My family has come here for years and the food is always delicous! I've never waited more than 15 minutes for food (probably even less) and the servers are always warm. However, I will say that meat portions have gone down. Size large still feeds two (even with big appetites) but the chicken is a little lacking. It's enough for one person. I live near Pho Dublin and eat there roughly once a week, but tried Pho Sam based on a friend's recommendation. It's located in a quiet strip mall and very unassuming. In comparison, the broth is more flavorful and the cuts of beef are thicker than what I usually get. The X-large bowl of pho is true to size. The waiter Long is friendly in a gruff way. Couple of negatives are that the store is very small (9 tables) and also closes too early for the dinner crowd. read more

For San Ramon, this is a pretty good pho joint. Family owned and operated, really nice to support small business owners. They were friendly, fast, and just nice folks all around. The pho stock was very good, not quite as rich as you would get in higher density Viet population communities, but again for San Ramon, I'd come here multiple times in a one week work trip. The pho noodles were cooked well with a little snap to it still. Nothing I hate worse than soggy limp noodles. The meats were nicely cooked and fresh (I ordered the Dac Biet). I had craving for some spring rolls so I figured to check out this place. Only ordered the spring rolls and spring roll wrap with egg rolls. spring rolls 2.5/5 It doesn't taste as good as other places. The noodles were cold. Tastes like it just came out of the fridge. Spring rolls with egg rolls 3/5 This one is interesting. Instead of shrimp they put egg roll in it. Sauces for both are standard. Maybe their Pho tastes better than their appetizers. My family and I have been coming to Pho Sam for almost 10 years and is hands down our favorite pho spot in the bay! Even when I moved out of town I would come here just to get my fix. It's a small hole in the wall joint and can get quite busy. The owners are so kind and even remember my order along with adjusting it how I like. Just had dinner at Pho Sam Restaurant. My family literally goes here every week. My husband is a picky eater overall but loves it here. He said that their broth is very delicious. Highly recommend!!! Catching with an old friend at this place. I had stopped by this place many years ago but didn't eat here. We were met with friendly server who offered a nice table outside. It was pleasant under the shade on this hot afternoon. I opted for the grilled chicken vermicelli bowl. It was served with the fish sauce. My water glass was filled frequently. The bowl had all the goodies, shredded carrots, bean sprouts, chopped nuts, noodles and chicken. It was good though not spectacular. The bowl was reasonably priced, service was pleasant and food was decent. It's a worthwhile visit if in the neighborhood and craving for Vietnamese food. read more

Affordable pricing for Vietnamese food. Currently they are not making their popular hot tiger shrimp on fried wonton wrappers since their wonton supplier no longer makes the wrappers, and the owner informed me that they don't want to serve that dish by substituting it with an inferior product. Apparently not all wonton wrappers are made the same or fry to the same crispness. So I ordered the #38 rice dish instead for lunch: Pork chop with shrimp. The restaurant is right next to a beer and bbq spot and is easy to miss since there is no signage on the roof or in the shopping plaza marquee. Plenty of parking and they seem to open until 7:30pm today (Friday). There is seating inside (about 6 tables of 4) and outside (2 patio tables seating 2 each). Recommended local spot for affordable Vietnamese food made by a family-owned restaurant that cares about the ingredients in their dishes. read more

