me of lasagna. My sister had the cheese pocket, which is what they call their calzones. The pocket was better than the pizza and that really surprised me. They have about 6 different vegetarian pizza options. I'm excited to try more of them and I would recommend Pie Pushers for other vegetarians with one warning: do not order the basil pesto garlic knots. They tasted like dried out spinach with waaay too much basil. Vegan: Sorry to report that not even the salads are vegan. Gluten Free: They have a gluten-free crust but I don't think it is available by the slice. They cost an extra $2-$4. I didn't try it so I can't report on the taste. Service: You order at the counter and then pick it up when they call you. The cashier was very helpful with recommendations and patient while we made our decisions. Overall: I would return, they have a nice casual atmosphere. They aren't weird about their employees having piercings and tattoos and I appreciate that in a restaurant. read more

I am kind of a pizza snob. Most pizza places, especially the more popular ones, are trash. Seems like southern people like their pizza like they like their tea, so sweet you don't taste the cheap ingredients it's made from. Case in point is Lilly's pizza, which has so much sugar added to it that I can't stomach it. Pie Pushers on the other hand is good pizza. Solid NYC style pizza. The only thing keeping it from being 5 star pizza is I do think they cheaped out on the dough flour. Most people probably wouldn't notice, but I did. It's not bad, far from it, but real NY pizza is made with "00" type flour, which yields a crust that is slightly crispy on the bottom, but moist and chewy in the middle. The crust at Pie Pushers is missing that chew. That said I'd definitely buy it again, and like most pizza in this area, it benefits from a short stint in a toaster oven prior to eating it. read more

This is not a bad place to visit if you are craving for pizza. It's easy to miss since the shop is upstairs so please look carefully. There's a small door by the bar that will lead you up the stairs. I stopped in for a slice of pizza and I enjoyed it. It was unique with a nice crispy crunch. The slice was enough to give me energy for a quick run. It was $3-4 for a single slice which is a bit steep for a small, thin slice of pizza. Although it was small, it was unique. That was the selling point! Great customer service overall! OMG Pie Pushers has the best pizza you could ever hope to put in your mouth! For real!! I thought they just had a food truck, I had no idea they had a restaurant. I wish they would open a location close to my house! They offer specialty pizzas and toppings that you won't see elsewhere. TL:DR - floppy grainy crust. 1243 was interesting but overall bland and unbalanced proportion of toppings. Queen Anne was a win with a great garlic goat cheese flavor profile. Quick delivery but overall high price point. Pie pushers came as a recommendation. We got delivery and did half a queen Anne and a 1243. Out of the two the queen Anne was better. The garlic flavor really came through and it tasted great with the goat cheese and basil. We got the 1243 cause it was the most interesting with the bell peppers, pistachios, and meat. But it was really just kid of everywhere. The pistachios seemed out of place and didn't really add much. The caramalized onions and meat combo were great but the amount of peppers was too much and half my pizza was crunchy peppers. Needed to be better balanced with the other toppings. The crust was also a thinner grainier crust that really wasn't doing it for me. It was too floppy to give my slice any support or structure. It didn't have much substance or flavor. It was just kind of there cuz it was expected to be, not because it added anything. I will say the delivery was super quick though. Yum!!!! Came here for a late night snack after checking out one of the local breweries. This place is very cool because they offer not only selected slices but also HALF pizzas. Yes. Half pizzas. Their full pizzas are 16" (8 slices) so the half pizza is half that (duh). They have a super interesting pizza with corn on it...it was delicious....made even more delicious by the addition of bacon. Just do it. Order the corn pizza with bacon. It's so worth it. The crust is delicious here. I'm kinda pizza picky and this place was tasty! I'll definitely be back! read more

Great for some late night pizza that hits the spot. The entrance is easy to miss, and you go up a staircase up to the second floor. The inside of the restaurant is kind of grungy, and could be a bit cleaner. Also, towards the end of the night, they were out of all pizzas except cheese and pepperoni. Also, even though it says they are open until 2AM, the actual seating space of the restaurant is actually only open until 11PM; you can order some to-go food until 2AM though, but you need to wait outside on the street. read more

My new favorite pizza place in the Durham area! Popped in here for a spot of brunch with the wife on a Saturday morning. We timed our arrival nicely because a minute after we stood in line, about 15 people just came in! But either way it didn't take long to order or for the food to get to our table (and even less time for us to gobble it all down!) They have a separate Brunch menu on Saturdays but their regular menu and Specials are always available! So we got a slice each of the Fall Squash pizza and Asparagus goat cheese pizza - both excellently flavored, seasoned and baked! Loved the innovative and seasonal flavors! For nibbles we also got some baked garlic knots stuffed with Pesto (which actually turned out to be mashed Basil leaves) and some crispy fried sugar donuts with a side of raspberry jam! Both were great too! A bottle of ginger beer and ginger ale washed all that good food down too! Hope to be back again soon! read more

