This is in the Viet part of Houston's chinatown! We visited PhoTran on Bellaire Blvd and got the complimentary bone marrow and pho. Their pho was delicious! They gave generous servings of meat. Prices are very reasonable. A large pho bowl is around $13-14, and it typically lasts me 2 meals! The complimentary bone marrow is a unique part of this restaurant! If you want them to cut it off the bone, that costs extra. The complimentary bone marrow is HUGE and comes with a pair of scissors to help you. Service is fast and friendly. You pay at the end at the counter. Inside is nice and clean. I went on a Saturday around 11:30 am and was seated right away. I heard you have to show up before or right around lunch time to make sure they still have the bone marrow!

Another pho restaurant I wanted to try off Bellaire as I continue my pho quest for the best pho in town. When I ordered the pho and took it home, it showed soo much promise, I mean soo much. This restaurant gave me the most meat togo, plenty of flank, brisket, meat balls, etc... I was very impressed the amount of meat it has to go so I see the value already. Plenty of fresh herbs, bean sprouts, sliced jalapeños, basil leaves. One of the best meats and vegetables togo. Sadly what fell flat, was the soup, it had zero flavor. It tasted like water, it had zero flavor, I mean zero. No salt, no fish sauce, no sugar, I don't understand how it looks amazing but doesn't taste like it does. It has no flavoring at all. If the soup had flavor, this would be a different story. I ate all the meat and vegetables and threw away the rest.

Pho Tran was recommended to us as we were searching for pho places to try in Houston. We decided to come early in the morning around 8AM as breakfast. We were the only ones dining in at the time. I like that their pho has four different sizes: baby, small, large, and extra large. A little odd that they didn't have a "medium" on the menu. And no matter what type of meat you wanted in your pho, the price is the same. The only price differences was the size of your bowl. I decided to get their filet mignon beef pho in a small. I don't normally eat a whole lot for breakfast so getting anything bigger than that means I won't finish it. The pho came out nice and hot. Noodles were a great texture. The meat, however, was not that great. It was soft and juicy but it did not break apart easily. I had to keep chewing and chewing. The more I ate it, the more I did not want it. The broth was just OK to me. I wasn't really a huge fan. Maybe we went on and off day or maybe I just ordered the wrong meat. Overall, it was just OK. I don't think I would be back when I visit Houston again since there are so many other places to check out.

My wife and I come here because we like the mom and pop vibes. It reminds us of when we're around home with the family. The soups are all good. This time I got the Phở Đặc Biệt with a side of beef bone. You can never go wrong with this meal if you know how to eat it.

This is a pho restaurant that has been in Houston for a long time, and every time my family and I come by from out of state we always come here whenever we crave pho! It's ran by this sweet old Vietnamese woman (who I'm assuming is the owner) and the service is always quick and friendly. The decor of the place is typical like any other old school pho places and the space is pretty narrow, but we didn't mind all of that since it's not a modernized place. For food, I got their Pho Dac Biet (Special Pho) at a large size ($13.50) and my mom got their Bun Mang Vit (Duck Vermicelli Soup with Cabbage Salad) at a large size as well ($14.50). Prices were decent. Everything was hot and delicious! Also if you ask them for "Xi Quach, which means Bone Marrow with meat, they will give you one with no charge... and trust me it's HUGE! Overall, nice old school Pho restaurant that, although not aesthetic, has a special charm to it with their simplicity and friendly service.

When I want no-frills vibes, fast and furious service, and more importantly, a delicious and piping hot broth of pho, I make sure to go to Pho Tran. It is the quintessential dive in Bellaire Chinatown and the kind of place that is always poppin with locals. It is one of the more underrated noodle soup dives in the city. The interior is stale, with office style flourescent lighting and a handful of the usual faux-granite tables for medium sized groups. When they're busy, the wait can be 20 minutes, but most folks are usually in and out. Even the odor of the various soups they have cooking in the back sometimes permeate the dining room. I'm not complaining, it's like walking into someone's home while they make you a delicious meal. Their namesake pho is outstanding. The murky broth is a little darker than I'm used to, but it was full of flavor with a hint of salt. For the dac biet, the accompanied meats were abundant and the side condiments (especially the Thai basil) was extremely fresh. There are some nice cuts of flank and tendon and I was reasonably impressed with their bo vien meatballs. I'm not calling it the perfect pho, but definitely one that I can enjoy on any day. Additionally they also specialize in bun rieu, bun bo hue, and bun mang vit. (duck bamboo noodle soup) There aren't a lot of places out there that can churn out a quality bowl of each under the same roof, but it's something to take note for anyone who is pho'd out. I was happy with the prices and the relatively relaxed but efficient service. The latter was quick and wastes no time in getting the food to the table. English is not the primary language here, so keep that in mind if you're not able to converse in Vietnamese. I would give Pho Tran a big xe-lua (#1) style thumbs up. __________ (#1) Which btw, is available. Not a lot of places will offer a mega sized xe-lua style bowl, but it's doable here.

