I've been on a pho kick lately and this is a go to spot for me. Wish they offered lunch specials because I order midday often and many places do offer lunch specials. Pros: consistency, great pho, great spring rolls. AMAZING chili oil - I bought the to go version to take home and it's the spiciest chili oil I've ever had at a pho place (which is a big deal to me!) Con: order delivery lately and their drinks aren't ready by the time I'm picking up. That's it! Restaurant is clean, service is good. This is my third time having Pho and I must say that this place is going to be my GO TO!!! I've tried one other pho spot in Indy, but Pho 21 checked all the boxes for me. Initially when walking in, no one was dining in. I was going to place my order to go, but decided to dine in. It was pretty quiet, clean and open. It was almost closing time and a few employees were cleaning. It smelled so clean throughout; making for an even better dining experience. The service was great! I didn't have to wait long at all before my bowl was coming out. I went with beef and brisket pho. The condiments were fresh. The sauces were full. Before adding any sauces, I wanted to try the broth by itself. And when I did, that's when I knew that Pho 21 has secured me as a customer. I truly didn't have to add any sauces, but what is pho if I didn't add some razzle dazzle. I left with my tastebuds satisfied and lips with a slight sizzle. Ha! It really doesn't look like much from the outside and the surrounding area also looks a bit run down. However, a visit here is well worth it. Inside it looks more like an old bar, with an actual bar taking up most of the front part of the restaurant. Towards the back is a lot more seating as well as a karaoke stage. The whole place looks a bit outdated, BUT... the food is great. The menu is quite extensive and I had a tough time deciding what to go with. I really enjoyed my spring rolls and my bowl of rice noodles with beef, not sure of the official name. The server continuously refilled our waters and was always ready to fulfill all of our needs. Yes it's worth it! Banh Beo (B4) is excellent! It's soooo good. Im coming back just for this. I think I just found my favorite Vietnamese restaurant in Indy. Their vermicelli with beef and egg roll (34 Bun Thor Heo) is delicious too but the Banh Beo is the star. I practically ate the whole appetizer by myself even though it's a sharing dish. Pho-ever shirt from the woman is a lovely touch and the really cool grandpa who took my order was really kind and friendly. You can tell this is a beloved family own place. Our foodie group decided to have a late lunch at Pho 21 on a Sunday afternoon. Pho 21 is on East 21st Street in the Arlington area close to downtown. It is a Vietnamese restaurant located in a rundown strip mall, but do not let the location fool you or steer you away, because it is a great place for Vietnamese food. The ambiance reminded me of an old sports bar that went down under because they had a nice bar in the middle of the restaurant with wooden tables and chairs all around the place and wood paneling on the walls. There are very nice plants in the foyer as you walk into the restaurant, so it does give the place some character. The menu is extensive and prices are very reasonable. I ordered the spring rolls as an appetizer and the rice plate with chicken, ginger, and veggies. I ordered an iced tea to drink and received what looked like hot green tea poured over ice in a glass. It was actually very good, so I was not complaining. The food was excellent and was impressive. My spring rolls tasted great with the dipping sauce and my rice plate was fantastic and a very big portion. Everyone in our group had big portions and was very happy with their food. One person ordered chicken wraps and had to roll her own wraps with the chicken and side items provided to her, and it was entertaining to see her try to roll the chicken wrap. The service is decent for what you get is all I can say about Pho 21. There were two young gentlemen taking care of us the entire time and they were nice and professional. They kept our water glass full of water and made sure we had everything we need which is all that we wanted. I was happy with my dining experience at Pho 21 and would recommend coming here for the food because it is definitely worth the price and it will not hurt your bank account at all. I was really craving Vietnamese food and wanted to get some for Lunar New Year. I placed my order online and had a scheduled pickup. I ordered Bun Rieu ($12) and a Banh mi ($6). I was really disappointed by the bun rieu. The broth was thin and not flavorful. It normally is a thick and rich reddish color and this broth was not that way at all. It came with a decent portion of vegetables and noodles. I ate the Banh mi for lunch the next day. I recommend heating it up in the oven because you want the bread to be crispy! The Banh mi was good; but wasn't as big as a portion as I am used to (in terms of how long the bread is). Also, the cucumber normally is in long thin slices and comes on the side. Additionally, the pickled vegetables usually comes on the side. However in this Banh mi, the cucumber was cut in circles. I know that might seem like an odd comment to make, but as someone who has eaten a lot of Banh mi and is Vietnamese this is worth noting! I had to add my own cucumber when I ate my sandwich. Some of the best spring rolls with a nice variety to choose from. Located off of Franklin and 21st. This spot is well worth the trip. The portion sizes are filling. Ok so I've never had Vietnamese food before so please forgive me if I botch a description. First beware there is alot of pork, catfish and shrimp on the menu if you care about abstaining from those items BUT there are plenty of other options including tofu. I had the tofu spring rolls. Very different from Chinese. These have soft clear wrappings. Which again this is my first time sp if you're thinking duh... it's. They are not like the Chinese spring rolls. They were quite good. Everything seemed to be made fresh and packaged with precision... and I'm still talking about the spring roll! You can see through the clear casing and all the items inside were perfectly placed, not just thrown in it an wrapped up. Anyway it came with a sweet sauce with crushed peanuts. So that's another thing to watch if you have an allergy... lots of peanuts on the menu. So I am very particular about my fish. I talked to the young man/server behind the bar because I was deeply concerned about the fish. I am Torah Observant so the easiest way to explain to people is my fish has to have fins and scales. This young listened to me and communicated the fish and ingredients. He really took the time to listen and engage, which I appreciate because I would say about 50% of the time people don't really care to understand what I'm asking about what's in my food. I decided on the mackerel. Since I was taking mine Togo and never been here before, he explained how I should put it together and eat it once I got home. I can't tell you how helpful this young man was ! I dont know how the mackerel was prepared but it was not fried and had some crushed peanuts on it too. And holy mackerel! It was Delicious! It came with the noodles and veggies which were mint leaves and some other leaves, carrots, cabbage... I think and cucumbers maybe... and a small container of the soup mixture. Again forgive me for being clueless but feel free to correct me. There was definitely enough for 2 people. The place is alot bigger inside than it looks outside. It's very nice and welcoming and calming inside. Very clean . It took about 20 mins after I ordered but that's ok. Bring friends and sit back and enjoy a nice peaceful atmosphere and get freshly prepared food. I dony know what all they had to drink but I did see some coke products and beer. I would have given 5 of the bun Bo hue was better. 1. Service was courteous but not prompt. There were only a few occupied tables but it took a while for them to take our order which is unusual for a Vietnamese place because they usually want you in/out quickly. There were 2 servers and LV my 5 tables including ours but 3 of the tables already received their checks before our order was even taken. 1. Banh beo - ok this is really legit good. Very authentic, super fresh. I would come back just for this. 2. Pho 21 - broth was good but they don't offer tripe and I think to be authentic pho you have to serve all the odd bits. Broth was good and clear not murky like I have seen at some places 3. Bun bo hue - this was the disappointment. The broth tasted like they used pho broth and added some spice to it. It did not have that deep spicy and lemongrass flavor you would except from bun bo hue. Not very authentic and did not have the pig knuckle that you also expect. Also they were very stingy on the meat. There wasn't much meat in the bowl. Probably very small pieces of pork loaf thinly sliced and about and inch in diameter and 3 thin slices of beef.
