    Combination banh mi and coffee
    Shelley T.

Phi Long is a decent option for banh mi in the Richmond. My first visit was around when they first opened and initially, I was not super impressed. However on my recent visit, it seems like the sandwiches have gotten a little bigger and tastes pretty good. The combination banh mi has 3 types of thinly sliced meat and pate. The bread tastes fresh and I appreciate that the meat is thinly sliced. Overall, it's pretty solid but I think the pate is a tad bit salty, and there could be more pickled vegetables to balance it out. The coffee is super bitter for me and is made with condensed milk and milk. The meal combi is now $11.99 for a sandwich and drink. When they first opened, the deal was $10.88 but the sandwich was smaller and now the sandwich is a better size. I would rather pay a little more for a bigger sandwich. Laat time I got a milk tea that might've been jasmine, and thought it was a little too sweet. Not sure if that has changed since.

I'm still standing by my old 5* review but for the sake of visibility, I will give a low review for this one - as the prices are pretty affordable given the area and it's a small family owned business. Great to see they're expanding their menu here and there. I just want the owners to see this review. Only reason I'm writing my review is in hope the workers or owner here sees it. I dropped by to order some lunch and right before I ordered, one of the workers handed money change to the customer in front of me with the gloves she used to make the customer's spring rolls in. After touching money, she used the same pair of gloves to cut the bread for my bahn mi. I try not to make it a big deal but it's kind of disgusting. Makes me wonder what else the gloves were used for prior to me and the other customer. Food should not be handled after touching money!

Egg rolls, beef sandwich and vietnamese ice coffee
    Kim T.

The sandwich was delicious. They give you a good amount of meat. Egg rolls are decent but need to put more cabbage. The vietnamese coffee is strong and has good flavor. If you're in neighborhood, give them a try. The 2 ladies who work there are very sweet.

Delicious banh mi sandwich from this small takeout shop. We ordered 3 for takeout and arrived late to pick it up. The sweet owner offered to heat it up. We declined as the sandwiches were still warm. I ordered beef and hubby ordered pork. Sandwiches were sizable and had lots of meat with veggies on french loaves. It hit the spot! Sweet owner also gave us water when we chose to eat in at the solo table available. Next time I plan to order the sandwich with a drink as it's just 3 dollars more.

Their sandwiches instantly bring me back to the old-school Vietnamese coffee joints in the Tenderloin from back in the day (IYKYK). Those spots have all disappeared with the last one being sing sing, so stumbling upon Phi Long feels like finding a hidden gem. I've been coming back every other morning since! The bread-to-filling ratio is perrrrfect -- not oversized, not overstuffed, just authentic and balanced with the right combination of vietnamese ham's. (I get it with extra mayo and ooooOooF) And the biggest surprise? EVER since coming back from Hà Nội, I've been searching all over SF for a proper salted coffee. Couldn't find it anywhere--until here. I was a bit hesitant when ordering but to my surprise it was soooo goooood. They make it strong, bold, and so, so good. OBSESSED