Called 20min prior to closing and was told they are not accepting orders. I asked if I could walk in since I was 2 blocks away and they said no. If your store is open until 11 but you only accept orders or customers until 10:30, do yourself a favor and say that somewhere so there aren't expectations of really being open until 11pm. read more

Overall my experience at Pie Pushers was fine but I wasn't impressed with their Pizza. The pizza tasted average, it wasn't horrible but wasn't something I would actively seek out eating again. The flavor was overall fairly bland. There are a number of non-pizza options on the menu which is nice to have some variety including French fries, which I got and came in a large shareable portion. There are specials on a chalk board when you walk in as well that change periodically. Prices were reasonable. The location is a small space on the second floor of a building and is a first come first serve seating. read more

I was in the mood for pizza for lunch today and went to check out Pie Pushers around the corner. Important thing to know is that it is upstairs. If you can't climb stairs, this isn't the place for you. You order at the counter but your food is delivered to your table. I tried a slice of the day (salami pesto/$4) and the fried Brussels sprouts appetizer ($5). Both were excellent! The sprouts was a super large serving. They obviously mean this for sharing. A modern day Cinderella tale of food truck transformed to brick and mortar! Cute space right above Pinhook and very close to DPAC with super fast food to table times. Downside is that it's not much different from other downtown Durham pizza joints. There's a few booths and various two-tops that can be combined to seat more people. Be prepared to share tables as it is a small space. We ordered the brussel sprouts and a half pie of Barb's Margherita. I wish they had some more special pizzas that their food truck used to have (ie: Lamb of God) so the menu was different from the other pizza joints. I also wish they had more locally sourced meats. The margherita was tasty, nice crust and simple, flavorful toppings that were enhanced by the chili flakes and Parmesan at the table. The brussel sprouts were fried really well, but the aioli was too thick, heavy, and one note to compliment something as heavy as deep fried brussels. I would recommend they tweak the sauce a bit. Cozy spot with average pizza and prices. They're open late on weekends, which is a good strategy on their part because I would only ever come here for a late night slice after visiting a few bars/breweries. The place is on the second floor and sort of difficult to find from the outside. One other reviewer mentioned this - the cashier guy was impatient and looked pissed off and was borderline rude. Plus at around midnight, most of their flavors that you could buy by the slice were gone, so I ended up getting plain pepperoni and I'm normally vegetarian so yeah not ideal. Maybe if I got one of the more interesting options I would've been more impressed. read more

Oh boy! When I heard Pie Pushers was doing to start doing delivery, I was so excited! I've been a fan of the food truck for years, but hadn't yet made it to their BAM location, so when I got the opportunity to be lazy in front of the tv instead and still enjoy their food, I jumped at the chance. Since delivery is brand-spanking-new, within the past few days, I was expecting there to be some bumps. And there were. Apparently, there's only one person both greeting customers and taking delivery orders, and the phone this person is using is not good for being able to hear callers, especially when giving address, name, and credit card info. So it took a long time for me to place the order. The customer service aspect was perfectly fine, it was just the logistical issues that were interfering, so I don't blame the receptionist at all. My order came pretty quickly, actually, though it looks like this was a first time delivery for the delivery person, who didn't really have the logistics of that lined up, either. Didn't have a pen, then realized he did have a pen, etc. Still, very courteous. And I could smell the wonderful scent of my pizza wafting towards me the whole time. Which is the whole point of this experience, and the pie was as delicious as ever. Absolutely mouth-watering. I got the Dan's Zza (hold the onions), which means a fantastic crust, luscious tomato sauce, pepperoni, salami, mushrooms, bell peppers, and green olives, though it was also supposed to have country sausage, so I'm not sure if that's a mistake on the menu or a mistake on the pie. In any case, I didn't really care because the pizza was just as awesome as I remembered. I think they will work the kinks out, and some of the frustrations with ordering are negligible when your tastebuds meet the product. read more

This is my *favorite* spot downtown for a bite. The space is upstairs and different from any other restaurant in the area. Everything is always fresh, their sauce is just to die for and the proportions of toppings are usually spot on. The new cheesy bread they have is really great (but I will say the quality has been a biiiiiit inconsistent). the Caesar salad might have my new favorite salad. The main reason I'm not giving 5 stars is that I've repeatedly experienced unfriendly staff. You order at a counter and then your food is brought out to you - but generally the person at the counter, taking our order, always looks like they don't want to be there - they are always disinterested if you have a question and, frankly, quite unpleasant. I would love to say this is a fluke....but it's pretty much been the case with various staff each time I've eaten at Pie Pushers. I'll admit, the few times I've been to Pie Pushers has been during nights fueled by a few adult beverages. During those times, I crave pizza and when I'm in the downtown Durham area I'm happy to venture up those flights of stairs to Pie Pushers. The gleaming "PIZZA" sign on the door is a happy beacon of light when you want something greasy, and it takes all my willpower not to order everything. The garlic knots are delicious - definitely go with a large order because they will be inhaled immediately. I've liked the pesto ones and the buffalo chicken ones the most. Art bell is a delicious spread of veggies and cheese, though the flatbreads are not quite the favorites - just eat it without! I like that you can order half a pie rather than a full one if you're just not feeling it - the sicilian is doughy and hearty, but I prefer the specialty pies more - Queen Anne is incredible - I love the goat cheese and fresh mozzarella on the pizza, and the Chorizo was good but not as memorable. Despite the prices being a bit high (but again, they're around the same price as Trophy, and I'll shell out money for it), it's a great place to stop in Durham when looking for a slice. They're definitely not as crowded as Toro, and not as eclectic, but good nonetheless. read more

