Got dinner with my friend here yesterday. Was trying to do an open table reservation but didn't book the time I want in time. Luckily I came by 15 minutes after they open and got some bar seats. The menu was fun with a lot of unique take on Vietnamese street food classic. Got my sugar cane with calamansi juice. It was good and my friend got the mango spritzer. Had to try the uni bánh bèo. Its a trio. The uni work pretty well with the fish sauce though it was literally gone in seconds. Excited for Bún chả. Now I recently had BCHN last week as a delivery from a local restaurant near me so it's hard not to compare. The sauce and the meat was good. But feel like some of the herbs and veggies could be more , like I want to drown in herbs. The proportion of noodle to veggies to meat ratio is kinda not balance like they could do with more veggies and noodle and less meat The eggplant with tofu is ok it wasn't a favorite of mine. Squab was also decent but didn't wow me but the onion bits that came with it was interesting I did use the lemon salt dipping sauce with the squab too. Best thing of the night was the dessert. I came here a few years ago and had the tasting menu. This time, it was a casual family-style dinner with friends. The atmosphere is pretty cool with lots of warm woods and a bar in the center; we were seated at a hightop table, but there are multiple options. It's nice inside and the servers were quite attentive, too. I appreciated the upscale Vietnamese flavors and presentation, but note that it's not a great menu for vegans. Here's what we got... Banh Cuon: These are fresh rice rolls. I think folks were expecting something more like a spring roll, but I liked the tenderness of the outer roll and the contrast with the ground pork and wood ear mushroom textures. Nem Cua: Pretty good with rice noodles on the side. Crisp and flavorful with the fragrant greens. Crab Fried Rice: This was a pleasant surprise! We had a lunch date at Bodega and it was underwhelming. The service was spotty. The employees were confused with orders being dishes that weren't even ours to our table. Host was too preoccupied and so the bartender had to take over. It was like 10 min before we got seated eventhough we had reservations. The food was ok, but I've probably had better Vietnamese food in San Jose. Shaking beef was the most standout dish with tender beef. But there were only a few pieces of it. A lot more rice and onions, than actual meat. Potatoes were delicious in the dish. Vietnamese salad was refreshing with lots of chicken. Pho Hanoi was ok, but I've had way better in SJ. We used to like this place a lot and have been many times, but seems like they are doing budget cuts as the value is way less there, especially for the chef's tasting menu. the food is still solid, but the 90 dollar pp tasting menu is not advised as we added up the total value they served us and it was below 90 pp. They cut out a whole 3 dishes vs the last time we were here over a year ago. Everything is also on the menu. When we brought this up to the servers, they gave a lot of weird explanations and then eventually added another dessert to make the value. I was excited to try this spot, it's been on my list a while! The space had modern, neat decor. I liked the lighting, it's a large space, various size tables. The server ran through specials and menu highlights which was helpful. We started with the Lady Xian and the Cucumber salad cocktails. Lady Xian had Song Cai Gin, Mot-Hai-Bo-YO! Lychee, Dragon Fruit which was boozy, fruity, delicious. We ordered a variety of apps and entrees to share. Though we ordered a couple of dishes for two people, the server suggested we order more. This was over the period of an hour. We started off Blue Fin tuna tartare. It was very light, simple. The fish was fresh. I thought it was very basic. We also got the Banh Cuon: Fresh Rice Rolls, Ground Pork, Wood Ear Mushroom, Crispy Shallots, Nuoc Nam. The rolls were very flavorful, the fresh veg on the side complemented the pork really well, especially with a touch of the nuoc nam fish sauce. The next course was my favorite of the night, Bun Cha: Heritage Pork Belly, Meatballs, Pickled Carrots, & Kohlrabi. The pork belly was absolutely delicious, the marinade was incredible. The noodles with the pork belly mixed with cilantro and veg was fresh, flavorful. I loved it! Our last course was the Crab fat fried rice: Bay Scallops, Squid, Lap Cheong, Masago, Sakura Shrimp, Pickled Long Beans. The fried rice was very good, buttery, the seafood was very fresh. I