Overall the food and service was decent. Chili oil could have some spice - it didn't have any zing whatsoever. The place I typically go to sets my mouth on fire with the smallest amt so that was a tad disappointing, but they do offer other spicy condiments. Spring roll was a bit dry in rice paper and a little airy. Pho was hot and good and didn't mess with my stomach too much. I also like that they offer parsley as a topping unlike the places I've gone to before. Bowl makes it hard to pour into the to go container so I made a slight mess. Service was quick and place was clean. Finally got a chance to try it out, and wasn't disappointed, just expect a tad more flavor with the price range. read more

This Vietnamese restaurant was probably the first pho restaurant in Indiana. It's a bit of a local hole in the wall, family owned. I love their pho. I went for lunch today. The menu is a blend of Pho, Chinese and a bit of Thai. There are noodle and rice dishes with any meat or veggie options. A few specialty plates were also available. The servers are very friendly and know the regulars by name. The restaurant is almost upscale inside with subdued lighting and music. Alan, our server, checked on us multiple times. Our food came out quickly. I ordered the Veggie Pho with Tofu. The generous bowl of broth was delicate and hot! The tofu was baked and light. The vegetables were super fresh. I topped off the bowl with bean sprouts and cilantro. There was so much pho that I took half home. (Alan packed my soup up nicely to go.). My husband had the Banh Mi Vietnamese Sandwich off the appetizer menu. The beef was tender with fresh bread and vegetable. He loved it. There's parking beside the building. Wonderful lunch at this unassuming restaurant! Ordered vegetarian spring rolls, Vietnamese grilled chicken and chicken pho. Wonderful, fresh and great quality. Spring rolls had fresh vegetables that had a lot of crunch to them, grilled chicken was excellent but the pho was the star (surprise). Fresh tray of cilantro, Thai basil, lime and bean sprouts was provided. You can see in the photo how vibrant the vegetables were. It had been so long since my last visit to What The Pho so it was great to hear they are both under new ownership and very vegan friendly. Vietnamese cuisine is one of my favorites but unfortunately, I have a shellfish/seafood allergy. The combination is not the best. On a cold winter night earlier this week, I met up with friends for a steamy bowl of vegan tofu veggie pho at What the Pho and it hit the spot. Their staff was very confident in the vegan vs. not vegan options and it is so appreciated (and comforting). I also had their fresh spring rolls. Note that the peanut sauce has fish sauce in it so I just used hoisin sauce as my dip. The atmosphere is clean and pretty simple. The only reason I wouldn't give it a five is the service was quite slow despite us being one of three tables in the restaurant. Wow is all I have to say! I tried what the pho for the first time based off a recommendation I overheard in a nail salon. The ambiance was nice and clean with a soft melodic playlist. The service was excellent 10/10. The server/cashier took amazing care of me and was very attentive. I got the #9 which was the spicy pho! I get light and satisfied when I left the establishment. The Thai iced tea was properly made, strong and not watery or too sweet. They have a variety of vegetarian noodle soups - bún riêu, phố, bún măng. They have veggie meats or tofu as an option. The pho veggie broth was missing the traditional spices in pho and had an odd sour note. Employees were friendly. It's spacious inside with at least fifteen tables and would be great for large groups. Ample parking and easy to locate as it's a stand-alone building. read more