Came here with friends after an early basketball tournament. We were starving. We came when they just opened so it was just us inside the restaurant. It was smaller than I expected, but don't let that fool you. Food came out in a very timely manner. The pho broth was so tasty! Didn't need to add any extra flavoring. All I did was add sriracha. Spring roll appetizer was small, but really good with their peanut sauce. Vietnamese iced coffee was really good! Prices aren't bad either! Server and I'm guessing the owner was really nice & funny! I have not been back for awhile, things seemed to have changed. They don't have Beef Ribs anymore, they were one of my favorite. The fried rice option (4 stars $4 extra) on the rice plate is still ready good, but on the to go box they only give 1 small cup of the sauce. They really should give the bigger cup they put in the to go box for the vermicelli plate. The meat quality seems to be different, my wife was not too fond of grilled pork on the vermicelli plate #54. The pork chop on my rice plate was just ok, but the fried shrimp were really good (4 stars) Maybe next time, I'll try the chicken rice plate. The Spring Rolls (4 Stars) are still good, freshly made served with peanut sauce. I add 1 packet of Sriracha to the peanut sauce, prefect for dipping the spring roll. This visit was just ok, dropped to 3 stars, maybe the last time, not sure. I haven't had Pho since December 2019 so this was a craving I've had for over a year and was happily satisfied with Pho Sam! They are only providing outdoor dining where it's nice and shady. Since it was my first time here, I only tried out #18. It was so delicious. The broth was so flavorful, and they give just the right amount of noodles:meat ratio. They have their sauces and toppings available but I didn't use any this time. I just wanted to enjoy the natural flavors of the soup. This is the first pho place I've tried out since moving here to San Ramon, and I'm so happy there's one that has satisfied my craving! Can't wait to come back when I want some more. read more

Crazy hidden hole in the wall that has super friendly staff and delicious pho. Food (9/10) - I was a bit sad because they didn't have bun bo hue but I just decided to get one of their beef pho with rare steak and beef ball. The noodles were a perfect al dente and had a nice flavor and spring; I think they might have been cooked in a bit of broth because they absorbed the flavor very nicely. The broth was super unique because of its sweet flavor. Overall, a delicious bowl of pho. Definitely a new go-to! Price (9/10) - One of the most lowest priced bowls I've seen in our current economy. A large is $13 and XL is only $15. Even the large was super filling and a generous portion. The price was super worth it for the size and taste. Service (10/10) - Super friendly guy running front of the house. He made conversation with all the tables and seemed to know his customers really well. I was pleasantly surprised with my pho. The broth had a creamy taste to it and was easy on the cinnamon. There was also a good meat to noodle ratio as well. The non pho items were less impressive. The pho came out very quickly. Our server was friendly, a lot more attentive than what I'm used to in ESSJ. We ordered pho for dine in and the other items to go. Pho dac biet- solid Vermicelli bowl w/ grilled beef- dry beef Shaking beef- Bo luc lac is usually my favorite, but the meat was very dry and tough. I do not recommend it here Banh mi- pork cake. Cha lua isn't for everyone, but it's my favorite meat for Vietnamese sandwiches. The slices were thicker than I prefer, but since I took it home- I just cut it up to adjust the size of my preference. All items were reasonably priced and generously portioned, although I do have qualms about styrofoam take out boxes. I highly recommend getting the pho here. There's a reason why it's called Pho Sam and not Bo Luc Lac Sam. read more

Nice little place in San Ramon. I had their Grilled Chicken Rice Plate. It was good. The chicken was cooked well. It was nice and tender with a little bit of crisp. I loved the fish sauce that it came it. It was nice and sweet with a hint of spice from the chili peppers. The dish also came with lettuce and pickle daikons and carrots. Loved that they provided the chicken and rice with some fiber and freshness. The rice was cooked nicely and presented well. Service was very efficient and friendly. I dare say that this place has one of the best pho. My boyfriend and I have been here 4-5 times and every time we order the #18 pho combination. Let me tell you - the broth is out of this world. Lightly sweetened, savory, BOMB.com. Normally I drink all my broth (because I was taught to) but I LOVE drinking my broth here. It's honestly one of the best I've had and you don't need to add the extra hoisin or sirchara to liven it up. It's just amazing. OH, and they also don't skimp out on the meat one bit. We've also tried their bun thit nuong (vermicelli dish) and their rice combo plate. It's not the best I've had but if you get any of those, get the combo with the shrimp in it. Pho Sam has been by neighborhood go-to for Takeout Pho this year. I'm always impressed with the quality and freshness of the meats and vegetables in their Combination Pho. I love their broth, and find myself happily slurping it up even after all my noodles and meat are finished. You can place an order by phone, and the Pho will be carefully packed in a neatly packed box along with Siracha/Hoisin, utensils, and Sprouts, basil, limes, and jalapeno for pickup. Pay by cash or card. The Pho is packed in Styrofoam containers to keep them warm. The noodles and meats are in their own separate container. Pho Sam provides a generous serving size which should satisfy even the biggets pho fans. I recommend warming the broth up in a big bowl it up for a minute or two in the microwave to get it really hot. That way the beef, and sprouts will cook nicely when you put them in. I love their beef balls, and usually get the combination pho. read more