really enjoyed eating at Bodega! I came here with friends for a weekend lunch and was very pleasantly surprised by how good everything was. The shaking beef was the star and was flavorful and the perfect texture. We also all enjoyed the iced coffee, pho, and salad, too. Bodega is highly rated and modern Vietnamese cuisine that is tucked away in an unassuming spot, it would be easy to walk right passed the restaurant if not looking carefully. Not flashy at all from the outside but once inside, it's a very clean, contemporary restaurant with the wood paneling, the high tables, bar area, as well as some regular tables sprinkled throughout. The staff are very busy but friendly. A steady stream of diners come in, but on this Sunday afternoon there was no wait for a table. They have a nice variety of Vietnamese dishes. Overall, the food is flavorful, the ingredients are high quality, and the ambiance is stylish and inviting. That said, there were a few hiccups that held this place back from being truly great. Once those are ironed out, this could easily be a 5/5. Based on my most recent visit, I would give it around a 3.5, and I am rounding down slightly given the hiccups. If this were a casual hole in the wall, none of these issues would matter nearly as much, but with an upscale tier comes higher expectations. the appetizers are the star of the show. The banh cuon and nem cua were all full 5/5. Beautiful presentation, incredibly fresh herbs, perfectly chewy noodles, super flavorful meats, and deeply savory sauces that honestly transported me back to my trip to Hanoi a few years ago. Everything about them felt thoughtful and well executed. The dry pho landed arround a 3.5/5, not bad at all and the ingredients are high quality with real pieces of shrimp. Mixing all the colors and textures together with the savory soy based sauce was fun and satisfying even if it did not quite reach the same heights as the appetizers. Hiccups: We had an issue with bun cha where inside of one of the meatballs was clearly uncooked, the meat was pink/red and was very obviously raw, When we showed our waiter, even he looked shocked and immediately acknowledged that it was raw. However they replaced only the single meatball instead of the entire dish, which felt strange. we ended up not touching the rest of the dish because it was hard to trust that any of it would be properly cooked, honestly this would have been a non-issue had they replaced the entire dish. The other disappointing dish was the shaking beef. while the beef cut was def high quality, something went very wrong in the marinade. It tasted like it had been tenderized with too much baking soda or left for too long, causing the beef to completely lose its texture. Instead of having any chew, it was overly soft and crumbly, to the point where it felt like i was eating a piece of potato, instead of beef. For a dish that usually shines because of texture, this was really sad. We barely touched it after one bite, and I noticed nearby tables also leaving most of theirs untouched. Maybe it was an off day, but this is def an area they could easily improve upon. The service was okay, I understand it was busy and not having our servers attention 100% of the time is fine. Still our waters were constantly left unfilled and we had to ask him several times for refills or to bring us some sauce. at the end of the day, none of these hiccups were deal breakers, they merely explain why this particular visit fell short for me - I will be back again as i think they have a lot of potential, and will update my review if they improve read more

Fantastic spot with great flavorful dishes. I went here for a date, and was grateful I made a reservation. Doors opened at 11am, and at least one group which had lined outside the door was turned away immediately (staff mentioned they were out of tables and cited an estimated wait time). Interior is warm and intimate with a mix of seating options and ambiance was superb for a date setting. Service was professional and prompt. We got a shaking beef and a bun cha to share. I wasn't sure how the bun cha would look like from the menu description, but it was a fun dish. Meat and veggies in a sweet and sour soup which was very flavorful with side herbs and lettuce to add. The broth was probably our favorite thing in the restaurant we tried as it was really delicious. The shaking beef was hearty and hot, and made for a nice comfort food with some recently cold weather in SF. I got the Indochina Margarita as a drink. I just visited Bodega SF - a Northern