When I arrived in Davis as an undergrad in 2004, Pho Hoa Viet was the only Vietnamese offering, and to return to Davis in 2018, to see that they were no longer in business. I was hesitant to try another Vietnamese restaurant. The decor is mostly untouched from the days that Taste of Thai occupied the space. High ceilings, clean restrooms, and appropriately spaced out tables (COVID-19 appropriate). Started off with the banh xeo. Excellent cook to the shrimp and pork with bean sprouts. I am generally not a fan of bean sprouts, but these were cooked perfectly. Tear pieces of the banh xeo and wrap in the lettuce with veggies and herbs and dip in the sauce. Most places don't get the crispiness correct, but Pho Tasty did a wonderful job. The bun bo hue was well done, the lemongrass was more heavy handed than traditionally done. But it worked well. It was topped with cha lua pork sausage and the traditional cuts of beef. No pork blood cubes, but understandable given the targeted audience. Overall, a wonderful Vietnamese restaurant. Quality was above expectations, and dare I say, my very own mother might enjoy it! read more

Been waiting in anticipation for this place to open. Too bad about taste of thai, but this is a welcome addition to downtown! Decided to check this place out with a friend of mine. Ordered over the phone for pick up around 6pm. Wanted to try the banh xeo, but they were unfortunately all out. Instead got the bun rieu and large pho with filet mignon and fat brisket. They were pretty busy so they told me it would be a 40minute wait. No big deal. My order was all packed and ready to go when I arrived. I guess the bun rieu soup container was overfilled because some of the soup leaked out, also not a big deal. Either that or the lid wasn't on tight enough. Brought it back, and the portions were pretty generous, and well worth the price. Both the bun rieu and pho were good. Bun rieu was my fave Vietnamese noodle soup growing up. My mom made it a lot, and I cook it monthly. Came with tofu, cha lua, pork meatballs, and of course the herbs and bean sprouts The pho came with rare sliced filet mignon, make sure you boil the soup on the stove when you bring it home so that it cooks the meat thoroughly. Great for when you can't be bothered to make your own pho and bun rieu, but otherwise you can make this at home. I would definitely return, and maybe try out the banh xeo and bun bo hue. Came here around 8:30 in hopes we'd be sat for a quick dinner. -- they closed at 9pm and knew we were cutting it close. But luckily we were able to get a table! This place is new and we'd been really wanting to try it ever since we saw the sign outside that they'd be having a new pho spot in Davis. We ordered quickly, appetizers were pork spring roles 7/10. They came with mint and it became a little over powering after maybe the first one, but they were really fresh and good. We also ordered the guo bao with pork and those were amaaaazing!!! 10/10! I'd eat those just alone. We also ordered a small pho bowl $10 and my boyfriend got a large $12. The bowls were huge and came already topped with everything and lots of heavy green onions and white onions. I'm a huge onion fan but it seems a little much. It might be better to have it on the side for customers to add themselves. The broth was amazing. So flavorful and rich. The pho rice noodles were soaking in the broth by the time it was ready to be eaten and they had thickened up but they were so good. The steak slices were a little thick to what we've normally had at different restaurants. Aside from that our servers seemed a little stressed / rushed and dealing with a big table, we had to ask for re fills on water a few times so maybe as long as they are actively looking / checking on customers I think it would be very beneficial. Besides that, we rushed, ate, enjoyed the flavorful meal and paid quickly so the two young lady servers wouldn't have to wait forever. There were 2 other tables there so not crazy busy for a Sunday night. I hope this place sticks around!! It has a lot of potential! Thank you, we'll be back to try more. :) read more

Stopped by here on the way to Reno. They close at 9pm and we got here at 8:45pm. The lady told us they close at 9pm but accommodated us anyway, so that was super cool. Promptly order filet and fatty brisket pho with no onions. The broth is one of the better broths that I've had. The filet and fatty brisket was super tender. The noodles were cooked to perfection, very silky and soft but still chewy. Would definitely come back again if I'm in the neighborhood. read more

