A quick stop for dinner for the family on an out of town vacation led us to a place close by: Pho Hoang. The restaurant is an area of variety of other businesses close by. We walked in a more laid back time with not many people and seated ourselves. There were a few items on the menu I had to mentally translate since I'm familiar with the names of the dishes when I eat in Chinatown-Little Saigon. I decided to go with the Vietnamese coffee and rock and roll beef also known as Vietnamese shaking beef. I did make an adjustment and did fried rice and an egg on top. The Vietnamese coffee is solid. It has that flavor and concentration you expect especially phin filter with condensed milk. The rock and roll beef is a good choice too. The steak cubes are tender and has the nice accompaniment of onions, tomatoes and cucumber. The sauce packed that nice garlic punch which the steak absorb. The fried rice is a nice upgrade from regular white rice but both would be good choices. Overall it was a nice visit to Pho Hoang. It was very straightforward and our server was nice too. No complaints. From my personal experience of drinking Vietnamese coffee for years, I think my tolerance is much stronger to it and found this one today as concentrated but not as bold like I am used too. But this is still very good. There are some staple dishes offered and seen also include a fried fish platter and a few other additions. No desserts on the menu and strictly just classic Vietnamese dishes. read more

It is extremely rare for me to score a restaurant this low. However, this one barely eked out two stars because of two things: The server was terrific; she so deserved to be in a better restaurant. The other saving grace was the broth of the beef pho. It was just right...perfect flavoring. Unfortunately, the flank steak was obviously old and dried out and contained unappetizing pieces of gristle and fat. The spring rolls were almost inedible, due to shrimps that were well past their freshness and a wrap that just fell apart. The grilled pork bahn me was the worst. It was not served on the traditional French roll but a bolillo that was just grainy and flavorless. I've been on a tour of pho places in seabrook and the surrounding areas, and this is still the place I continue to return to. The staff is attentive and always super helpful. The owners are very nice as well... I won't say this is the best pho I have ever had, but I can say I am a semi-regular and will continue to be so. Food here has been good since even before the new owner took over. Atmosphere is casual. I love the hot pot rice and the soft spring rolls. They are always satisfying. The Pho is always good. They have a veggie broth for vegetarians by special request. I also recommed the lemon grass shrimp. Anna the owner is very friendly and engages with her customers which I love. Her servers are friendly as well and attentive. This is my go to for Pho and hot pot rice. I've been here twice now while sampling local pho joints. The place across the street in one of my favorite local lunch spots, but I felt like I owed their competitor a shot as well. Overall, I can't say I was very happy with the experience for one simple fact. I have a rule: if you make me sick more than once, your business is off my list of places to eat, and sadly, this place is off. I've been here twice, and I've been sick both times. Food-wise, they were perfectly acceptable. I wasn't able to get my usual pho-accompanying order of spring rolls due to the price ($7.50 for a plate, a bit high for spring rolls IMO, especially compared to Pho 21 across the street). But my steak/brisket/tripe pho was definitely pleasant, albeit at a $10 price tag. Good for the money mostly, despite my bad stomach. One star purely for the food poisoning. This place has been my favorite place with my mom for over a decade. We have found their egg rolls, fish sauce, and plum chicken are unbeatable and no one in this area does it like them. I do not visit this area often, but it was the nearest place to grab some lunch after the Tea Festival at UH Clear Lake. The restaurant itself has great interior design, but I think the food and service is only so-so. The waitresses were friendly, but they are not always available. This is not a traditional pho restaurant that serves mainly pho. The menu shows a lot of other rice, fried seafood, po-boys, etc. and other Vietnamese dishes as well. I ordered the chicken pho, and the regular size is $8.50. It is a big size for the price, but I would rather have a smaller size instead. I liked the broth used for the chicken pho, but find the noodles kind of thick/hard. The chicken was sliced like deli slices which are very different from other pho places I have tried. I think I like the thicker pieces of chicken more as seen at other pho places. I also ordered the thai tea, which I was extremely disappointed with, and even ask the waitress to exchange for a soybean drink at the same price ($3). The thai tea was extremely watered down that no tea flavor was there. The soybean drink was from a can, so that was ok. Overall, it was an ok experience, but I've had better pho. read more

Came here on a Yelp deal. If it weren't for that, I would have given it a 1 star. The whole place had a mild odor of feet. Not too offensive, but definitely not pleasant. It took 20 minutes to bring out our entrees that were supposed to be served with "soup and salad" when they brought out the entrees, I inquired about the soup and and salad. The lady told me the salad was on the plate and that she would bring the soup. The salad she was referring to was two thin slices of cucumbers and a pinch full of shredded lettuce. (Usually most plates are served with something like this and it isn't considered a "salad") Then she brought out the soup. It was nothing but a simple broth. Nothing else but perhaps a bouillon cube and hot water. This "soup and salad" with your entree is very misleading. To add salt to the wound there was vermicelli in my rice, and some rice in my girlfriends vermicelli. This would indicate cross contamination in the kitchen. read more

