I come here as the food is decent. I am all about supporting small businesses and I really don't like to leave negative reviews. BUT, the guys attitude is what keeps me from NOT coming here. As always, the pho broth is uniquely sweet and full of flavor! The Vietnamese coffee is always made fresh, brewed on your own table. The people are always super friendly and nice, and they introduced the super hot chili oil to us this time around. As someone who is very good with heat, the oil did have a solid kick to it, and the garlic in the sauce was also very fragrant. But it changes the flavor of the pho broth quite a lot, so if you're a first timer I would recommend just enjoying the pho by itself. If you are ready for some heat and for a change of pace, ask for the chili oil! read more

I've come here twice now and enjoyed both times. I usually get take out because the space is small and always crowded when I come. Theh are very fast with the orders and I usually can get my food 10 minutes after I call in. I've tried the rare steak pho which had very delicious broth, the spring rolls which always taste fresh and are perfect on a warm day, and the last time I went I tried the chicken wings which were really crunchy and had good flavor. read more

Very good. Small place and busy lunch crowd. We arrived before all the tables were taken. There were customers waiting and now I know why. I had the medium combination. After I fixed up my soup with all the toppings, hoisin, chili etc it was on! I had to ask for fish sauce though. My guest had the chicken and rice lunch. She enjoyed it. They fully tell you before you order, but apparently this is atypical of a Vietnamese restaurant 2. "Grilled shrimp" was listed as such on the menu, described by the server to have been fried then grilled. What I saw was deep friend shrimp with the poop/intestinal track still in half of them. Overall, I know that people like their quick 'n' dirty service at a low price point. For the San Ramon/Danville area, it is certainly a divey gem that is hard to find. I would come here again but probably only stick to really traditional Vietnamese food (pho, bahn mi, grilled pork). read more

I normally don't bother to leave negative reviews if a restaurant's food doesn't taste as good since I think that's just a preference issue and I can just go elsewhere next time. However, I feel obligated to write this one to notify others because the food they serve here is a potential safety hazard. I ordered the fried prawns and grilled pork vermicelli with a side of an egg roll, my husband had the combination pho, and we shared an order of spring rolls. I'm a big fan of the Vietnamese pickled radish and carrots; however, the first thing I noticed when I opened my food box was the yellowish color of the pickles, which I had never experienced at other Vietnamese places. I found it odd, but decided to give it a try and the pickles, which should have been cold and refreshing, seemed like they had been sitting at room temperature for a long time. They were on top of my cold vermicelli noodles and not touching anything hot, so other foods warming up the pickles definitely wasn't the case. Since I picked up my food as soon as the restaurant opened, it had me wondering for how long the pickles were sitting out.. overnight? Who knows. And of course, it tasted really off as well, like it had been fermented for ages. After the first bite, I did not touch it. I was saddened that I couldn't enjoy my meal with the pickled radish and carrots, as I always do when I eat Vietnamese food. And the fried prawns.. what's up with their food all having this yellowish tint?! I didn't think much of it at first, but it smelled a little weird but it could have been the smell from the fish sauce so I took a bite of the fried prawn. It was not crispy but rather soggy.. and I don't think fried prawns were supposed to taste like.. stinky feet. The prawns either had gone bad or were on the verge of going bad. I tried another without the fish sauce and it still had the stinky, off-putting smell and flavor, so I spat it out and tossed the remainder. So gross! The side of an egg roll I ordered cost $2.50 so I thought they were going to give the fat, juicy kind.. but no, it was skinny, and not hot at all - it was lukewarm and some parts were even cold. Totally wasted my money on this one too. But at least the egg roll, the sh*t ton of noodles they gave, the lettuce in the noodles weren't rotten. What a low bar for a restaurant.. The grilled pork was meh because it was a bit dry. I had to toss much of my food anyways so I mostly ate the grilled pork which seemed safer to eat. The spring rolls.. they were fine (not spectacular) but had shrimp in them so I felt nervous the whole time I was eating them, since they used bad prawns for the fried ones. My husband's pho was okay, and the broth was flavorful but quite salty. He finished the noodles and the meat but had to throw away the broth as the flavor was just too much. I'm pregnant so I'm more careful about my food these days, and today's meal was such an unnerving experience. I really hope that I don't get sick later. If you are expecting or do not like getting food poisoning, PLEASE STAY AWAY from this place. They do not use fresh ingredients or properly store their food. You will be much better off going to Pho Hoa which is just 5 minutes from this place. My biggest regret today is not going to Pho Hoa which I know is pretty good and instead, feeling adventurous and trying Pho Sam. My rating is solely based on their food handling practices, but on a side note, their customer service is nonexistent (don't expect to be greeted with a smile.. but maybe expect to get blank stares from the guys working there; they don't hand you the food- you're kind of supposed to know the food they left on one of the tables is yours), and the restaurant has a very sad atmosphere. read more

