I went here for the first time with my mother and our friend. It was empty when we got there at 2pm on a Saturday for lunch, which I thought was odd but ok. The fried calamari was so dry, it tasted like sandpaper. It was thin and chewy. The menu says it comes with pesto but the waitress said the pesto is mixed into the marinara sauce or something?? What? I didn't even finish it. Our friend is vegan so she ordered the butternut squash with no cheese and they brought it out with cheese. They offered to take it back but we didn't want to make a big deal about it so I ate the cheese for her. I figured you can't go wrong with chicken cutlet Parmesan in a Italian restaurant. They stacked both of the chicken cutlets on top of each other with two slices of mozzarella on top. The chicken cutlet breading was so soggy that I could just scrape it off with my Butterknife without any effort and the chicken itself was chewy and dry, disgusting. I literally had to send the entire dish back because it was not edible. I ended up just ordering gnocchi with eggplant like my friend had ordered and that was overcooked and soggy as well. The braised short rib was done perfectly, pasta could have been more saucy but great dish, would definitely recommend and I will get this again. I have gone to Piccante many times. I generally have found it to be above average. But tonight my experience was one of the worst restaurant experiences that I have ever had. I was seated and ordered. The tables were about 60% occupied. I waited for over half an hour for my order to come to my table. Nobody came to follow up. More time went by. At the hour point I was the sole person sitting at a table. The rest of the restaurant was empty. I asked the waitress when I could be served. She said that they were only taking care of on line orders so I could leave... I did so...and I shall not return!!!! read more

I was there yesterday celebrating my brother's birthday. I decided to try this place because of all the reviews saying how amazing the food is. The food is good but not amazing. I went to Gino's before and the food there is way better. The service is slow but I had that in mind from the reviews and I didn't mind. I had the fried calamari and shaved Brussel sprouts salad. They were just ok. Then I had the skirt steak as my main. I like the Brussels sprouts with bacon but the steak needed more condiments. My brother said his lasagna was ok. Fantastic Italian food at it's finest. This is a small, fine Italian restaurant serving up fantastic food. Their homemade pasta is the best consistency - chewy, flavorful and with an excellent mouthfeel. My husband and I have been here on our own for date night and recently had a big dinner with both of our families coming together for a huge meal. The waitress was incredible and the food was cooked to perfection. Every single person enjoyed their entree and the appetizers were great. We ordered grilled calamari, fried calamari, salmon, fettuccine alfredo, brussel sprouts, the short rib, gnocchi, and the grilled hanger steak. Every single family member cleaned their plates! The beer, wine and sangria were delicious too. This is a true 5-star establishment from the quality of the food, to the rich, Italian flavors of each meal, to the very sweet waitress that handled our large group with ease and a smile. Underrated Italian place in bay ridge. If someone hadn't told me about this place I would have never noticed it. Tonight was the third time I've had it and it has been solid every time. First time I at the restaurant itself and it was small and charming. Staff was very friendly and place was starting to fill by the time I was leaving. Food is always fresh , tasteful and perfectly portioned. Pasta is house made and perfectly cooked, never too salty. The hanger steak has never failed deliver. We pulled up to a very small & quaint restaurant. Our table was waiting for us. The service was a 10 plus. We started off with the Fried Calamari, Tomatoes & Mozzarella & Bruschetta everything was delicious. For Dinner we had the Lasagna, Chicken Marsala with roasted potatoes, Salmon with mashed potato & spinach & Bronzino which was a Special. Everything was just perfect! The short: a tiny, nondescript little spot that's serving up high-quality, homemade Italian food -- with awesome service! The longer: we came here for Mother's Day. We made a reservation (recommend making one!). We started with awesome Italian red wine (~$30) for a bottle and homemade bread rolls. The menu is focused on their homemade pastas, but everything we ate was awesome. We shared a bunch of appetizers and then got entrees. My favorites: caprese salad -- tomatoes, basil and soft cheese were all SO fresh. Calamari was perfectly seasoned