We went here for mother's day. It was the worst dining experience for the price that I have ever had. First of all, if you have young children, this is NOT a good place to go. There isn't even a changing table in the bathroom so I had to change my son's diaper on my lap in a chair in there. The server very curtly informed us first that we could only order off the brunch menu which is VERY limited. Don't even THINK of making substitutions. Makes me think everything's on a microwave plate all ready to go... The server then did not return for 25 minutes. When he did and we asked him for some bread, he told us it was "warming up". Guess what? No bread for another 25 minutes and another 3 reminders! We finally got some by asking a busboy. I ordered granola with milk, it came with yogurt. Oh, and apparently Italians eat granola with a fork, because I had to get up and ask the manager for a spoon to eat it with. The brunch food was lower than average. Even the granola tasted like it came out of a Trader Joe's cereal box. My other 2 kids got pasta and it was definitely microwaved! I spoke to the manager who gave us the kids' meals and the granola gratis after telling me how-oh-so-busy they were because it was mother's day and that they had so many more customers than usual! Give me a break-- there were empty tables at the restaurant and if you KNOW it's a special occasion perhaps consider having more people working on those days? Poor poor poor. Just had a delicious family holiday dinner. Appetizers and main courses all made with fresh ingredients and perfectly prepared. Our server, Lisa, was fabulous; attentive to all our requests and very well informed on all of the menu items. Lisa made us feel special even among the many full tables of holiday season diners. I'd been to a Southern California Piatti before, and I like this Mill Valley restaurant far better. It's got a beautiful view, nice ambiance and the crispy skin chicken meal with Swiss chard that I had was excellent. Wait staff were very attentive and, with a reservation or on a week night, you can request a table away from the high noise level of their popular bar area. read more

I've gone to Piatti on three different occasions. The first and second time I was dining with some colleagues of mine during luncheon stops on the way back north from business in San Francisco. The third time I was coerced into stopping in by my mother when we were driving to San Francisco for an opera performance in the city, as she claims to love another Piatti in southern California. Frankly, all three experiences at this location were severely underwhelming. Service was substandard, food (according to my mother) was nothing compared to what she was accustomed to in SoCal (greasy and oily beyond belief, here, folks), and the floor manager who, on all three occasions, took it upon himself to converse with every single table in the restaurant, whether he was welcome or not, just sent my blood pressure through the roof! Typically diners come into a restaurant not to meet a manager but expect to be left to a quiet experience among colleagues, friends, family. Less is more! And, when service is lacking, food quality is suffering, and a majority of the service staff is hanging around and chatting as if they are in a college or high school cafeteria (volumes included), the last thing I want to do is make conversation with a manager (reeking of cigarette smoke, no less!) who obviously has other priorities which are being completely overlooked! And, the larger irony is my mother's entree came out completely cold, our server (who reeked just of cigarettes just as much if not more than the manager) seemed completely unconcerned by this fact, she had the "cook slap it over the fire some more" for her, the entree came back out hot and totally disheveled, greens wilted, with not so much as a simple apology from the server or kitchen for the oversight. What struck me as unexpectedly comical was not even an apology or actually "welcomed" visit from the the chatty manager followed. Nothing whatsoever was done for us to compensate for the poor experience. Is someone missing some steps from the finer points of the customer service handbook? Never again will I go back. Like the other posts reveal, there are much better ways to spend your money in Mill Valley and Marin, especially if you would like good food, service, and peace and quiet to be part of what you pay for. read more