One of the best pho places I've been to! And no, not just for San Ramon standards. I grew up in the area and this place has been a neighborhood favorite for 10+ years. Located in a small strip plaza, they have ample outdoor dining. At arrival, if it appears there is no more outdoor seating available, simply ask for a table and they'll bring an extra one out for you. The pho is really, really good, and the prices are reasonable (less than $10 a dish). I got the combination pho in small and I really wish I ordered a medium! My girlfriend order a vermicelli plate with prawn and beef, which was also very solid. What I love about the pho here is that the broth is extremely flavorful and silky, yet not too overpowering or salty. You would actually WANT to finish the broth after you are done eating your noodles. It's just so fresh. Also, they give a TON of meat. A lot of pho places skimp on the meat and give only a few pieces.. not here. They really are generous and give piles of meat. The noodle to meat ratio is on-point. Service is friendly and fast. It appears to be a family business with the parents in the back and son bussing tables. I also appreciated how they make customers go pick up their own plates/silverware if they wanted extra, instead of having the servers do it. Tl;dr- great pho at a relatively affordable price- family-owned, friendly service, recommend checking out if you're in the area! Location/atmosphere- 4/5 this spot is a hole in the wall tucked away just off 680, and surrounded by many more delicious eats like sushi and bingsoo in adjacent plazas. The restaurant venue itself is small, but does include a couple shaded tables outside for seating. Food- 4.5/5 I consider myself a pho connoisseur, having tried pho around the globe from San Jose, California, to the USA east coast, and even authentic Vietnamese pho in Hanoi & Saigon. The pho here is uniquely sweet (perhaps attributed to using chicken stock base), but is still accompanied with a pleasant, rich meaty flavor. I got the XL rare steak & tendon pho, and the noodle:meat ratio is fantastic, and has plenty of soup. Service- 5/5 the server is very friendly and great at explaining the menu and making recommendations for newcomers. There were also many appetizer options (including humongous tiger shrimp) that I will likely try next time. P.S.- they have this "super spicy Thai chili oil" that is made available upon request. However, we were disappointed in the portion size of the egg roll ($7) and the side of egg ($3). Both items were very small and not worth what we paid. The man with the buzz cut is the rudest person I've ever dealt with at a restaurant. We came in here to pick up a large order which my wife called over the phone. He didn't take any of our information before hanging up on us and then we called to tell him we were on our way, he started yelling at us??? We came in to pick up the box of food and this guy seriously continued to be disrespectful mainly to my wife because she was being sweet in return. I am seriously appalled. How can you act like that not only to a customer but to another person who is only kind in return? The quality of this food is not worth dealing with this horrible person. It's not even authentic Vietnamese food (I am Vietnamese for reference). There's better options a few miles down. Stay far away, this is an anti-business and not good Vietnamese food. read more

Man, pho sam, one of the restaurants I've been going to since I was only 10 years old. There hasn't been a day where I haven't wanted pho sam since I've moved to Santa Barbara. Every time I enter the store I am greeted by long, the owner. At first he may seem like an angry or rude man who isn't pleased to see you, but that's not the case. He is a very kind and compassionate person, he knows your order and has an amazing memory of where you have been or what you have been doing. I broke my collarbone a few years back and he remembers to this day! Now about the food, the Pho tai may be the cure to any issues I have in my life. Whether that be satiating my hunger or simply cheering up my day pho sam always delivers! To give perspective of just how much I love this place, I have been for not one not two but three times in one day!
