I'll preface this by saying I've only done takeout from this location, so I can't really speak to the dine-in service, but I'm just excited that Tian Fu opened an east side spot. It's so much more convenient than driving all the way to the northwest side of Indy. I've been on the hunt for solid American-Chinese food and anything close to more traditional Cantonese-style dishes. Still searching overall, but Tian Fu definitely has some pretty solid options. I specifically go out of my way for their Beef Stir-Fried Rice Noodles (Beef Chow Fun), which I haven't been able to find anywhere else in the city. The noodles have great texture and flavor, and it totally scratches that craving. I also really liked their fried marinated chicken wings, perfect mix of crispy skin and flavorful. I've heard they have a separate Chinese menu you can request, which makes me even more curious to dine in sometime and explore more of their offerings. Overall, I'd recommend them for the variety alone, easily one of the better Chinese food spots in the city, especially if you're on the east side and want something reliable for takeout. read more

We arrived for a get together with friends. While we were seated immediately (due to a table being part of the group was available), it seemed to take a while to get our food. I ordered edamame, miso soup, a Philadelphia roll, and a spider roll. The edamame was nice and hot but overly salty. I eventually got my miso soup after my wife had finished both her salad and her miso soup. The soup was nice and hot as well as flavorful. Then Philadelphia roll only came with six pieces when I thought it would be eight. The pieces were also very small. However, it tasted fine. The spider roll was a new one for me. I thought it would have soft shell crab covering the top of it, but there wasn't any. The roll itself was filled with lettuce, cucumber, and avocado, with a deep-fried crab stick inside, topped with masago (fish roe). I thought the lettuce was an odd ingredient for sushi, but thought I'd give it a try anyway. Never again. I went ahead and finished the roll, but I won't get it again. The lettuce made me gag a couple of times. I think it was a combination of the texture and taste of it combined with the rest of the roll. My wife enjoyed her hot jasmine tea and her teriyaki salmon bento box despite not being very impressed with the salmon. I want to add that the server gave a friend sitting at our table a Philadelphia roll that he didn't order, but he was too confused to say anything and ate it anyway. The rest of his food was fine. The server kept trying to serve orange chicken to me even though I didn't order it and I told him as such. I finally had to insist I didn't order it and he finally stopped trying to give it to me. Everyone else who was there had a seemingly positive experience. Ours was not so good. I went to the bathroom after I finished eating and that bathroom was so cold, you could store meat in it without the meat going bad. The General Tso's chicken was off the charts. You get a huge helping of chicken with vegetables and peppers. And rice. The chicken is fried just right and the sauce is amazingly good. This is the second Tian Fu restaurant in the Indianapolis area, and I'm glad that the owner has retained the name and menu of the original Tian Fu on West 86th street. Right off the Washington St exit on 465 South freeway, Tian Fu has decent parking space. The restaurant interiors are just like another traditional chinese restaurant but much bigger space. My favorite go-to dishes are spicy crispy chicken (chinese version of fried buffalo chicken), Hunan chicken and their house sushi rolls. Hunan chicken has lots of veggies along with the protein option you choose. I've tried their egg rolls and crab Rangoon in the past, and I've had much better appetizers at other places. They have a robot that brings food to your table but the food is actually served by a server. More than efficiency, I think the robot is more of a gadget for attracting guests, which is completely fine. I was fascinated too! I am really delighted to write this review because my bestie and I came here opening week and it was really a poor experience, I live down road and was thrilled to have a great Asian place so near. Service was almost non existent, food was mediocre at best. We both agreed could just be opening week hiccups but we're not inspired to return until over a year later when I had a mad craving for hot and sour soup and they had great reviews on this soup. So I came back to give it a try and I'm so glad I did. BEST hot and sour soup I have ever had. I love it so much I get a cup a few times a week. The wait staff is wonderful! They have traditional Chinese music playing throughout the dining area. The staff is friendly and attentive. The restaurant serves Chinese, Japanese and Thai food which includes lettuce wraps, egg rolls, pot stickers, tofu, chicken wings, tempura, Lo Mein, fried