As a second visit came along for me. I was hoping be better and it has, The pho is where its at. I am still little suspicious on the egg rolls they serve. and Fish sauce wasn't very sweet either. It was crowded today, so don't expect service to be great, just for having them be opening for only couple weeks. They have gotten better at it. What a disappointed today.. This WAS my favorite pho place and now I have to look for another one. Where do I start. ... My friend and I got seated at a booth and upon seating, we noticed that it was infested with fruit flies and flies so we moved ourselves to a different table. Then I had to flag the waiter to take our order and get some water. After waiting and waiting for our food.. He got my friend order wrong and the soup was cold, it has been sitting there. That wasn't the bad stuff. For ppl that eat pho, they know that they get veggies on the side, well our cilantro had fly larva on one of the leaf, yes, fly larva!!!! How disgusting is that!!! That wasn't all, I had a take out order and I was told at the cash that take out order cost more cause it was a harder set up. Wtf!! I went to Pho So 1 with my family for lunch. We love Vietnamese food but did not have a great experience. First of all the restaurant was not very clean. The booths were all torn up, the floor had food all over it and the bathroom stunk and was not clean. In the first minute of sitting down two different people came and tried to rush us to order. We ordered our food and it came out one plate at a time and they kept forgetting to bring us items we had ordered. I had the grilled chicken vermicelli. The chicken was dry and it was basically a huge bowl of dry noodles with no flavor. The Pho we ordered was good but the beef fried rice my kids had was very bland. The servers were not very friendly at all. Overall we were very disappointed and will not be back. read more

I got the fried egg rolls, the pho number 1 special, and coconut juice here. Although the "special" isn't on the menu, it's still an option to order. The only difference I noticed between the special and the regular is that he special had the meatballs (they tastes a lot like hot dogs). The flavor of the pho was very good, I usually have to eat my pho with vinegar but this dish had enough flavor that I was able to order it and eat it as is. The fried egg rolls were also very good. They were crispy and the taste was savor. The only thing is that they don't cut the fried egg rolls in half... which is good if you just want to eat it all yourself and not share (like me). I've been here twice and both times the service was horrible. Not only did we get seated and then ignored for 20 minutes with no water and utensils. It's been an hour with no food. We were seated before other people and the others behind us ordered before, got water before and their food before us. I don't know what is going on with this place. This place has Pho of course plus other standard Vietnamese dishes such as Com Thit Nuong. The food is pretty good. However the service needs work. Most of the time the service is quick and efficient but lacking in friendliness. There was a specific issue which caused me to no longer go to this location. I ordered black iced coffee and got iced coffee with condensed milk. I told the server to take it back. When I went to pay, I told the manager and not only did she not apologize, she yelled out to the server to confirm that he in fact did take back the coffee. Then she promptly ordered the server to give the coffee to another customer - the same coffee that I already handled. I am sure that is against some type of health code. read more

Prices on the menu are different from what they actually charge. Before you pay, ask for your receipt and check what they charged you for. I ordered 3 small tai, 1 egg roll, 1 spring roll, 2 thai tea, and 1 soda- the cashier confirmed the details with me and gave me a total. I asked to see the pre-receipt and when I checked, she charged 1 large pho and 1 soda EXTRA! Seriously!?!?! Just returned from having Pho at Pho So 1. It was seriously lacking flavor and heat (spice). I had to add a TON of spices from the table everything from a small jar of pepper sauce to sriracha to additional jalapeno. I would have added more basil and cilantro if it had been provided. I was grabbing for anything at the table to try to improve things. I also like Pho that has more than just the protein and onion. There was nothing in it or accompanying except the usual bean sprouts, jalapeno, basil and cilantro. I like it better when there are vegetables. However, regardless of what was included, everyone at the table agreed it just wasn't very good. It wasn't terrible. But, I wouldn't go back. read more

Place is very large. Food is good. I go for lunch pretty often and it seems to be busy, but too much so, as there are always tables available. Went last night to pick up something for dinner. Meal was $8.00, but credit ticket was for $18. Luckily I looked first, so asked about it. To my surprise and horror there is an $8.50 take out charge. What??!!??? They had 2 tables occupied in the entire place at 6:30 pm and were willing to turn me away for an $8.50 takeout fee. I just walked away. Very disappointed. This place was my go to spot for quick, delicious food. However ever since the owner change, I don't frequent as much...and most definitely not returning after what happened on 8/17. We were done with dinner around 8:15, which is ample time before the 9pm closing time. I went up to pay and order two boba teas to go, and the boy running the register told me to hold on so he can go ask the girl if she can make them. She said no...which I suppose I WANT to try to understand why business was turned away when there was 45 minutes until closing time. The circumstances that irked me the most was the fact they had this exchange in Khmer.....And I understood every single word said, but they thought I was Chinese and didn't understand anything. Their mistake! This woman goes to say how she doesn't want to "clean the blender" and "tell the light skin Chinese girl we're not serving it at this time." Meanwhile I go back to my table to gather my stuff and she walks out with a boba tea in her hand to give it another customer who was also Cambodian. Discrimination within the Asian community is rampant, I know that. But next time don't assume a person isn't a certain Asian ethnicity and proceed to talk about them blatantly, because at this day and age, you never know. One of our friends recommended this place to us about a year ago and we have been coming here at least once a week since then. The servers there are very polite, and one of them is very friendly, funny, and funnily sarcastic (if that's even a word). They also bring out the food pretty fast, once you order, the food is probably out in ten minutes or less when it is not packed but not a lot of people in it either, it's probably twenty mins when it is full. The food there is amazing, personally when I go there, I get the number seventeen chicken pho, and it has not failed to impress. The broth is hot and flavorful, they give a LOT of chicken with it, the noodles are cooked perfectly most of the time, and they also give a plate of herbs and add ons that you can put in the broth yourself. They also have good bubble tea smoothies in many flavors and a few exotic flavors as well. My favorite is the green tea. My family loves Pho So 1 and it is probably one of my favorite restaurants (I even chose to eat here as my birthday dinner). read more

