I first came to Phoenix Inn a few years ago because Savoy Kitchen was closed. Tried their Hainan Chicken and tried one of their boba drinks called the Multifruit Tapioca...that drink was sheer awesomeness! Since then, I drive all the way out to Alhambra from LAX for a few reason...Savoy Kitchen, $15 foot massages (sadly, no happy endings), and Phoenix Dessert (HAPPY ENDINGS!!!). Multifruit Tapioca - this drink is by far the most complex boba drink I've ever had. It's crazy good...comprised of tiny bits of boba and coconut flakes at the bottom with jelly floating on the top...goes down smooth, not too much stuff to chew on and has a light sweet coconutty taste to it. It's not overpowering and is definitely refreshing on warm day. I wouldn't order the taro tapioca drink though...it actually is different from the tapioca drinks out there made with the purple powder...it's made with real pieces of taro root...kinda bland IMO. I also ordered the black sticky rice with young coconut...a fantastic dessert that looks crazy sweet but isn't. According to my friend the durian dessert is the star here. And true to her words, I must agree. I forget the cost, maybe about $5? Went 30 minutes before closing, but the doors were locked. Worker came up to the door and I assumed she would open the door and either let me in, or tell me something like "sorry but we're closed early." Or maybe anything else that would have been reasonable. Instead, she literally just walked up to flip the "OPEN" sign to "CLOSED" and then walked away. And since this place opens hella late til like 1-2AM (not too sure) my friends and I like to hit this spot up when we're craving sweets or just something to drink, such as the amzing Mixed Fruit Drink. The Mixed Fruit drink has a variety of fruits, tapioca, and coconut milk-- it never fails to disappoint; however, you need to tell the cashier that you don't want too much ice because they tend to fill your cups filled with ice-- which makes you get less of the coconut milk tea or whateverit'scalled. Oh, and the snacks here are pretty delicious-- such as the pecan custard. OMG. DELICIOUS, and definitely worth it. The other Asian desserts too are good as well, such as the mochi wrapped mango(?) All their deserts are GOOD and YUMMY, we love all the sweets there. But I think is the service make this location better than others. I went picked up some desert custards for a party yesterday, I asked the lady if the sweets will be OK to stay in the hot weather for 2 hours? She said it might not be a good idea, but she will packed it with ice, so my friends can enjoy the ice cold custards later. I am so surprised that she would offer the ice pack, it can be just a box of custards, and she showed that she cares about her customers, about her job. I was really impressed by it. Phoenix restaurant, which serves savory dishes, is next door to Phoenix Dessert. When I went there, I ordered the black sesame pudding, the macau tiramisu, the mango pudding, and the fresh fruit tapioca drink. The sesame pudding was good but did not blow me away. The macau tiramisu, however, was superb. It was light and fluffy yet full of flavor. The mango pudding was very good too; better than the mango pudding that's offered at dim sum places. And lastly, the tapioca drink is phenomenal. Its a blend of tapioca balls, diced fresh fruit (watermelon, jack fruit, etc) and a lactose-based liquid (diluted coconut milk, perhaps?). This is such a fun spot to be at. If only they had these near my city. I came here late one night looking for a snack and everything they had hit the spot. I try to come here every time I go to SoCal to eat this, but after eating it a few times, I realized that 90% of this is just durian. I think it's like $4/$5 something for a box for 3 rolls, so it's not exactly the cheapest dessert for something that's made with 90% dessert. I could settle with buying frozen durian and waiting for it to defrost in the future. But if you're ever craving durian and don't feel like doing all that work, this is the dessert for you. I've often wondered where to get Chinese desserts. One day I was in Alhambra milling around after dining on dim sum at Elite Restaurant. Then it occurred to me that Phoenix Inn has desserts and they are within walking distance. So, I gather a few other foodies to join me for dessert. When we arrived, the surprise was finding Phoenix Desserts next door. What a convenience! We didn't have to wait to get seated in the main restaurant. Phoenix Desserts has every comfort and convenience without the hassle of waiting in line to be seated. Thank goodness, because the restaurant was packed with customers. We placed our orders and found a seat outside. The variety pack of Chinese mochi stuffed with sweet red bean was so fresh and tasty. The servers cut it up into pieces for sharing. How nice of them. I especially loved the variety pack of those delectable fruity creams like Mango, Taro, and Red Bean and Green Tea. These are the same silky and creamy desserts that I usually order at the dim sum restaurants. It was nice to see them at Phoenix Desserts ready for purchase. Then I ordered the sweet Three Bean dessert just to try it out. It's delicately sweet and filling. I like this too. A typical dessert staple is the mango shaved ice with sweetened condensed milk. It was actually quite nice to eat after dining on lots of dim sum. What I like about Phoenix Desserts is the convenience, but what I really like about this establishment are the many varieties of non-bakery desserts and teas that you can choose from.
