1 Star -- Very Disappointing First Experience I've passed Bodega SF at 138 Mason Street many times on my way to work and had always thought about trying it. Today at lunchtime, I finally decided to give them a chance and placed a DoorDash pickup order for some broth and sugarcane juice. I placed my order at about 12:30 PM. The app showed that Bodega was preparing my order and gave me a pickup time, so I headed over and arrived at approximately 12:55 PM. I was there expecting my order to be ready shortly and checked the status several times. Then, at around 1:00 PM, after I had already arrived and had been waiting, I suddenly received a message saying my order had been canceled. That was extremely disappointing. If something was unavailable or there was a problem fulfilling the order, I would have appreciated knowing much earlier--especially before I made the trip over and waited there while the app continued to show that the order was being prepared. I can't comment on the quality of the food because I never actually received anything. This review is strictly about my first experience trying to order from the restaurant. What makes it even more disappointing is that I pass this place all the time and had genuinely been curious about trying it. I thought this would be a simple introduction to the restaurant and maybe lead to coming back for a full meal another day. Instead, my first experience ended with a canceled order after I had already arrived. If Yelp allowed negative ratings, based on this experience I would give it a -10. Very close to a traditional northern bun cha dish. Bo Luc Lac (3.5/5): soft tender beef cube, potatoes marbles were grilled and tossed in sauce - high quality potatoes. Pearl onions - also delicious. The issue is the SAUCE, the sauce should put all the high quality ingredients together and bring their deliciousness out, but this sauce does the opposite - it overwhelms with butter and it is on the salty side. If they make their sauce more simple, perhaps add citrus sense, that would have been better. This high quality ingredients dish is ruined cause of their sauce. Oysters (3.5/5): high quality oysters but it's ruined because of the sauce again - way too salty and it overwhelms the taste of oyster. They need to reformulate the sauce for this dish. Seafood fried rice (3/5): it is advertised as a seafood fried rice dish, but in fact, very little seafood consists of small portion of crab, 4 pieces of small scallops, some egg. This dish is ruined because of the chinese sausage they use. They should not add the sausage at all. The sausage in fried rice has a strong taste, it ruins every other flavor in the fried rice. If this is advertised as com chien duong chau, Id be ok with it. But if a seafood fried rice is ruined by chinese sausage.... this is clearly a poor combination of ingredients. read more

