Egg Rolls / Chả Giò and special pho
Emily F.

Stopped in for lunch and wasn't busy. Ordered and sat right away. I tried the egg rolls and special pho which they still had in two size options. I got the small bowl but was hoping for the rare beef pho but only sell it as a large bowl now. Food came out incredibly fast and nice and hot. Egg rolls were fairly tasty but a bit extra oily/greasy. The soup was hot and broth was delicious. Meat was all a bit over cooked but pretty good. I'd check it out again to try some other menu items tho.

Chicken pho (size small)

After eating here 5+ times and ordering to go, I figured I should write a review. I usually get the chicken noodle pho (size small is good for one person) the broth is very good just the right temperature, and the chicken tastes good. I always order their egg rolls and they are very yummy too. I highly recommend this restaurant. You walk in and order at the front and you have a seat afterwards. The restaurant is nice inside and there's enough seats to either sit alone or with a group (it's not a big space but it's enough for a quick lunch or dinner). I believe this is a family run place and everyone is so nice and handles your order with care. I will keep coming back.

Lovely spot! The pho was quite delicious, albeit smaller and pricier than other spots. They were generous with limes when I asked for more :)

Vegetarian Pho

Well, I'm sad this restaurant replaced my drunk pizza place, but overall it looks like it's an upgrade! I was especially happy to see that they had a vegetarian pho - and even more surprising, it was actually pretty good! I appreciate that they cooked the vegetables, but I also would've wanted more variety - it was pretty much only carrots and potatoes. The price point wasn't awful. My friends who ordered meat looked like they got generous portions.

Beef vermicelli

Fast and friendly service, plenty of seating and clean interior! Nice for a quick bite and pho fix - short rib pho : clean broth and great flavor! Disappointed that the short rib had very little beef, it was just bone scrap as the meaty part was taken out - beef vermicelli : good lemongrass seasoning, fish sauce was authentic enough with flavor. No complaints

Great addition to Divis! This spot is owned by the same people who run the banh mi place across the street and the massage place close by. Turns out their pho is pretty solid as well. Really casual spot perfect for a lunch or a quick dinner. I got a large pho ga and thought I would have leftovers but surprised myself and finished the whole thing. The broth was very flavorful and hit the spot on a chilly rainy day. I didn't even have to add hoisin or sriracha. I thought noodles were a bit too thin for my taste, but still very enjoyable. Also, the service is incredibly quick! We paid and then turned around and the bowl was piping hot and ready.

Chả Giò: Fried Egg Rolls w/ pork, vermicelli, carrot, "rice paper" (5 pc - $10) - Regular wheat-based egg roll wrapper used

3.5 STARS Last week was OOOFF with the power outages and jury duty... Time for some self-care with a steaming phở facial! Phở Divis opened in early this month at the former Square Pie Pizza Shop. Same owner as Bánh Mì Viet across the street and at Glen Park. Fast-casual, order at the counter, grab a number placard, and seat yourself. Self-serve water. M E N U Small one pager menu: apps, phở (no bbh), rice places, and bún. F O O D * Chả Giò: Fried Egg Rolls w/ pork, vermicelli, carrot, rice paper (5 pc - $10): https://tinyurl.com/3vx7fzsf Freshly fried, hot and crunchy with a dry filling (little pork). The focus was def on the crunchy wrapper. While the menu states, they use rice paper, they don't. Bummer. Rice paper makes a big difference in texture; i.e crispy-chewy. The accompanying nước chấm was diluted and overly sweet. * Phở Đặc Biệt w/ beef rib, rare beef, meatballs, rice noodles (Small-$14): https://tinyurl.com/2s4a99vz A very basic combo with three proteins (no tripe, tendon, or brisket available). - Broth: Northern-style broth, light and savory. I appreciated that it wasn't hella salty or msg-y but could use more fish sauce for flavor. Not sweet and spice forward like Southern-style. - Rice noodles: Soft and slippery, prefer more of a chewy bite. - Rare beef: Three thin slices of very lean eye round steak. Quite tough since it gets overcooked in the broth. - Meatball: One beef meatball, halved. Tasted like freezer burn. =( - Rib: Rich and fatty, about 2 oz of meat. Served with a plate of fresh bean sprouts, basil, jalapeño, and basil. They don't skimp! Just an fyi, if you have a specific way of enjoying your phở (IFYKYK): - Rare beef on the side - Blanched bean sprouts - Vinegar white onions - Nước béo: fatty broth They don't offer that here (I tried asking). S E R V I C E Super sweet owner-couple and love the fast service! Not trying to be a Karen but one of the young staff needs to be trained to cover their coughs instead of coughing towards customers' faces. A M B I A N C E Casual, minimalist with 7-8 tables and open kitchen. Restroom available. Overall, I'm in the minority and thought the food was just ok, it does the job if you live/work within walking distance in NoPa. It seems catered to the American palate....nothing wrong with that, just manage your expectations if you're used to Viet food in the TL or E Man Jose. 3.5 stars rounded up for their wallet-friendly prices.