I've been coming here for years. I used to go to their old location, back in college, but this spot is closer to my house. The flavor of the pho broth, and their shrimp and pork rice paper rolls, are so good. It was good enough to make me not care about the lack of service. But service and cleanliness have taken a steep decline over my last several visits. The majority of the staff ignores you (always standard but gotten worse) or makes you feel like you feel unwelcome. Their service was always lacking but, recently, their staff has started treating customers like their presence is a total inconvenience. Floors are noticeably grimy. Tables, cups, and condiments are spotty/filmy/sticky. And, my last visit, our spring rolls were brought out with a bug crawling on the plate. The staff member noticed it, as they arrived at the table, and promised to bring a new one. However, it took less than 30 seconds for them to bring a replacement. Everyone at the table agreed that the order couldn't have been remade in that time. They probably just swiped the bug off the plate and returned it to our table. Pretty nasty! Needless to say, I'm too grossed out to go back now. It's a shame. Their pho was my favorite in Richmond. read more

I read the Yelp reviews and they were mixed but I was interested in their egg noodle soup so I decided to try it. And, it was ok. I went for lunch, and I ordered ahead of time so that I would not have to wait. I was told that my food would be ready in fifteen minutes. I got to the restaurant twenty minutes later and it was not crowded, so I knew that my food was ready. Not only was my order of Banh Canh (noodles with roast pork and shrimp soup) not ready, but I was told that it would take another ten minutes. So, finally I got my order and the aroma from the bag was great. I got back to work to eat and the temperature of my food went to below room temperature (mind you, my office is less than ten minutes away from the restaurant). So, I had to warm it up in the microwave oven. The shrimp soup tasted like chicken soup, but the pork was tasty. I think that I got shorted on the shrimp soup. The price ($8.25) was average for lunch, but I expected more from a noodle shrimp soup, and a few more pieces of pork would have been nice. I doubt if I will return. read more

Go to the rigsby road one! It's amazing. I get this one when the other is closed but i got the worst meal from there today. I got the most dry pork ive ever had from a restaurant, horribly disappointed. The wonton soup has too much sesame oil and the wontons are soggy with barely any material in there. Pho So 1 (Vietnamese Fast Food ) on West Broad was still a disappointment. Recently in my last two visits I found the quality of the food adequate but less than it use to be. I ordered the BBQ pork and shrimp with vermicelli with crispy egg rolls. There methods of economizing are what has reduced the quality of the meal. The egg rolls they made so pencil thin you couldn't taste the pork filling all you tasted was the crispy wrapper. If they want to reduce the size us smaller wrappers. The same with the pork with using a slicer they cut the meat so paper thin that when Quick grilled on hot surface it shrivels up and you have something that resembles jerky in texture and no amount of bbq sauce makes up for that. the two shrimp included not only had an off taste but were so tough as to have been cooked twice, which considering the meal was brought out a little over 5 minutes after I placed my order it's possible. The restaurant is spacious but I wonder if the cost is worth the sacrifice in the quality of food. Their Pho broth is very good I would recommend sticking with that. In my opinion it is the Vietnamese equality to fast food. If your looking for a richer flavor of Vietnamese cuisine travel down to Broad and Horsepen their prices are comparable. Pho So 1 is like a few of the other Vietnamese resteraunts investing in the décor and size at the expense of the food. read more

Take my advice and don't come here, it's filthy. This was the closest pho restaurant near my house, I dined here every now and then, but today was the last time. Service was whatever, I didn't expect anything from them, I was only here for the pho. However I was really disgusted today, I was sat at the corner booth seat near the tv, and as usual I ordered a small #1, waited for about 10mins and it came out. I reached over to get chopsticks and spoon that's stationed on the table, a group of flies launched off from the utensils and sauce. I screamed in shock, it was unbelievable. Isn't there some sort of regulation where they have to clean them at least once a week if not everyday? Imagine how dirty their kitchen must be. This place needs to be shut down and get cleaned up before they serve food to customers again. Actually they shouldn't even be allowed in restaurant business. I will not set foot in this place again, I much rather drive all the way downtown for a bowl of pho. read more