and came with a very good spicy red sauce. Lasagna was great... it wasn't overly cheesy and had a yummy béchamel sauce. For dinner... I had the salmon. It was perfectly cooked medium rare, and came with heaps of mashed potatoes and sautéed spinach. I took a chance on this place as I have several favorite Italian restaurants in Bayridge. There are a lot of small restaurants that have popped up on Third Avenue between Bayridge Avenue and 75 street. Reading through the Yelp reviews I thought to try something different. What I liked from the reviews were the consistent higher scores and comments. I appreciate the owner Marta responds to the Yelp reviews and acknowledges both the good and bad and appears to want to improve where needed. I gave it 5 stars because of their effort to deliver a great meal to their customers. I came in on a Sunday afternoon around 2:30 pm as they just opened for the day. They were empty although by the time I left an hour and change later all the tables had customers except for one table. The restaurant looks like it will seat 25 max and is narrow. My waitress was the owner Marta who was friendly and accommodating. She answered all my questions as it was my first time here. I started with a glass of red wine which was a blend, it was a good size pour as I read in other reviews. Had the grilled octopus in a pesto sauce, it was grilled nicely and had a good flavor. All the food overall was perfectly seasoned. What I liked most is that as much as possible is home made. The bread and pastas are baked daily. We had the Venezia pasta which Fettuccine with shrimp, mushroom and capers in a white wine sauce. We also had the Milano pasta which normally comes in a cream sauce, I opted for the white wine sauce which was my request. This Fettuccine was chicken, mushroom and capers and turned out similar to the other pasta. For desert we had the chocolate cake. Pros- Attentive service with the owner on sight. Home made bread and pastas. The menu has a good selection and their were a good number of specials I did not mention previously. The prices are very fair. The food was fresh, just the right temperature and seasoning. The portions were a good size, not too much and definitely not tiny. Once the restaurant was filled there was a good vibe as well. Cons- Narrow space I can see it being cramped on a Friday or Saturday night. I hope they will put some money back into upgrading the space and seating. I would like to see some cushioned seats and better tables. The brick wall on one side was attractive although the opposite wall could use sparkling and some fresh paint or color. I guess I'm being picky although I'm looking for the restaurant to have a warmer cozy feel to match the home cooking. My cons are not meant to detract in any way, i look for certain things in the restaurants I go to and comment when they are not hitting my expectation in that area. I'm just looking for ways Piccante can compete with some of the other established restaurants in the neighborhood so they stay around a long time. They've been open about a year. What a lovely little spot! My friends and I were running errands near Bay Ridge when I got a hankering for some pasta, so we scoured the map to look up some places that wouldn't charge an arm and a leg. We found Piccante, and what a find! It was a sweet lowkey spot, and service was attentive and hospitable. We felt like family! They started us off with something to drink, warm rolls, and butter which were fresh & delicious. To share, we started with the Fried Calamari, a Polenta with a creamy Mushroom sauce, and a delicious salad with arugala, apples, candied walnuts, and gorgonzola. We polished the apps off so fast, I don't even think we realized how full we were when we ordered entrees. My friends shared the Brown Butter & Sage Ravioli, where I got the chicken and mushroom fettuccine. Took three delicious bites before the itis set in and we had to ask for to go bags, but so looking forward to eating those leftovers! We had a great time & would come back in a heartbeat! POLLO E FUNGHI RISOTTO- delicious. My brother really enjoyed it. It was very creamy and flavorful. Super heavy for me to eat by myself but good to share. Carne- the steak was pretty good. It was salted well, and had chimichurri sauce. The Brussel sprouts were OK. The dish wasnt really anything special compared to other steaks I've tried but still enjoyable for those who can't eat carbs. TIRAMISU-dessert was pretty amazing. It was so soft and light and decadent. Chocolate lave cake with ice cream--it was alright. Not really crazy about it. The lava wasn't warm enough for me. It's unfortunate I have to bad mouth a businesses but if they don't mind serving subpar poorly made over priced food