Just finishing watching an episode of Restaurant Stakeout and was inspired to write a review about my recent experience at Piatti. Long story short, was working with the Event Manager to plan a gathering in the small private room on a weekday. The transaction was very business like - not a lot of personal touch. Basically, here's the event menu, here's our policy, if you like it, we're good to go. Since I'm a busy career mom, the quick and dirty approach worked for me. Unfortunately due to a planned low turnout, we cancel the event 48 hours in and decided to just meet at the bar. Throughout the process, there was no personal touch, or connection, and when cancel, the response was 'okay' 'can't reserve the bar area for you, you'll just have to come in and see what's available'. Since a small event would bring in at least $1,000+, it wouldn't have been nice if the Event Manager said, "It's unfortunate that things didn't work out but hopefully you'll continue to think of us the next time you plan your event". So the night of the event comes along and what I had expected to be a turnout of less than 10 people, turned out to be at least 20 of us (we're a not for profit social club). When we arrived and explain ourselves to the hostess, she had a very indifferent attitude and couldn't care less to try to seat us or make arrangements. We asked her about the various empty pockets of table in the area and she responded that we could not use them because the restaurant had reservations (yup that's it, no more words after that) ( and umm......okay, so they're still making it difficult for what would be at least a several hundred dollar tab). Fortunately, at the same time, my husband was talking to the bartender who was super nice and helpful. The bartended totally empathize and understand and kept telling us he would help us make it work. (keeping in mind he was working like a dog non-stop during this period, constantly moving and serving all the customers at the bar which was busy) (and the hostess is still standing around as dinner time had yet to start and a lot of the tables were still empty as I mentioned earlier). As the bar area cleared up, he cleared the counter immediately so that we could all stand comfortable and made sure we had enough drinks & pizza (which is $$$ for the restaurant). Throughout the evening, he kept serving us pizza and drink, and even asked me if we were interested in serving deserts and that he'll inquire with the kitchen if this is something they could accommodate. What a sweetheart and of course I said YES (which again, is more $$$ for the restaurant). My conclusion: if it wasn't for the bartender, it would have been a crap night and we probably would have had to scramble to find another restaurant that could accommodate us at that moment. The only reason we kept it at Piatti was because I communicated it the club and couldn't change the location last minute. As a club, I guess I should have known why this restaurant isn't on our list of usual restaurants to go to. And after this experience, it won't make the list nor would I organize any personal venues here. (My best friend is planning a wedding and although we love the food and view at Piatti, after this experience, she axed it off her places to consider). PS. My husband and I frequent customer of Piatti, this is our first time we tried to organize a club night out here. Normally, I would give at least 4 to 5 stars but due to poor customer service, they'll get 2 stars and that's 1 star for the server and 1 star because I like the food. PPS. We have been going to Piatti for over three years and have enjoyed excellent food in a great location with outstanding service until this past weekend during late afternoon on Feb 21st. While enjoying the dinner at the bar, we saw a party of three sitting outside on the patio also enjoying dinner. However, these people also had two small dogs in their laps and proceeded to share their entire meal with the dogs, allowing them to lick their plates clean of pasta sauce on the table, hand feeding them pizza and allowing them to lap water out of their glasses. Many people in the bar were shocked at this spectacle and even more astonished that it continued for over 30 minutes. We brought this to the attention of the on-site manager who while expressing somewhat disgust, did nothing to stop this activity. He did not discuss it with the responsible party and even wished them well on their way out of the door. This is a health code violation at the very least. Servers now have to touch those plates and someone else will subsequently eat off of them. Huge disappointment from a great spot over the years read more

Seems to be going downhill Rating 2.5 stars after meal tonight. The Good: 1. Service is usually excellent (although they have a major problem serving food that is decreasing in quality). 2. The garlic prawns app and caesar salad are consistently wonderful. 3. There is a deck on the lagoon that's nice if it's warm and sunny. The view faces west - the hills of Mill Valley not the actual bay facing SF. The Seriously Bad: 1. The food's been going downhill from about 2 yrs ago. New chef? The steak (NY strip) that we had tonight was completely flavorless. NOBODY that tasted this would have enjoyed it. Did anyone taste it? The sauce - supposedly green peppercorn was flavorless too. It was a job to eat it - so we didn't. Everything else on the plate was good - the broccoli had a wonderful horseradish flavor, the potatoes and these wonderful little onion fritters were tasty, but we left the steak uneaten in a heap on the plate. That's how bad - more trouble to chew it than it was worth. 2. They are becoming less accommodating in the kitchen. They won't split anything - even for a fee. The chef who cooks with no flavor refuses to split anything. Bad sign when the food gets worse and customer service does too. 3. The music is loud and techno-elevator. It's just weird - maybe it's a brainwashing thing. It even blares on the outside deck. If you ask, they usually turn it down and neighboring tables usually agree that it's annoying them too. Unfortunately, this is a bit of a local watering hole that we can't avoid. Will repost if anything improves. But if you are in Marin and want a steak (or decent meal) - shoot for El Paseo (in Mill Valley) if you have a little extra money and want an amazing meal or Buckeye Roadhouse/Bungalow 44 before you come here. read more