Banh khot - nice and crispy, shrimp is cooked well, and perfect amount of caviar. Banh cuon - loved these. Great flavor and texture and the fish cakes were delicious. The sauce was perfect. We had this chase credit giftcard so we decided to come try this place. The reviews are all rlly good so we felt quite confident. The service was great and the atmosphere was vibing. We both got the set menu since it was what they recommended. Most food tasted good, and tbh there was a lot of food. Some of the things I would like to point out are: some of the meat was really burnt , the oyster didn't seem fresh, and the beaf tartar was rlly weird tasting. My fav were the shrimp cake and the salad . Superb. Honestly we aren't in the city that much, but if we come back we will stay away from the set menu. One of the worst meals I've ever had. I guess we spoiled live in Houston Texas because we have the best of the best when it comes to Vietnamese food as we have one of the biggest viet communities in the United States. Food: the ribeye bahnh mi was terrible. The meat was extremely dry with no flavor. Also, the bread that came with the sandwich was completely hard and very tough to eat. We just got off the seven hour flight so we didn't have a choice but to eat it. I will give them props to beef broth with some of the best broth I've ever had in my life. The sandwich was not good at all, though. My girl got this dish with like cold chicken and yellow rice. It wasn't good at all. Her broth was good. I think we made the mistake of getting the dishes we've gotten. We would've been better off with pho as the broth here is phenomenal. If you want traditional Vietnamese food specifically, you will have a more enjoyable time elsewhere. Our group tried a variety of dishes: Chicken Pho, Beef Jerky Salad, Bo Kho, Crab Fried Rice, Banh Cuon, and Bun Cha. Bun Cha was the most authentic. Bo Kho meat was very tender and flavorful, but was prepared like a steak with mashed potato sides and fried onion topping. Crab fried rice had a divisive grainy texture. The quality of food wasn't bad, I just wasn't impressed with portion size and the taste wasn't outstanding enough for the price point. A plate with 2 raw oysters and 2 rice cakes on the side. The oysters had a tart and herbal flavor. The rice cakes were soft and moist, topped with uni and cilantro, with hints of dried shrimp. The uni had a mild, sweet taste. 2. Banh Khot caviar: Two shrimp cakes, lightly fried until crisp, topped with caviar, on a bed of butter lettuce. The caviar was briny but smooth. 3. Bo tai chanh: beef carpaccio, to be shared. It was bright and acidic, topped with marinated onions, fried onions, and a lime. 4. Kale avocado salad: kale, cherry tomato, avocado, sunflower seeds, and tangerines. The ingredients were fresh and high-quality, but nothing distinctive here. 5. Lemongrass clams, topped with thinly sliced pineapple, with a tart dipping sauce in the middle. Well-seasoned with balanced flavors and textures. 6. Bun cha: Sliced pork belly pieces, meatballs, and carrots in a sweet and savory sauce, with rice vermicelli and fresh lettuce and herbs on the side. Made reservation for 4 so we could take advantage of Chase Sapphire Reserve benefits that paid for more than half our meal. Lemon Grass Grilled Wings 4.5/5 Flavorful sauce, well balanced and the wings were juicy on the inside. It had a nice concentrated smokiness from the grilled marks. Great choice but wish there were more. Crab Fried Rice 3.5/5 This was good but it was too fishy the more you bite into it. It was too pungent and strong that it overwhelmed the dish. Was thinking it could be from the masago. Drinks 5/5 The cocktails are great and refreshing here. Our favorite was the Banh Bo Gimlet. Service 5/5 Staff are friendly and helpful. Also attentive to us as well. Ambience 5/5 Love the decoration and aesthetics of the restaurant. Coming back from Vietnam it feels like I somehow teleported back in an instant. Vietnamese dishes elevated and served in new ways. The Bun Rieu special was a standout - it was pretty much Bun Rieu in a pasta / dry form - got all the flavors on point and had me craving more. This is very difficult to review due to my Vietnamese bias. However, I think 4 stars is very fair, all because of one dish: Bun Cha Hanoi. Only a handful of places in all of CA make Bun Cha correctly because Northern Viet dishes (and people) aren't as common here in the US. This place is one of them. Their bun cha tastes JUST like what you can get in Hanoi. They manage to get the Smokey charcoal flavor into the Cha and the Nuoc mam sauce is on point! My parents wanted to celebrate Father's day in the city so I decided to take them here. It's "elevated" vietnamese food and the menu seemed enticing. I made reservations ahead of time for 6 people at 7:30 on Sunday 6/21. We arrived a little earlier than our reservation but were able to get seated right away. It's not in the best neighborhood but the the restaurant itself is gorgeous, decent amount of seating. We sat right by the door so I didn't see much of the back but they have a full bar. The bad: Service almost made me rate this spot 3 stars (more so 3.5) but I'd give it a try again and see. Our server was nice but definitely not tentative. There were no check ups, no water refills. We only saw her whenever she dropped off a dish. We wanted to order more & it took awhile as well. Also not sure if it's the restaurant's way of serving the items, but each dish came out so slow versus a whole spread or at least the entrees could've came out together. It was like we wouldn't get the next dish until we finish the previous entree which I'm not used to at vietnamese restaurants. The good: We order a good variety of food & drink. I will say that although it's meant to be "family style" the portions are pretty "small". I'd say its not shareable for a party of 6. You'd need to order 2 of everything or someone has to barely get a serving. We ordered banh beo which comes with uni. It unforunately only comes with 3 pcs so since we had 6 we ordered 2. I'd have skipped this tbh. It's a very unique take on banh beo but the batter for the banh beo was underwhelming. Too soft, not enough "chew" to it. It was 3 for $19 so pretty steep pricing as well. We also ordered Bun Cha, Bo Luc Lac, Crab fat fried rice, long green beans and Nom. Skip the Nom (vietnamese style papaya salad). My parents did not like this one at all. The dressing used was not the typical one they get. The Bun Cha was the best item. Super flavorful, the broth was sweet yet flavorful. However again, the portion was definitely too little to be "family" style, maybe a party of 2? We had to order extra noodles. Bo Luc Lac was cooked perfectly, juicy tender, good flavor. Crab fried rice was good too. We'd get those 3 items again. For drinks: Hi-Chew, Mango Calamansi Spritz (skip), Vietnamese coffee & Calamansi Sugar Cane. The drinks were decently priced at $6-8. Cocktail was $17 which was just okay to me. Lastly for the dessert: they ran out of crepe cake so we only got the mochi bar to try and this was the perfect ending. Would definitely get it again. I assume at night time it had a dark and moody feel but, in the daytime, it made the interior look quite tired. Onto the food, we ordered the very popular Bun Cha and Shaking Beef. The Bun Cha was good but the Shaking Beef was great! So tender and marinated to perfection. My one big complaint is that the portion sizes are about 3/4 of what I would typically expect. I came here with a party of 5 to celebrate a birthday and we're sat at the very front in a large, comfortable booth. FOOD: We ordered a bunch of items on their menu, from Bo Tai Chanh, Banh Cuon, Bun Cha to the Bo Luc Lac. Everything was rich in flavor with healthy portion sizes. The crowd favorite was definitely the Bun Cha, which was deep in spices and ultimately leaving everyone wanting another order or even something to take home for the next day. The atmosphere is classy - oak finishing, interesting artwork, and a mix of high and low-top tables. The service was good - quick and attentive. Now to the food... the broth of their pho ranks up there with the best I've had. It was rich and flavorful, and tasted freshly made. The only drawback was the amount of inedible parts of the chicken that hadn't been strained out of the broth. There were pieces of skin, gristle, and a few bones. Came by myself on a Wednesday at 2:00PM, and luckily there was no wait for a table. I heard that you should try to make a reservation if you try to come for dinner, but there were both bar and table options available at the time that I came. I ordered the bun cha and banh cuo to start with. They were both good, especially the bun cha. The charbroiled meat was tasty even, and the sauce was garlicky. What I didn't like about it is that the noodles were overcooked. As for the banh cuo, great dipping sauce and I liked the cooked bean sprouts they came in. I got the bodega beef pho as my entree and was a bit disappointed. I'm used to getting bean sprouts and maybe onions to add on, but neither were offered with the dish. I asked for sriracha and hoisin sauce only to be told that they don't have sriracha. I like my pho spicy! The broth was ok, it wasn't as rich as I had expected it to be, though it was oily. Good amount of meat pieces, some overcooked. They have a big tv and there was a soccer game going on. The waiters seemed to be more intrigued about the tv than the customers unfortunately. I found myself trying to have to get their attention as they didn't really check in with me. Overall, the bun cha was good despite its overcooked noodles. Would I come again? Probably not. read more

