Lemongrass soup, Kim Chee, Burmese Large Noodle Salad
Duncan R.

Never had Burmese food before today and it certainly won't be the last time!! I threw myself on the mercy of the House for a Chef's Surprise. Had the Burmese Large Noodle Salad that came with lemongrass soup and their version of Kim Chee. Out the door for $8.00!! Impossible to

Such a hidden gem!!! Food is excellent here and cheap. Portion is generous too. Owner doesn't have the best English but is very sweet and nice. Their pineapple shrimp fried rice was delicious! I also get hotpot there was is amazing as well, everything is fresh and the broth is tasty. I come often for this two things but want to try their noodles next time!

There's a tea service here. Interesting blend of herbs.

Very inexpensive with most dishes at $6 or such. The pho (meat soup) is great. Wonderful customer service. They were excited to show off their dishes! I would definitely return.

If you've never had Burmese food before (like me), it is heavily influenced by Chinese, Thai, and Indian cuisine. So expect some dishes from those regions or similar-tasting dishes. If you want classic Burmese dishes, order off of their handwritten menu tucked into the front page. Both dishes I tried (recommended to me by the hostess) were great: the Australian Lamb Stew and the Hong Kong Noodles. Neither were over-seasoned or over-sauced, which is a good indication that they are sticking close to their roots. The Lamb Stew had a bone broth base, which was evident from the gelatinous mouthfeel. My only issues with this dish was that it did seem a bit lacking because the only meat present in the soup was attached to bones and there were no noodles, and the broth was a bit on the gamey side for my taste. However, I was in love with the Hong Kong noodles. It used vermicelli rice noodles and was filled with egg and other delicious proteins in a light, fragrant soy (?) sauce (similar in taste to fried rice but in noodle form). Dining area and kitchen (which we could see into from the front of the store) appeared clean based on what we could see (we ordered takeout). This place is off the beaten path. The staff and 99% of the customers are Burmese, so it holds virtually no online presence. It was completely by happenstance that I stumbled across this place. But I highly recommend it for anyone looking to expand their culinary horizons!

It's a small business and you can feel cozy and comfy. We got Burmese tea, Rakhine Mont Tee , and AthokeSone along with freshly squeezed limeade. Everything is so tasty. Wish I can try the whole menu. If you're in town and want to try Burmese food, this is a place to go. They open limited business hours. Please check before you go. They have a decent sized dining room that has a couple of televisions around the walls. One of the televisions was playing praise music videos, while the other one was off. This is an authentic Burmese restaurant and has a menu full of traditional favorites. Most of their food revolves around rice, noodles, fish and chicken. They only have canned drinks. There is no fountain I will admit that this is not the cleanest restaurant around. The floor, ceiling and walls could definitely use a good scrubbing. The waitress was friendly enough. I ordered their Spicy Curry Chicken. It took about 8 minutes for me to get my food and as advertised, it had a little punch to it. I wish I was more educated on how the meal was supposed to go together. It came with a soup, lettuce and baby carrots, some white rice, a hot sauce, and the spicy chicken. I did not know what went with what or how to exactly eat it. So, I just mixed the chicken with the rice and skipped the hot sauce, because the chicken was hot enough. It was a very good meal and at a reasonable price. In keeping with my venturing out and trying new things. This was a nice spot to visit and they have some really good food. I recommend checking this place out, but maybe learn a bit about Burmese cuisine like I did.

Perhaps the words got rearranged, and we are supposed to put them in order to solve a clue. No? Well, sorry to bother you -- I'll leave you to sit with your normal thoughts. But if this name has vexed you like it has me, then the first paragraph of this Yelp review is for you. Mostly, I visited Htaw Metta to confirm the pronunciation of Htaw Metta, and to make sure it's not a covert clue. The owner himself told me it's pronounced "TAW Meh-TAW," the H is silent. OK! What a relief to know. Now I can stop trying to rearrange the letters, and stop repeating "Hotta Metta" in my head whenever this restaurant comes up on Yelp. With the pronunciation squared away, I was able to enjoy my solo-dolo Burmese meal. It was 92 degrees outside, but the only thing I wanted was soup. Asian soup hits differently, and I feel like you can eat Asian soup in any weather. So I got a steamy bowl of ohn no khao swe, which is a coconut and chicken curry soup. I've never had it before, and the vermicelli noodles were a touch more cooked than I prefer, but maybe it's made that way? This was my first Burmese food experience, so I knew nothing. I just sat down and ordered the dishes that looked the most Burmese and the most popular. The soup was delicious and had lots of things in it: a hardboiled egg, green beans, some sort of cake (fish cake?). I also ordered the Burmese samosas, because they sounded great. Little fried triangles of dough stuffed with potato! I was the only person dining in Htaw Metta for a while, because I was there for an early dinner. But soon after, a family came in, and then a couple, and Htaw Metta was poppin'. That made me happy to see lots of people in there. Before they got busy, though, the owner came to chat with me about all kinds of things. The service is excellent and quick, and the restaurant itself is cute and colorful. This is yet another great restaurant in my favorite adopted neighborhood of Nora.

I'll definitely be back for a few new dishes.