Vietnamese specialized restaurant near Union Square SF today, and immediately became a fan. The flavors feel super authentic. I ordered Hanoi bun cha, didn't expect much because other places in the Bay disappointed me so much I lost hope. But this one didn't. It really taste like home. The meatballs were juicy inside, probably mixed with pork and fat, and grilled pork belly was very tender and well-seasoned. And mam sauce was the best, it was still warm and hit just right, exactly like what I had back in Hanoi. As a Hanoian, it's so hard to find good Northern Viet food in the States, but this place nailed it. I think I'm gonna be a regular now lol. Their menu in general is kinda pricey, for example I paid $30 for this bun cha, and cha ca (grilled fish) will cost like $42. But I don't mind much, because nowhere else can you find this flavor! Made a reservation through open table for Monday night dinner time. Although it was super busy we were quickly sat as soon as we arrived! We started off the meal with the oysters and banh khot caviar and both were extremely impressive flavor profiles. The oysters were the best blend of spicy, tangy and refreshing. For the banh khot the caviar serving was smaller than expected, but that did not negate the incredible taste. For our mains we had the bun cha, crab fried rice and tiger prawns. The bun cha was salty yet sweet and reminded me of the dishes I had in Hanoi. The crab fried rice was good, but slightly salty. We started our meal with the Bánh Khọt Caviar ($16 for one piece) yes, it's a splurge, but it was the perfect, luxurious bite to kick off the meal. The Bò Tái Chanh, a Vietnamese beef carpaccio, was outstanding. The flavors melded beautifully, the sweet onions, crispy shallots, and bright citrus dressing came together perfectly. Next came the Bánh Cuốn, fresh rice rolls filled with ground pork and mushrooms, comforting, delicate, and full of flavor. The Mango OT was good but had a strong Thai chili flavor, almost like the Mango tamarind candy lollipop. The Sweet and Soursop is an acquired taste, I liked it but some of my friends did not enjoy the aftertaste. I would describe the aftertaste as similar to a Longan fruit shell, which I didn't mind. The Bodega Old Fashioned was nice and strong. FOOD: We ordered Banh Cuon (Rice rolls), Chinese Long Beans, and Bo Luc Lac (Shaken Beef). The Banh Cuon was served authentically which I enjoyed. I have been meaning to try Bodega out for years and finally decided to take my mom here when she was visiting. We did walk in on a Tuesday night and it was very busy - we waited about 30 minutes for a table although there was earlier seating available at the bar. Ordered a couple different dishes to try and the waiter was very helpful in giving his input on what would go well together and whether the amount of food would be too much/little. The bo luc lac was our favorite by far - so tender and the beef chunks literally melted in your mouth. I do wish there was more beef as a bulk of the dish was potatoes and pearl onions. Nem cua was okay, nothing to note. I would probably pass on this next time. Papaya salad is a must get for me whenever I see it on a menu and this one was good, not great. I thought it was slightly lackluster in that it was made up of just pure papaya shred with a few tiny pieces of jerky on top. Drinks looked fun and delicious. Would definitely want to try those along with other dishes next time. read more

Solid upscale Vietnamese food in the middle of SF's Tenderloin. The Bun Cha was our favorite dish. The pork was cooked and spiced perfectly. Wrap it in some lettuce and the flavors will melt in your mouth. The beef tenderloin was pretty solid though I've had better. The Chilean sea bass was just average. It was well prepared, but it lacked any kind of real distinctivness. Service was solid and the ambiance was comforable, though it felt just a tad basic given the loftier prices on the menu. read more

What's going on with Bodega SF? Did they change the chefs? Or did they literally swap out a new operation team? This store is used to be my go-to-store for Pho Ha Noi and bun cha and dry hu tieu: to the point that there're times in my life that I had to order take-outs from them once or twice per week. I cannot even remember how many times I recommended this restaurant to my "non-asian" friends. Now the food quality is so bad. They messed up the order so badly- I paid 5$ more for extra fillet meat for my Pho and showing up at my front door was the Pho without even garnishes: onions, celeries etc. And yes, the 5$ extra fillet was missing for sure but that was not the worst part: the flavor was completely different - it tasted so bad: sour and weird that I found myself finally giving up on them and didn't even bother to claim refund for missing items from Uber Eat. Even their Banh cuon was terrible. Where were few slices of pork patty that it used to be accompanied with? That's not what you should cut costs. I will not order from this store any more, unless it could bring back the OG flavors it used to have at the beginning. read more