As someone who loves Vietnam and just got back from there, particularly Hanoi, this place surprised me in the best way!!! It's much more difficult to find places that serve northern Vietnamese food, or Hanoi classics. This place offered quite a few and all were delicious. We ordered the bun cha, nem cua, cha ca, banh cuon, and the crab fat fried rice. Everything was well presented and well made. No complaints! Service was friendly and accommodating as well. Interior is nice and clean. I would return! It is on the pricier side, but the quality makes it worth it. :) read more

SERVICE AND ATMOSPHERE: Service lacked friendliness and was sadly subpar at this caliber as the hostess and wait staff seemed a bit indifferent towards diners. Their indoor decor is appropriate and appealing. PARKING: Located in the Tenderloin, parking is a bit tough to find. IMPRESSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS: We came here for my sister's birthday and our party of 6 ordered almost half the menu as the portions are on the smaller side. The oysters with smoked trout roe were extremely small. While the banh knot caviar were tasty, the menu pricing is per one piece. The Tom Rim tiger prawns, canh chua Chilean seabass, bo tai chanh, bo luc lac were made well, but the pho ap chao lacked the expected crispiness and the crab fat fried rice lacked depth. We didn't have a great experience, however, our server/the bartender handled the situation well and it wasn't his fault. We sat at the bar, but the entire restaurant looked spacious and well designed. We ordered a banh mi and bo ne. We do not eat pork and requested to remove pate, however, the kitchen insisted it was chicken. At the end of the meal, our server delivered the news. We're sad that this could have been avoided if we had stuck to our gut, but we get that things happen and there was a miscommunication. They comped our meal and our server was very apologetic even though it was not his fault. We hope he isn't too hard on himself, but we hope the kitchen staff and whomever was helping that day relearns the menu and can be aware of allergies and religious preferences for future guests. read more

I thoroughly enjoyed each dish, and everything was presented beautifully with tasty and strong flavor garnishes. My favorite was the Bun Cha, with its perfectly seasoned and expertly grilled meats, rich in umami flavor. The Bo Tai Chanh was also a pleasant surprise. Came here on a Saturday for lunch and didn't have a reservation so sat at the bar. Ordered the banh cuon, bun cha, kace fruit tea - apple jasmine flavor, and pho Hanoi. The dishes were pretty good, the pho Hanoi was unique in that it came with Chinese donuts. Dishes were flavorful and I've never heard of kace fruit tea, but it is a very refreshing and not too sweet canned drink. The service was okay, a bit slow. We were really disappointed because we were too full and decided to take the banh cuon to go as we thought we don't need a microwave for this item and it would be easier to take back to the hotel. They helped us pack our food which we had a whole order of and barely touched because we were too full and unfortunately, they did not include the fish sauce when they packed it for us, which is very much needed for the rice rolls. Without it, there is no flavor so we were really sad that when we got back to the hotel and decided to finish it, that there was no sauce included and we were not able to finish it and wasted our money :( read more

Arrived at 530 for an early dinner with 2 young children. Restaurant is about 25% filled, all booths empty. We were sat at the table closest to the kitchen (worst table there IMO). Was able to queue before opening to snag a seat at the bar. Lots of people waiting for a bar seat it was a good idea to come early! We came for lunch and ordered a good amount of the menu. All the food was very clean tasting, light in flavor and felt healthy Our favorites had to be the lemongrass chicken wings as well at the pork chops. All the pho comes with wide flat rice noodles for a more homey soothing bite. We tried both the pho Hanoi and the pho ga, of the two the beef felt a little more hefty.