I, like every Marin-ite, have driven past Piatti a million times and thought, "hm, I wonder how that place is." Finally gave it a try a few weeks ago, and I was sort of underwhelmed. The interior, space, view - all great. The view really is spectacular. But I found the food a little boring. It is clearly a premium location and therefore on the slightly expensive side, but the food was not worth the extra dough in my opinion. Its been a while since I've last eaten here. I remember having a bad experience the last time but I thought they might have improved. Its gotten worse. Slow slow slow. Took the waiter twenty minutes to talk to us. Half hour later the salad still hadn't arrived. Tried to flag two waiters down but neither seemed to show interest. How packed were they? they weren't. Its easy to give good service and hard to give bad service, yet piattis finds a way. Ten years in the restaurant biz I could run circles around every employee there. I am so disappointed in Piatti's. I keep going back thinking the food will improve but now I know it is only getting worse. Went for lunch with some friends from out of town as the views are nice but that is the only reason I would ever return. I ordered a cup of minestrone and fried calamari...the soup was so salty I almost gagged. The fried calamari was so bland and soggy, then I dipped it in their sauce...it was awful! Their aioli sauce was even more bland..my friends ordered Bloody Mary's that were so spicy they could not drink them. I was really upset that I had taken my out of town "foodie" friends there. Setting is pretty, but food is unpredictable -- sometimes very good, sometimes poor. The most significant problem is the service. Often very slow, almost always inattentive. Waiters disappear and never reappear. No one checks to see if customer has any requests/complaints. And good luck getting the check. Even the hostess has a habit of being MIA. One saving grace: Good happy hour pizza and discounted drinks. read more

The first time I visited this restaurant a couple of years ago, I was with my two young teenage daughters and two of their friends. It was 8.30, the restaurant was almost empty and we were completely ignored by the host. After waiting for over 10 minutes, the bar tender came over and seated us. The girls just wanted a light snack which obviously displeased the waitress and the service was so unpleasant we left and went to Piazza D'Angelo in Mill Valley where we had a totally opposite experience. I returned to Piatti recently with a group of 6 friends (their choice!) We had a bottle of wine with us that was a very limited release and certainly not on their wine list. We also bought 2 relatively expensive bottles of wine off their list. They refused to waive corkage on the bottle be brought and after spending over $500 on food that was just OK at best, once again I did not feel welcome. Needless to say I will not be returning to Piatti under any circumstances. read more

Very limited menu. Pizza's dough was soggy but topping was good. Chopped Salad was short of seasoning and promised Olives, Roasted Peppers, Artichokes were missing. I had not been here in several years as the food and service had declined. I took a client here about a month ago for lunch; service and food were fine. My husband and I decided to try Piatti again for dinner. The restaurant and our server were having a very off night. It appears that this was an exception given the other reviews, but we will not be back. We also got the distinct impression that the restaurant's policy is to turn the tables over quickly. We had 6:30 reservations and several couples came in at the same time we did. We waited about 20 minutes after we were seated. Fortunately the hostess noticed we did not have water or cocktails so she apologized and took our drink orders. That was good service. The server arrived and was flustered, she apologized for the delay. About four tables were seated at the same time ours was so maybe there was too much activity. Here were the real problems: ---the server tried to take our entree orders before we were ready. She said "we will hold them until you are ready". The hostess took our appetizer orders because our server had not appeared ---my husband ordered a small pizza which arrived with our entrees. Not good. Our server said she tried to slow down the kitchen but it was too late. ---the spinach in my entree was gritty. The entree cost was removed from our bill. ---I ordered a glass of red wine with dessert that was flat; clearly it had been open for a while. ---our server brought the check while we were finishing dessert. tacky! Piatti appears to have plenty of tourist and local traffic which is good. But, a better Italian meal and service in Marin can be found elsewhere. read more