I'd been waiting to try this spot for some time; finally made it in today to grab a carry out order. The gentleman at the counter warmly welcomed me and help me decide between the veggie beef or tofu pho. I I paid and sat down at a table to wait. There were a couple of tables dining in, but what was most remarkable was how clean the restaurant is. It's evident that this is a priority. Another gentleman brought me my order in just a few minutes and thanked me again. When I arrived at my destination, I tried the spring rolls first. They were delicious, with fresh vegetables and rice noodles. The peanut sauce was delightful as well. Later, I reheated the broth and enjoyed my pho. The amount of food I received was enough to make two meals! For just over $20, it's an excellent value. The vegetables and noodles again were all very fresh, and the broth was amazingly flavorful for a veggie base. I have been eating pho from a young age and think What The Pho has one of the best Pho in the city. I can't even believe I've never reviewed this place and think it is because I just get takeout and by the time I get it home I'm just worried about eating it and forget to take pictures. The pho broth is perfect any day but a go to when I'm feeling under the weather. Some of the other items I always get are the egg rolls, springs rolls, and the banh mi. This place definitely looks like a hole in the wall off of Michigan, but it's definitely worth a stop! My fiancé is obsessed with pho and actually goes here quite a bit. He says it's the best he's found since we've moved to Indianapolis. I've only been a time or two but it's hit the spot. I'm not sure if it's the owner, there is a man who is normally working there when we go in who is so pleasant. I had a wonderful experience at this restaurant today. I went there for lunch with a coworker and the waiter was very helpful seeing that this was our first time there. We both had the lunch special. Susan had the tofu Pho with egg noodles (she can't eat rice noodles) and I had the rare beef Pho. We both enjoyed our meals. All the dressings were fresh... especially the cilantro! YUM! I added hot sauce to my broth and it was amazing. The beef cooked up nicely in my broth and all the fresh ingredients worked perfectly in my bowl. We both walked out feeling full and not bloated. Let me say that I was so grateful to try What the Pho (LOVE the play on words with the restaurant name). While it was 100 degrees outside, I had caught a summer cold. You know, the one where you have the sniffles and the sore throat. So, I was searching for comfort food. And one of my comfort foods is Vietnamese pho. Walking in, I was greeted and seated in a booth. I noticed a few families, but not really busy for a Friday. In fact, this was a popular carry out location--lots of to-go orders. The place is spacious and clean, an open dining room with windows all around. I would say roughly 80-100 people could comfortably dine there in booths and tables. So what did I order? First, a Vietnamese pancake as my appetizer. Filling. Crunchy outside stuffed with shrimp, pork, beansprouts, white onion, and green onion. Sweet dipping sauce with a side of veggies (cilantro, lettuce, cucumber, and shredded carrot and daikon). Super scrumptious. Then, I tried the beef and meatball pho (#4). The chef brought out a large, steaming bowl. I nodded and thanked him, my eyes wide with delight. I slowly dipped the spoon into the broth, blew on it, and took a slurping sip. The broth. Perfect, flavorful, and layered. I had to just savor it before tossing in all the extra goodies (bean sprouts, jalapeños, Thai basil, cilantro). I could feel my sinuses open up and my belly filling with deliciousness. How divine as a simple bowl of pho. In the background, love ballads softly played, making me smile (think Michael Buble meets Elton John). It reminded me of the Vietnamese restaurant in El Paso I long ago worked as a server. Regardless if you are from Indianapolis or not, I recommend What the Pho. Their food, their service, their prices, and their overall feeling of a family-owned restaurant makes it worth every slurping spoonful. It's probably been more than 4 years since I've come here and was in the area and remembered that the food was good. I was a little disappointed that the goi rolls were just average and my banh mi tastes like they also threw in a slice of spam. I kept looking at it trying to figure out what that was among the other meat.. My pho was average. Was a little disappointed that it wasn't very authentic like it was in the past. No tendons and tripe. I asked the server and he said they remodeled and maybe new owner so it appears more Americanized now. I ordered a lime-ade and it was tart.. I did say something to a guy that checked up on me and he said my server is fairly new so he made me another one and it tasted MUCH better. I had the soft spring rolls and beef bowl with vermicelli and it was just average. I opted out of getting extra food Togo due to that. The place is updated and looks nicer. The service here is always impeccable and the price for what you get is a great deal. I inevitably always order the rare beef Pho and save leftovers for the next day. I called in a takeout order of Well done Beef Pho (№3), Chicken Fried Rice, Potstickers, and veggie egg rolls. Upon arrival, the ambience was warm, clean environment, with delightful smells coming from the kitchen and I walked pass someone's pho bowl and I could smell sriracha they added. The food was well packaged, and nothing leaked out on the drive home. My food was still warm as soon as I put it together to prep dinner. The Well done Beef Pho was delicious, I enjoyed the clear beef broth. It was tasty but the beef was cut a little too thin for me. The beef could easily break up with a fork, it was very thin. The chicken in the fried rice was really dry, that the only thing out of this whole order that wasn't that good to me. Potstickers were gone within an instant of arrival home. Veggie Egg rolls didn't need the sauce that went with it and they were fine alone. I'd have to try out What the Pho again and maybe try the beef meatballs for the next visit. read more

My girlfriend loves Pho and we have been to almost every place in Indy so one day we were on Michigan street we saw this place and being honest we decided to go because of this place's name; it's hilarious! It's a small place located on 7280 michigan road not very well illuminated on the outside but easy to locate. I would say it's taste is average but good enough for a review. I had the spring roll which they serve in rice paper and are filled with shrimp, pork, fresh veggies and rice noodles with their plum sauce. This is what I enjoyed the most during our visit. My wife and I had the Tofu Banh Mi, Spring Rolls, and Veggie Pho. Everything was delicious. The Banh Mi was beautifully flavored and is one of the best Banh Mi's I have ever eaten. The spring rolls were a perfect starter to the epic Veggie Pho. It's a giant bowl that's packed with flavor. More than enough for one person and I think they know that because they delivered it with an additional small bowl to share. Currently visiting Indiana and was craving some pho during this random week of rain!! To be honest, I did not have high expectations with the asian cuisine here so I was happy to just find a pho-designated spot rather than a pan-asian fusion eatery. The pho here comes in a single size, the steak isn't super evenly cut but it is thin. They bring the bowls out on a plate to make it easier to move around on your table, which I appreciate! They also accommodated my request for extra white onions. The broth is on the sweeter side, which was great with a generous lime squeeze. I kind of wish there was a bottle of fish sauce on the side so I could add a splash in the broth to up the funk but overall I was super pleased with the meal, especially given my expectations coming in. I'd be curious to try out their other options, such as the rice plates, in addition to their handmade lemon soda. The service here is also super friendly.