Finally got around to trying out Pie Pushers when we had a bad experience at our regular pizza place. I was so excited to see that they serve pizza by the slice! Upon walking in, we stood in line for a few minutes which gave us a chance to peruse the menu and make our final decisions of what we wanted to eat. I ended up getting a slice of spinach and ricotta pizza, it was huge and delicious. I also got a small house salad, which was also pretty large and filling. I really like the atmosphere of Pie Pushers, pretty casual, everyone was very friendly, but it also felt very clean and well taken care of. Very good low key dinner. Staying in Durham for a work trip and we wanted something easy and lo key for our last night... The idea of pizza sounded great! We were able to walk to Pie Pushers from our hotel (unscripted Durham). Upon arrival we were a little hesitant going up the stairs but once we arrived it was nice... the 2 gentlemen behind the counter were very nice, friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is laid back, loved the rock music playing! Our low key night that we wanted was surely met here. The Brussels sprouts and eggplant fries were delicious and a nice twist on normal veggies that I really like. I am a big fan of wedge salads and this one did not disappoint.. the pizza slices were a good slice with thinner crust, and the right amount of cheese and sauce. This is a darn good slice of pie. The staff is very friendly. Yesterday, someone even complimented my glasses even though they were fairly busy and getting lots of calls. (I'm pretty pleased with my new-ish glasses myself). I'm here fairly often because I'm either at the Pinhook or using my Classpass points at the yoga class (don't judge, there is one instructor who brings her dog, okay). It's an easy spot to go to if you're in need of some good comfort foot. I also recently noticed that someone cross-stitched the transgender symbol as pizza. I don't know, I thought it was a nice gesture of inclusivity considering this state's history of mistreating trans people. PS HB 2 was never repealed. The "compromise" passed last year reinforced the worst, most hateful parts of HB 2 and no municipality is able to introduce protections for its LGBTQ+ citizens until 2020 (presuming it doesn't get extended for another four years if we can't flip state legislature). THANKS, NC DEMOCRATS FOR SCREWING US OVER BECAUSE YOU WANTED NBA MONEY. Tangent over. I've enjoyed everything I've eaten here, I enjoy the people who work here. My won complaint is my tastes are pretty simple and I would prefer to choose my own toppings on a slice. Most by the slice places let you add whatever ingredient you want since they have to stick it in the oven anyway to heat up. They don't do that here, which is kind of a bummer. I like Pie Pushers more than the other 2 nearby sit down pizza spots, Pompieri Pizza and Pizzeria Toro. I like how you can order by the slice at Pie Pushers though the pizza itself is pretty similar to Pompieri. I really love their wings which are big and juicy. Be warned, the hot pepa habanero wings are quite spicy though there's plenty of other flavors. The pizza is slightly on the greasy side but the ingredients are high quality and the taste is mouth watering. You can also find the pie pushers food truck around the area as well. read more

Pie Pushers has a cozy little space and impressive variety of beverages (both alcoholic and non). The pizza is thin crust style and checked all of the most basic boxes. Pretty ordinary pizza, solid. While the quality of my experience would garner 4 stars, I docked one because the wait for my food when I dined in at 7 p.m. on Thursday was ridiculous. My companions ordered a pie, myself and a friend ordered two pepperoni slices and a half pie respectively. My and my friend's food took more than 30 minutes (even though there was only one person that ordered before us -- though many that ordered after us got food before us), about 20 minutes after the whole pie came out so my group took turns watching the others eat. Overall, I think I would recommend Pie Pushers for a late-night snack, but I can't say I'd recommend it for a group dinner for 4. read more

For years, I've been waiting for a slice and a soda place to open downtown. I'm not talking gourmet pizza, either. 2 slices of cheese or Pepperoni and a Coke for $5. Quick, standard issue lunchtime fare. Unfortunately, in downtown Durham, rent is sky high and there isn't always a ton of foot traffic. Recognizing that they won't get by on low prices and high volume, most purveyors of fine food opt to charge more than you'd see in most cities so they can pay the bills with a lower volume of sales. Maybe I'm not the target demographic here. I'm used to two slices of high quality 'za and a drink for a five spot. I don't care if the cows that produced my mozz were milked while listening to Gustav Holst or treated to weekly massages. I just want a good, reliable slice at a fair price that's accessible late at night, when I'm downtown for lunch, or after the bars close. If that's your thing, keep walking.
