Updates review for Pho Sam: As of my review, Pho Sam has changed ownership and has completely remodeled the restaurant to make it more trendy and welcoming. The menu now includes a bunch of fruity/sweet drinks too. We came here several times for lunch and are huge fans of their grilled meat dishes: The Vermicelli dishes are excellent - meaty, juicy chicken or thinly-sliced, savory grilled pork. Both were great. I like the ratio of veggies, noodles, to meat and appreciate the peanuts for added crunch. The pork chop rice is also pretty good, and comes with cooked veggies. A great dish for sharing. They do have a single, small but clean bathroom in the back, though you'll need to walk through the kitchen. 5 stars. Came here since my boyfriend and I were craving Pho. It's conveniently located in a plaza with plenty of parking. Also looks like it's under new ownership and they were offering free thai tea or soft drink when we went. The staff was very nice and welcoming. The interior of the restaurant was relatively simple and clean, but the only issue I had was the table we chose (closest to the register/counter) had a couple ants crawling on them. We ended up moving closer to the door since I wasn't sure if there were a lot more ants around the table and wanted to avoid that. We both ended up getting beef pho with different meat combinations. The portion size was decent and the price seemed reasonable, but I found the broth to be alright and probably more on the bland side compared to other places, but still decent. The meat was slightly more chewy and tougher that I'd like, but it was also alright. So, we come back regularly to our favorite restaurant. We have tried many different meals off the menu, and all were very good. The quality is excellent. The pho broth is homemade. I have had pho in many,many restaurants, and Pho Sam is the best in my opinion. Stopped by quickly to pick up 2 grilled pork banh mi and decided to try the banh xeo. Service is lovely as usual. I ordered to go and I love that the owner asked if I wanted some water while I waited. I love that they marked "not spicy" on one of the banh mi to differentiate which sandwich was which. I hate to leave such a negative review especially when it's a family business but there's just so many things that happened during my first visit that went wrong. My sister and I had a pedi date for a late Mother's Day gift and wanted to eat something nearby. I read the positive reviews, the "authenticity" of their pho and how good their broth was so I hella excited to try this spot. Upon entering, my sister and I were the only customers initially which always makes me a little apprehensive. My pops always said if you don't know where to eat follow the people/where it's crowded. It's not a huge restaurant but they still had a decent amount of seating. First off, the table we sat at didn't have all the condiments like the other tables so I had to wait to get the waiters attention. And then these 2 women who were coming in back and forth from outside were making comments about how good the chili hot sauce was. I hate to say it, but it was disappointing. Then I realized oh I guess they work here and one of them must be the owners because they both walked to the back and started taking orders from another customer that came in???? I asked one of them for ice and she forgot on multiple occasions. It was frustrating because I needed to drink water ASAP to wash down the pho I ate. The broth was so cloudy and murky it was like they didn't collect any of the scum that rises to the top or it was like I got served the bottom of the pot?! Absolutely would not order this again. I had to force myself to eat it and I just ate the meat tbh. I also ordered banh xeo which is one of my favorite Vietnamese dishes to share with my sister. It was edible but the fillings or the whole thing rather really had no seasoning?! The best I could do was drench it in the fish sauce. And that's not all, because my sister said her vermicelli was fine we ordered take out for my husband and my sister's kids. This man came out from the kitchen and handed us our takeout with the bag closed. I told my sister to double check it. Of course the spring rolls are missing... I tell dude and he acts like he's in disbelief and says "it's not in there?" I tell him he can check himself. He looks and goes, oh yeah it'll be ready soon? Like what. Ok? I could've easily left without it had I not had her double check. I was annoyed, but I had to use the bathroom. I asked for directions... he points straight back to the kitchen. THE BATHROOM IS LITERALLY IN THE KITCHEN. It's literally in the same space. With the door directly opening into the same room where food is being prepared. I wanted to throw up. There was no hallway or barrier leading to the bathroom. When I opened the bathroom door the first thing I noticed was the dishwasher but never again. And it still gets worse!!! My sister made it very clear she wanted no peanuts on the vermicelli orders because her daughters are allergic. The minute we got home to Walnut Creek we realized there were PEANUTS on BOTH orders. My sister was able to get partially refunded. I honestly think the whole order should have been refunded at that point. The woman was really friendly but I can't justify giving a higher rating based off my experience. I won't be coming back. read more