This is my very favorite establishment to stuff my yapper. I have always experienced excellent service by the waitstaff and the food was always great too. Recently, my date and I hit up Piatti for dinner before we walked the Golden Gate. I made reservations on Open Table, and requested waterfront dining, they accommodated my request. Our server, Jarrett, was friendly, knowledgeable and never let our drinks empty. We never had to ask for a thing. The dipping oil and bread is fantastic. As for the main menu, there were many items to choose from, and they are celebrating heirloom tomato season. The heirloom caprese salad was fresh, and was the best caprese salad I've ever consumed. In a nutshell, as follows: firm, chunks of heirloom tomatoes (very fragrant), sea salt, mozzarella fresca and torn basil, drizzled with a sweet balsamic vinegar. It all married very well. The squash potato gnocchi was succulent, not overly salted and was tossed in olive oil. My dish, the ravioli with lemon cream sauce was to die for. The dessert menu has changed, but for the better. I was too full to have anything, but they do offer a peach tart that I hear many great things about. All in all, an excellent experience. Of course I'll be returning. read more

16 family members celebrated my wife's birthday at Piatti last week and couldn't be happier with the event. We used one of their private rooms and Kristin assisted us with the menu, seating configuration and wine selection prior to the event. When we arrived, we were taken care of by Jarrett and Casey and their service was friendly and professional. Appetizers, cocktails and entrees were all provided promptly they did a great job anticipating the needs of the attendees. When it came time for the cake, it was quickly cut and distributed. We will not hesitate to use Piatti as a venue for future celebrations and events. read more

Piatti is one of Marin's top Italian restaurants. You have a view of the water out back from nearly every seat in the house, and the back patio is a beautiful setting for lunch. Don't be fooled by the classy decor inside. Although this is a great romantic setting for a date, the ownership is very kind and open to big parties for having as much fun as they like. I highly recommend the linguini and clams here, they are to die for. And if you are a fan of cioppino, don't hesitate! It's the best! read more

I haven't dine in this restaurant for many months. My client request this restaurant for our business lunch. I was very impressed with the lunch menu. The blue lake beans were absolutely cooked to perfection. I was so impressed I took another client to lunch with a similar experience. However this evening I ordered the blue lake beans that were not coated, greasy and not edible. I sent them back to the kitchen who prepared them the same way. Aweful I told the hostess that these were not prepared like the ones in the lunch menu. Her response "Well I guess you will have to come by ONLY for lunch. Piatti! When will you return back to your old self? The environment is dark and dreary, the service was not helpful at all, and the food was horrible. Dim Lighting guides you to the bar. You sit patiently waiting for a greeting, which happens 10mins. after you have sat. When you pose the question of I am deciding between this and this what do you think? And you are hit with an answer of they are both great! Why don't you combine both of them... you are left with a bit of a confused but also What Hell are you talking about kind of feeling. Last time I checked you can't fuse a grilled shrimp with a battered calamari dish... and even if this odd pair could be done.. You would definitely be billed much more - and let me say. You don't need the dish to be any more expensive then it already is. I started with bourbon buzz... this drink was really nothing special - just a smokey, citrus odd concoction. After such great help with my dish I decided to go with the calamari. Man did I go wrong. The dish was horrible. No garnish, The batter was falling off and the garlic aioli was the generic crap you get anywhere. Garlic.. O garlic where are you? $22 later, I was dissatisfied, my wallet poorer, and a sour taste in my mouth; all came with me as I left the dark, sad place. Local Italian with mostly mediocre food. Their Caesar and oreciette with broccoli rabe and chili flakes are good but sometimes their pastas tend to have too much olive oil. They also have pizza. Bread dip is high-octane garlic so be careful if you're on a date. If you're ever there on a Monday night, the bartender is very friendly. Unhappy with the selection of champagnes by the glass, I asked her for a suggestion. She made me a very cool champagne cocktail that's not normally on the bar menu. I went there for happy hour with my husband and mother-in-law. It was busy but we were seated right away. The happy hour menu is limited; two pizzas, garlic fries, olives, red or white wine, and cocktails. We all ordered the happy hour red, which was pretty good for $4. We also ordered 2 pizzas for$5 each; a margarita and a pepperoni. They were both delicious (and larger than we expected) but the pepperoni was much cheesier and saucier. If I was not a vegetarian I would have definitely gone for the pepperoni, but the margarita was flavorful despite the sparse appearance. I cannot vouch for the flavor of the pepperoni pizza, but my family largely ignored the margarita and devoured the pepperoni so I'm thinking it was pretty yummy. I will be back here for sure. The dinner menu looked good, I would like to try some of their pastas. read more