The pho here tastes amazing but I feel like it was missing something. 4/5. Everything came out quick! The service was nice and attentive. This place got busy quick and I was glad I got seating when I did! Will come back to try their other pho menu items to compare!

Local Pho place mostly just doing pho, good value for the amount of food you get. Families and other older Vietnamese folks eating here so you know it's pretty good. Strip mall with ample parking. #1 Pho with Filet Mignon - meat cooked well, still juicy with chew. Lots of noodles to go along with it. Broth is delicious but not as rich as I'd like it to be, hence 4/5. Good bowl of pho though! Vietnamese coffee - really strong, as expected. Fair price too. They have a range of silly drinks to choose from, which is exciting Food comes out pretty fast & it's a small spot so you can easily flag staff down. They get stuff done fast here, no bs. Prices are good and portions are plenty. Worth stopping by if you're in the area.

My fav place and will always come back here, love the bones that come with pho and love the staff and owners, everyone so sweet and friendly and very authentic Viet food! Coffee is good too and prices reasonable even though went up a tad too. :-(

I think Pho Tran might be my new favorite Pho restaurant in Bellaire.... They give sooo much meat and it's always so tender! Broth is clear and delicious. I like that they give a bit more variety of fresh vegetables too. Very hole in the wall and frequented by older Vietnamese locals which is a great sign...

OMG! This place was so busy! We came in around 11:30 am (they opened @ 11:00) and they were packed! Luckily, a gentleman just got finished so we were able to get seated as soon as they cleared his table. Chris and I each ordered the large Filet Mignon Pho. The bowl came in steaming with tasty broth, glass noodles, slices of filet mignon, sweet onions and a sprinkle of cilantro. Guests came and went and there were still people waiting to dine. The lady owner and her staff were all very pleasant and friendly. It seems like this place is the go-to for pho in Chinatown! Very pleased!

Chef T.

Good pho and broth, very cozy inside and only a few items are on the menu so you know it's their specialty. It comes with a side of a huge beef bone for extra collagen. I came after lunch and people still kept coming in. They have a super small bowl which is perfect as well as other sizes.

Pho dac biet
Kasey Z.

The pho was really nice and came out super fast, but it honestly did not impress me more so than any other pho restaurant. It was on the pricier side for a bowl of pho in Houston. I saw everyone eating a big bone with their pho as well, and didn't see it on the menu/realize that it was free until I read other yelp reviews after. I think that if they had advertised that, or had offered it to us when ordering, it would've made for a better experience!

The filling is placed in a pan and then a thin layer of batter made with tumeric and coconut milk yellow batter is poured on top. You wrap the lettuce around the bánh xèo/bánh khọt and dip it in the fish sauce. I got the bánh khọt and the bò né. Bánh khọt is like a mini, thicker version of bánh xèo and came with nine pieces. Their bánh khọt was crispy, sweet and savory, and went well with the fish sauce. Although the portions initally look small, they are very filling. The bò né was filling and sizzling when it came out. It also came with a side of salad. The meat was tender. I really liked the bánh khọt and would definitely come back for them. It's nice having an authentic Vietnamese restaurant in our area, close to us, so we don't have to make the trek to Bellaire every time we crave some Viet food!