First off, it was as cold in the restaurant as it was outside! Food: we ordered the BBH ($8.75) and pad thai ($9.95). I knew it was a mistake to order Thai food at a Vietnamese restaurant, but that was what I was in the mood for since they didn't have the pan fried noodles (listed in the menu). We opted not to order the pho because it costs nearly $10 for a bowl of pho with sliced beef and meatballs. Crazy! But the BBH tasted just like pho, except for the light orange appearance. Overall, it looked and tasted awful. As for the pad thai, the beef was hard and overcooked, the veggies were skimpy and the color of the sauce was almost black...like it was drenched in black bean sauce. Service: just OK...I just wished the waiter knew at least Vietnamese or English. He couldn't understand that we didn't want pig feet. Overall: I will NOT return. If you're serving a spring roll it shouldn't taste like Oscar Mayer! My pho was tasty although they skimped on basil. Joy to the World -- Christmas comes early at Pho Hoang! I enjoyed a delicious lunch today with fellow Yelper Crystal P. We started out with some iced tea and lime, an order of tasty and warm grilled chicken spring rolls (my favorite), and a generous helping of peanut sauce. Then we both had the vermicelli bowl with Vietnamese egg rolls and put way too much Sriracha, but that was my fault -- I can't blame anyone else for that one. Pho Hoang is one of my usual lunch spots because of the noodle soup and grilled chicken spring rolls -- both the best things on the menu as far as I'm concerned. Also the service is pretty good though they can get really busy at times during the lunch hours. The first half of our lunch was business as usual but then something new happened... they played Christmas music. I usually don't pay too much attention to the music but today it was hard not to miss. They played Hark! The Harold Angels Sing and then Joy to the World. We were laughing hysterically and placing bets on which Christmas jingle we thought we'd hear next when they played a Carrie Underwood song. Filled with questions about how this occurred and disappointment that the trend didn't continue on, we paid our bill and left. I ordered their recommended dish and summer roll. I was not impressed with the food nor the service. First the summer rolls didnt taste good, the seafood sauce helped save the day. Second the recommended dish tasted like something out of a Chinese take out. If I had wanted Chinese I wouldn't have came here. My husband and I decided to try Pho Hoang because a coworker recommended their "Tofu Hot Pot with Beef" and oh my goodness! We are somewhat of Pho and Hot Pot Connoisseurs. We love trying authentic places to see who has the best. This is our absolute favorite and we drive an hour ONE WAY to eat it! We always order the pork spring rolls for an appetizer and one of the owners will bring out a special spicy homemade sauce (upon request) if you mention that you like spice. The peanut sauce that they serve with the spring rolls is by far the best. I don't like peanut sauce, but I love theirs!! We always order the "Tofu Hot Pot with Beef" and it comes with rice. Be careful because it is warmed to perfection and is served hot, fresh off the fire! The flavor is unlike any Pho or Hot Pot we have eaten ANYWHERE. The Hot Pot has carrots, mushrooms, green onions (I think), and onions in it. The spice is perfect and the flavors are an epic blend that literally will make your mouth water for more! I can never finish my own bowl of Pho or Hot Pot, but I can here!! The service is outstanding (the two owners run the dining area themselves). The pho tofu is great. I really liked the fried tofu chunks and the broth of the pho was good. I am worried that the broth isn't actually vegetarian, but I really didn't have a way of finding out. I came here during lunch time and there was a crowd. You seat yourself when you walk in. Make sure they see you before you sit somewhere. Also there weren't a lot of places to sit when I got there (everything was packed). Luckily I found a table for two (I eat by myself a lot). The waitress was busy with some other customers but brought me a menu as soon as she could. I looked at the drinks and ordered the Jasmine tea and an ice water when my waiter got there. He asked if I wanted anything else and I said I need a minute and he seemed confused because he asked me if all I was getting was my drink. I said no, I just don't know what I want yet. He understood and came back when I was ready. The Pho was good and it came with a good pile of vegetables to put in it. I wish there was another lime though. The tea was also really good. I also ordered vegetable egg rolls but I had a hard time identifying what vegetables were in it. Anyway it took forever to get a refill of my ice water. The waiter rarely checked on me. Luckily the waitress who brought me my menu realized I was looking around and she got me an ice water. I finished as much as I could, but hot tea, hot pho, and little water on a hot day didn't sit too well with me. If I had more refills I would have been fine. I drank my first and only refill so fast. I did leave a good tip, but mostly because I like to support local restaurants. I probably would go back, but it would have to be at a different time of day when they could pay more attention to me. We went to Pho Hoang yesterday to pick up two noodle soups. The main reason I'm giving such a low rating is that when I got my noodle soup (Crab, Shrimp, and Pork with Clear Noodles) it was lukewarm and basically cold by the time i put in all bean sprouts, herbs, and Sriracha. There was neither any crab meat nor pork. As for the shrimp, there were three halves of shrimp, three tiny halves. The broth was good tho. The only reason I am giving this place any stars at all is that my wife's soup was delicious. She got the wonton chicken soup with egg noodles. Tons of chicken with delicious wontons. Too bad my Pho was bad. Looks like we will be going across the street from now on. Oh yah! The prices on their website are THREE dollars cheaper than their actual menu prices.