Keep in mind that the menu you see online is not what you see in the restaurant. Depending on time and day, the menu changes and could be a subset of what you see online. If you're expecting a typical Vietnamese restaurant, then you should not be coming here expecting that. they serve a more fusion style Vietnamese cuisine. Host was pleasant and nice. Server seems to hate the job and not wants to be there. We got the lemon grass chicken I give this 3/10. I highly suggest to pass on this one. The Bo luc lac "shaken beef", it is not your typical Vietnamese dish. The rice portion was more than the meat and potatoe itself. We literally got 5 piece of beef and like 13 piece of potato. It was like a 80/20 ratio. Maybe also due to that the meat was smaller cube size and the potato was cut a bit chunkier. They try to fill you up with the starch and make the plate seem more than what it is. If you get a regular shaken beef dish at other places, it's usually a lot of beef and bell peppers and even a nice salad to accommodate it. The beef tastes good for the 5 pieces they gave. But I rather would get the same meal for $22 at another spot and that itself will fill me up versus getting this for $26. Not worth it. The flavor of the dish was on point just not the portion and pricing on it. I don't think is fair. 6.5/10 Beef pho was really terrible. I never tasted pho like that ever before. Soup doesn't even taste like it's been cooking for hours with aromatics or even beef bones or onions and ginger. Taste like it came from a seasoning bag from a pho in a bag from the store and they strained it to get the impurities out and it taste like flavor Starnaise water. Or possibly made a couple hours from us receiving it. Again this is my personal opinion. 3/10 read more

First time trying the pho from Bodega, which we had delivered to the office. I typically don't order pho to go, but the packaging was organized with three parts - the bowl with noodles and meat, a wrapped bundle of bean sprouts and basil, and the broth. There was almost more broth than could fit in the bowl, but the broth itself was savory and managed to be both clean and rich at the same time. In my opinion, the broth is the most important part of pho, and Bodega did well the nuanced flavors of the spices and herbs that went into it. It would have been ideal to have more basil - my order had only about 3 sprigs of it. The meat was also cut in large pieces which made it hard to assemble the perfect bite with noodles, vegetables, meat, and broth. I'm also used to having tendon and meatballs in my pho (as part of a traditional pho dac biet) which Bodega's version didn't have. Overall, the pho was quite good and hit the spot. While this is a 3/5, this is based on my takeout experience and not a dine-in (though I've been to the actual restaurant once on a separate occasion for dinner and gave that a 4/5). As someone who has had authentic pho, I'm not sure I would recommend this to others who are used to traditional Vietnamese food, but this is a good entry-level version of pho for anyone new to it. read more

My friend visiting from LA and I met here for a spontaneous dinner meetup. I arrived first and was informed of a 45-minute wait-time. Since we wanted Vietnamese food, we grabbed drinks at another venue nearby while waiting. When we finally got seated, I scanned the menu and noticed it appeared quite small compared to what I remembered from a year ago when I ordered takeout. They used to have a standout pho (menu item Pho Hanoi), and I was excited for my friend to try, but it was missing from the menu, along with all the other soup and non-vermicelli noodle dishes from before. When I inquired about the pho, I was informed by staff that it's only available at lunch or from the pre fixe tasting menu. Although disappointed, my friend and I still decided upon a couple of plates to share. They were quite delicious, and we liked both, but I really wish they'd bring the pho back as a regular dinner menu item. read more