I'm so happy this Vietnamese restaurant opened near my church. Japantown/Divisadero was lacking a Vietnamese restaurant cause the other one isn't open on Sundays. My friends and I came here for the first time. We ordered individually at the counter and got our own water cups, which is good for splitting the bill for our group of 5. I ordered short rib pho small $14 which came with bean sprouts and mint leaves and very yummy. Unlike the restaurants in Japantown, they don't charge SF health care fee which is good! I would come back again to try the bahn xeo Viet crepe from the seasonal menu. They don't have the traditional egg meatloaf and shredded pork if ordering the rice dish. They also have regular egg rolls instead of imperial rolls even though there was a Vietnamese speaking family there working when we were there. However, it's good enough for pho and the prices are reasonable!

Pho Special
Benjamin L.

The Large Pho Special ($19) had ok flavor. The broth was well-balanced and the meat itself was ok. However, the portion size didn't match the price point. For a "large," the protein amount was disappointing: three small meatballs, two small pieces of flank, and a single small short rib. I've had smaller portion pho elsewhere with noticeably more meat. Taste-wise it's ok, but the value doesn't hold up. 2 stars.

Vegetarian Pho

First time trying this place out with a colleague. Loved that they had a couple of veggie options to choose from: pho or a rice plate. My colleague and I both went with the pho, which was so amazingly delicious! I always love to pair mine with lemon and sliced jalapeños. The veggies cooked into the pho were so tender and flavorful with the broth. The noodles also made the overall soup/dish very filling. Considering the busy location and it being a Sat. evening, parking was a bit challenging but I was able to park a block away at a small shopping center for a bit. The restaurant itself was a bit snug inside. One of the waitresses bumped into me when I placed my order up front and didn't even apologize. The man who took our order was cool though. Then another male employee came to our table and asked us if we were done, and he wasn't friendly about it. It didn't really make us feel too welcome inside, but the pho was so good that I may just consider taking it to-go next time.

Vietnamese iced coffee, small short rib pho

Great pick-me-up during a rainy day! Fast-casual with VERY quick service (order at counter and seat yourself) with a good amount of tables in a modest but clean place. Ordered a small short rib pho, the broth was light but could've been a bit more flavorful, and the meat fell of the bone. Portion was super generous, especially for $14. Chili added a nice fragrance. Vietnamese iced coffee was a bit too sweet.

Stopped by Pho Divis for lunch after a night out drinking. The broth was extremely flavorful and comforting, but I do wish the ribs had more meat on them. The indoor space is pretty small, so you might have to wait in line on a busier day.

Beef rib pho in small

Tried the special beef pho noodle soup and beef rib pho noodle soup. Surprisingly not bad at all! You order at the counter before sitting down, so you just leave after you're done eating. The menu is smaller than other pho places, but they have the basics. The food came out after like a minute literally, it was so fast. Amazing if you're in a rush! The noodles were well cooked and bouncy. The soup was hot and fairly flavorful, just not as deep as a flavor that I would like (if it was long simmered). The beef rib is a nice added touch to the usual pho, and the amount of meat on it varies, well at least the rib in the beef rib soup was more meaty than the one in the special bowl. Overall, not bad. Satisfied a pho craving, and we were in and out of there in half an hour. Would be back to try the vermicelli