I was excited to hear there was another pho place in Davis and finally gave it a try. I ordered beef pho with filet mignon and fatty brisket togo. Was ready for me in 10 min and I was out the door. The broth itself was nice and flavorful, but a-little salty. The filet mignon slices were absolutely amazing as they were soft and chewy even after sitting in the hot broth for a while. The fatty brisket was cooked well and fell apart as I chewed it. One thing I was sad about though was that the noodles were over cooked and mushy. I couldn't tell the difference between the individual noodles as they all just were mushy. Got the bun bo hue here after seeing many great reviews about it and it was indeed amazing! The broth was so flavorful and it was perfect for the rainy weather. My only complaint is that this place is probably the most expensive pho place I have ever been to. Two spring rolls started at $10 minimum and then a small pho was $14 and the portions are pretty small for the price. So just be cautious of that if you visit. I've been coming here since they opened and through their mini make over! So glad to have a great pho place in town. We usually get seated right away and service is quick ! Both our appetizers and soups come out within 5-10 mins regardless of how busy it is. I've picked up take out which is OK as it's soup so you are fighting elements. Last time I went here I ordered a chicken Pho. I expected cilantro, bean sprouts, lime, and most importantly chicken. When the bowl came out, there was only 3 shreds of chicken (not exaggerating). I had to dig around my soup to find them. The soup, however, was good but I was just disappointed by the amount of chicken I received. The beef pancake was good... both my daughters liked it. The pho was very generic like the soup base was from a package. I used a lot, lots of housin sauce. The meat was kinda dry and jerky texture. My daughter's weren't too impressed with it too. Since I used gallons of housin sauce, I tasted her soup...tasted like a shoe. Not a great taste at all. Service was not too good. We raised our hands like students getting the teacher's attention only to be ignored. The place has blacked out windows and the back lot looked empty. We thought the place was closed. But once we entered, the place has a nice waterfall wall and the placed looked modern from far away. The bathroom was clean with modern fixtures. Disappointing to say the least. Davis definitely needs a good Vietnamese restaurant yet this is not that. A good pho starts with a flavorful and aromatic broth. Pho Tasty's was completely flat and bland; tasted like plain beef broth with simple spices. The vermicelli was also uninspiring. The egg roll was good, but keep in mind it's not vegetarian. This place is TERRIBLE! There was a BUG on my meat and the service sucks. I first came here when they just opened and haven't been here since due to the horrible experience. I decided to try it out again because of the fairly high Yelp reviews, but I will not be coming here again. My first experience (a couple months ago): we tried to order an appetizer but the waiter said they were out of it. Then the waiter proceeded to come back and say it was in stock and that they can make it. After telling us they could make it, the waiter came back one again saying they were mistaken and actually can't make it. Afterwards we ordered our entrees and they took forever to come. When they came, the waiter was confused about which dish was which and was unable to tell us whose dish was whose, so we just guessed. When we went to go pay the check, the waiter charged us for the appetizer even though we never received it and we had to get a refund. My second experience (today): I tried to phone in a Togo order and was put on hold for 7 minutes until I eventually hung up and went in person to order. I placed my order in person and was told my order would be ready in 30 minutes but it was not. When I finally received my order, an item was missing. When I asked what happened to the missing item they remarked, "oh yeah we are actually out of bun rieu and were supposed to to tell you". After opening our order at home, they also forgot to include the extra noodle for one of our orders and that is when we discovered the BUG on the meat. I had high hopes for my second experience here but the service is terrible and the BUG in my food killed my appetite. It is a definitely understaffed. I would rather go to pho king. read more