I couldn't have been more wrong. Xeo Yum (#1) as it turns out is one of the most legit Vietnamese places in Midtown serving up some of the city's best banh xeo and banh khot. Located inside of a Food Hall (#2) in the back corner, they have low-key become a destination and without question, the most popular stall in the entire place. The fan base didn't happen overnight but is a direct result of Chef Cuong Nguyen's commitment to quality Vietnamese fare. Banh Xeo is their signature item, which is also known as a sizzling crepe or pancake made of rice flour, tumeric, and coconut milk. The banh xeo holds well, is perfectly crispy, and is nicely stuffed with an assortment of beans sprouts, shrimp, and some of the best grilled pork belly I've had. Another specialty item that doesn't get enough mention is their banh khot, which is similar but has a mini muffin / cupcake like appearance made in a specialty cast iron mold. This version is wonderfully crispy and pairs perfectly with fresh greens and fish sauce with some funk. It is my favorite item here. Some have argued they also serve one of the best bo ne (#3), the Vietnamese version of steak and eggs served in a skillet. The chunks of beef are nice and tender with just a tad of char, served with two fried eggs, and a banh mi baguette with a mix of butter and spare. Normally I think of spam or sausage included with the meats, but Chef Cuong's spin is with cherry tomatoes. It's a different approach and I'm not mad at it. Folks not looking for this can shoot for bo luc lac, aka shaking beef, which is also recommended. The staff here is sweet, hard-working, and very friendly. They also make a mean Vietnamese coffee and offer free iced self-serve water. The prices are what I would expect in a Midtown food hall, and there's plenty of seating. Anyone checking out the food hall need to make Xeo Yum as part of their eating itinerary. __________ (#1) A play on the Vietnamese sizzling crepe, Banh "xeo" and yum" (#2) Previously the Conservatory and now Stestí Food Hall. The restaurant was easy to find, right off Main Street, and parking was a breeze. When we walked in, the restaurant had a modern look with a beautiful mural celebrating the homeland. We were greeted and told to sit wherever we'd like, so we picked a table and settled in. Our server came by with the menus, napkins, utensils, and plates, all neatly stacked, and then gave us some time before coming back to take our order. We ordered several different bowls of pho so everyone could try something -- salmon, steak and meatballs, and the combo (đặc biệt). Of course, we also had to try their dry pho. We also noticed they had a mango salad with a choice of protein, and since that sounded intriguing, we decided to give that a try too. The mango salad came out first, and I'm honestly still not quite sure how I feel about it. The mango was tart, and there was a creamy element that gave the salad an interesting texture and flavor. I did really like the grilled shrimp, though. Out of the protein options, I'd recommend the shrimp with this salad, although I could also see chicken pairing well with the flavors. Then came the pho. We tried several different broths, and they were all flavorful on their own. I didn't feel like they needed anything added unless you prefer extra spice or seasoning. I also really appreciated how generous they were with the basil. There was plenty to go around, which is always a win when you're eating pho! As we finished up, our server came back to the table with our check and small spoons filled with what looked like crème brûlée. We asked her what it was, and she said she didn't know. We mentioned that it looked like crème brûlée, and she agreed before walking away. I'm not sure if this was something complimentary, a leftover from another dish, or something we were supposed to know about, but it was definitely an unexpected ending to the meal. If you know what this was, I'd love to know! Overall, we'd definitely come back. The food was great, the pho was flavorful, and there were plenty of options for everyone. The service could use a little improvement. Our server seemed to have some difficulty communicating in English, and we could have used a few water refills during the meal. Nothing major -- we probably just needed to speak up more. Good food, easy parking, a nice atmosphere, and a family-friendly menu. We'd come back to try more of what Old Saigon has to offer.

There was a small garnish of pickled onions and shredded carrot that went so well with the pork bowls. If they included more of that, the bowls would have been star status. But they didn't. And they weren't. Overall, I had a decent lunch. Maybe next time I'll dine in to see if that makes a difference.

I've actually been here twice now, and while my experiences were pretty different, one thing stayed consistent: the food is GOOD. The service, however... well, that's where things get a little interesting. First visit: I went on a Thursday afternoon with my mom and toddler, which was already a bold choice on my part. The place was packed AF... there wasn't a single seat left when we walked in. I was really just hoping my son would sit still long enough for us to enjoy a meal. The restaurant was averagely clean, but because they were so busy, we ended up grabbing our own menus and had to wave someone down a few times before we could order. I definitely understood that they were slammed, so I tried not to hold it too much against them. We ordered the bún riêu ốc, bánh khọt, and bún nem cua bể, and thankfully, the food made up for the chaotic service. The bún riêu ốc was a 10/10 for me. I am VERY particular about bún riêu because, in my opinion, my mom makes the best. So when I say this is probably the closest I've had to my mom's, that is a BIG compliment. The broth had that comforting, flavorful quality I look for, and I could honestly eat this all over again. The bánh khọt was surprisingly good too! My mom and I normally don't care for bánh khọt because of the coconut milk base, but we kept seeing it come out to other tables and eventually felt obligated to see what the hype was about. I'd give it a 7/10. Not something I'd normally order, but I'm glad we tried it. The bún nem cua bể was also solid--another 7/10 from me. To me, it's basically a rectangular egg roll. The presentation is almost like a deconstructed bún thịt nướng, and everything comes together nicely when you mix it all up. Second visit: I came back with my boyfriend, and unfortunately, this experience was a little more frustrating. He initially asked for a new bowl of nước mắm because I made the mistake of putting way too much red chili paste in ours. Oops! He asked for some extra nước mắm, and the first time, they brought out what was basically a tiny medicine cup amount. We looked at each other like... you gotta be kidding us... He asked again, and the second time they brought out a slightly bigger plastic cup. At this point, my boyfriend was understandably getting irritated. Then, FINALLY, on the third attempt, a girl came over with an actual regular-sized bowl of nước mắm. It took three tries to get there. I know restaurants get busy, but because this place is relatively small, I do feel like the service could be a little more attentive and consistent. Both of my visits made that pretty apparent. The first time they were overwhelmed by the crowd, and the second time it just felt like there was a disconnect between what we were asking for and what was actually being brought out. Another thing to keep in mind: when this place is packed, it gets HOT. Like, why am I sweating while eating my noodles? So if you're sensitive to heat, just be prepared. Especially the guys... Also, the bánh khọt takes a while to come out, so don't order it expecting a quick meal. It's made to order, and you'll definitely be sitting there for a bit waiting for it. Honestly, just embrace it and order something to snack on in the meantime. Overall, I'd definitely come back because the food is worth it, especially the bún riêu ốc. I just think the service can be hit or miss depending on how busy they are. My first visit was more of a "they're slammed, I get it" situation, while my second visit left me a little more frustrated.