Bánh Tét: Sticky Rice Cake w/ pork belly + mung beans - Sliced and pan-fried

My toxic trait is going for lunch #2 when lunch #1 is terrible. This was a blessing in disguise because I would have slept on Phi Long Sandwich. This little neighborhood gem is like a slice of E San Jo in the city. Opening in April 2024, they have specials like Canh Khổ Qua (bitter melon soup), Bánh Tét (sticky rice cake w/ pork belly + mung beans) and Chân Gà Sốt Thái (chicken feet w/ thai sauce) that you won't even find in the TL. It's mainly a takeout only spot as there's only one table for dine-in. M E N U A variety of Bánh Mì ($8.50 - $8.99). Make it a combo with a drink for $10.99. This includes boba milk tea and cà phê sữa đá (Viet iced coffee) - a great deal! They also have specials which I mentioned along with Bò Kho (Viet beef stew), Phở Ga (Chicken Soup), Com Sườn Nướng (Grilled Pork Chop Rice) and more. Some items are packed as takeout in the fridge and have to be warmed up. I'm not sure if they have the same specials all the time so highly recommend calling ahead. Cc's accepted. F O O D * #1 Bánh Mì Dặc Biệt w/ chả (fancy pork), giò thủ (headcheese), pâté, mayo, veggies | $8.50: https://tinyurl.com/36w7v2cu - Request extra pâté IMO, this rivals the ones in TL and E SJ - light, crackly soft baguette generously filled with rich pâté, layers of smooth fancy pork and gelatinous headcheese, and veggies (pickled + fresh cucumber + jalapeño). Flavorful and deliciously satisfying. It would be 5 stars if they put more pickled veggies to cut through the savory richness *and* if they used Viet yolk-rich mayo or butter cut mayo (they use American mayo). * Bánh Tét: Sticky Rice Cake w/ pork belly + mung beans | $15: https://tinyurl.com/4r5bcmvr - Special for Tết, Lunar New Year The Viet cousin of Chinese zongzi/joong, the sticky rice cake is filled with mung beans and pork belly. This rendition was tasty but wasn't rolled tight enough so it unraveled while cutting into. Also, it could use a bigger/thicker cut of pork belly for a better protein-to-rice ratio (pork belly was the width of a dime). I like slicing and pan-frying it until the exterior is golden brown and crunchy. I did find a strand of hair when unwrapping the roll (I tripled check to make sure it wasn't from the banana leaf) but it was probably a one off. S E R V I C E Friendly. A M B I A N C E Bare bones with one table for seating. P A R K I N G Easily found metered parking in front during weekday lunchtime. Overall, Phi Long is an under the radar gem in Inner Richmond. Would def return for their bánh mì and chân gà sốt thái (when they have it).

I've had my fair share of banh mis growing up. My favorite used to be the chicken banh mi from Cam Huong all the way in Oakland Chinatown before they changed ownership (RIP.) I've been on the hunt for a replacement sandwich since then. Like many others have posted about, the giant sign outside the shop, displaying a sandwich + drink combo meal for $11.99, was the first thing I saw and was what drew me in. I ordered a chicken banh mi and a boba with high hopes that I'd finally have a contender, but I was disappointed. The French bread on the banh mi was rubbery and didn't have that satisfying crunch to it. The chicken tasted kind of old, too. I'm not sure if it's because I went in the afternoon, but their ingredients didn't taste very fresh at that time of the day? The boba was also mediocre at best; it was a little too sweet for my liking. I wouldn't be paying $4.99 for it outside of this combo meal for sure. The lady behind the counter took my order AND prepared it, so props to her for being a one woman show! I also see that this shop is listed on DoorDash, too, so it's extra impressive that she's able to keep up with online and in-person orders all by herself. All in all, I don't think I'll be back to try this place again. Looks like I'll still be on the hunt for a good chicken banh mi in the Bay Area!

Great service and authentic Vietnamese food. The lady behind the counter is a multi-tasker and can do it all. Sandwiches are decent. Coffee can be made extra strong, like gasoline oil strong. I would love to come back to try the other menu items.

Nice, no frills vietnamese sandwich shop. I got the combo sandwich and chicken sandwich. The baguette didn't scratch the roof of your mouth like other places. The lady behind the counter was very polite and very quick for someone making the sandwiches and manning the counter. Cash always preferred, but I paid for credit card.

This family-owned spot offers just one table for in house seating, perfect for to go orders. Pretty self explanatory, you walk up to view the menu to order. Service is standard, it's not slow. I appreciate their Special Combo, which includes a sandwich and drink for $11.99, such a great deal! I went with my usual order: a combination sandwich and Vietnamese iced coffee. The food overall is solid, the bread is perfectly toasted. PRO TIP: eat the sandwich upside down to avoid scratching the roof of your mouth, thank me later. Though I wish the egg mayo had more of a classic vietnamese eggy flavor rather than tasting like American mayo. Their pate have really nice balance and doesn't taste too "livery" lol. I love that the jalapeños pack a real spicy punch! The Vietnamese iced coffee is on the stronger side due to less condensed milk, which works perfectly for me.