and passing it off as authentic and choice dining then I don't mind shedding proper prospective: The only thing authentic is the name of the place "Piccante". The calamari was horrendously stale and over fried (see pics), the chicken Marsala was very generic -lacked flavor and the potatoes were unbelievably over salted. $20+ for a dish that a regular run of the mill pizzeria could do better and serve up with fresher ingredients. $17 for calamari that tasted like eating rubber bands. Disclaimer Background Story: We are visiting NYC and staying at some friends' place. We'd driven several hours and got in late enough that we didn't feel like leaving the apartment and ordered pizza delivery. Did this online and was charged despite, as we later learned, the pizza place being closed for the holidays. After some 70 min of waiting and coming to the aforementioned conclusion, we decided the safest way to ensure that we dine was to venture into the cool Brooklyn night and see what *is* open. My point is, my excitement at finally eating at ~9pm could be positively affecting this review. Anyhow, Piccante was our savior. The prices were reasonable for the quality and quantity of what you're getting. We always love homemade pasta so we checked it out. We got the Prosciutto e Mozzarella - which was tasty followed by the Napoli - which is gnocchi with spicy sausage, mushrooms and pink sauce and the Venezia - which is fettuccine with shrimp, mushrooms and capers in a white wine sauce. I like the Napoli. It tasted homey and it was a delicious red sauce. The sausage and mushroom was delicious. The gnocchi was okay though. It felt a bit dense and doughy to me (and if that's how gnocchi is supposed to be, then completely disregard my comment). It wasn't bad though. I just wish it was just a tad less dense but that's just my opinion. The Venezia was good. Clean white wine sauce. The shrimp was delicious and super plump. I did wish the white wine sauce had a little more flavor to it though. The fettuccine was great and you could tell it was home made. To top it off, we got the tiramisu which was absolutely delicious. The best thing about Piccante is all the homemade bread and pasta, which you notice right away when they bring over some complimentary rolls with a delicious tomato sauce. Great start to the meal. We went with the bruschetta for our appetizer. The bread was toasted just the right amount, and the tomato topping was so fresh. For our main courses, we tried two different pastas - Rome (rigatoni bolognese) and Piccante (pappardelle with pancetta, green pea, and spicy tomato sauce) - and both were very good. The texture of the homemade pasta was great, and both sauces were well-executed and full of flavor. All the food we had at Piccante was good. The space is a little tight, so you can be pretty close to your table neighbors and it can get a little loud depending on the crowd, but it's a solid choice for tasty homemade breads and pastas. read more

I totally disagree with other reviewers. I have been to Italy 3 times for weeks each time, but more imporatant my wife was Italian and an extraordinary cook. She had an index card file of her grandmother's recipes. My favorites however were the Marcella Hazan recipes from the Hazan Essential cookbook. I know my Italian food. Piccante has a very limited menu composed of very curious dishes none of which have any reason to exist. Yesterday I ordered fettuccini with eggplant in frustration thinking how could you go wrong? In fact, it was a bowl of slop with hardly any flavor. Mashed eggplant mixed with the pasta. The home made pasta here has no bite and no flavor. Rigatoni in Bolognese is also tasteless. I am extremely disappointed, my favorite dish the seafood risotto is just now terrible. I used to order this all the time and I have noticed the quality of the dish changed dramatically. I'll break it down: I don't know if there's a new chef or if management is plain just cutting corners to save a few dollars or both. The "salmon" is squared/cubed with a off-white color. The flesh of cooked salmon is PINK, not off white and certainly not squared. In the past the salmon was soft, pink as it should be and fresh; not some canned version or whatever they are passing off as fresh salmon......it is not. Every order of risotto has this weird "fish" I can't even call it salmon, unless it's canned. And it gives the dish a different taste that is not favorable. My second to last order of the risotto had large scallops, not baby scallops and the shrimp was not fresh. You could tell it was frozen. The saving grace of the dish was the risotto & broth, that is it and a shame. I used to rave to anyone that listened about the seafood risotto and would highly recommend. Now I