I finally had a sit down meal at Vans and it was delish. The place was crowded. The crowd was mostly young. They looked like savvy college students who knew where to eat without breaking the bank. Vans is not pricey. The food tastes fresh. We ordered Spring Rolls and spicy beef noodle soup called Bun Bo Hue. The decor is very simple. The restaurant is rather large. We got our meal quickly and it was wonderful. The only thing I had an issue with is that the restaurant is incredibly understaffed. Somehow, the small team of servers make it work despite having to navigate a large space. A few times, a middle aged server actually ran across the floor in order to get meals to customers in a timely manner. That was a little troubling to watch but for the staff, it seemed to be all in a days work.

Van's... so nice I'm reviewing it twice. I've been back a few times since my initial review 2+ years ago. The food is still amazing. I tried the pork this time and found it to be superb. My brother tried the duck which was a real crowd pleaser. There were no leftovers for him. We also split the spring rolls (not shown) and while they were good, I wouldn't mind skipping them next time. The ambiance is still "whole in the wall". The decor is old and that's part of the charm. The focus isn't on Instagram-worthy wall art. It's been the same for 2 years and was probably there 8 years before the . Service is impeccable. Our waitress was attentive without hovering. She packed us up and even took a picture of me & my brother for me. I don't get over to Van's as often as I wish I could, but knowing it's there is comforting. I'll be back

    This is the chicken pho

This place was amazing I got the summer spring rolls and the vegetarian egg rolls and they were amazing then I got the chicken pho and the chicken was tender and juicy they broth was flavorful and make sure to use the stuff they bring out and if your feeling it use some of the chile oil on the table all and all it was an amazing place 5 stars

The servers were super nice, and our food came out quickly since it wasn't too busy. The summer rolls were fine and the sauce was tasty, but I wish it had more veggies. The bun bo hue was huge! I wasn't able to finish all the noodles because there was so much meat. Also, we were able to find street parking, but it wasn't the safest area.

    Roach

Would not recommend there a roach in my pho. They took to ale our order and I had to get waiter attention to get served

I have eaten Vietnamese food all over the world and this is one of the best restaurants I've ever been to. The service was outstanding. We had summer rolls, shrimp salad, and a combination plate. Delicious. Would highly recommend. sometimes you can get parking out front but there's a public parking lot just a few stores down.

Be prepared this is not your typical Viet restaurant. We were visiting for college move in. I don't know... my son recommended this place bc he had good pho here... but we didn't end up getting pho, but instead we got rice entrees... We tried their spring rolls - skip it - it's not what you think it is.. it's like fried chicken batter thick. We didn't like it. The lemongrass pork chop - way too thick - not what we imagined... we miss the thin pork chop, bc this version was too dry. The grilled slice beef is ok - again, some pieces are very tough to chew. Good flavor tho. The crispy roast chicken was a huge disappointment. Really really dry AF... even drown in the sauce wouldn't revive it. My kids didn't like this one at all... Portion was big enough to share for a family of 4. The space is big, lots of room and owner speaks Cantonese, Viet and English... multi talented. The total bill was about $72, added 18% (the owner will ask you what % tip you want to give).

This is one of our frequent spots to stop on a long drive whenever we drive through Albany! We usually have a large party (this time 10 people) and they've always had seats for us and have been accommodating. They do take credit card, and usually the receipt is handwritten and not itemized well. Every time I go, I always get the pho which is delicious and warms me up, especially in the winter. The spring rolls are also yummy. I'd also highly recommend the shakes- mango and avocado are our favorite flavors that we've tried so far.

When I lived in Albany, I used to visit Van's frequently. The deliciousness and great service has not changed one bit! I was able to treat a guest from Spain to his first Vietnamese dish. I think he enjoyed it. I highly recommend Vans!

Then came the pineapple fried rice with pork belly. Savory, caramelized pork belly met bright bursts of pineapple in a perfect sweet-salt balance. Fluffy rice studded with peas, carrots, and ribbons of egg. My three year old son dove in without hesitation, happily scooping forkfuls of rice and pineapple like he had discovered treasure. No negotiations. Just joy. Fifteen minutes later, box in hand, the real event began. Across melting ice. A sharp jaywalk. A cut through the gas station. A full sprint toward the train station as the gates threatened to close and my family waited. It was an unofficial, record-breaking mile fueled entirely by fried rice ambition. Once the cold air finally left my lungs, I cracked open the box. Steam rose into the winter air. The smell alone was victory. I ate every last grain on that train, a triumphant feast earned the hard way. My wife was not impressed with how close I cut it. I, however, stand by the decision. Some meals are worth the sprint.

