    Sunflower Roll
    Melissa L.

One of the best Vietnamese spots I've been to in SF! We were seated promptly and although the prices are not super cheap, everything is still very affordable. We ordered three entrees and an appetizer which was just the right amount of food for three people. The banh xeo was delicious and came with a generous portion of shrimp. The fish sauce had a spicy tang to it too, which was unique. We also got the stone clay pot fish and can I just say, it was the perfect combination of juicy, tender, and creamy. Would definitely recommend! The last entree we ordered was an eggplant and beef dish which was also good but nothing spectacular. For an appetizer, we tried the sunflower roll - a combo between a spring roll and a deep fried egg roll. So so delicious! Overall great experience and would come here again.

Beef Combination Noodle Soup - Rice Noodles, Thin Rare Steak, Flank, Tendon, Beef Meat Balls, and Tripe in Beef Broth

For all of the great restaurants that have called 9th Ave home over the years, it has always been weird to me how the neighborhood has never really had a great pho joint around. There have certainly been a few spots that have come along, but none of them lasted very long nor were they all that good. However, between how long Sunflower Garden has been around, the positive Yelp reviews, and, most significantly, the good things I'd heard from friends, I was both curious and hopeful that they might be able to buck the trend! Taking over the space that used to belong to a Chinese deli/market (which I didn't even realize was gone), Sunflower Garden looks nothing like its predecessor. In fact, the interior or this place still looks relatively new (though, I wouldn't necessarily say that it's modern) and it's fairly large with more than enough space to accommodate larger groups. As for the menu, it covers a fairly wide swath of Vietnamese cuisine, including a number of noodle soups, but it's actually not as pho-centric as I thought it was. While most of their selection is pretty typical (charbroiled meat rice plates, vermicelli bowls, spring rolls, etc.), there are some unexpected offerings too, such as their Banh Xeo, Lotus Root Salad, Salmon Curry, and an assortment of Chinese specialties, like Mongolian Beef. Plus, they have over a dozen vegetarian options to choose from as well. -- (#1) BEEF COMBINATION NOODLE SOUP - Rice Noodles, Thin Rare Steak, Flank, Tendon, Beef Meat Balls, and Tripe in Beef Broth...$16 All in all, this was pretty standard. The noodles were good and I liked how there was a balanced amount of all of the different meats. That said, I wish this had more meat in general and the broth was very generic - not super flavorful but not oily or fatty either. -- (#21) PORK CHOP COMBINATION RICE PLATE - BBQ Pork Chop, Egg Loaf, Shredded Pork, and Pork Rind with Steamed Rice...$18 Super disappointing. Yes, technically, there was a pork chop, but boy was it small. Not only that, but it was such a thin slice! Similarly, there wasn't much shredded pork either, but at least both tasted okay. Also, this came with a fried egg rather than an egg loaf, but I actually preferred that. -- (#E13) GARLIC NOODLES with Tenderloin Beef Cubes (+$7)...$18 The garlic noodles were mostly fine - decently garlicky (though it could've been stronger) and they had a nice bite to them. As for the beef, it wasn't worth the upcharge. I liked that the beef was tender, and the portion size was fair, but it was drenched in sauce, which was really, really salty. -- (#A1) IMPERIAL ROLLS - Deep Fried Rolls Filled with Minced Pork, Carrots, Black Fungus, Mung Beans, Garlic, Taro, and Onions with Lemon Fish Sauce...$11 Not great, but not too shabby either. The rolls were fried to a nice crispiness and I liked that they also came with some vermicelli noodles. However, the rolls aren't all that big and the filling felt light on meat and heavy on taro. -- (#11) CURRY CHICKEN RICE VERMICELLI SOUP...$16 Not the best I've had, but not too shabby either. The noodles were okay, but the chunks of chicken were moist - I just wish there was more of it. As for the curry broth, that was the star - it could've packed more of a punch, but I liked how creamy it was. As far as service goes, it was probably the highlight of all of my experiences here. Similar to what several of my fellow Yelpers have noted, I thought the workers were all really friendly and the food came out rather quickly. Which, in an ironic twist, makes what we had that much more unfortunate. Had the dishes we tried been equally as good, this would've easily been a four star review. However, based on how uneven everything was, it's hard for me to give anything but a three given how you could find the same (or better) not too far away.

7/9/24 Ordered the #15 sunflower vermicelli bowl with pork. Pork was pretty dry but the imperial rolls were delicious Fish sauce was good but not amazing. Portion size was okay. Good for one person for one meal. Pretty standard run of the mill pho. Easy to get a table and quick service. I think the total was like $20?

Reliable Vietnamese spot in the inner sunset! We enjoyed a quick meal and were in and out in less than 45 mins. Expected service for this kind of restaurant and the food was tasty!,

Decided to give Sunflower Garden after a disaster dinner at Kura Revolving Sushi in Stonestown. A friend recommended it saying it's his new favorite pho spot. This place did not disappoint. I like that it wasn't too busy on a Friday night so it was calm and peaceful. We got seated right away with water and menus. Not sure if it's normal of them but the noodles took a while to come out compared to most pho places. I didn't mind at all because when they did come out, it was piping hot and everything looked SO fresh! I personally got the Beef Stew and it had a slight kick. Generous portion of meat and noodles. Each pho came with their own portion of bean sprout, lemon and mint leaves. For my bowl, I think the soup was too hot that overtime, it made my noodle lose its chewy texture and it was getting soft and mushy but the other 2 bowls said their noodles were fine. The prices are pretty standard nowadays. $16-17 each pho dish and the bahn xeo. Service was on point. Every staff member that came to our table said "you're welcome" to each of our "thank you." Small things like that go a long way. They came to refill our water each time without us having to ask and the cleared empty bowls/plates to keep our table spacious. Would come again if we're in the area and craving some pho.

