If I am not getting banh mi, I would definitely order this again. The meat was smoky with a slightly sweet flavor and was seasoned really well. I loved how they added a lot of vegetables. The pork roll was also really good. We also got the 44 pho soup and the broth was amazing. It was rich, flavorful, and all the ingredients tasted fresh. I would definitely come back again. It's not necessarily the cleanest restaurant, but I gave them a bit of grace since we were trying to dine outdoors and shit (literally) happens. My family and I visited this restaurant during their 10-year anniversary, and it was delicious--we loved it! The Banh Hoi is one of our favorites, and we really enjoy making our own spring rolls. Another favorite of ours is the Pho Suon Bo; I love the beef rib, which was tender and fell right off the bone. You know it's good when the pho is packed with your favorites like beef and tendon. One downside was that I ordered Thai tea but received Vietnamese coffee instead. While the coffee was good, it was extremely strong--just one sip and you feel wide awake! Pho Tran Vu is our solid lunch spot routine after a morning weekend hike, lunch and then Costco shopping. It's conveniently located in a strip mall. The people here are always friendly, and the service with food and drink is quick. I always go between some pho or a rice vermicelli dish with my side of beef broth. When I'm feeling ravenous, I get the beef rib pho. The meat just slides right off the bone. Not all Vietnamese joints have the big beef bone pho. Once in a while, I'll go for the chicken salad, but anything you order here is delicious. All the fresh veggies and juicy, flavorful meat make Pho Tran Vu a solid Viet spot. I wasn't too hungry, so I was able to finish it. I was also disappointed that for the price it didn't even have pork knuckles in it. Just some pork slices. The meat was also lower quality because it was really chewy. My husband got their chicken banh mi and they asked if he wanted pate and he said yes, but they failed to tell us that the pate was an extra $1!! Pate is a STAPLE in banh mi's, but yet it costs EXTRA to have it? I'm mainly upset that they didn't even tell us that it was an extra cost. I also ordered a Salted Lemon drink which was actually really good! Its taste reminded me a lot of my childhood. I think I would be back if I was nearby again and was craving soup, but otherwise I probably would skip this place since it is pretty expensive for SJ. I came here the other weekend since we went to Palo Alto to shop around. We came here for breakfast first and there wasn't many customers inside, but my cousin said he had heard that this pho spot had really good dry noodles from his friends. The beef rib was huge and tender. It's a great addition to the pho depending on how hungry you are. Only downside was that the garnish basil leaves were going bad because they were slightly black. My sister got the bun rieu because she's a fanatic. I did mention she should be wary of ordering it at pho restaurants because it may not be their speciality. I was right because we all tried the broth and it was way too tomato-y. She said the rest of her meal was fine, but she didn't like the crab meatballs in there because it was mushy when she took a bite. My cousin got the special dry noodles and said it was good. He got it with the clear noodles but said he would opt it out next time for yellow noodles instead so the sauce sticks on there when eating. Other than that, the pho here is good. Really nice staff here, i got a pho with steak and tendon and they did not skimp out on the tendon. I also ordered a beef rib on the side and wow, it was huge and the meat was super tender. It was nicely salted as well. My partner ordered the garlic wings which is made with flour. When it came out, it looked incredibly greasy and i poked at it, and it was. There was no fried crunch anymore and my partner didn't enjoy it. So definitely get the pho, but not the wings! read more

Pho Tran Vu has always been our go to Vietnamese restaurant in our neighborhood! They have great variety, and the dishes always come out relatively quickly. I've never had anything bad from here among the dozens of times we've eaten here, and the staff is always very friendly. My favorite things to order here are pho ga (chicken), various bahn mi, and vermicelli dishes. Portions are reasonably good. The only thing that has changed in recent years is that the price has gone up quite a bit, but I completely understand this is not in the restaurant's control given all the crazy costs of everything going up. I have been coming here for over 5 years and the last few visits have been disappointing. Maybe it is due to new management (a staff informed me that they are under new management). I came in at 8:30 (they close at 9:30) and ordered Bun Bo Hue. My bowl of Bun Bo Hue only had pork slices with no beef at all...What do you think "Bo" stands for in Bun Bo Hue? That's right, BEEF. I informed the staff and was at least given a separate side of 2 sad pieces of brisket so (2 stars for that). As for the broth, what was once a delicious deep red colored broth is now a watered down yellow-orange bland broth. Also don't bother with the Com Tam because they are NOT broken rice. I asked why is it called Com Tam if it is not Com Tam, I was told "you can order with fried rice, it will taste better". Sad to say I will not be coming back here. I will take my business to the other Vietnamese spot on Castro instead where the Bun Bo Hue is actually served with beef in a rich deep red broth, and the Com Tam is actually broken rice. read more

We swung by Pho Tran Vu last Friday. We had gone here one time before years ago as well. On Friday, I ordered a small #45 (beef balls noodle soup) and tofu spring rolls to share. The broth of the noodle soup was comforting and warm. The flavor was perfect and not too salty. It was super filling even though it was only a small size. The tofu spring rolls were nice and refreshing. I always pair them with the chili sauce and let me tell you it's an elite combo! The service was wonderful and they checked on us often. The interior is clean, modern looking, and inviting. The staff friendly and attentive. The menu was extensive, pretty much having something for everyone. Our meal started out well with their fresh spring rolls. The accompanying sauce was delicious, especially after being spiked up by the addition of the chili. I ordered the Bún Thịt Nướng Chả giò. Vermicelli noodles with lemongrass grilled pork, an egg roll, bean sprouts, lettuce, and pickled carrots&daikon. The pork was so dry, and bland. The egg roll was nice and crispy, but the flavor was okay. The saving grace in the dish was the quantity and the freshness of the noodles and veggies. I've passed this place so many times, wanting to try it. I finally did but boy was it a disappointment. I want to think it was an off day, but the meat was pretty bad. I was hoping for it to be a usual spot for me. HOWEVER, my mom did always tell me that you should order a dish that's in the name of the restaurant. The standard tables and service. The table is packed. They give you like 6-7 different condiments right there.