rice, soups, salads, chicken, duck, shrimp, curry, and sushi. I broadened my horizons and ordered a Philadelphia roll along with the pepper steak and fried rice. I got a pineapple sake to wash it down. It took about 10 minutes for me to get me food. The restaurant has a little gimmick where a robot brings out your food to you and talks to you. It will even sing happy birthday for you. It is not an autonomous robot. It is escorted by an actual server, who takes the food off of the robot and puts it on your table. The robot does look like it could serve food all by itself if they wanted it to though. It was pretty cool to see. I am not ashamed to admit that, it was the robot that drew me here. My food was not the best that I have had, but it was still pretty good. We went for Lunar New Year - our 2nd time. They have a chef special menu for more authentic Chinese cuisine. Their menu is huge. our favorite: the boiled fish (filet) in hot chili oil, special fried noodle (fried with eggs), fried green bean with minced pork, country style beef and the xiao long bao. Updating this review because although my first experience with this restaurant was good, the visits that followed were not as much with other dishes that were ordered. The staff is always nice. It is the food that I am not a fan of. The sauce always has a goopy consistency. Whether I order a Thai, Japanese, or Chinese dish the sauce is too thick and fake looking for me to want to finish it. In terms of the area this is the best place for picking up or eating in, I know there are other more fabled options around but you don't need to wait 3 hours for food here. We happened upon this place when looking for a place to eat for dinner. It is located in the old Bob Evans near 465 and Franklin Rd on E. Washington St. All the old seating is still in place inside. We were sat right away, with only a few other tables occupied. Our server was very friendly and attentive. He was able to explain things on the menu and came to check on us several times. The menu is pretty extensive, with lots of options. The portions are large and everything tastes great. The best part is the BellaBot that brings your food out to you. It is a talking robot kitty! The only dissapointment was the fortune cookies. While they tasted great, the "fortunes" inside were more like proverbs, not fortunes. They have seated tables and also a sushi bar at the front. There was a lot of hype around this spot and I was so looking forward to going and trying their soup dumplings. However, when we got there and ordered, we discovered they don't always have them even though they're on the menu and they were not available the day I went. I asked if there are certain days of the week when they have them and was told "whenever the owner has time to make them." So that wasn't very helpful. I got the pan fried pork pot stickers instead and those were yummy! But my main entree of basil fried rice was just ok. It didn't have much flavor and was not spicy at all, even though the menu indicated it was a spicy item. My review is based on a take out order experience. Tian fun's new location just opened. And I tried their wonton soup and spicy crispy chicken to go. They said it would be 20 minute or less, and it was ready a little a less than that. They have extensive menu, it was my first time at Tian Fu but I was pleasantly surprised they offer Thai menu, too! I loved the interior. Looks like Thai building used to be Bob Evans but they did a good job transforming it to an Asian dining. Food was great, got generous portion. Wonton soup was average - but again, great value considering the price. I also loved that they put my order in a reusable bag. My husband and I ate at this restaurant earlier in the year, and it was decent. Sit-down Chinese restaurants are becoming more and more rare, so I suggested this place today when a friend and I were trying to decide where to have lunch. This restaurant seems to have changed since I was there before - for one thing, it was lunch hour and the restaurant was pretty much deserted. The robot that used to deliver meals and drinks was no longer there. The service was incredibly slow - I have gotten far better service in restaurants that were completely packed. Our waitress kept disappearing for long, long periods of time, and she was seemingly nowhere - certainly not waiting on customers, because there weren't any apart from us and one or two other tables on the other side of the restaurant. We got our drinks and it took forever for her to finally come and take our lunch order. My friend ordered fried rice and I ordered sushi - the lunch special, two sushi rolls and I requested that they be cut extra-small. We got our soups and the salad I had ordered, and then our waitress brought my friend's fried rice. I waited and waited and waited for my sushi, but she never brought it. My friend finished his meal and finally our waitress reappeared from wherever she