A friend and I visited Pho Vans for a Saturday night dinner adventure. It wasn't as busy as I would have expected for a Saturday but I had made a reservation anyway just in case. Other than the service being incredibly slow, I believe we waited 45 minutes just to get our appetizers, the servers were very kind and accommodating. The food when we did get it was very tasty indeed! We ordered many different things and didn't dislike a single thing. Everything was very fresh and well seasoned. I have to especially recommend the pork spring rolls and the tarro smoothie! Oh my goodness that smoothie! The ambience was also very nice and modern. I think it would be a great date spot. They wouldn't dream of kicking you out early to turn the table for the next sitting. Try this exciting spot and enjoy a delicious trip to Vietnam!

We've been coming here since they opened this location. Now we have two little ones that are quickly becoming pho vans fans!

My wife and I come here pretty regularly and it ALWAYS hits the spot. We mainly get the pho and spring rolls and we have never had a bad experience. Staff is always incredibly friendly and provides the best service. We brought family here from out of town and they were very impressed with the food and can't wait to come back the next time they visit.

This is a welcome addition to the restaurants in Schenectady/Rotterdam. Pho Van's is also the second restaurant in the area created by the proprietors of Van's (307 Central Avenue, Albany). As its name implies, this restaurant focuses on pho (pronounced "fuh"), a Vietnamese rice noodle soup. I didn't go for the usual this time, but I did have appetizers to go. The first was Cha Gio Chien (Fried Pork & Shrimp Spring Rolls - 4 per order). The filling of the spring rolls is comprised of minced pork, shrimp, carrots, onions, and rice vermicelli which is then wrapped in rice paper and deep fried. The rolls are served with lettuce, mint, and cucumber. My order also came with quick pickled carrots and radish. The sauce is nuoc mam - fish sauce, water, sugar, and citrus. I think the best way to eat these spring rolls is to wrap one in a torn piece of lettuce with your fresh and pickled veg, dip it in sauce, devour. The second was Goi Dau Khuon (Tofu Salad). The menu describes it as "sliced fried tofu, cabbage, basil, carrots, scallions, and crushed peanuts served with nuoc mam chai sauce (vegetarian sauce)." Fried tofu might not sound appetizing but it is palatable. It has that satisfying texture of a French fry - crunchy outside/soft inside. If you are familiar with Japanese Agedashi Dofu, the preparation of the tofu will be familiar, just flatter. The fried tofu was served on a mound (think small hill) of finely shredded cabbage and various vegetables. Interestingly, the peanuts were placed in a small container which were then placed inside the take-out box. Nice touch, if you happen to have a nut allergy or dislike peanuts. Also, to me, there's a hint of liquid smoke to the vegetarian nuoc mam chai...and a lot of dissolved sugar. Although these were ordered off the appetizer menu, about $10 and $12 dollars respectively, the portion sizes were big. In fact, I could only eat one appetizer for dinner. Both dishes were done very well. GBD (golden, brown, delicious) doneness for the fried items, not sodden with oil. The fresh and pickled vegetables served to lighten the meal and the nuoc mam gave bright, sweet acidity to the dishes. Vietnamese food, c'mon, Anthony Bourdain craved this stuff. I hope this restaurant stays around a while.

Love this spot. Always went to Albany location but this is closer and has parking lot which is a plus. Smaller menu but has all the favorites. My husband and I both had Phó and it was the perfect dish for a cold night. Service was quick and owner was super nice. Cute place inside and modern. Will be back!

My boyfriend and I came here for Valentine's day dinner and it was amazing. The service was great and inside was very clean. We both ordered the chin pho which was absolutely delicious!! Definitely recommend this place if you're craving some vietnamese cuisine!!

Second time at this location and the food was excellent both times. The beef broth is so flavorful in the pho. This time I ordered grilled salmon with ginger, perfect cooked and so tasty. Hubby has ordered yellow curry with chicken both times and raves about it. The portions are big and keep nice for warming for the next day's lunch. I am not giving 5 stars because the chairs are a bit uncomfortable and the atmosphere lent itself more to the prior establishment that was a cafe. Service was good and quick. We are fortunate not to have to travel 20 minutes to the original location anymore.

