I love this place they have a lot of games that I couldnt find anywhere else. The people are nice and dont mind when your just in there to browse they are always willing to help me look for a game and seem really fair priced. For everyone who thinks its more expensive isnt really appreciating what it is they do. Which is making sure the items you buy have been tested and cleaned before being sold. This is one of those places you wont miss til its gone like comic book stores and old fashion joke shops. Even if they are more expensive which they are not I would rather see my money go to people and places like this. This place is pretty awesome.. I met one of the workers ((whom i'm guessing is the owner)) Eric who was a great help to me. Not only is he knowledgeable in games but his customer service skills is the best I've seen in a game store. Unlike Gamestop, he know's his things and gives far better pricing on games and his systems then Gamestop. Test out a game you want to buy? They'll let you do it, has a nice home feel to it where you know the staff will pay attention to you and answer your questions instead of rushing you out. Best place to go! They have old 8bit nintendo games, Sega Dreamcast, Wii, Ps2, Sega, Super Nintendo, N64, and a bunch of handheld systems as well. This place is cool because it has old and new games, unlike Game Stop, so if you want a game for your old console you dont have to order it from eBay and pay for shipping. We came in here because my brother wanted a few games for his N64, and it was cool because I just looked through the Wii and Gamecube games while he did that. Also, it's not very expensive, so you can come in here with $10 and get atleast 1-2 games. read more

I'm so glad there's a spot that deals with older systems and older games instead of ONLY the newest stuff. There's still a lot of older games that I've been looking for, and this store actually carries some of them. It's sort of like the last version of Matt's Game Exchange but a lot more professional and serious. (And I'm not talking about the garage or shack versions of Matt's Game Exchange either! LOL.) But I did see a lot of games that were great. Also, they apparently let you test out games before you buy them. You can also pay to play games on their state-of-the-art gaming chairs with flatscreen tv's. There were a bunch of people hanging out and playing games at those chairs. They also have a small arcade and 1 of those machines has a whole bunch of 80s arcade games built into it. Don't get me wrong, it's not just a lot of the old school games such as Genesis or Nintendo64, but they also have Xbox360 and PS3 and just about everything else, so there's a bit of everything for anybody who likes games. It's a pretty fun place and I'm glad that there's a place like it in Concord finally. read more

By far the very best store for retro games in the Bay Area. Fantastic selection, arcade, great staff and most importantly great prices and honesty! If they don't happen to have what you're looking for they will do everything they can to get it, to include putting you on a call list. Believe me they do call you....I've used it. I was skeptical at first. I had been to stores that boasted that they were an everything game store(new games, retro, etc.). I stopped by the store best on a friend saying it was legit. He was right, they are one of the best I have seen, the owner is an avid fan of games and it shows. I brought in a bunch of old games that I knew I would not play anymore and am pretty sure I would not get a better price anywhere else, definitely not gamestop! I now keep a credit at the store in case anything new comes out that I might want I can reserve it through them. Highly recommend this store to anyone who likes games. This not a standard Game Stop type place. The shop is very game player centric (especially those who like the odd titles, imports, etc) They in many cases may not have the new release or popular title but if it is hard to find older like Nintendo (classic versions) they more than likely will have it or will help to find a way to get it. They are big on classic titles for the older systems but still really cool if you are not a gamer and will go over the positives/negatives about items both in and not in the store. This place is like GameStop on steroids! Unlike GameStop which only features modern games, this place goes all the way back to the pong home controller. Not only do they sell old games, but sell old consoles too! Not only that, but they also have a mini arcade in the back. The arcade has pinball and arcade machines. I went to Phoenix Games to fulfill a missing part of my childhood and purchase an N64. The staff was friendly and helpful as I described the kind of games I was interested in (platformers). The games they helped me select were fun and challenging, except for one game, which is why they get a four star rather than a five star. This game is DK64. For all intents and purposes a great game except for one thing: Beaver Bother. This minigame made me want to put my controller and then my fist through my TV. For those unaware, Beaver Bother is a retarded luck minigame with no strategy. Essentially you're a crocodile and you have to herd beavers into a hole in a circular room. Sounds easy, right? Fuck no, it isn't. Instead of herding minigames like in the Legend of Zelda series, where the things just avoid you and run whichever way you point them, these Beavers seem to have degrees in Being Difficult from the Troll Academy of Fuck You; it's like they know you can't fucking chomp them so as you bark, they call you on your shit and just fucking run some other direction, knowing they'll be fine. The game gives you 60 seconds to get 12 beavers into a hole, and this would be fine if it didn't take upwards of 10 seconds to get a single fucking beaver into that hole, that is if they don't seem to be running into an invisible wall at the edge of it and running in place. Occasionally, you can burn as much as 40 seconds of that 60 and get maybe two beavers in, if that. I just want to pull a gun and force them in, but sadly that's not an option. The worst part is that unlike other herding games, where the creatures are avoiding you (the whole mechanic of herding games), these things like to run directly at you, blocking your path and making you unable tomove. Fuck these beavers and fuck Donkey Kong 64. I hold Phoenix Games responsible in not warning me about this. It's a fine game otherwise, until you realize you can't beat it 100% without spending hours on this minigame (which appears multiple times). I'm being overdramatic, I get it. It's why this place gets four stars and will get a five star when I calm down. Until then, the staff were sadists for telling me this would be a game I could play casually and not devote time to as I attempt to get myself through college. read more