had been disappearing to, and brought my sushi - indifferently prepared, and not cut into small pieces as I had requested. The meal was over and we were ready to leave so I asked her to just box it up so that I could take it home. She did so, and we paid our checks - after I reminded her that I am a veteran and that she had said I would get a discount. So we waited again while she adjusted my check. Finally we got out of there, swearing never to return. Incidentally, I had to make an emergency stop on the way home because my friend suddenly had a bad stomach issue. OK, this is the Best Mongolian Beef since the Oriental Inn closed! This is almost a one of a kind dish, and I've only had it made like this at one other restaurant. Absolutely the finest ingredients, incredible flavor! It's so good you'll go home and Slap your Momma because she never made anything so good for you! Need to go back and give another try to be fair.So if you don't know what you want or want to try something new, pull up the menu ahead of time and search anything you might want more information about. I did not have a server. I glanced at the menu before ordering to go but had some questions before I made a decision. The only person I interacted with was the gentleman at the front counter. Seemed like a nice man very not very helpful at all. I tried to ask some questions about a few different options, and he kept saying, "Please have a seat and read the descriptions on the menu." Well, I had already done that and still had more specific questions. He basically told me to Google it... So I got black pepper salmon and 2 chicken egg rolls. Paid over $17, and when I looked in the bag, I was like, "This is it? I mean, the salmon was not on the appitizer section but should have been. Nothing came with it, not even rice! I asked if the salmon was raw or smoked.. he didn't know, and he did not try to find out. So I seared them in a skillet for about 5 seconds on each side just because my preference is not for raw or smoked. I wanted it seared, but clearly, that's not the way it is supposed to come. So they did nothing wrong, I just would not have gotten it had I known.. and there was not much of a description o. The menu and, again, the gentleman was no help. Who knows if I had taken a seat, the server might have been more helpful. As for the chicken egg rolls, they were fine but small or regular size, I guess Foon Yings has me spoiled. If you know about Foon Yings. Then you know. I will stick with them for straight Chinese food. Tian Yu has lots of Asian choices not just Chinese. I really wanted the curry or sushi, so I guess I will give that a try next time. The restaurant looked nice and clean, with a beautiful decore and ambiance and a nice Selection of wines. Really great food. So many choices of cuisine. Chinese, Thai, and sushi entrees. Tian fu chicken: chicken cooked well, vegetables were crisp yet tender. It was perhaps a little saltier than I would have preferred but I don't use a lot of salt, so I'm sure that's why. Twice cooked pork was perfection as well. Ambiance is nice considering it's an old Bob Evan's location. I also was encouraged to pet the robot who becomes a cat when receiving human affection. Her name is Bella. She appears to be hard of hearing as she speaks really loudly and therefore drew much more attention to me, a diehard introvert, when I was obediently petting her plastic ears. I feel like I missed something here. The reviews are so great, but I unfortunately didn't feel the same way about the food. It was just okay. I started with the vegetable spring roll and it was very greasy. No one else in my group cared for it either. Then I ordered the Philadelphia sushi roll and a shrimp tempura roll. We also got one order of soup dumplings for the table. The salmon didn't taste super fresh in the Philadelphia roll, but otherwise it was pretty good. The shrimp tempura roll was also just okay. We have eaten here twice inside, and now just recent for a to-go order. This place is still super new, and everything we have had has been okay. If you eat in, they have a cute robot that delivers the food which is fun for the kids. Our first visit I got the chicken pad thai, and it was really good, but not spicy at all. I was sort of confused on if they have spice levels since I wasn't asked by the server. Most recent I tried their sushi - the Dynamite roll. It was good but I think the outside wasn't fried enough? Made each piece veryyy chewy. My husband got the Mongolian chicken and it was good, but he had hoped for more spice too. The only things I haven't liked - the regular salad with the ginger dressing. I usually love ginger dressing, but this dressing was not what I am used to and I literally couldn't eat it. Also, I previously got the Teriyaki Salmon and although the salmon itself was amazing - it's served on a crap ton of grilled onions with like 2 pieces of broccoli. This is the second time I've had lackluster carryout. The first was sushi which, granted, is always a gamble at an inexpensive restaurant in a landlocked state. But some of it was so rank my cat wouldn't eat it. I dismissed it as a fluke. Last night, the aged tofu was soggy, the spring rolls were deep fried and greasy (that's an egg roll to me), and the green curry was 98% tofu (virtually no veg and very little bland sauce). The best item was the vegetable yakitori, steamed veg on a skewer in a tasty sauce. They have adorable, reusable carryout bags, but the handles were covered in sauce. It'll do in a pinch. Everything was hot, fast, and fresh. The inside was cute. But there are other similarly priced places in town that taste better and are more reliable. read more