As a fan of Vietnamese Pho soup I always had to drive to Colonie or Albany to find a restaurant that serves this delicious dish. Well that all changed when I visited Pho Van's in Rotterdam. Located right on Hamburg St with plenty of parking. Only caveat is that right now they're cash only. That will change, but it's good to know ahead of time. The staff is super friendly and the interior of the restaurant was clean and charming. We ordered our food to go, and it was beautifully packaged. The noodles were kept separate from the broth so as not to get mushy. The portions were very generous and the price was reasonable. Now down to the food! I ordered my soup with little beef meatballs, and my son ordered the plain noodle. As an appetizer we ordered the egg rolls. The soup was HEAVENLY!!!!! The broth was aromatic and not overpowering. Included was a small container or a shiracha and one of a sweeter flavoring. You can adjust the flavor to suit your tastes. As I mentioned they kept everything separate so I could add as many or few noodles as I wanted. The vegetables were fresh and nicely crisp. The meatballs were a great compliment to the dish as well. The egg rolls were a taste sensation! You get four small egg rolls that are pack with flavor. There is a dipping sauce to accompany them, but they honestly didn't need anything else. The veggies that accompanied them were nicely cut and delicious! If you are on the fence about Vietnamese cuisine jump off it and head to Pho Van, you won't be disappointed.

    Chili on the table

Dangerously close to my house- I'll be there often! Love the downtown spot but enjoyed this new place even more. Gracious service; he's so kind. Perfectly sized menu with vegetarian choices. My favorite hot chilies on the table. I had the Bun fresh tofu rolls - huge!! And very very fresh! I have enough for lunch tomorrow. Owner gave me extra sauce to go. Trying the Pho Chay next time!! Good parking, outdoor seating possibilities. Wow!! I'm super excited!!

Finally got to the new Pho Vans Vietnamese restaurant in Rotterdam. Pictures don't do it justice. Forgot to take a picture of the spring rolls because they were so good we dug right in! Husband got the spicy chicken with lemongrass (right pic) and I got the crispy half chicken (left pic). The presentation was beautiful, the food was steaming hot and the flavors were exceptional. The spicy chicken was so tender and the perfect amount of spice. My crispy chicken was also tender, very crispy and the sauce with the white rice...delicious! I want to go back asap and try one of the other beautiful looking dishes coming out. It's cash only right now. They do take reservations. Service was good, atmosphere is simple, prices reasonable, you can't go wrong. I'd only had Vietnamese food once before and couldn't really remember it but I am now a big fan!

I was a big fan of the salmon at Van's and almost went with that at Saigon but was convinced to try something different so I went with the pork. I enjoyed my usual small bowl of Shrimp and Pork Wonton Soup ($8.00) with tender dumplings, egg noodles, scallions, cilantro, and crispy shallots in a flavorful broth. Best ever. Upon my recommendation, we both ordered the Shaking Beef, or Bò Lúc Lắc, ($25.) which is a delicious Vietnamese dish of marbled cubes of beef tossed in all the good stuff: soy sauce, oyster sauce, fish sauce, a little sugar, butter, garlic, and black pepper. Everything is shaken around in the wok to get a nice all-around sear, hence the name...Shaking Beef! We enjoyed it with Brown Rice instead of Jasmine. Kudos: The cubed filet mignon was cooked perfectly; it was tender and pink in middle. Outstanding! Two reactions: --I did not like the lime dipping sauce because it was very salty (grains of Sea Salt intact)served in a small dish that was on the plate, so next time I will order another type of sauce. However, the beef was flavorful without it. --There were too many sliced red onions and not enough spring onions. Our two orders to go (Pho with Filet and Chicken Wings) were ready when we finished lunch. Grandsons were delighted! Service was efficient and courteous as usual.

