So I came around the corner, found a parking spot and was headed to "b. patisserie" but unfortunately they're closed on Monday. I should've known that. "My father's kitchen" caught my eye because it was right next to my high priced parking meter. I also had in my mind that it was a vegetarian meat market type place. I thought it was like the offshoot of a place in Berkeley called the "Butcher's Son", but actually that was in Los Angeles. So, I stuck my head in there since I paid for my meter. It was a nice clean, organized, inviting spot with cool ambience and attractive photographs on the wall, etc.. I wasn't in the mood for a full meal, but the menu looked intriguing. I opted for a "pour over" coffee because I didn't want to not make a purchase once I made my presence known. Much to my surprise, it was quite delightful and worth the trip. The only reason why this restaurant deserves 3 stars is the vermicelli egg roll dish which is incredible. However, this does not take away from the underwhelming service, overpriced food, and lack of flavor in their other entrees. First of all, $13 for two spring rolls is CRIMINAL. Even for San Francisco pricing. I usually order these, however they raised the prices for some reason on just these spring rolls. This doesn't fill you up whatsoever. Recently, the ingredients have not been too fresh. Will not be ordering this again. Second, the lady at the front was incredibly rude. It's loud in the restaurant and I told her my name. My favorite comfort food is soup. I enjoy a good soup and I one of my favorite soup during soup season is Pho Ga. There are lots of great places to grab a bowl of Pho Ga. I have been to many places to grab Pho but I have been late to the party when comes to this spot in the Lower Pacific Heights on Divisadero in San Francisco. The place serves Vietnamese cuisine and comfort food and it's called My Father's Kitchen. I passed by this place lots of times during the day but it was the right time to go inside and try their food. I ordered the Pho Ga. I enjoyed the broth which was savory and flavorful. The cuts of chicken were generous. They served the thicker noodles. Although I prefer the thinner noodles the thicker noodles were fresh and slurpable. Over all it's a good place to grab some comfort Vietnamese food when in Lower Pacific Heights in San Francisco. Well I guess I'm not a PHO person. I found this incredibly bland. I mean bland. I added vinegar, fish sauce followed Katsu and nope like weak tea? Friendly staff but the food was lacking freshness and flavor. I really wanted to like this place. It's pretty and super clean and the menu was simple, not over doing it with the trifold of dishes. My Father's Kitchen is very inviting. But it was over priced and just ok. The soup had a beautiful rich beef broth but no fresh herbs or sprouts to go with it. And although it's a nice soup, there was no pho flavoring to the broth. (no fish sauce,onion, ginger, star anise, and cinnamon stick to flavor broth) The papaya salad was good but again needed heat and a little acid. It was ok. Fried spring rolls are good but 3 for $12.50? Over $4 per roll? The fresh spring roll are good but the dipping sauce was whipped peanut butter. I couldn't eat it. I thought adding fish sauce and sriracha to it would help, but it didn't t. It needed hoisin. The Grilled Mary's 5 Spice Chicken plate ($14.50) had flavor but it was 2 thin pieces of skinless chicken thighs over a mound of rice. It didn't look or taste freshly grilled. That bummed me out. I was hoping for plump marinated grilled chicken with yummy charred edges. I guess for the location it works. My suggestion, fix the peanut sauce, add another fried egg roll, and grill the chicken to order and toss in some cool garnishes like cucumbers and soup toppings. read more

I love pho noodle soup, and I've had it at a number of Vietnamese restaurants throughout the city. I think My Father's Kitchen offers up some of the best. It's tasty and hearty, with lots of meat. Not sure why people like this place. I love eating pho and Vietnamese food but this is by far one of the worst Vietnamese restaurants I have ever tried especially in the city. Guess they are surviving because of their location in between UCSF Mount Zion and Kaiser. The first time I came here was just for an iced Vietnamese coffee. I used my 15min work break literally coming from across the street to get coffee. My drink took my entire break. When I came here for lunch during my work break, I was seated right away in the communal table between strangers. I ordered a small pho ga right away. My food did not come out for some time at least 18mins for pho ga. I saw everyone else around me including those who came after me get their soup noodles before I got mine. Even the guy sitting across from me said my order was taking unusually long and that I should check on it. The guy ordered his pho a few minutes before me and got his within minutes. I asked one of the workers after waiting over 15mins. The cashier girl saw me staring into the kitchen and asked a worker to help me. The lady with the short hair came up and asked what I needed. I said I wanted to check on my order. Then she looked and said just wait, it is boiling. We need to boil the soup first! Then she goes back to the kitchen and I could hear her say, "just checking order" in a frustrated tone. The stranger sitting across me exchanged eye contact with me because we were both shocked at the terrible service. Honestly, Vietnamese places are usually very quick but because of their slow service, I almost ran out of time to eat even though my break was 45mins. My chicken noodle soup was also very salty! It was like drinking salt water with some chicken and onion pieces. What a disappointment! Prices were on the higher side for what they offered. This place eventually got packed. I tried this place awhile back and disliked it so much I didn't even want to waste my time writing a review for it. I absolutely love Pho and love trying different pho restaurants even more! I saw the negative reviews on this restaurant but decided to try it anyway, unfortunately they were all very accurate. I had a rare steak pho and the broth just tasted like hot water with minimal spices and flavoring. This pho is northern style which means it's a simpler pho then most restaurants that have souther style pho. However, I just don't think this restaurant made it very well. I actually didn't end up finishing my bowl, I walked down the street and decided to get the lunch special at dumpling dynasty to make up for the bad lunch. I'm so sorry. I've been here on multiple occasions already and have tried something different each time. #2 Spring Rolls: so fresh and has both shrimp and pork. Served with a peanut sauce. I actually like a strong peanut sauce personally and theirs had more of a coconut flavor to it and the lighter orange color