I've been here dozens and dozens of times in the last few years. The food is absolutely fantastic. I haven't eaten everywhere in Indy but of the two dozen or so Asian takeout restaurants, this one is a hard number two. There is one other place on the northeast side that passes them a little in taste and a little in portions. Otherwise, as far as near downtown - absolutely #1. However... two things really concern me that they should change. In the three+ years I have eaten there, the single-user bathroom has NEVER been open. The "out-of-order" sign has been there so long, the handwritten script has faded and you can't even read it. I am 99% sure it is against code to have a dining area without a restroom serving it. All the other restaurants must follow code. The "General" should too. How do they keep passing inspection with that? Second thing is... clean the seating area. Just a few weeks ago I sat under one of the ceilings fans that wasn't running. Holy @$#! was it nasty. I will BUY you guys a ladder if someone climbs up it at least twice a year and wipes those blades. Jeez. read more

After reading a few enthusiastic reviews, I was curious to see what was going on. While the criticisms were quite harsh, I found the experience to be more subtle. The service has a "simple" quality that some people might find surprising. However, since my assistant is of Chinese descent, I found it to be completely genuine and friendly. Efficiency seems to be their motto. I ordered the Lo Mein and it was prepared quickly. The staff suggested that I take my order to go, which I happily accepted. However, once I settled in, I noticed that the dish had a little more oil than I usually do. The taste was great, but was it the flavor that made the other diners excited? Wow. Saw this place on a whim and checked it out. Noticed all the raving reviews and that's what made me come in. The service was quick and food is made to order. Ordered the king pao, bourbon, and Szechuan chicken. Every meal was tasty and fresh. What got me was the leftovers didn't have that typical greasy take out smell in the car. It smelled like real food. Small hidden gem in a strip mall, will be back. read more

We ordered our traditional family Christmas dinner. The order was correct and the food was fresh and hot when we got it to the house. Chicken and broccoli, general Tso, moo goo and sweet and sour chicken. Something for the entire group. We also had crab Rangoon. Everything was good and the order was ready on time. I went here on a whim and probably wouldn't have known about this place it's so unassuming. Great spot, it's like fast casual Chinese as in I think they're just scooping from a larger portion into each order. This is your classic American Chinese food take out place. We decided to get chicken sticks. Overall pretty good sticks. It seemed like they were marinated in pineapple juice, soy, and five spice. They were cooked like expected, tender, and not overly sweet. Next We decided to try the General Tso's chicken since the place is named what it is. For me I wasn't a crispy chicken with a tangy sweet sauce. The sauce felt right but made the chicken soggy on the ride home. Broccoli was steamed very well. Finally Veg Lo Mein. This had the potential for greatness but fell short. It just needed some wok char on the noodles and a bit of a sauce that played salty and a little sweet. Best Chinese take out in the Twin Aire/Fountain Square area. They are always so friendly. I don't think that I have had to wait more than 15 minutes. If you get a meal you get a soda can. They do have the best Wonton Soup in the city that I have had so far . #comfortfood read more

It doesn't look like much on the outside, but don't sleep on this place. My fiance and I were both in the area for work and the hunger for Chinese hit, so we went looking for something nearby and we ended up at General Tso Inn. The shopping center it's in is quite dated yet still well maintained. The interior of the restaurant is likewise dated but clean and presentable. I actually find "outdated" local Chinese restaurants to be charming. The menu is very well priced, especially the lunch specials. I also won't complain about the portions! Their price for crab rangoon is just about the same as any other Chinese takeout place, but instead of the standard 6-8 pieces, General Tso Inn gives 10 pieces! The quality wasn't stellar but I'd say it was slightly better than most take out places and, for the price, it's worth a shot! If you find yourself in the Twin Aire area, give it a go! read more

We have been eating from here for almost 20 years. It is one of the better Chinese restaurants in the area. The General Tso is very flavorful without being too spicy. It is my wife's favorite from anywhere. The building is old and not kept up the best which tends to detract (and much of that is due to building owner, not the tenant), but the food is delicious! read more

Timeliness - 5. food took about 10 minutes to make. Service- 5. So very friendly and nice! Food- 3. Got hot and sour soup, good. Grab Rangoon tasted really salty vs the mixture of sweet salty. Ive been looking for this place since I moved downtown 4 years ago: my new staple takeout Chinese go to. Exactly what I what from Chinese food for real cheap. The meals include a drink that you can pick when you get your order. Crab Rangoon are delicious. There's nothing more to say other than that I'll be coming back here! No nonsense, down to business Chinese takeout. You actually get so much food. The meals include your entree, chicken or pork fried rice, an egg roll and drink. For like $6. Can you think of anywhere else you can get that much food for that little?? I got the sweet and sour chicken because I am 6 years old at heart and it was perfect. They leave out food all the time. They keep getting my order wrong, and when you present them with evidence of their mistake they won't own up and even admit that it was their fault. At this point it just feels like highway robbery. The food wasn't that good to begin with, and then for them to not even give my food with it. read more

This is a nice plaza takeout or dine in restaurant close to Fountain Square. Loved the Beef Lo Mein. Was not a fan of the Kung Pao Chicken or the Crab Rangoons. The Kung Pao had so many mushrooms that it overpowered the rest a bit. The prices were very reasonable and the portions were large. The restaurant had quick service for takeout, and offered 3 free drinks with our dinners. This was a nice surprise. Overall, the staff was very friendly and accommodating, and it was a pleasant experience. I may try the restaurant again, but we will choose different meals. read more

You call this place and they'll answer maybe 50% of the time. I get there and ask if their phones are down because I haven't been able to get in contact with them, my friend also has the same issue. Dude behind the counter just shrugs it off. I have gotten their bourbon chicken twice and it's just a little off. I'm no longer getting anything meat related from a Chinese restaurant again, not just this location either. Maybe Chicken fried rice but their chicken just tasted gross, the texture and taste was off. I brought up the phone issue again when before I left and he didn't seem to care. If you're looking for that generic Chinese style food, this is your place. The food is awesome for the price. We've tried the sweet and sour chicken, orange chicken, general tso chicken, and shrimp lo mein. All of them were awesome. The staff is really nice too. I so badly wanted to give this place a higher rating. It is a small family restaurant. I love to see the American spirit of making dreams come true. There were some real positives. The food was pretty good. The General Tso Chicken was very tasty and if we had eaten at the restaurant would've been more crispy. And the chicken stix were good as well. The vegetable lo mein was very good and with a few more spices would be excellent., With a few tweaks the food could reach a very delicious rating. They were giving free soft drinks as well so that was a positive. But the dining area was kind of dirty and the young man at the counter was wearing his mask under his chin. In this time of a horrific pandemic this, imo, is unacceptable. I know he was young but if he's not responsible enough don't give him that job. We will give this place another chance at some point because everyone deserves a second chance and we want to support small local business. Hopefully it will be better next time. read more

I really want to give this place a higher review, because it is so cheap, and so good when compared to the price, but the customer service is SO BAD. The woman (who may have had a bad day), cut me off, waved her hand at me, and generally acted like I was doing HER a disservice!! Example, I asked her how something on the menu was, her response? "I don't know, TRY IT" My face? -___- With that being said, this rating is for the food alone. Actually, there is a younger guy who works there who is awesome, so I'll give it 4 stars, but sometimes the service just leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Luckily, you can soon alleviate that bad taste with their delicious food. Cool thing #2, I ordered a lunch combo at like 5:30 (WAYYYYY after their lunch hours ended) and they still gave me the same price. Yea, the 4 star is warranted.