The duck wrapped in scallion pancakes was the best thing we ordered! Delicious! The second best thing was the Taiwanese popcorn chicken, also very tasty. The edamame were edamame. The spicy dumplings were alright, the filling didn't really have enough flavor to be discernible above the chili oil coating the outside. They were tossed with fresh cucumber which was really nice. Okay, here's the tea on the bad stuff. It was really slow for a weekend night. The service was all over the place. They seem to just all work the room but there is no assigned server to your table so they have no idea what is going on. We were all served waters with our other drinks, but unfortunately one of the water glasses was broken. We gave it back to one of the servers who apologized but never came back with a new glass of water, or the additional drink someone else from our party asked for. Another server couldn't speak English which caused many other issues. We were approached several times to order food from different servers. They tried to take our menus away after ordering appetizers. Many more shenanigans ensued, it was honestly a mess. I ordered the biang biang noodles. I had to ask both servers the same questions about my meal because nobody was talking to each other and I got two completely different answers. I decided to accept the risk and order this dish anyway. I wish I hadn't, it was legitimately awful. The small slices of beef were stone cold and were inedible. There was no meat at all, it was just grizzle. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. It was like trying to chew on rubber. Awful! I pushed all the meat to the side of my dish and tried to eat around it. One of the servers asked me if I wanted a box. I told her that the meat was disgusting and just to pack the few noodles I had left on the plate. She just said "oh sorry." The ramen dish had 2 of the thinest slices of pork loin that I have ever seen! They might as well have been cold cuts. And both of those were mostly fat. They were roasted and served untrimmed. And thats all the meat that came in the Tonkotsu ramen dish, besides the 2 slices of fish cakes. What are we on rations guys?? They are very stingy with the protein here. When a place starts cutting food quality and has no self awareness of service quality you know a restaurant is struggling financially or you have an absentee owner situation. I tried to pay a portion of our meal with a gift card and the server couldn't figure out how to do that so she said that they do not accept gift cards. I paid the bill with my credit card and headed for the door. As we were walking out the door, she ran up to me and said "oh we accept gift card, my manager show me how. You can pay gift card when you come again!" I said okay and walked out the door laughing. Don't worry! We will never be back again!

We had been wanting to try Simone's Kitchen. But their line for service was sooo long and then the likelihood of finding an available table to eat at looked very discouraging. So, my wife suggested we walk two blocks north to Pho Queen. This was a new location since my last review, but it had the same warmth and comfortable high-back chairs from the former location. Overall, the space is not much different in size from the former; it still only seats about 18-20 customers. We were warmly greeted by the sister of the owner/chef who said she was helping her sister out tonight and offered us seating at a table for two in the front window. The menu still lists a variety of both Thai and Vietnamese style dishes, and I think they still do not offer alcoholic beverages. We didn't inquire about beverages as we were satisfied with the tap water provided. I did see a blackboard that listed a variety of bubble teas. One of the specials that we saw listed on the sidewalk sign from our window seating was Curry Puffs ($10). They were something we'd never had before so, of course we had to try them. The dumpling dough was unlike a wonton wrapper, maybe more like an empanada or pierogi wrapper, and the filling was curry with some vegetables like peas and carrots. There were four of them and they were provided with a side sauce similar to a nuoc mam. They were flavorful and quite enjoyable. My wife ordered the Tofu Phad Khuen Chai ($20). The menu description is sautéed fried tofu with bean sprouts, khuen-chai (Chinese celery) caramelized with sugar, fish sauce, and soy sauce. The dish provided also included carrots and green peppers. My wife enjoyed it but also said it could have been more flavorful. My entrée was a total surprise. I had been thinking about ordering the seafood dish, Phad Cha Talay. But decided instead to order the duck dish, Kaeng Phed Ped Yang. When my meal was served by the Chef it was Phad Cha Talay ($26). I had not mentioned to anyone my original thought. We had a good laugh with the Chef and her sister and I insisted on staying with my "first thought." The Phad Cha Talay was delicious with shrimp, scallops, mussels, squid, broccoli, carrots, green peppers, kaffir lime leaves, rice, and a very flavorful sauce. Each seafood was perfectly cooked to perfection, and the white rice provided an excellent opportunity to soak up all that yummy sauce. Looks like we'll have to plan another visit for me to try that duck dish. Hopefully, when a clairvoyant isn't working.

Many people get take out from here which I will admit, we have done twice but we really enjoy dining in at the restaurant because it's fun. The staff is really nice and extremely helpful. When we say vegan they know what we mean which is difficult sometimes because a lot of people have misconceptions about what that entails. You have to think about what ingredients the noodles were made with, do they contain egg or not. What sauces are traditionally used, is it a fish sauce? Is something cooked with butter? So just saying no meat, eggs, or dairy doesn't always make people think about everything but this restaurant gets it. Also people ask well what about gluten? It has nothing to do with being vegan it is related to having celiac disease. Bottom line, if you have food allergies or sensitivities, they know what is in their food and they will tell you or offer suggestions to help you out.