Decided to come back and try this place out after the first time. This review isn't for food but for the service--- I've worked in the food industry my whole life and so I know how it works and the flow. We walked in and there was a party of four ahead of us. After us was a party of three, and then after them was two party of two people. We waited for about 10 mins before being seated and we were seated with water which was nice. After they gave us the menu, they had seated the rest of the other party behind us. There was only two servers which looked like one was sending out food and the other was taking orders and bussing. My partner and I knew what we wanted so we were waiting for the waiter since I knew they were busy we waited about 10 mins. The waiter decided to take everybody else's order that was behind us first. Left us sitting there for 20 mins waiting to get our orders taken. We decided to just leave because it was ridiculous we waited that long after being the first party there and our orders weren't taken first. Not sure I will be coming back, a little upset that we probably missed out on some good pho. Hopefully they can work on their customer service. read more

Came here on a Tuesday night with my SO and they were severely understaffed with only one poor server working the front end of the restaurant. He was handling the phone, seating the customers, taking their orders, clearing the tables etcetc. Took us a fair amount of time to be seated, and an additional wait just to have our orders taken down. All in all took around an hour to get our food. Pretty sure there was just maybe 1-2 cooks. That being said, there was nothing special about the food. We ordered the seafood house special (chicken broth) and shrimp clay pot. The broth was only average. The fish balls and calamari were the simple frozen ones that anybody can just buy at a store and cook up. With just about 2 pieces of each meat and a very basic broth, it is difficult to believe they charged $15 dollars for it. The clay pot was prepared incorrectly. It came in two separate platters. The clay pot itself had the shrimp and sauce, but the rice was served on another plate. First off, they should be served in the same clay pot so that the rice is cooked and mixed in together with some of the rice even crisping from its contact with the clay pot. Second, they need to be careful placing the clay pot on a normal ceramic/porcelain platter. That sort of heat will eventually cause the platter to shatter. The flavor again was just average. Nothing an average college student couldn't have prepared themselves. Majority of the flavoring was just from the brown sugar. Pho Tasty is honestly disappointing. It does not live up to the reviews that it has been receiving. They are overcharging for what is only average at best. You are much better off going to Pho King. They are not the best but they are decent. Their quality is consistent with what they are charging and by far much better than what I experienced at Pho Tasty. I also want to give a shout out to the server working the front. He was professional, polite and tried his best to deal with the situation. The time it took to be seated and served was understandable, so that is not part of the review. These 2 stars are solely for the quality of the food. I plan on giving it another try in the future in hopes that things improve. read more

My friends and I at at Pho Tasty when we visited Davis this weekend. We had originally planned to go to another pho restaurant, but they offered a very limited menu without any vegetarian options, so we ended up at Pho Tasty. We were pleasantly surprised, and I am very glad we ended up eating here instead. The spring rolls were delicious (and came with 4 rather than 2) and there were many options for my vegetarian friend. I had the filet mignon pho and it was superb. It came out at the perfect temperature (rather than scalding hot) and I appreciated that they offered multiple sizes. Usually it is hard or impossible to finish a bowl of pho, but the small was the perfect size here. Everything was delicious and promptly brought out to us. I didn't have to ask them to bring me a spoon, napkin, or chopsticks, they gave us everything we needed. If you are looking for a homey, delicious pho place, this is it. It reminded me of my favorite family owned pho restaurant where I grew up. This was the best pho I have had in years and was very reasonably priced. Additionally, I have to mention that my friend loved the ambiance of the restaurant (especially the jellyfish-esque display in the front). read more