A tea leaf salad or Lat phat thoat has "Crispy pea, peanut, sesame seed and garlic oil with ground pickle tea leaf, cabbage and tomato." It was a little funky, a bit like kimchi, with a wonderful textural crunch provided by the peanuts. Palata (deep fried layered & flattened dough), commonly served at street food stalls, is reminiscent of scallion pancakes (without the scallion). In this case, it was served with a chicken, potato, and dahl stew. The saltiness of the stew was tamed by the layered and fatty dough. I might skip the chicken dumplings because those were boiled from frozen, store bought items. The pandan dessert, similar to a bubble tea, was an added extra. I'd definitely go again.

Pulling up, I'll admit--I was a bit confused. From the outside, it looked more like an old-school diner than a ramen spot. But at that point, we were committed (and not about to turn back toward NYC), so we decided to give it a shot. I'm really glad we did. The interior is no-frills and a bit tight for a family of five, but the staff made it work and got us settled comfortably. We started with edamame, which was perfectly seasoned, and shrimp and vegetable gyoza that the kids absolutely devoured. I also grabbed a Sapporo to wash it all down--solid start. Then came the main event. We ordered a mix: chicken ramen, beef stew ramen, two tonkotsu with double chashu, and a red curry ramen. The only dish that didn't quite stand out was the chicken ramen--it wasn't bad, just not as flavorful as the others. The tonkotsu ramen? Total hit. Both of my kids demolished their bowls--nothing left behind. My wife went all in on the beef stew ramen and loved it so much it sparked a debate at the table about how it stacks up against some Manhattan spots. And then there was my dish--the red curry ramen. Shoutout to our waitress for the recommendation. It had the perfect balance of salt, savory depth, and heat. The broth was this vibrant, bright red that just looked incredible--and tasted even better. Easily one of the top three ramen bowls I've ever had. I had my doubts walking in, but don't make that mistake. This place is a hidden gem. My only knock on the place is the table size for a family of five. Service was great. Now I need more excuses to come up to Albany just to visit this place!

Upon entering, the girl behind the counter just stared at us. No greeting. No direction on where to sit. No smile. We assumed it was self seating so we found a booth. She came over, poured our waters, still said nothing. We had about 45 mins until the restaurant closed so I'm unsure of what the cold attitude was for, as there were still 4-5 other patrons there eating as well. My friend is a vegetarian and ordered the veggie dumplings, and I had the same but with meat. Once the plates arrived, the one set in front of me was green, and his not. I figured I would double check to make sure we had the correct ones - I didn't want him to end up eating the meat ones if it could be avoided. Sure enough, the plates were mixed up. Honestly seemed to be done purposefully because it's very clear they are 2 different orders. The texture was chewy/foamy and they also tasted like old grease. Disappointing but we still had soups to look forward to. Our ramen finally arrived and I was hoping it would be the redemption moment of the evening but it wasn't. It really lacked any depth of flavor. Again the meat was chewy instead of tender. More distracting was how we awkwardly felt rushed as the server was shutting off lights and music...again...with at least 15 mins until the kitchen closing time. She seemed annoyed we asked for to go containers. At no point did she check in with us, refill waters, or even crack any resemblance of a smile. I used to love this little spot when I was in college. It was cozy, delicious, inviting. Couldn't have had more of the opposite experience this time around! And for this reason I would not return. I will travel to Colonie for Kuma Ani for better food and MUCH better service. TLDR; this place is extremely overrated

On this visit they were decorated for the holidays. Beautiful red, silver, and white balls hung from the ceiling, string lights, pine garland, and a flocked Christmas tree in the front window all made the restaurant cozy and inviting. Many people get take out from here which I will admit, we have done twice but we really enjoy dining in at the restaurant because it's fun. The staff is really nice and extremely helpful. When we say vegan they know what we mean which is difficult sometimes because a lot of people have misconceptions about what that entails. You have to think about what ingredients the noodles were made with, do they contain egg or not. What sauces are traditionally used, is it a fish sauce? Is something cooked with butter? So just saying no meat, eggs, or dairy doesn't always make people think about everything but this restaurant gets it. Also people ask well what about gluten? It has nothing to do with being vegan it is related to having celiac disease. Bottom line, if you have food allergies or sensitivities, they know what is in their food and they will tell you or offer suggestions to help you out. The spring rolls, the gyoza, the crazy noodle (drunken noodle), curry rice, fresh rolls, all of it has been good everytime we go. This review is long overdue, Tamarind is just so good if you need vegan or vegetarian options they have a lot of plant-based menu items. The unsweetened iced tea, that's my jam! Love it!