reflected that. It's a different take on the peanut sauce and it was good, but I just prefer the strong peanut/hoisin flavor. #7 Steak and Brisket Pho: cannot go wrong with this! And they use a bit of a thicker vermicelli noodle. Their broth was rich and sooo good on a rainy day. I drank the whole bowl, which is not something I normally do. Good thing I ordered a small for lunch LOL. I had fish sauce, lemon and salt for my sauce on the side and the citrus really tied it all together. #11 Grilled Pork and Meatballs: served with vermicelli, greens and fish sauce. I have been looking for a spot that served this in the city since Loi's on Irving closed some time ago. And mannn, this did not disappoint. And it was a pleasant surprise to see it on their menu. Love love their pho! Their broth is so delicious and flavorful! I like that they have chicken pho and beef pho but also a combination one with both chicken and beef! You can also customize your pho by asking them to take out whatever it is that you don't want. I think it's a different style pho than what some people are used to. They make authentic northern style pho (which I personally enjoy more because it's on the savory side) vs the southern style pho with all the bean sprouts and all the other toppings/sauce to dress it up (I find it too sweet sometimes). After turtle tower restaurant closed down their 2 locations in the city, it's been hard to find a place that specializes in northern pho. Broth is clean and they give you a decent amount of protein in the bowl. Lovely atmosphere and flavorful food. I popped in to use restroom and was going to get something to go but the tantalizing aroma stopped me. I got a great window seat and this is definitely a place to people watch. The young lady working door greeted me with a smile and promptly took my order. She recommended the Mary's Chicken Satay. I was only one in restaurant initially so my food came quickly. The dining room has cool street pictures from Vietnam and other homey decor that makes me feel like I'm in my Nana's sitting room visiting and waiting for me to serve me comfort food. I really enjoyed the dish--really flavorful white meat and fresh herbs with lettuce. The peanut sauce had a lush depth to it and didn't feel like peanut butter but like a nutty peanut aioli. The white rice was a large portion which I really appreciated. I'm only giving it four stars cause I had the one dish. I have been coming to My Father's Kitchen on Divisadero for quite some time, usually during my lunch breaks. I love their soup, and until recently I had never had an issue with either the food or the service. The restaurant is often very busy during lunchtime, especially with employees from the nearby hospitals and medical centers. Because seating is limited, it is common for people to share tables. On the day of my visit, I had just finished a long and exhausting case at the hospital where I work as a registered nurse. After being on my feet for nearly five hours without a break, I was looking forward to finally sitting down and having lunch. When I arrived, I noticed an open seat at a table where a young woman was sitting. I politely asked if I could share the table, and she smiled and said yes. As I was about to sit down, a staff member behind the counter loudly called out, "Excuse me," and then asked, in front of a crowded restaurant, "Did you ask if you could sit there?" While I understand the importance of respecting other customers' space, I had already asked for permission. What bothered me most was not the question itself, but the tone and the fact that it was announced loudly in front of everyone. I felt embarrassed, singled out, and spoken to in a condescending manner. After an already physically and emotionally draining day at work, that interaction completely took away my appetite. I ended up leaving without ordering anything. It was disappointing because I have always enjoyed coming here and have never had a negative experience before. I hope management takes this feedback as constructive criticism. The food is wonderful, and this has been one of my favorite lunch spots. However, a little kindness and discretion in how customers are addressed can make a significant difference, especially for those of us coming in after a long and demanding day. Unfortunately, this experience has changed my perception of the restaurant. As someone who has recommended this place to coworkers in the past, I will be sharing my experience with them as well. Went here for lunch and it was busy. But since I was by myself, I got seated right away sharing a table with someone else which I didn't mind. I ordered the #4 which is the Chicken Rice noodle soup special that comes with free range chicken and rare steak. The pho came out fast and I wished I had ordered the large. The regular was a bit small but will definitely order up next time. Since the service was so quick, I was in and out within 15 mins. The pho is decent and I'm glad this is close to work. 5 star service- huge thank you to the wonderful staff who made it possible for me to order a chicken pho here AND still catch my hospital shuttle back to Parnassus in time. The food, which I wished I had time to eat in shop, smelled and looked delicious. The large is $1 more than the regular, which is $13.95 and made with flat rice noodles. I was so hungry after my OR cases but had to pack it all up to get back to the main hospital, so I didnt get to try it hot off the stove but they did bring it to me like a mere 2 minutes after I ordered so I was impressed and drooling to taste it. The few licks I got tasted sublime. Sure, the pho here isn't as heavy handed as other places, but it is also less greasy so up to you to decide what you prioritize if you choose to eat here! I visited My Father's Kitchen for lunch. Everything started off fine until my food was brought out. While eating, I discovered a piece of hair in my meal. I immediately informed the server and asked for a replacement. I personally feel like they should have replaced my meal for free due to me almost EATING HAIR, but the owner turned red and got upset because I wouldn't pay for the replacement meal. She ended up saying we can have everything for free very rudely even when my friend offered to pay for the meal she had. I told the owner I'd leave this Yelp review and she said "Go ahead, I'm not scared of you" ... like girl what?? Very unprofessional. we stopped by today after a doctors appointment at Mount Zion. What a delightful, beautiful experience the staff was helpful and charming and the food was unbelievably delicious. My wife had a pork and beef meatball dish and I had sautéed chicken and it was fantastic. We also had imperial rules that were crispy and really unique with mint leaves and a lovely dipping sauce, the price was fabulous and one of the young women even gave me some extra peanut sauce to take home.
