So this wasn't our first choice of places to go for dinner, however, we stumbled in because it was the only place that didn't have reservations up until late in the night. We had a small wait before being seated but after we sat it took very long for our orders to be taken. Once we ordered the pho, they came pretty quickly. I had high expectations prior to seeing anything reviews, I noticed it being busy and the aroma smelled nice. After trying my seafood pho, I was pretty disappointed. The brother tasted like regular chicken broth you'd get in the box/can with a little bit of added spices... did they just continued to add water to their soups to make more batches??? The noodles were limited... the "large" bowl isn't as large as most pho spots would give. They brought it out without the soup spoon and just never checked on us throughout to even give us a chance to ask. The fresh spring rolls were ok tasting though. First thing, before you do anything else, taste the broth. The broth is THE measure of a good pho. I suspect that some places stretch the broth with water, especially toward the end of the day. My most recent visit to Pho Pasteur (where I've been many times) was for lunch when it wasn't very busy. The broth was complex and rich. Wow. No stretch. I'd forgotten how good a simple chicken soup can be. I also got the spring rolls with peanut dipping sauce. So good! The shrimp are thumb-size. The pork looked like real pork, not pressed sandwich meat. It makes sense. They're so busy that their food-turnover has to keep things fresh in the kitchen. I was on my way home from errands in Downtown Crossing and needed lunch. I wanted to sit and eat. IOW, I didn't want carry-out. I love pho, and have had good food at Pho Pasteur in the past (deep fried quail!!), but I was worried about the guy at the door. My preference is to sit by a window, both for the light and the people-watching. But to do so, I would have to get by the guy at the door. I have never had trouble with seating when in the company of a man but Door Guy doesn't seem to like seating singletons at tables by the front. He has (in the past) insisted on seating me in the back even though there were window-tables available and I asked very clearly. In fact, I stopped going for awhile because of Door Guy but then the place next door went under during Covid. It was Pho Pasteur or ... I went for it. Got past Door Guy. Showed my Vax Card. Pho Pasteur is no frills delicious Vietnamese cuisine and when I say no frills I mean Chinatown NY hole-in-the-wall but damn that food is good type of place. Not to mention they move QUICK so if you need fast service, this is a great spot. However, I came to catch up with my one of my hometown pals and enjoy a warm bowl of noodles and the speed of service is actually why I deducted a star. Two minutes after I sat down, we were asked what we want to order - I had not even opened up the menu yet. We kindly asked for more time. 3 minutes later they came back. They must've thought I speed read. Essentially in 10 minutes we were approached 4 times if we were ready to order and not even always by the same server. It felt unnecessarily pushy when other tables around us seemed to have the luxury of having a conversation. In the end though, when it comes to the food - we each ordered a Bo Bun Hue - my go-to Vietnamese noodle bowl (sorry pho! This broth is just so much deeper in flavor!). It was divine, LARGE, and cheap. I gobbled up and drank every bit of it. Super tasty. I'd like to return to try their pho one day as I assume their namesake should be equally, if not better, than their BBH (but it'd be pretty hard to top). read more

I frequent this place for takeout when I'm looking for some yummy pho! I usually always go with the Pho Ga as it's my favorite. Getting pho for takeout is usually difficult I find because you often miss out on all of the extra sides & sauces, but this place gave me a huge bag with everything and even gave me the little sauces I requested for the side (you'd be surprised at how many places ignore those requests or forget that!) so I'm very happy with them!! Will definitely be ordering from here again. Bonus: the prices are phenomenal. They offer different sizes - small, large, etc which is a huge plus. I wanted to try this place since the main Vietnamese restaurants in Chinatown are here and Dong Khanh. Seems like finding good pho in Boston is like looking for a unicorn. Sadly, this place is a horse with a fake horn glued to the front. This restaurant is more spacious and looks better inside than DK. We came on a Sunday night and they were mildly busy, about 70% of the restaurant was occupied. The Food: It's cold so obviously most of us got the