Came around 3:40 PM. It was pretty empty (high chance it was due to the time I came in). The service was good; I ordered the XL combination pho with a side of egg rolls. The egg rolls are not very big but they are pretty good as an appetizer. Pho was good that I would come again if I am ever hungry for pho. The price matches the location (San Ramon) meaning it is definitely a little higher then what I normally spend money on pho. I would order the pho again for the price but probably not the egg rolls. read more

Such an underrated pho spot -- been coming here for years so I can't believe I'm only writing a review about it now. It is kind of a hole in the wall, but I think it's the best pho in San Ramon/Dublin. We usually get the combination pho, a rice plate, or a vermicelli bowl, all of which are solid. Take out during COVID has been really simple, food has been ready ~10-15 minutes after calling in and everything is packaged safely. Our items have always been put in a cardboard box which made it really easy to carry to the car. I also think the price point is fair and reasonable. Support your local businesses and order here (except on Sundays because they're closed) if you're craving some savory, hot, pho soup! read more

Rude customer service, and inconsistency of their food, it's obvious to me they are cutting corners. I ordered 2 crisp noodles for my 2 kids, kids had it before and liked it. But today, when the noodles came, one dish has significantly less sauce than the other. They gave us 1 portion sauce for 2 orders needles. When addressing this issue, they didn't care to fix it. My 8yrs old daughter keeps asking me if she can have more sauce, it was hard for me to watch my little girl can't enjoy her food. Thank you for putting my faith back into Pho in the East Bay. There is a place that I went one time close to work and after going there, I lost faith in Bay area Vietnamese food. Especially since just moving here. However! Since another introduction to Pho Sam, I was floored how busy this place was and how good it was. It's tucked away off of San Ramon Valley with the closest cross street as Crow Canyon. Pho isn't too difficult to make but good pho is all in the tenderness of the meat and the soup. To make really good soup requires some skill. There are only like twelve tables or so, so be prepared to wait. I'll have to check with the owner but if they can do GF too, this will be awesome. Came here on a whim for a quick lunch break with a colleague and was pleasantly surprised! Finding quality and authentic cuisine that isn't part of some-sort of fusion or recent food trend is tough in this area, so when we came here I knew I hit a diamond-in-the-rough! Pho Sam has a very "hole-in-the-wall" ambiance, but is actually right next to Fresh Millions so during a weekday lunch hour finding parking can be tough (Yelper beware)! If you come during peak hours be prepared to circle the parking lot waiting for people to leave. My go to order is Pho Tai (rare beef). I found the broth to be very flavorful and soothing especially on a nice cold day or when you're either sick or let's be real....hungover. They have a lot of regulars that come in often and service here is pretty good overall. I'll have to say though it did feel more welcoming when you dine in versus ordering take out, but understandably the lunch rush was about to begin but just food for thought! If you do decide to do a take out order, it is prepared pretty fast and they wrap up your soup, noodles, and meat with all the fixings for you in a nice bag and you're set to jet to eat your meal at home, in the office, or wherever you plan to dine! tldr; Good pho spot overall, especially for the area. Came during COVID for the first time and the food was solid. I appreciate that the menus were under glass on the tables so we didn't have to touch them at all. The staff was friendly and fast (For the good pho restaurants, I'm used to unfriendly and fast) Growing up in Sunnyvale/San Jose with tons of Vietnamese friends and a plethora of restaurants I've had more than my fair share of pho. Is there more broth than noodles? Do the veggies look fresh? Is the broth clear or does it look greasy? Is the meat sliced evenly? These are important but MY standard for a pho place is the iced coffee...is it brought out with the coffee filter or does it come out premade? Pho Sam delivers with the filter and it's sooo good! Did I really expect to get a "SJ quality" pho spot in SR? I didn't but I was happily surprised to get the delicious food without the grimey feeling. I had the pork chop and it was flavorful, nicely charred and a good portion. My husband had the shaking beef, he said it tasted good but he was disappointed it didn't have tomato rice and I wish I had broken rice but...not worth deducting a star for that. We happened to be in San Ramon today and craved for some Vietnamese food. We ordered about 15minutes ahead of time and food was ready when we got there. Very good quality and quantity. We will definitely go back for sure. We had the Rare Beef Pho and Pawn/Grilled chicken Vermicelli. We were too hungry so I forgot to take a picture. Happy that there is a pho place so close to work - and it's not half bad! Perfect for those cloudy days or when you're feeling a bit sick. The guy who runs the restaurant is hilarious. Can't quite put my finger on precisely why but he's fun. Service is quick and efficient. Pho is good. Broth is pretty tasty. Rare steak is usually really good (I've gotten some pretty chewy pieces a couple of times though). Boyfriend did not enjoy their brisket - said something about their flavor so I recommend trying at least once to see what you think. Only service sizes medium and large. If you're small like me, there is no small. Be prepared to leave with a bloated tummy. Parking is limited (shares a small lot with a few other places) so be prepared at the lunch hour. You may have to wait but the turnover is quick (as are most Vietnamese places). I also noticed they sell viet sandwiches. I got to get my hands on one of those next time I stop by.
