Some of the best Vietnamese food I've eaten in a while and I've tried several places in Chicago / California. Very impressed with the food quality. I ordered a soft spring roll with shrimp and pork. So delicious - the rice paper and noodles had a wonderful soft, chewy texture in addition to a nice accent with Thai basil inside the roll. Shrimp and pork tasted fresh, the peanut sauce was also very good. The soup I ordered was the beef stew with tendon, beef chunks, and carrot and it was so yum. I was planning to only eat half but ended up eating the whole thing. The broth was so unctuous, comforting, and flavorful with savory beefiness and sweet herbal notes. The beef chunks/tendon were very tender, even the carrots were delicious. I asked for Thai basil / lime / extra sprouts on the side and would definitely recommend adding all of that to the soup! We used to drive an hour to the west side for Saigon. We arrived to find only 2 tables occupied on a Sunday afternoon. Waitress pointed to the tables to seat ourselves. We initially ordered water and bubble tea. Got the water that tasted funny. Never received Bubble Tea. Ordered the grilled steak platter. Received rice paper wraps that were too big and broken to soak. Table was dirty and sticky. Pho was tasteless. Vietnamese Pancake cake after the main meal and was very very greasy and burnt. The waitresses were busy on their phones and one actually took down her hair and put it back up hovering over the condiment area. . We left our meal half eaten. An older Asian women showed up and pointed to the half eaten food. And asked me how it was. I said " it could have been better". As the last weeks of winter continue to insist on being cold and grey, I was thrilled when a colleague suggested that we grab pho for a lunch meeting. And not having had any pho since moving to Indy last summer, I was dying to get my hands on some of that soul-warming broth. Like all good pho joints across the country it seems, Saigon is located near a strip mall in the middle of nowhere along 38th Street on the west side of town. Plenty of parking, so no reason to stress there! The menu is huge, so if you're not feeling pho, you'll have plenty of noodly options to satisfy any craving. But since it was my first time in, I opted for my standard Vietnamese restaurant go-tos: spring rolls and a bowl of beef pho. Both came out in less than 5 minutes, so you can be in and out easily for a lunchtime meeting. The spring rolls were ace: not too large, not too small, but just right. Now, to the main reason you're reading this! Having not had pho in several months, I was beyond ecstatic that the broth was flavorful alone, but even better with a kick of sriracha. I had to refrain from simply drinking the entire bowl of broth in order to enjoy the delicious noodles, beef, and accoutrements. On my lunch time visit, I got great food, quick service, and affordable price! I grabbed a parking spot in the lot in front of the entrance and was greeted and seated pretty quickly as they were opening the restaurant. I had looked over a number of Yelp reviews, so I had a good idea what I wanted to try. The waitress provided a lunch menu as well as the full menu, so I opted for the items that were recommended/caught my eye ahead of ordering. To start, I ordered the Chicken & Crab rolls and the Crabmeat Asparagus soup (cup). The two items arrived at the same time, so I decided to let me soup cool just a bit while I dug into the crispy rolls of goodness. The finger sized rolls had a drizzle of a creamy sauce as well as a sweet & sour dipping sauce on the side. These were fantastic! The flavor was similar to that of crabmeat rangoon, but the crisp narrow roll reminded me of those expensive cookies that look like chocolate filled straws. Perfectly cooked, crispy outside with a tasty moist inside. Definitely order a set for yourself! The soup was pretty good too. It had two kinds of meats as well as bits of asparagus. It looked like the consistency and appearance of an egg drop soup, but with bits of meat that looked like imitation crab strips and of real shrimp. (The menu doesn't list details, I'm strictly guessing here.) Before I finished my soup, my colorful Vietnamese Sandwich arrived. Served on fresh French bread, my Banh Mi came with Vietnamese ham, long sliced cucumber, shredded carrots, what tasted like pickled daikon, pepper slices, and topped with fresh cilantro. It also came with a knife to cut the 8" sandwich down if it was too much to handle. The flavors were very fresh and delicious. It was a bit difficult managing all the ingredients so that they stayed between the bread halves, but not too bad. Well worth ordering! First off, we were seated immediately. We all ordered waters and then asked for some more time to order an app and figure out what we wanted to do, but the service took quite some time before someone came back to check on us. It wasn't busy, so I'm not sure what was up. We ended up ordering the vegetarian tofu spring rolls to share. Phenomenal. The flavor was great, and the dipping sauce was even better. You get two rolls per order. Unfortunately, they didn't have a vegetarian pho available (the veggie tofu is made with beef broth as a heads up), so I opted for broccoli tofu. Sadly, the dish lacked overall flavor and really didn't stand out at all to me. It needed more seasoning, and the sauce didn't have enough of a "punch" to make it worthy of writing home. On the plus side: they do have a whole menu for vegetarians (flip to the back), which is great. While visiting friends in the area, I was able to try this Vietnamese restaurant. The menu was very expansive, with about 164 items. A lot of the things on this menu often aren't found all in one restaurant, so that was a perk. I am visiting with a friend who is used to eating home cooked Vietnamese food, and he was impressed with the length and variety of the menu. Tried the Canh Chua today, which is a dish I have come to like a lot over time. The tamarind flavor is unique and yummy. Also the spring rolls were good, and so was the avocado shake. I haven't found the "one" at Saigon yet, the one dish that I am required to order when visiting, that makes me want to drive out of my way to visit and elevate the place to 5-stars. Saigon's menu is so expansive, who knows if I'll ever find a singular dish to obsess over? However, I still have very much enjoyed what I've tried so far, including the misnomer'd "small" pho with beef & flank, lemongrass tofu, and grilled tofu appetizer. Fellow dining partners have ordered the lemongrass chicken and tofu bun noodle dish, and were satisfied. My lemongrass tofu was part of the amazingly great $6 lunch deal, where I also chose the fresh-tasting soft spring roll w. shrimp and the mushroom soup. Saigon's fragrant pho broth had a great taste; not the best pho I've ever tasted, but the ideal cold/flu fighter and plenty good with ample added doses of hoisin & Sriracha sauces. I've ordered the Vietnamese iced coffee on multiple occasions, and highly recommend it to coffee fiends; you can control how much condensed milk you stir into the super-strong coffee, if you don't want the final product to be super sweet. The iced coffee is a fantastic way to finish any meal at Saigon. Service is friendly, but sometimes spotty in execution. I'll continue to work my way through Saigon's specialties until I find that one-and-only dish that inspires cravings/food daydreaming. read more