Based on the meal I had at the one in San Mateo, I can't say I would've predicted I'd be writing…read moreabout this Gao for my 1,900th review nor that I'd be giving it five stars. Not that my experience was bad or anything; I just didn't think the food was as impressive as others made it out to be. That being said, part of me always wondered if we just didn't try the best of what they have to offer. Now that I've enjoyed multiple meals here, I KNOW that was very much the case! If you didn't know beforehand, you'd never guess that this place used to be a KFC/Taco Bell. However, as awesome of a job as they did to completely change the look of the space, the menu is even more impressive. Not only was it easier to read than the one in San Mateo (I remember it felt cluttered), but everything just sounded more appealing. From their Vietnamese street eats, starters, and cocktails to their seafood entrees, specialties, and noodle soups, nearly every dish sounded too good not to try! -- BIG GAO PHO - Beef Rib, Filet Mignon, Bone Marrow, Onion, Green Onion, Cilantro, and Rice Noodles...$41 Honestly, I get why everyone says good things about Gao's pho. More than how obviously loaded the bowl was, the rib and filet mignon were terrific and the broth was rich and flavorful yet not heavy/greasy. -- BO NE - Filet Mignon, Sweet Sausage, Pate, Fried Egg, Ham, Tomato, Onion, Green Onion, BBQ Sauce, and Bread (or Rice)...$45 Not only was the portion huge, but it tasted great! The beef was super tender, the eggs were cooked perfectly, the bread was soft yet crusty, and I really liked the sauce that everything sat in. -- SAUSAGE SPRING ROLL (Nem Nuon Cuon) - Pork Sausage, Rice Paper, Vermicelli, Lettuce, Cucumber, Mint, Beansprout, Fried Egg Roll Wrapper, and Pickled Carrots and Daikon with Peanut Sauce...$15 While this wasn't the best I've had, it's not far behind. Along with how plump the rolls were, the pork was really juicy and the veggies were super fresh. Too bad they don't have a dipping sauce like Brodard's! -- IMPERIAL ROLLS (Cha Gio) - Ground Pork, Wood Ear Mushroom, Vermicelli, Carrot, Taro, Onion, Rice Paper, Lettuce, Mint, Pickled Carrot, and Daikon...$16 Nothing amazing, but no less delicious. Each time we've had this, the rolls have been crispy and fairly sizable. Plus, I love how the egg rolls have never been all that oily either! -- BEEF BOY PHO with Beef Rib Cubes, Filet Mignon, Bone Marrow, and a 24-hour Beef Broth...$36 As intrigued as I was by their other varieties, I couldn't resist trying the smaller version of the Big Gao Pho. Surprisingly, I actually thought this was better - no bones to deal with and still just as delicious and meaty. -- BUN CHA - Fatty Pork Meatball, Pork Belly, Chili, Fish Sauce, Lettuce, Vermicelli, Cucumber, Mint, Green Onion, Pickled Carrot, and Daikon...$30 I was pretty excited to try this and, thankfully, it turned out great! The pork meatballs were juicy and the pork belly was so luscious. I also liked how they didn't skimp on the vegetables either! So good. -- WHAT DA DUCK PHO (Pho Vit) - Duck Breast Marinated in a House Sauce, Roasted and Pan Seared, in a Pork & Beef Broth...$36 This didn't amaze like some of the other dishes here, but it was more than solid. The noodles had a nice bite to them and it came with a fair amount of duck, which was tender and quite flavorful. -- FISH SAUCE CHICKEN WINGS with Vietnamese Coriander, Garlic, Chili, Jalapeno, Bell Pepper, Lettuce, and Onions...$17 So, so good! The wings were really crispy and moist, but the fish sauce glaze/sauce on this was what made this stand out - a bit salty, a bit spicy, and lets of umami. -- TURMERIC FISH & DILL - Tumeric-Marinated Fish Pan-Seared with Dill and Onion, Served Sizzling with Vermicelli, Herbs, and Dipping Sauce...$37 Not as good as my favorite in San Jose, but still so tasty. The fish was crispy and flaky with the right mix of dill and turmeric to it. Plus, the portion was so big, I easily got two meals out of this. -- UBE COFFEE - Vietnamese Iced Coffee Topped with Ube Sweet Cream...$8.50 This was a little sweeter than I prefer, but it was delicious! The coffee tastes so good and is well complemented by the ube. Yum! Beyond how good the food is, the other thing that has stood out about Gao has been the service. In addition to just being able to take large party reservations (we've been here twice with 14+ people), the servers have always been so patient and friendly. Plus, one time, when our server realized that she gave us the wrong beers, she ended up taking them off our bill even though we told her we didn't mind - so nice! Despite how it's pricier than your average Vietnamese restaurant (it's also a lot nicer), it's safe to say I'm now a big fan of Gao. So much so that I feel like I need to go back to their San Mateo spot just to update my review...and to have another excuse to try even more of the food. FOUR AND A HALF STARS rounded up.

The cozy, warm interior dining room sets a great mood, but it's the food--and the iconic plastic bibs--that make it an unforgettable experience. Breakdown of our order off the menu: STARTERS * Dungeness Crab Puffs: Flaky, light wonton shells packed with minced crab, pine nuts, and herb cheese, served alongside a delicious peanut-mustard dipping sauce. * Lemongrass Chicken Satay: Charbroiled, beautifully seasoned skewer chicken garnished with fresh mixed greens--a great bite to start the meal. I booked a week ahead for a family dinner (and was able to move the date the day before), and I'd guess walk-ins face a long wait. The garlic noodles were amazing. I don't think I've ever enjoyed plain noodles so much - that sauce is honestly magical. I'd recommend the place for the noodles alone, but everything else we ordered was super flavorful with great texture too. The shaking beef was beautifully marinated and fall-apart tender, with potatoes and onions mixed in. The crab puffs were an explosion of flavor, loaded with juicy crab meat inside a crispy fried shell. Service was fast, efficient, and friendly. It's definitely on the pricey side (the crab runs about $88, so it's probably best saved for a bigger group, and we kept it simple with a toddler in tow), and the interior is old school, but it has its charm. We were totally happy we tried this spot at last and plan to go back many times.
