We love Pho Sam, we won't go anywhere else!! BEST homemade broth EVER! The food is always fresh, made to order. My favorite is chicken and shrimp pho, we get rare beef pho as well. In the summer I love the vermicelli bowls with grilled pork. Fresh spring rolls with peanut sauce are a must too. Fast, friendly service. The owner is quirky but very caring and always remembers us. I guess that makes us regulars! You can tell he wants to make the customers happy and do whatever he can to keep us coming back. Excellent owner, food and business. Sorry, but I don't think this place is a four star place, this place is probably a two star place and at most a three star. The pho was not good like all the other reviews have indicated, this is probably the one of the least tasty pho restaurants I have ever been to. The broth was not hot, and the ingredients was not fresh. I just moved into the area, and really wanted pho so bad so I gave this place a try since it has one the top reviews, but it was a disappointment. Also, the restaurant's environment is a little old. The place is very small but usually pretty busy. It's nothing fancy being in a shopping center but the food is good. This pho is on the sweeter side but always yummy especially when I'm not feeling 100%. The Thai iced tea is yummy too and the price isn't too bad for pho. read more

Pho Sam is more like Pho Sad. One thing that irks me is when I go to a restaurant and kids are running around and the parents do nothing. But what made things worse is that Pho Sam is a small restaurant and the kids running around were the children of an employee. It's crazy how the workers did nothing to stop the kids from running around in the restaurant and in the kitchen! Imagine if a kid got poked by a sharp object like a knife in the kitchen or had knocked over a customer's pho? Instant lawsuit = No soup for you. Moreover, the tall Asian man server was like a real-life soup nazi. He would slam the water cups down, slam the utensils down, and slam the food down. Normally, I'd be ambivalent with this behavior since bad service Asian restaurants usually make up for this with awesome food. However, the food at Pho Sam did not make up for this slammer mammer jammer. On Saturday, October 5th at 2:30 PM (hey business owner, go check the camera feed and check out the kids running around - you might even see my angry face) we ordered an eggroll appetizer, a large pho tai, and a grilled pork vermicelli bowl. The food came out all at once. The egg rolls were freaking mini-sized and looked nothing like the menu photo. In the menu, they show three egg rolls with decent length and girth served with an assortment of vegetables. Sadly, the actual egg rolls were pencil-sized and were served on top of one piece of lettuce. I was disappointed the way many women are after an unpackaging, except Pho Sam doesn't have a friendly personality. LOL. Then, I took a look at the pho tai which means pho with rare beef. The beef that came out was well-done as if it were made for an orange clown. On top of that, the broth tasted watered down. Maybe it's for the San Ramon demographic, but the pho was disappointing. The grilled pork vermicelli was meh as well. I'm used to tons of veggies when eating Vietnamese food, not just iceberg lettuce and carrots. On top of that, the pork tasted off. At the end of the day, I wasted $30 at this over-rated restaurant that has been steadily raising their prices. I came in with low expectations because I do not expect "phonomenol pho" in San Ramon. However, this placed went below even my low expectations. De-friending everyone that gave this place 5 stars. read more

Little family owned shop across the street from regal crow canyon and next to Fresh Millions. Had the combo pho medium size ($10.45) They have outdoor tables in the front that are covered by the building awning which is great for covid. The condiments were on the outdoor tables. Menu is on the table under the plexiglass. No-nonsense place to come get your pho on. Plenty of parking. read more