First stop for all gaming needs. They are great! Almost everyone who walks in the store is known by name (lots of regulars). When selling games back they give more than games top. Saw someone go in yesterday and wasn't sure about a DS game. They pulled out a DS for the customer to try it out right there in the store. They encourage you to bring handheld systems to the store when buying and try things out (at least used...not sure about new). My daughter loved playing games right in the store and one of these days I will actually stay and play some pinball games. Neat place and great people working there! read more

This is the store I've been waiting for, and if you like video games, and by video games I'm talking from retro to current. That's right, it's not some video game store that only sells current games. The crown gem of this store is it's huge library of retro games and retro consoles in a clean store that's outlay is like being in a GAMESTOP(GAMESTOP is a registered company). This a total review of Phoenix Games as I've been a customer for a number of years. I honestly have never found a store I have enjoyed or looked forward to visiting more than Phoenix. This has become my favorite game store and the service here is top notch. Chris, Sean and the staff are great people and true gamers, they can help you with whatever needs you may have in this store. This store is responsive to any questions and inquiries as well; they even call you when a game you're after comes in! My Dreamcast collection has flourished thanks to this place as well. It's really nice to have a used game store in the area. The selection's not stellar, and they charge 75 cents to play their pinball machines which seems steep. If your an original arcade player kid. You know the kid that loves to go to the laundry mat or the local 7-11, or if your lucky an arcade...you will love this place. It has the atmosphere of an arcade and the pinball machines are awesome. The prices are iffy on games, when I was a kid pinball machines were just a quarter, there not here (almost a dollar). I drove over 20 miles to go to Phoenix Games (recommended by our local GameStop when they did not have what I needed). I arrived, opened the door and at least 5 employees in black polo shirts were standing around the counter. I was told "We are Closed, three times in succession by the loitering staff. If they are closed, why is the door open? Don't know. All I know is that it isn't convienent to get to Phoenix Games, and based on my first experience, it will be my last. I love this place! I got my GameCube controller and wii sensor bar from them so I can play Mario Sunshine. Also picked up Pikmin for GameCube. :~) I like that they are open from 10-9 which is most of the day. Staff are pretty cool too! Overall this place is a realllly good retro game store, the pros are they get inventory in at a really fast pace , I called one day asking if they had MK2 on snes and they said sorry we dont at the moment and always ask if you want to be put on a waiting list but I declined because its not such a hard game to find , the very next day I was driving by and decided to stop in and just browse and they had gotten two copies of MK2 in on the shelf which was a pleasant surprise, another pro is their games they sell are alwayyys fairly priced I have never seen a game priced higher than what the normal prices go for on ebay so when people review saying things are priced too high I think they just do not understand these old school games go up in value each year they get older. The only con is just from my personal experience and may not be a thing that happens often , I brought in a mint mario party and mint majoras mask gold hologram cartriges for n64 which normally anywhere you look would sell for 80 bucks for both easily and I was hoping for store credit and I only was offered 24 dollars for the two in store credit , I thought it was really low even for store credit I was even fine with them making double the price off me for 40 bucks but luckily I sold them the next day on craigslist for 80. Other than the taking in games I always have a pleasant experience here. I had bought a generic n64 power plug and something went wrong with it from the manufacturer not the store and the owner or manager with longer hair I am not sure but he gave me store credit and even gave me a discount on something I wanted to purchase for the inconvenience I was very impressed and makes me want to support this place even more now compared to going somewhere else. read more

I signed up for yelp just to write this review b/c people need to know of this store's shitiness. I wish I could give less than one star, this place is so dishonest and uncustomer-friendly. I wanted a genuine Nintendo 64 controller and since they only had 3rd party controllers, I was put on the wait list. A few weeks later I finally got a call saying they had one. I drive there and buy the controller for about $21 all told. When I get home and removed the plastic to test it out, I find that the Z-button is broken, the D-pad is unresponsive and the joystick had been replaced with a very stiff and uncomfortable 3rd party joystick. So the next day, I go back and try to return it, but they point out the bottom of the receipt states they do not do returns and can only offer store credit. They did not tell me this before I bought the product and clearly do their best to hide this when they sell products. What am I gonna do with store credit to a place that lies and sells broken products? It wouldn't be a big deal if I wasn't strapped for cash but of course I am. What kind of store doesn't offer refunds on broken products? I've never had a worse shopping experience in my life. Do NOT go here if you are looking for quality retro video game products read more

i love this store as you walk in u see they have all formats from wall to wall the games are priced great and the employees are smart and helpful they have new games old games the whole 9 yards they can repair broken games cds and movies for only 4 bucks its a steal also they have pinball machines with some great titles such as cactus canyon and midevil madness they have 8-9 pinball machines in front they have a pac man multicade neo geo and a original mario bros machine the customer request list is great if they dont have a game that you are looking for they can put u on a list and they will call u wen it comes in u dont have to even buy it but they will let u no its there and its free they have gamestations set up where u can test games before you buy them or for pay to play the store is great it is the only store i will shop at they are smart nice and the prices are great if u are in the area u should stop by its a really great store 100% read more