Tian Fu, at its Northwest Side location occupies the space that formerly housed Daruma, my favorite Japanese restaurant ever. Now they've expanded, invading the Eastside, hoisting their flag at what was a Bob Evans. Thank God. Bob Evans is the pits. If one thing is for certain, you're no longer down on the farm. Tian Fu has transformed the space into a nice, mid-level Asian eatery. The menu is large and features a cornucopia of Chinese, Japanese, and Thai favorites. This includes a full sushi bar. If one ate there daily for a year, he wouldn't get bored. Portion sizes are hearty. For that reason, at this location at least, I've only tried the Kung Pao and orange chicken dishes. Both were excellent. Orange chicken is certainly on the sweet side. The Kung Pao chicken was excellent. Unfortunately, it was not as spicy as I'd have liked it, but I'd re-order it. I also tried an order of crab Rangoon. It was crab Rangoon. The service was very friendly. The service was so expedient, we got our entrees prior to getting our crab Rangoon appetizers. Decided to try Tian Fu at the last minute. Was pretty busy when we got there. Had some time to look over the large menu. All kinds of yummy choices - We had the sweetest waitress- very attentive and funny. Our dinners were absolutely delicious! Also tried Crab Rangoons and the Playboy roll. First of all - I want to say we went for lunch and the value was amazing.... Less than $10 for a three course lunch meal... yes, please! I ordered the lunch special with hot and sour soup, house spicy chicken, and side of fried rice. It also came with a crab Rangoon and spring roll. The hot and sour soup had good flavor, but I do think it needed some extra hot peppers and something for texture- some mushrooms, maybe. The crab Rangoon was standard. The spring rolls were excellent - a little smaller than I was used to, but it worked so nicely! I ordered the house spicy chicken. The menu compared it to buffalo chicken, so I was expecting it to be slathered in sauce, but it was really just a fried chicken, not bad but missed the mark for me- I wish I had stuck to general tsos instead. The fried rice was really good- not too salty, but still a good flavor. The little robotic cat server is also super cute! I wish I got a video of it. Overall, a nice addition to the east side. I was very pleasantly surprised by this former Bob Evans turned pan-Asian restaurant on the East side of Indy. Interestingly the menu has a mix of Chinese, Japanese and Thai food which means there's a lot to choose from! The prices were reasonable and consistent with what you would find at similar places- entrees in the $12-$16 range for the most part. The servers and front desk staff were all super friendly. They've done a really nice job with the decor and you would not know it was an old Bob Evans had you never been there before. It had a mix of wood carvings, murals/paintings, lanterns and funky Asian character back-lit signs. They also have these weird robots that accompany the servers to carry the food out. They announce their arrival and have random sayings. It's unique and kind of unnecessary, but fun! I definitely want to go back and try more. read more

My partner and I came in last week to try it out for the first time, and we are very excited to come back. The food was really great. We got the age tofu appetizer, which was nice and crispy outside and creamy inside. He got the volcano roll, and it was delicious sushi. I got the tian fu tofu, and the dish was very flavorful. The sauce on the veggies was sweet and the tofu was cooked well, not too hard but not too soft. Came with a side of white rice, which was very good. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The food did not take long to come out. And it was fun watching the robot work. The inside looks very nice and clean, and decorated very cool. While visiting our daughter who recently moved to that area we ordered from Tian Fu and it was amazing! The House Lo Mein was great with fresh shrimp as well as the all breast chicken General Tso's. We also ordered Crab Rangoons and Hot & Sour Soup. Loved the reusable bag our food came in and packaging was wonderful with super portions of each item we ordered.