This place was great. I eat a LOT of Pho. I'm not often in San Ramon, so this was my first time here. As others have stated the Broth for their pho is super flavorful. I liked that they added fried shallots to the soup. And I ESPECIALLY LIKED that, for three dollars more, you can add Bok Choy and Broccoli to your soup, cresting a really complete meal in a bowl (and not just carbs and protein, but actually leafy greens as well.) I will definitely go back the next time I'm in San Ramon. Great little spot. PS: Super fast service! My bowl came out maybe three minutes after I ordered it. Imagine our disappointment upon walking up to the door, hungry & excited to add a new pho place into our rotation, when we found a printed sign saying they're closed "for the holiday" (beginning today, 12-21-24) and will reopen on 12:30-24. PLEASE -- AVOID THIS PLACE. I'm pretty sure many of these reviews are not genuine. This is the second time I ordered from them. First time, they served me shrimp rolls that had gone bad. I didn't bother complaining because I thought it was a fluke and just one dish had gone bad out of 5. I didn't want to bother. However, I ordered from them again (huge mistake) because the one I usually go to was closed. I ordered vegetable noodle soup, vegetable spring rolls, and chicken rice here tonight and went in to pick it up. First of all, the place is FILTHY (first time going into the restaurant vs. delivery) -- I was appalled. The bok choy in the noodle soup was yellow and wilted, rubbery, and tasted awful (see pic next to jalapeño for color reference). The tofu in the soup had turned and gone bad, and the tofu in the spring roll has also gone bad. I called to complain and the rude owner did not care and claimed there was nothing wrong with the food and hung up on me. Restaurants with poor quality control like this is how one can get food poisoning. There are better places near by including the one across the street from them. Called in an order for pickup and let me say, this was the quickest call I've ever had, lol. No total amount was given, no pickup time and no name confirmation, just took my order and hung up. I laughed, mainly bc of the shock, but also figured the orders weren't flowing in like normal and what are the odds someone else orders the exact same order as me. I gave it 10 minutes and headed over. As expected, they only had one couple outside and my order was packaged up and ready to go in an easy to carry box. Unfortunately, I was sad to see that they still use styrofoam containers. We order a pair of Spring Rolls, a medium Chicken Noodle Pho and the Pork and Rolls over Vermicelli. The Spring Rolls are simple and not as "done-up" like every other roll we order. They use iceberg lettuce instead of the deep green leaf lettuce I normally see. The rolls also don't have the extras like mint or basil, thin cucumber slices or julienned carrots for pops of color. The peanut sauce was thick and I have a feeling this may not be made in-house. The man usually devours his noodle bowl but had leftovers. He said it was okay; not the best he's had but didn't elaborate. I ordered the pho and was pleased to see the fresh ingredients. Nice white chicken breast sliced about 1/2 cm thick; bright green, fresh springs of Basil; deep green and crisp slices of jalapeños... I was surprised to see bokchoy leaves and broccoli florets thrown in, but I didn't necessarily hate it and enjoyed the extra boost of green veggies. Regarding overall taste, I too thought this was okay, and wasn't blown away by my meal. A little let down after seeing the 4 stars on Yelp. I will say that the guy who took my order also cashed me out. He was funny, talkative and even offered to help me carry my box to my car. Don't know how it has taken me this long to review this bomb pho stop!! Just devoured this for lunch and am feeling extremely satisfied as I write this :) Placed an order for pickup for 2 Large Rare Beef Pho Bowls (#19) which is the usual for us and I highly recommend. The guy on the phone was super quick, and said it would be ready in 5 mins!! That kind of speed is unheard of for take out! Went to pick up the food right away and the pickup process was very streamlined with covid. There is plenty of parking in this plaza so don't worry about coming early to find a spot. The food was in a big cardboard box full of all the toppings and sides ready to go! Super convenient for transporting it back in the car without having 5 different bags of soup flying all over the place. For 2 pho large bowls, which feeds 3+ people at my house as we aren't the biggest eaters, the total was about $22...can't beat it. The rare beef comes wrapped separately in nice thin slices which is super tender and fresh. It cooks right up in piping bc hot broth, so if you pick up food to go I recommend reheating the broth to make it super super hot before tossing the meat in! They also give lots of toppings pre-bagged and ready to toss in. Wish we would have asked for more cilantro, mint, onion +green onion mix -- we always run out! My friends and I hiked at Mt Diablo then hit up phosam for food afterwards. I ordered a chicken pho medium-sized (came out to ~$9/$10 after tax) and it really hit the spot. The chicken was ok; not super juicy but also not super dry. The broth was *amazing* and made the meal: flavorful, warm, and a fantastic complement to the delicious noodles in the soup. I ordered a standard vermicelli bowl with chicken and egg roll (0/10) and was very disappointed in the meal. -The chicken was a strange yellow color and tasted and had the texture of frozen, reheated meat. Weirdly dry for a typical chicken thigh. The actual flavor was also just not good, it had a really weird off putting aftertaste. -The noodles were the standard vermicelli noodles but I had some weird really dry chunks. Not uncooked dry, but dry as if parts of the noodle had been exposed to air for too long and dehydrated again. -the egg roll was also beyond mediocre, it was heavy on the mushroom which is guess some places are like that but for the most part, theyre not. I am not a mushroom person so maybe that's also just a personal bias but it had a strong mushroom texture and flavor. Also an important note is that they only give 1 roll even though the standard seems to be 2 for most restaurants but the dish is cheaper here so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (Not pictured because I tossed it to the side) -the SAUCE was also just terrible with it. Typically this dish comes with a side of standard fish sauce which is what really ties everything together since the noodles are just blanched and placed in the container below everything else. The sauce here tasted like it was diluted thai chili sauce with a splash of fish sauce and it had a really unappetizing sour flavor. 1 extra star because the service was fast and it was cheap but really not worth it since I couldn't finish past 3 bites even though I was starving. The weird sauce in combination with everything else being lackluster really killed it for me and I would not recommend this dish to anyone especially since there are other Vietnamese spots in the area with a better version of the dish. read more

I am so happy to have found this place in San Ramon. They open at 10:30am, with a very friendly waiter and their pho was delicious! I ordered the following: Beef, Tri and Tendon Pho ($8): The broth was perfect, not salty and you can taste the delicious anise star. The tendon, tripe and beef were cooked perfectly. Not too soft or too hard, just perfect. Spring rolls ($6): It was stuffed with pork, shrimp, lettuce and rice noodle. I was hesitant since it was $6 but the size of the rolls were definitely worth $6. So light and delicious. I'm looking forward to going to this place again when I'm in Northern California. read more

We wanted to try out a new pho place. We ordered a rice plate, vermicelli bowl, pho, and spring rolls to-go. Food was ready fast and it was packaged nicely for pick-up. I wasn't a fan of the vermicelli bowl. The chicken was dry and not very flavorful. Noodles and veggies were alright, didn't taste very fresh. The fish sauce couldn't even redeem any of it. Overall, not very much flavor. My dad's rice plate wasn't too much of a hit either. He said his pork was dry and also had no flavor. Salad and rice were fine. My mom said the pho was good. She got a regular sized chicken pho and it looked/smelled decent. The only thing I really liked were the spring rolls. Those were tasty. Shrimp and meat were good, veggies were crisp and fresh, rice paper was chewy, and the peanut sauce was delicious! Next time, I will try the pho and stick with the spring rolls. read more