Super disappointing experience. It was my first time back after the change in ownership-- I used to go every Sunday. Peter and his staff were the pinnacle of warmth and hospitality. The experience I had today was cold, distant and inattentive. There was two other patrons in the entire restaurant and yet no one would talk to us or even make eye contact. We had to flag the server down for anything we needed. The food-- was just okay. Not the worst, but certainly not how it was (despite recycling the old menu that just lazily said "Prices + $1" on the front.) Won't be coming back. RIP old Saigon, you are missed! ;( read more

I love this place. Every time I come here, I order Lemongrass Tofu or Basil Tofu (on the back of the menu). They're great vegetarian options (super flavorful), and they come with lots of onions, which I love. This time, though, I ordered something different. I went Saigon on Thursday night, and they had fair business for a weeknight. In fact, it got busier as the night went on. As I was looking through the menu, I noticed the Grilled Tofu Platter. I didn't ask what it was--I only verified it was vegetarian and ordered it. I guess this and the other grilled platter items have been on the menu forever, but I've never noticed them. What a mistake! The grilled platter, as it turns out, is a build your own spring roll kit. I loved it! It came with lettuce, basil, pickled veggies (daikon, carrot, and cucumber), rice vermicelli, protein, and, of course, the rice wrappers with water for soaking. The platter also came with two dipping sauces. I won't lie: I like playing with my food; so, this was perfect. As for the service, I've never had slow or non-existent service at Saigon. The staff is always, friendly, helpful, and fast. The restaurant is always clean. I have no complaints. read more