A long-awaited Vietnamese restaurant finally makes its presence in Davis. Excellent customer service and clean, friendly atmosphere. Highlights: The Bun Bo Hue was exceptional. It got the stamp of approval from my Vietnamese father who is from Hue. The beef pho has an aromatic and strong pho flavor. The meats are also fresh and tender. Things that need improvement: The chicken pho was lacking in flavor and a bit salty. The menu doesn't have Vietnamese on it, so it's harder for older Vietnamese folks to order. We (my Vietnamese mother and I) decided to try this place out for dinner on April 21. Based on the reviews we tried this place, but our experience definitely didn't compare to the other people, and it's sad b/c they haven't been open so long. I'm not picky only rule is if I can make it better at home then your not the restaurant for me. Unfortunately this turned out to be true for this place. So we were not greeted as we came in since it's one guy for register, table orders/cleanup/food delivery, and to go orders. The restaurant looks nice, but there were several issues. We sat down and saw only 4 tables with people and if this is the busy dinner crowd they are not going to make it. Bad sign considering Woodstock's and the other restaurants had a lot of people for dinner. Anyway I gave it a chance we waited a good 10 min for a Menu or to even be acknowledged, so I decided to use the bathroom while we wait. There was a dirty jacket with hair on it in the bathroom and when I flushed the toilet water came out the bottom of the Tank..wth shouldn't these things have been taken care of before you opened. We finally get the menu, which is like a paper to go menu, and he asks us what we want to drink I asked for hot tea an Asian staple, but they have none, then got water but it was a baby water no bigger than my hand, he said they have soda but only a few and were out of the rest. Btw the excuse for all of this was they just opened. We ordered shrimp and pork spring rolls but they were out of all spring rolls same excuse as to why. Moving on we ordered Bún Riếu and Bún bò Huế to eat there and a Pork Bánh mì sandwich to go. They provided one little scoop of bean sprouts and basil for both of us to share. Didn't offer us any condiments and told us we could just take the hoisin sauce or siracha sauce from some girls dirty table because they just opened they didn't have enough. He should have cleaned it, so we ate without it. Another table asked for soy sauce and he stated he was out of that as well. It took another 10-15 min to get our meals, but only five minutes to eat since we barely got anything. Bún bò Huế was not good at all they used pho water and just put chili oil and peppers on top...so much water and very little noodles and I think I counted two pieces of meat with two meatballs and fat/ tendon that was literally too hard to eat. Noodles don't cost that much, I definitely didn't feel full like I usually do after a bowl of soup. I ordered a large full of mostly water. My mother ordered a small but still had very few noodles, no tomatoes at all, but they put the same meat in her soup as well it's suppose to be different soup. Yes they got the noodles in the soup right but that is it; just no flavor at all. Both soups were missing what they said in the menu description. If you run out of things don't continue to serve, could have just told us and we would have ordered something else, but most of the menu was unavailable. Anyway he gave us the bill and I had to remind him about the sandwich. He brought out the sandwich it was small in a to go container, bread was hard as a rock, barely any meat or vegetables and some kind of thousand island dressing. He also asked if we enjoyed everything I said no, and he said well we just opened. We paid him cash and he said he would be back with our change, but didn't go to the register and went to the back so guess he tipped himself because we left. One lady sitting near the door, was there before we sat down at our table, and was still waiting for her to go order as we were leaving since it was wrong. I was still hungry so my mom and I shared the sandwich but couldn't get through it b/c the meat tasted old and that dressing was disgusting, what is wrong with the normal pate they put in the sandwich why this substitute? Wait let me guess it's because they just opened. There were also only four pieces of fries that came with this sandwich, it was like they were fried and sitting there all day so soggy we tossed that whole to go order. We went to nugget and got dessert and I drove my mom home. Best part was the dessert and it wasn't even from this restaurant. Lol What a huge disappointment...not worth the price, and unless they stop being so cheap, and make the necessary changes like having items available which are on their menu, and even hire more help their not going to make it... I will not waste any more money here and cannot recommend this place to anyone who wants authentic Vietnamese Food; there are better options elsewhere or your own kitchen. read more

I've been looking forward to try this place since hearing about it and I was not disappointed! The only reason I'm given them 4 stars instead of 5 stars is because the Banh mi isn't too packed. The Banh mi does come with wonton soup and kabocha fries which were both delicious! The presentation of the dishes is nice as well as the interior of the restaurant.