Great service, huge portions, and delicious food! My family and I stopped by for a quick lunch while walking around Irving, and we were pleasantly surprised by the quality and quantity of food here. The waiter was very friendly and gave us hot tea as we were seated. We started out with the BBQ spring rolls which were perfect to share among a party of 4. The beef was flavorful and it had the perfect proportion of noodles to veggies, and the best part was that it didn't fall apart after being dipped in fish sauce :) We each got a main dish but honestly could have shared 3 and been satisfied. The vermicelli bowls were huge, and came with a delicious, slightly spicy lemon fish sauce. The imperial rolls were extremely crispy and had a nice pork and taro filling. Between the BBQ pork and chicken, the pork was more charred and flavorful but both were good. The garlic noodles also had great flavor, and you could definitely see and taste the garlic on them without feeling too buttery or heavy. Overall a great choice for a casual meal and authentic Vietnamese food!

I always went to Perilla for Pho in this neighborhood. They were not open today so I decided to try Sunflower. I did the right thing. Their food is impressive to me. Although the price for a pho is more expensive than Perilla, the quantities are much higher. The #1 (beef combination pho) is about $2 more, but you get lots of beefs (all kinds of beefs). I can barely finish it. Bathroom is also much bigger and cleaner than Perilla.

As a vegetarian person I don't usually get the best options for Vietnamese food but this place had a good amount of options and this spicy noodle soup had really good fried tofu and "vegetarian ham". It soaked up the sauce and had a good flavor. Would def come here again!

Delicious soups and decent veggie options! I loved the spring rolls, veggie imperial rolls. I had the Spicy Hue soup and I appreciated the large amount of tofu that it came with. The service was very kind and checked in frequently. I'll be back to try to veggie pho!

Solid Vietnamese food in the Inner Sunset. Inside is clean and modern with hanging plants and cool decor. Fast service. Came for lunch, and we were seated right away. Portions here are humongous, and one entree could be split between two people. Ordered the sea soup and fried egg rolls. Sea soup: 7/10 Sea soup came in a giant family-sized bowl. It has a tangy sour broth that goes well with the sea food and other veggie toppings. Can be a lot on its own, and it would have been nice to have some rice next time on the side to balance out the flavor. Egg rolls: 9/10 The egg rolls were delicious, with a crispy peel and flavorful filling. The dipping sauce had a refreshing zest.

However my friends and I agreed that the food was rather oily so it didn't make us feel great after eating. It can get crowded inside as well. Service was very slow and it took us a long time to get seated and also get our food. Given the slow service and very oily meats, I probably would not come back. My boyfriend got the Charbroiled beef with garlic noodles and imperial rolls (#24) with an extra order of beef. Our meal was super filling and balanced! They don't skimp out on either the noodles or the protein (definitely could have done without the extra beef we ordered). The chicken was juicy but the skin stayed crispy. The charbroiled beef had the smallest hint of sweetness for me. The noodles had a nice chew to them, and were dry but in the best way possible. A lot of garlic noodles tend to be too oily and leave an unpleasant lingering mouthfeel, but that wasn't the case here. The noodles could have used more garlic for my preference, but I think it was well balanced with the flavorful protein and fish sauce. The imperial rolls were okay and a nice crunchy side. I wouldn't get them as a separate appetizer, but only $1 more to add to your dish is unbeatable. Overall a great experience and I'd definitely bring some friends here for a comforting meal.

I've given this place multiple chances over the years, but unfortunately each experience has been uncomfortable in one way or another. The first time was around 2022. My family and I arrived about 30 minutes before closing, and the owner told us he would still serve us. After seating us, though, he immediately pressured us to order quickly and told us we had to eat fast because they were closing. I was with my elderly relatives too so just turn us away? If that was the case, it would've been better to simply not seat us. Don't be greedy just bc you want a few bucks. Another time, my husband called to order Hanoi-style pho to go, and the owner responded with unnecessary attitude, saying that's the only kind they serve. LOL, ok. The interaction felt rude for no reason. Most recently, we came on Mother's Day. The dishwasher/staff member was also unfriendly. The bun cha was decent according to my mom, and my husband said the beef stew noodle dish was okay, but my pho lacked flavor entirely. I wasn't expecting it to compare to pho in Vietnam or even San Jose, but it tasted very bland so I didn't finish it. The service from the owner continues to be the biggest issue. When we paid, he stood over us while I counted cash, so I felt pressure to count fast and add tip quickly. He left then came back a few seconds later then quickly grabbed the money without even asking whether I needed change and disappeared faster than the wind. The whole interaction felt awkward and pushy. He has a very strange personality. He's honestly very sleazy and has bad energy After several experiences like this, we won't be returning.