This restaurant was a huge disappointment, first in accommodating anybody in a wheel chair and the lack of professionalism from its hostesses. We had made reservations ahead of time, and ended up sitting near an aisle that was a freeway for all its servants bumping into us. When asked if we can move to another location initially, the hostess was very curt and let us know that the rest of the tables where all reserved. Mind you this was around 5pm, and they where probably less than six people having a meal. Its unknown the reasoning behind our assign seating...Regardless, this issue could've been managed better. Usually the food is pretty good from our past experiences, but tonight it seemed very salty, and under-cook with sporadic service from its staff. Being a special occasion, this place was a big let down from the start, and ended in exploring other alternatives next time to appreciate the value of a good meal. read more

We stopped here after our reservation at another place was cancelled unexpectedly. It was a pleasant surprise just a couple blocks from our hotel. The stand outs were the Goat cheese app, Spinach-Ricotta Ravioli and grilled pork chop. We also ordered the half chicken which was pretty good but over cooked. Nice place we'd try again. read more

One of the better Marin Italian places imo. No Italian food comes close to the food found in Italy, that's for sure. Love their pomegranate ginger martini. Delish! Friday night is not a night to go with friends and expect to have decent service and being able to carry on a conversation. Bar order got screwed up twice, the appetizers we were presented with a CUP of fried calamari. We had to order 3 more since the portion which use to be in a large soup bowl, and was of sufficient size to have two people share the portion were now small individual servings at the old price. . It seems that all the portions had been reduced by at least 25% from the last time, including the salads and my clam linguine or perhaps the Piatti that we go to in Montecito had more for your money. We usually visit that one 7 or 8 or times a year, and hadn't been to this location for about 10 years. All in all, I wasn't impressed at this location, or maybe Montecito is way better. There were having a few "wild" parties at the bar area, and in fact one group of 25 year old women must have been celebrating either a divorce or a engagement, because they could be heard and seen in the whole restaurant, they were so loud that our waiter even apologized for the noise and screaming they were doing. ( one of them even got up on the bar) which is not what you would see in this kind of a restaurant ( usually reserved for Hussongs etc) For the money spent, the service and food was mediocre, which is sad since their other locations are way better.....Just need to find another place in Marin that serves latter than 9 PM.... read more

The only reason this place gets a 4 is that their Eggs Benedict were not quite up to snuff and that the wine is a bit low in the glasses (the house Chard by the way is GREAT!). There is a cozy atmosphere here. Staff is very attentive and friendly, especially the fantastic waiter we have had the pleasure of having the last two visits. He works both at Piatti's and at Buckeye he informed us and we can tell why he is in demand. The girl at the pizza oven sure knows her stuff and food, generally, is great! Have driven by for years and finally decided to have brunch last Sunday. Wow!! Been missing out. First off, the ambiance and decor is beautiful. We sat on the deck that overlooks the water. Was a bit chilly but they took care of us. Heat Lamps and Blankets, yes, I said blankets. The manager made sure we were as comfortable as could be. We had the pork/ricotta meatball for starters and they are kick ass!! Hubby had risotto: good, but could've used more salt and a pork product for extra flavor. I had the polenta, spinach, egg, tomato dish which was A-MAZ-ING!! We liked the venue, food and overall experience so much that when we were having a friends dinner for 10, I recommended Piatti. Now to the dinner. We had reso's for 5:30 but found out they had happy hour so we moved it to 6. Had such a good time at happy hour we decided to move our reso's to 6:30. The hostesses were so accommodating, it was np. We got the calamari for the table. It was just ok. The calamari had a strong overpowering flavor that made the breading an afterthought. I got the strawberry/walnut/parm cheese salad which was delicious! Hub got the filet (had crusted espresso) and he said it was great. I had the fetachini with prawns (just meh, could've used more flavor), but many around me got the spaghetti with pork/ricotta meatballs and it was spot on wonderful. The sauce was bursting flavorful. I really wanted to send my meal back and get the spaghetti dish but didn't want to be the high maintenance chick at the table, so I did not. We then got 3 desserts: a Lemon custard dish (can't remember the exact name), the tiramisu, and hazelnut cheesecake. The lemon dessert was so lemony at first that it made my mouth water like crazy. After taking a few more bites (letting your mouth get used to the lemon), it was amazing. The tiramisu was good but the winner of the night for desserts was the hazelnut cheesecake!!