Honestly, Saigon is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. We have enjoyed eating at their establishment for many years, since way back when they were in a weird strip mall off 29th St, and before anyone in Indianapolis had ever heard of Pho or Bahn Mi. They should be an Indy standard if you are visiting the city and want great food. Even though we are typically a carry-out household, when we go to Saigon we always eat in the restaurant. Their location in the former Bob Evans is open and airy, and appealing with a modern feel. When you walk in you can see the restaurant staff working and Peter is always there to greet you with a smile. We always wait to be seated, and he remembered our names long before we remembered his. In fact, we have moved quite a bit farther away, and can't visit as often, but he always remembers our names, and pretty much knows what we are going to order, too. We have had several dishes over the years, but since we can't attend as often, we usually stick to our favorites these days. My must haves are the Vietnamese Salad and the Duck, Mushroom, and Herbs soup (I get rice noodles instead of egg noodles). The duck soup is rich and savory. The salad is crunchy and bright. My husband prefers to order the Pho with beef, which has a layered slightly sour and herbal broth. To drink I often enjoy either the Jasmine Bubble Tea (a milky floral shake) or the Iced Vietnamese Coffee, which brews at your table. read more

I have to say, this is an amazingly good restaurant. The ambiance is kind of ho hum, but for a homestyle restaurant, it fits. I've never been to Vietnam so I can't comment as to how authentic it is, but it's freshly made and the ingredients are good. The fried noodles are great! Definitely worth checking out. read more

The pho is excellent, and #100; grilled tofu with noodles, vegetables and peanuts is one of my favorites. The spring rolls are always fresh and tasty. I've tried a few items out of my usual rut as well, and really enjoyed the sweet and sour fish soup. Service is good, but don't expect to get checked on a lot here. Food comes out fast, and then servers usually will leave you alone unless you ask for anything, but it is always very easy to get someone's attention if you need something, and everyone is always very nice! Prices are so low, I'm not sure how they manage this, particularly the lunch specials and $8 massive bowls of pho! This is my favorite Indy spot for Vietnamese food! read more