Let me just start this review by stating the this is one woman team and she's super sweet and very informative. $10.99 for a Banh mi and drink is an unbeatable deal indeed. Meatball sandwich- (3/5) the bread was soft and fluffy and held everything together really well. The meat to bread ratio was below standard and was a bit disappointing, but for $7.99 a Banh mi, can't really complain. The meatball itself was a bit on the saltier side but I really enjoyed the pickled vegetables. Beef Banh mi- (3/5) the beef was a bit dry but it wasn't too bad. Nothing really stood out for me flavor wise. Matcha milk tea- (2/5) the matcha flavor was too subtle for my liking. I'm giving this place an overall 3.2 stars.

Recently opened in Inner Richmond, next door to Noodle in a Haystack ($$$) and Wooden Charcoal Korean Village Barbecue House ($$), this Vietnamese sandwich shop may have found a niche for the more frugal breakfast/lunch crowd. Formerly occupied by a Russian deli, now this is a Vietnamese sandwich shop offering a limited menu of Banh mi to-go with very reasonable prices. All the sandwiches start at $7.99. And if you get it as a combo (with drink) then it's $10.99. They also can make fresh rolls for $5.99. I only saw shrimp version for now, but I'm sure they can make others if you ask. The drinks start at $2.99 and up but if you get the combo sandwich/drink deal, it's $10.99 making it a great deal and for those of us that like to try different variations. EDIT: After I wrote about the only negative so far, (they only offer meat sandwiches and nothing for the vegetarians) I read that they now also offer tofu sandwiches. So yay, vegetarian can now have one sandwich. Maybe they will expand their offerings once they settle as they have only recently opened. Taste-wise, the sandwiches are crunchy, filled and tasty. I got a #1 combination sandwich combo on their opening day and it seemed very light filling, but I got the sandwich again today and they definitely improved with more filling, so I think they are working out any kinks and taking suggestions from the neighborhood patrons. The drinks are really good and the ladies that make them are so sweet and will adjust the drinks to your taste. Clean and friendly ambiance and service. Although this is more of a to-go/takeout place, they do have some bench seatings inside. They accept cash and credit cards.

The charbroiled beef had the smallest hint of sweetness for me. The noodles had a nice chew to them, and were dry but in the best way possible. A lot of garlic noodles tend to be too oily and leave an unpleasant lingering mouthfeel, but that wasn't the case here. The noodles could have used more garlic for my preference, but I think it was well balanced with the flavorful protein and fish sauce. The imperial rolls were okay and a nice crunchy side. I've given this place multiple chances over the years, but unfortunately each experience has been uncomfortable in one way or another. The first time was around 2022. My family and I arrived about 30 minutes before closing, and the owner told us he would still serve us. After seating us, though, he immediately pressured us to order quickly and told us we had to eat fast because they were closing. I was with my elderly relatives too so just turn us away? The interaction felt rude for no reason. Most recently, we came on Mother's Day. The dishwasher/staff member was also unfriendly. The bun cha was decent according to my mom, and my husband said the beef stew noodle dish was okay, but my pho lacked flavor entirely. I wasn't expecting it to compare to pho in Vietnam or even San Jose, but it tasted very bland so I didn't finish it. The service from the owner continues to be the biggest issue. When we paid, he stood over us while I counted cash, so I felt pressure to count fast and add tip quickly. He left then came back a few seconds later then quickly grabbed the money without even asking whether I needed change and disappeared faster than the wind. The whole interaction felt awkward and pushy. He has a very strange personality. He's honestly very sleazy and has bad energy After several experiences like this, we won't be returning.