House Pho (#12), but one friend got the number #15 (House Pho minus the steak and brisket). We got our food within 5-7 minutes! Very fast service, I guess because they want a fast turnover for tables. My pho was just average, the broth was nothing to brag about, which is the most important part of pho. For being an X-tra large bowl, all of us finished everything. The amount of meat they give is fine, but it's mostly noodles and I only counted 2 pieces of tripe in my bowl. The Service: Started off good, our initial server was very nice and friendly. Took our orders in a reasonable amount of time. Sadly, that was the last we saw of him. Someone else brought our food out. Then someone different, right after we were done, came to our table and was like "Are you all done?" Then she proceeded to rush us our bill, clear our plates, and essentially push us out. Off we paid, she was literally standing next to me, I guess maybe to pressure us further to leave. Service was quick, but also awkward, kitchen runners delivered to nearest empty plates which left us switching things around to where each person finally had their ordered dish. had been a frequent patron in years past. sad to say, this place has gone down hill. small portion in relation to price tag would be understandable for Boston downtown location, but the portion still seems smaller than what we used to get - the large pho really is medium (if even) measuring by the amount of noodle in the bowl. they appeared busy (or just short-staffed?) even when only 60% of the place was filled. we were a group of five; were seated after a few minutes of waiting despite several empty tables in sight, because no one came to the front to seat us. we ordered couple shakes with an appetizer along with our rice/noodle dishes. waited a bit for our food to come sporadically (not together). one of our dish orders was wrong (but quickly corrected); another got a duplicate. small glitches with service at bare minimum. food quality on most dishes was ok. shakes are on point. the grilled meat/mix vermicelli looked good. my "pork chop pho" did not appear to have the same kind of grilled pork chop one would see on the rice dish -- the meat has flavor, but it's white and thick instead of brown and thinner as it would be on the rice, and it's submerged in my hot soup. the other dish that came out wrong the first time, the beef was said to be too chewy. two things worth noting: 1) the tile flooring seemed sticky/greasy to a point it was slippery, so tread carefully. 2) ladies room toilet tranforms into Old Ye Faithful upon flushing (no joke!), so get your nice clothes and shoes wayyy out of the way to avoid getting splashed. the stall is tight too. for old times' sake, they get a 3-star, though I am beginning to wonder why still the long lines. with all the new things popping out in the area and a much better pho place we have found off Boston where we frequent, there really is not an urgent need to return. read more

This is our staple restaurant if we want to have pho while in Boston. We have been here for years and the hubby want to go for pho. Ok. Over the years the bowl gets smaller and the broth gets bland. It is not as full flavored as it used to be. Maybe it's just today. Just not the same bowl as I have had in the past . Was disappointed. Quality and quantity subpar . Very hard to get anyone's attention to order. We waited and waited . The next table that came 15 min after us got their order taken right after us . After getting my Covid booster shot at Tufts Medical Center, I came here to grab takeout. The food was better than I remembered it to be. Firstly, there was a very generous portion of beef provided in the pho. Many of the pho places near my home give barely enough meat for one meal. Pho Pasteur charges a few dollars more, but I'm okay with paying a little more for extra protein which can allow for additional meals. The thing that I didn't like was that the pho broth was fatty and salty. I make pho at home and always like to see how restaurants will make it. The summer rolls were well made, probably the best I've ever seen them. There was definitely some extra care used in making them as they were tightly wrapped and didn't fall apart upon eating. The pork chop rice plate also exceeded my expectations with two large well marinated pork chops. Unfortunately, the rice seemed a bit hard. Maybe the rice was leftover from yesterday? I know that many Asian restaurants will keep rice in the large commercial rice cookers until it's all sold out. Overall, Pho Pasteur demonstrated why they are a mainstay in the city. It was even better than the local Brighton/Allston place I usually frequent. I will certainly return! read more