There is tons of parking, but keep in mind that people whip around the corner so be careful where you park and when walking. When walking inside the interior is a little outdated. When we entered there was only 1 waitress and 2-3 people in the kitchen working. When we got there it wasn't too busy. My partner ordered the pho dac biet, Vietnamese coffee and I ordered the broken rice platter, bowl of soup and coconut bubble tea. Originally I ordered the honeydew bubble and they were out, then i changed it to fresh coconut juice and they were out then finally changed it to coconut bubble. When the food was brought out my partner's coffee was not brought out, we were more then 1/2 way through the meal and water water never refilled and we had to ask for the refill and the coffee. It was finally brought out close to the end of the meal. The rice platter was ok, the meat was decent, a little salty so you decently need to eat that was the rice. The other items in the plate were a bit bland and the soup was ok as well. My partner's pho was bland and he ordered extra noodles, and they didn't even add extra soup. There was barely any soup left in the bowl. It did start to get busy about 30 min later with 1 waitress in the front of the house and no one from the back was helping. Overall it was ok. I ordered to go because I had not eaten all day and was headed to a MEGA food fest at REV in 4 hours. Actually I intended to grab some wonton soup but the fried rice looked tempting from the menu, I was hungry, so I went for it. It didn't look cooked, let alone FRIED! I didn't eat it until the next day when I added soy sauce to it and cooked in more in the toaster oven which made it Perfect! During the road trip to Chicago from Florida, we had to stop in Indianapolis to grab some breakfast. So that, we headed to this restaurant as we love Vietnamese cuisine so much, and it also has a pretty high rating. The restaurant was not too busy at on a Sunday morning. The food came out just after ten minutes waiting. We got ourselves a Pho Beef and a Sliced Pork and Shrimp Noodle Soup. The most significant element, the soul of every soup, was broth. The soup of both of our dishes was very authentic, tasty, and full of aroma. The beef sliced was fresh and luscious. The bowl also has a generous amount of chopped green onion and sliced onion, which made the soup even much better. However, the noodle was not freshly made, same as most Pho restaurant in the whole U.S. Besides, the cost of food was fair, and the service was pleasant and friendly. This is probably one of my favorite Vietnamese restaurants to get my Asian fix. Everything on their menu is delicious and authentic. Their service here is pretty fast and the waiter is always friendly. It is definitely a family type of atmosphere. I called in advance for a table for 10. I certainly had pork and some kind of noodle but the taste and ingredients were totally different so to this date, I have no clue what that meal was. The banh mi I ordered was dead to me. The bread wasn't simultaneously crunchy and fluffy like a good banh mi, and the fillings inside were not fresh, but mediocre. No staff really paid attention to us unless we waved our hands in the air countless times. Go here quite often when there's a craving for a hot bowl of Vietnamese noodle soup. The service is fast, friendly, and food is pretty consistent. For some reason, the soups like pho or bun bo hue seem to taste better on the weekends. Weekdays, the broth seems more watered down or not as flavorful. But still hits the spot as needed. For apps, we always order the crispy egg rolls - hot and delicious. Today had the fresh spring rolls and they were ok. A little flimsy on the filings and the dipping sauce was too peanut buttery. I've ordered other food off the menu such as canh chua, ca kho, meat platters where you'd wrap your own spring rolls. Everything I've ordered, food was decent and portions are pretty big. There's quite a few Vietnamese restaurants in the area. When it comes to Pho, rice/noodle dishes and Vietnamese spring rolls, I personally think they kinda taste closely identical and equally good. But what makes us keep coming back to Saigon and why I consider this place the best Vietnamese restaurant in Indy, is for their Beef Stew Rice Noodle soup. The other places either dont offer this, or not as good as Saigon's version. Chunks of tender beef and tendon and the broth is like mixed Pho soup and beef stew soup. You can just eat it as is and no need to jazz ito up with more veggies, siracha, and hoisin which you typically do with Pho. Been coming here for 6 yrs and the quality has not changed and I almost always order it, it is that good. read more

I want so badly to like Saigon more than I do. I keep going back to give it a try every year and am always left underwhelmed. Their menu is large and offers a great array of Vietnamese options you can't find many other places in Indy. Unfortunately it's all so bland! I know ~Americanizing~ food is a thing but just because I'm white doesn't mean I can't eat food with flavor to it. If you are worried about making things too spicy for folks include a scale or some option for people to opt in to flavor. We recently went there and ordered avocado shakes, a sampler platter to split, crispy egg noodles with chicken, pork and shrimp, and a vermicelli noodle bowl with beef, egg roll, and shrimp. The crispy noodle dish was essentially bland moo goo gai pan on noodles. The noodle bowl was standard with a good amount of veggies and meat, and the appetizer sampler platter well rounded. As an example I had a dish with shrimp in it...all shrimp were overcooked and I had to pull the tails off of the shrimp In a prepared dish. The best pho I've ever had. We went for a Yelp Elite event this evening and just had the most amazing time. Great conversation. Amazing food. Educational tutorial from Tina and tour of the kitchen was awesome. I ordered a Thai Bubble Tea and it was super tasty. I think I've found a new favorite. My husband and I ordered their crab and chicken rolls as an appetizer and fell in love. As part of the event, this family owned restaurant was gracious enough to give everyone a bowl of their pho. We ordered the beef and it was melt in your mouth wonderful. All pho are served with sprouts, Basil leaves, like, and jalapeño.