tell my friends if they want authentic, fresh seafood risotto head to Park Slope. I will not name the establishment, but the seafood risotto I had there runs circles around Piccante. Everything fresh, salmon that you know is salmon & tasty. As I enjoyed that meal I was sadly reminded that this is now what's missing with regard to Piccante's current seafood risotto. A part of me almost doesn't want to write this review. I'm in love with this place and want to keep it under the radar, but more people need to know about Piccante! A couple of friends and I decided on this place for dinner on a Friday night. It's a cozy spot, definitely make a reservation. It has been years since I've been to Italy, but the flavors here reminded me of it. We ordered gnocchi, risotto, tomato and cream based pasta. I tried all of them and they were all so good! The portions were just right and all my friends finished their food. I had to pack mine to go, but it was my fault for taking up stomach space with bread. They give you complimentary bread, which is served warm with their own dipping sauce (might not be to everyone's taste). The only thing is that It can get a little loud in there with everyone talking, but it wasn't terrible. I am definitely going to be back. This review is for the delivery order I just placed this evening. I work as a manager in Hospitality; quality customer service is my business. Tonight I experienced unprofessionalism to a degree I never have in any delivery experience I've ever had. Let me preface this by saying I've ordered from here several times over the years. The food is generally good, and I've never had an issue. Until tonight. I get a call from the delivery driver who says he's at my door. I ask him to leave the food at the front door of my house, per my Seamless instructions. He hangs up, but then calls back about a minute later. He sounds frustrated. I repeat the instructions to leave the food at the front door, but this time he tells me he doesn't speak English. So I go to my front door, with my hungry 3 year old in toe, open it, and there's nobody standing there. I also have a large window by my front door, where I was sitting the entire time, and this driver was never at my house. I call the restaurant and tell them he's at the wrong address. A woman answers and says she'll call him. I wait. I hear nothing. For nearly 30 minutes, not a peep from anyone. I call back and this is where the next level of this delivery nightmare descends to. This woman keeps repeating the address to me, as though I don't know my own address. I keep reconfirming the address, and the cross streets. We're going back and forth. I tell her the bottom line is that the driver lied to them and he was never at my house. She tells me he's not lying, and that it's his job and he won't lie. Now here I stand, at my own front door, knowing full well that this delivery driver never came to my house. So if she's suggesting he's not lying, than who else would be? This woman literally refuses to admit any wrong doing on the part of the restaurant or the driver. She keeps swearing that he delivered food which he absolutely did not. She never once offers an apology. Instead she's reprimanding me for being upset, like a child. Finally she asks what do I want, a refund or a redelivery. I tell her I have a hungry toddler and wife and that they need to redeliver. She calls back again a short time later, to again DEFEND the lying driver. Swearing that he made delivery. Telling me he left it by my front door, which again, is an absolute lie. I am incensed at this point. Literally have never had a restaurant imply that I would be lying about a delivery order. She keeps saying that they'll attempt delivery again, but if happens again, she doesn't know what to say. Why would it happen again if the driver actually delivers to my address? I asked her if the driver took a photo as proof of delivery, which is standard. She says he will this time. How convenient. I'm done at this point. I immediately call Seamless to log a complaint. The agent was very understanding. She called the restaurant to find out what happened. She comes back a short time later and says that Piccante picked up the phone, but then HUNG UP ON HER. They literally hung up on the Seamless representative. You can't make this up! She is mortified. She issues a full refund, plus credit, with her deepest apologies. Now THAT is good customer service. The kicker? The woman from Piccante finally calls back in timely manner. Because she assumes I cancelled the order (I did not, Seamless did after they hung up on them). Still, no apologies, and no food, in sight. They've lost a loyal customer. What's amazing is how little they likely care about that fact. read more