Came here at lunch time, and it was empty!? Thats peculiar! Oh boy what a mistake I made by ordering. First I'll start with the pricing...Damn! How much?! ( ). Egg rolls ( 2 for $7.95 ) wtf. The "Original Pho Sam" gave 3 egg rolls and they were chicken. I appreciated that he had chicken egg rolls and not pork because I don't eat pork. But today I accidentally did with my first bite then spit out and tossed the rest. ‍ Next $17.95 for a rice plate...! Continuing on chicken pho ok n/p but $2 more for a large ...greedy. My wife and I absolutely love this place! We first visited about two weeks ago, and since then we've already come back at least four times. Not only has the food been consistently great, but the staff/owners, Thu and Long, have been incredibly welcoming, kind, and caring. Honestly, we keep coming back because of the warm hospitality and the quality and consistency of the food. I learned from Thu and Long that they've only been operating for about 3-4 months. With their wonderful customer service and really good food, I have full confidence they'll revive this establishment. Also, shoutout to Thu for recommending the Bánh xèo! It's crispy, golden, and filled with shrimp and bean sprouts, and served with lettuce, herbs, and an amazing dipping sauce. It's now our favorite thing to order every time we visit. Here is an update to my experience. I come to eat there at Pho Sam pretty much every week.. I look the menu over to try different dishes. I have not found any dislikes yet. One of my favorites is the clay pot dishes either chicken or shrimp. The crunchy rice at the bottom of the clay pot is out of this world!! The different veggies and colorful red and green bell peppers is a healthy choice. The Bah Mi sandwiches are another favorite with a perfect balance of the meat and veggies at a decent price! Can't go wrong for a quick lunch.. I have gone many times to other Pho restaurants hate to wait in line for a seat or table with the waiters not happy with their jobs. No smile at all. Makes you feel like they are not wanting to be there.. When my order is taken at Pho Sam it comes out very fast with smiling courteous service. The owners of this restaurant always ask me how is the dish I ordered. I give him or her the thumbs up! Definitely would let them know if i am not satisfied.. I don't ask for much other than good service with a smile and clean food preparation with authentic taste! I have had the owner come out and pass me a drink at no charge. That is very nice. Other restaurants I go to don't bother with any kind gestures. It is appreciated for sure. My family has gone there they are all happy with Pho Sam.. I noticed a customer saying she didn't like the bathroom by the kitchen area. Just keep in mind that the Health Department inspects restaurants regularly and especially before giving them a business permit. If they thought it was an issue they would not be open for business.. I have been in restaurants with no bathrooms and just simply need to wash my hands before eating. At least at Pho Sam has a really nice clean remodeled bathroom for the patrons.. Pho Sam is still one of the better pho joints in the Tri-Valley area. After a multi-year hiatus, my family and I came here for dinner on 11/30/2024 after shopping nearby. It was moderately busy when we walked in at 5:15pm. Since it was a cold evening, we opted to sit at the table closest to the cash register in the back. I was happy to see the same owner and his family running the operation. The interior was clean and had gone through an upgrade. There was a TV showing a college football game. The menu featured a wide array of typical Vietnamese fare found in any pho restaurant. We got three bowls of the #18 Combination Noodle Soup (2XL and 1L), plus some egg rolls and spring rolls to share. Our food took a while to come out because they were dealing with several large takeout orders. The two appetizers were decent, and the portions were commensurate with the price. The Combination Noodle Soup (pho dac biet) was very good. The broth was clear and had a nice hint of sweetness in it. Meat toppings were plentiful. The owner was friendly and the service we received was good. The total, with a tip, was about $72. We all thought it was worth it. If you want a good bowl of pho in the Tri-Valley area, keep this place in mind. I don't think you will be disappointed. 4 solid stars. i came in before closing and the owners were more than accommodating. i finished up pretty quickly around 8:05pm, even though the owner was so welcoming and didn't rush me out. i ordered the combo pho for dine in and pork chop over rice combo to go. i had really low expectations bc of the neighborhood but was very pleased that the pho broth tasted so clean and flagrant. the noodles were perfect, it was soft and so chewy at the same time which i loooove so much. the shop was small and looked newly remodeled. i love going to shops like these because i really appreciate that authentic family feel. also, most of the time, they taste way better than the big modern americanized pho restaurants lol the owner chatted w me n told me they recently took over ownership a few months ago. i hope more ppl in the neighborhood stop by to try them out. i really wish them nothing but luck in their new venture! highly recommend! read more

I cannot recommend the Bún Thịt Nướng Chả Giò (#54). The dish was poor, primarily due to the stale-tasting grilled pork. Not even sure how that is even possible. Maybe it's the taste of freezer burn? Anyway, the accompanying egg roll (chả giò) was tiny and severely under filled. Does not match photo on the menu. I was craving my favorite pho today, and, upon arrival, discovered that ownership had changed. We have been going to Pho Sam for more years than I can remember. From out first visit, our go to order has been the #21 (rare beef and beef ball pho) and the pork banh mi sandwich. We have raved about the broth to anyone who would listen. Unfortunately, the pho is not as good as before. The broth is oily, and has no depth of flavor. The quantity of meat is paltry, and the clumpy noodles were hard to eat. The banh mi was also a disappointment. More bread than filling. The service was good (hence the 3 star rating) so I hope the new owners can find their way, but until then we won't be back. read more
